Preparation and the Lure of the Third Voyage. Guest Author: Hampton Sides. In 1776, a retired Captain James Cookwas living a comfortable life at Greenwich Hospital after two legendary voyages. However, a dinner with Lord Sandwich and the prospect of finding the Northwest Passage—and its £20,000 reward—convinced him to return to sea. Sides describes Cook's rise from poverty in Yorkshire, apprenticing under Quakers on "Whitby Cats," which were sturdy coal ships. This background instilled in him a sense of frugality and steadiness. Cook was a self-taught genius of hydrography, creating maps so accurate they rival modern satellite imagery. Despite his desire for retirement, his restlessness and the Admiralty's need for his unique mapmaking and leadership skills drove him to accept this final mission. 11781 DEATH OF COOK

The FBI won't discuss exactly how Chinese spy Xu Yanjun came to the attention of special agents. Xu was handling a GE Aviation engineer in Ohio who specialized in composite fan-blade technology. That engineer, David Zheng, had been approached by an official from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, on LinkedIn with a request to give a presentation. So Zheng ended up traveling from his home in Ohio to China in the summer of 2017. Zheng delivered a talk on aviation technology and met officials from China's Ministry of State Security. That meeting included Xu, who paid Zheng's travel expenses and gave him a stipend. U.S. officials found Zheng carrying thousands in cash on his way back. Over the next year, Cincinnati-based FBI Special Agent Bradley Hull was part of a team that flipped Zheng to lure Xu out of China and, ultimately, into an American prison cell. Xu was the first Chinese spy to be extradited to the United States to stand trial. It's funny how fast time moves. Four years ago, almost to the day, I sat down to record the very first episode of Lure of the Lake. At the time, I didn't know if anyone would listen, whether I'd figure out what I was doing… or whether I was just a guy with a microphone and a high confidence level! Fittingly, my very first guest was Deano Cantrell from Freedom Boat Club of Lake Oconee. Well, four years later, both the podcast and Freedom Boat Club have grown significantly! Since that first episode, we've watched Lake Country continue to grow, boating explode in popularity, and Freedom Boat Club become a huge part of the lake lifestyle for so many people here at Oconee. And now, Deano is preparing for another big chapter — expanding operations into Lake Sinclair. So today's episode is part reunion, part celebration, and part look ahead at what's next. We'll talk about how boating has changed over the last few years, crazy things that happen around docks when you hand people the keys to a boat, why the boat club concept keeps growing, and what the boat club's expansion into Sinclair means for local boaters! And along the way, we may also reflect on how things have changed and evolved around here. One thing's for sure, Deano and I have become and remain close friends and we both look forward to the next 4 years! So whether you're a longtime listener, a boating enthusiast, or just someone who loves hearing how local businesses evolve and grow, this is going to be a fun one! These will be published with your show on Spotify, Apple, etc. exactly as written, please bear that in mind as you format them with emojis, bullets, etc. Today on Lure of the Lake, we're talking about one of those wonderful community traditions that proves some events are so much more than a date on the calendar. Every year, the Putnam County Dairy Festival brings people together in the heart of Eatonton for a day filled with family fun, local pride, food, vendors, entertainment, a parade, the Terrapin Trot, and plenty of reasons to remember why this community is so special. But the Dairy Festival is more than funnel cakes, festival shirts, and finding the best spot along the parade route, although, let's be honest, those are all noble pursuits. This festival is rooted in Putnam County's history and heritage. For generations, dairy farming helped shape this area, and the festival continues to celebrate that heritage while bringing families, businesses, volunteers, and visitors together for one of the most anticipated events of the year. And behind it all is the Pilot Club of Eatonton, a group of dedicated community servants who work year-round to help make this event happen. Festivals like this do not magically appear overnight. They are built by people who care, who serve, and who believe that traditions matter. Today, we'll talk with Glenda Ridley, the godmother of the Dairy Festival, about the history, what visitors can expect this year, what goes into planning an event of this size, and why this long-standing celebration continues to mean so much to the community and beyond. The All Local Afternoon Update for Friday, May 22nd, 2026
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Send us Fan MailDr. Allison Lure, neonatologist and clinical informatics fellow, presents findings from a large primary care network spanning over 80 practices in Massachusetts on how term and preterm infants grow longitudinally after discharge. She shares why the standard practice of correcting for gestational age until two years may be sufficient for moderate and late preterm infants but falls short for babies born below 32 weeks — who may need correction extended to three years or beyond to avoid being misclassified as failing to thrive. She also sheds light on the often-overlooked growth trajectories of moderate and late preterm babies, a population rarely captured in NICU follow-up clinics, and explains what her work in clinical informatics is teaching her about how to store, structure, and extract meaningful data from the electronic health record.