2018: On the Monday after Thanksgiving, General Motors workers in the U.S. and Canada learned of the company's announcement that it would be idling five plants and cutting around 14,000 jobs. In this urgent, multi-episode series, we will be talking to workers at plants in Ohio, Michigan, and Canada. In the fourth and final part of this series, we speak with activists, workers, scholars, and writers to get a range of perspectives on the GM layoffs, the plight of workers in the U.S. and beyond, and what we need to do--all of us--to collectively fight back against exploitation and to build a better world. Guests: Will Bunch, Sherry Linkon, Dnitra Landon, Abdul El-Sayed, Herman Rosenfeld, Cynthia Thornton We are sending a huge, heartfelt thanks to all the workers, organizers, and activists who helped us put this series together. Kyle Minton, past guest and possible owner of LTRFI, rejoins the podcast to talk about Casablanca. The cast hated making it and the studio expected little of it, yet the film is stands head and shoulders above even other classics, and out entertainment continues reference it. Dive into WWII intrigue, the business of Old Hollywood, and the dynamic pairing of Bogie and Bergman. Before we get to all that, we have to talk about Star Wars. It is our duty, our obligation, the cost of being a movie podcast. Kayla finally watched Mr. Robot, Tyler finally watched Rogue Nation, and Kyle continues to outhost the hosts. Contact us at ltrfipod@gmail.com 0:29 Intro 1:18 Recently watched: Kayla - Mr. Robot + playful hacking, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, The Untouchables + Kevin Costner in an Armani suit, and a half-hearted Chris Evans Corner; Kyle - Master of None + the big years for Netflix and Aziz Ansari, The STAR WARS SUPER-SEGMENT (15:04) including the silliness of the Mary Sue accusation; Tyler - Mission: The tremendous fun of Impossible - Rogue Nation, emotions about Inside Out's emotions 32:16 Casablance discussion: Trailer, ratings, box office, awards, initial impressions; Art unloved by the artists, the cultural permeation of classics; Eight-year-old Tyler's vision of Casablanca; The snappy pace and script, the treatment of Ilsa and Sam, Old Hollywood; Madonna's terrible, hilarious, ill-fated attempt at a remake; WWII and how Nazis will always and forever be the go-to villain 1:15:50 Recommendations, trivia, stat of the week, outro + bloopers
Our friend Kyle Minton (the Nothing Soundscast) joins us to talk Trainspotting and to crash a late edition of the Chris Evans corner. Also, Kyle hosts the podcast now. We had a good run. Our loose discussion encompasses comparisons to Requiem For a Dream, Fight Club, and the work of directors similar to Danny Boyle. We also touch on the broader work of Boyle and his upcoming Jobs. We're leery about it, but hopeful, and we can't wait for Fassbender in black turtlenecks. Also, the IMDB is NOT an American company. Our bad.