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. On this action-packed episode of Fishing the DMV, we break down the 2026 NVKBA Trail Stop II – “Battle of Five Lakes I”, where anglers spread out across five of Northern Virginia's top fisheries: the Occoquan Reservoir, Lake Frederick, Sleeter Lake, Germantown Lake, and Burke Lake.Fishing conditions were a little slower than expected, but steady enough for anglers to grind it out and put together solid limits across all five lakes. When it was all said and done, it was Jonathon Mehus, the 2022 Angler of the Year, who separated himself from the field with an impressive 88.00 inches to take home the win.The key decision? Jonathon committed to the 2,100-acre Occoquan Reservoir, a highly technical fishery known for its standing timber, dock lines, creek channel swings, and bluff walls—and it paid off in a big way.In this episode, Jonathon gives a full, in-depth Occoquan Reservoir fishing report, breaking down:How he located and patterned bass in tough conditions Key areas that produced (including timber and bluff wall structure) Lure selection, adjustments, and decision-making throughout the day Why Occoquan stood out compared to the other four lakes in the tournament Tournament strategy tips that helped him close out the win If you're looking to unlock the secrets of one of Northern Virginia's most consistent bass fisheries, this is a must-listen breakdown packed with real tournament-winning insight.Whether you're a kayak angler, tournament fisherman, or just love learning new water, this episode delivers the exact strategy and mindset needed to compete at a high level. Please support Fishing the DMV on Patreon: https://patreon.com/FishingtheDMVPodcast If you are interested in being on the show or a sponsorship opportunity, please reach out to me at fishingtheDMV@gmail.comNVKBA on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nvkba Jake's bait & Tackle Website: http://www.jakesbaitandtackle.com/ Link to Tactical Fishing Company: https://tacticalfishingco.com/ Fishing Pro Tech: https://www.facebook.com/FishingProTech Phone Number: (757) 566-1278Email: lin@fishingprotech.usFishing Pro Tech Address: 7812-A Richmond Road, Toano, VA, United States, 23168 Click the link below to get free shipping off any Super Blue Stuff roll-ons when you use the code FISHING! In this episode, Jed welcomes back Australian author Geoffrey McSkimming, creator of the much‑loved Phyllis Wong and Cairo Jim series. Geoffrey joins from Sydney to celebrate Phyllis Wong and the Lure of the Lighthouse, the eighth book in the series, and talks about why Phyllis remains one of his favorite characters—resourceful, brilliant, magical, and deeply inspired by his wife, Sue-Anne Webster, a renowned stage magician. Geoffrey explains how magic and mystery writing overlap: both rely on misdirection, red herrings, and staying several steps ahead of the audience. He shares how he loves constructing mysteries that feel surprising but satisfying, so readers say, "That got me!" instead of feeling let down at the end. He also reveals he's working on a new collection of interrelated, humorous mystery short stories for young and young-at-heart readers. Language is at the heart of Geoffrey's writing. He talks about using rich but accessible vocabulary, giving kids context clues instead of talking down to them. He recalls how acting in Shakespeare plays immersed him in great language and how many of his early readers grew up to become professionals—some even crediting his books and their sophisticated language as an influence. Later in the episode, Jed chats briefly with Barbara Brown, an elementary music teacher and author of I Am Musical: Adventures with Waffles. Barbara shares how her picture book—starring her real-life dog Waffles—aims to remind kids that being musical isn't about perfection or virtuosity; it's about how music makes you feel, connect, and communicate.

How can Christian parents safeguard their children in a world where sexual exploitation is hidden in plain sight—even within their own homes? In this crucial episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World, Catherine welcomes Dr. Rondy Smith, founder and CEO of Rest Stop Ministries—the first long-term residential restoration program in Tennessee for female survivors of sex trafficking. Dr. Smith brings decades of frontline experience walking with women through profound trauma toward hope and restoration. The conversation delves into one of the most urgent questions facing parents today: “How can we protect our kids from being sexually exploited?” Drawing on powerful personal stories—including a heart-wrenching letter from a survivor whose abuse spanned eight years without her parents’ knowledge—Dr. Smith exposes the shocking reality: predators are often familiar faces, and exploitation is happening everywhere, not just distant or impoverished places. Key insights and takeaways: Myth-Busting: Over 60% of victims know their traffickers; they could be family friends, relatives, or acquaintances. Familiarity is not safety. Cybersex Trafficking: Dr. Smith recounts how online predators exploit children’s innocence and manipulate them through social media and gaming platforms, turning everyday devices into “porn boxes” with unfettered access to vulnerable youth. Warning Signs: Parents must trust their intuition and watch for behavioral changes such as panic over losing access to devices or withdrawal from routine activities. Open Communication: Survivors say they wish someone had intervened sooner—parents must foster safe spaces where children feel supported, not judged, regardless of what has happened. Hope and Restoration: No matter how deep the trauma, God is able to bring healing. Stories shared in the episode highlight recovery, reconciliation, and new beginnings for survivors and their families. Notable moments include Rondy's passionate call for parents to “think like a predator”—not out of fear, but out of wisdom and love for their children. The episode closes with a moving time of prayer and encouragement, affirming that Christian parents are called to be active peacemakers: to engage, educate, and advocate for their kids and their communities. Quote from the episode:"Wherever your kids are, the predators are there. We have to begin thinking like a predator and know that they’re out there." – Dr. Rondy Smith Anecdote:The episode features a survivor’s letter detailing eight years of secret exploitation, her eventual disclosure, and her journey to healing—a story that could “be happening in your home right now and you don’t know it,” as Catherine observes. Misha Glenny and guests discuss the countless venues across the Roman Empire which for over five hundred years drew the biggest crowds both in the Republic and under the Emperors. The shows there delighted the masses who knew, no matter how low their place in society, they were much better off than the gladiators about to fight or the beasts to be slaughtered. Some of the Roman elites were disgusted, seeing this popular entertainment as morally corrupting and un-Roman. Moral degradation was a less immediate concern though than the overspill of violence. There was a constant threat of gladiators being used as a private army and while those of the elite wealthy enough to stage the shows hoped to win great prestige, they risked disappointing a crowd which could quickly become a mob and turn on them. With Kathleen Coleman James Loeb Professor of the Classics at Harvard UniversityJohn Pearce Reader in Archaeology at King's College LondonAndMatthew Nicholls Fellow and Senior Tutor at St John's College, OxfordProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:C.
