This week the show opened with Tom quickly covering numerous news stories, including the likely demise of Cadillac's last sedans, General Motors buying electric vans from Hyundai, and Cummins building a high-torque gasoline alternative to its medium-duty B6.7 diesel engines. Jill and Tom also briefly discussed the rumored production by Foxconn of electric vehicles in the U.S., most likely for Mitsubishi and Nissan. Still in the first segment, Jill reviewed the 2025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. Listen in to get Jill's take on the popular compact crossover. In the second segment, Jill and Tom are Joined by Alex Kwanten of U.S. News and World Report. Alex walked the hosts through the outlet's 2025 Best Cars for Families list. The list includes sedans, crossovers, and electric vehicles. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Where is it Built: Special Tariff Edition” quiz.
Electric vehicle sales in the U.S. have slowed down. In August, J.D. Power said EVs would account for 9% of U.S. automotive sales this year, a fairly major adjustment to its previous forecast of 12%.It's a market reality that's forcing large automakers like Ford and Toyota to adjust their plans. It's also forcing smaller EV makers like Lordstown and Fisker to throw in the towel all together. And in Fisker's case, it looks like it got out as fast as it could. In June, Fisker filed for bankruptcy protection and shortly after filed a legal motion to get out of the lease at its former headquarters in California. That potential arrangement could be in jeopardy now based on a new filing spotted by TechCrunch in which Fisker's landlord, Shamrock, describes the state of the company's abandoned headquarters as “complete disarray.”Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.
Front Porch Politics and Tying It Together podcast host Tim Boyum is on the road, talking with everyday Americans and local leaders about the issues that matter to them this election season. He is cranking out bite-sized podcasts along the way, and in his first edition, he is making his way up the Pennsylvania turnpike with photojournalist John Stampf in a rented Tesla. Host Tim Boyum continues his treck across America with recent stops in Pittsburgh, Buttler, Pennsylvania and then to Lordstown, Ohio before landing in Lansing, Michigan for the vice presidential debate. He said they put on about 410 miles across three states. They've opted to choose the strategy of topping off rather than waiting to get to a 10% charge. The two topped off before leaving, taking about 28 minutes and costing them $7 dollars. They also stopped in Gerrard, Ohio for another charge, taking 37 minutes for $14 dollars, as well in Toledo for a 44 minute recharge at about $18 dollars. Their final charge was in Lancing, Michigan for a 35 minute charge at about $16 dollars. While in Butler, PA, Tim met with artist Bill Secunda who made what he estimates to be a 20-foot-tall, 200 lb statue of Donald Trump out of nails. Once arriving in Lordstown, Tim spoke to residents about what they need to hear from politicians after a GM plant shut down in 2019. The mayor asked for a pledge of support and for candidates to pull through on those promises. Tim and John head to Wisconsin for their next leg of the trip.
Front Porch Politics and Tying It Together podcast host, Tim Boyum, is on the road, talking with everyday Americans and local leaders about the issues that matter to them this election season. He is cranking out bit-sized podcasts along the way, and in his first edition, he is making his way up the Pennsylvania turnpike with Photojournalist John Stampf in a rented Tesla. After leaving the Philadelphia area, they stopped in Morgantown, PA to charge up the vehicle. Tim did note, "range anxiety" is real when you're not used to driving an EV. He found himself constantly worried about what percentage he saw on the screen. They found a supercharger at a gas station when the car was down to 34%, travelling 156 miles. It took 42 minutes and $16.13 to charge it back up to 100%. While waiting, one other car came and charged their vehicle, otherwise it was largely gas-powered vehicles. Later it's Pittsburgh, then Lordstown, Ohio.

In this episode, I am joined by someone who I greatly admire. He's not the flashiest leader. He doesn't make headlines every day, but in my opinion, he is a modern-day hero, and one of the brightest leaders in the labor movement. His name is Shawn Fain and he is the President of the United Auto Workers. The UAW, under Shawn's leadership, recently secured a historic contract with huge pay and benefit increases for workers at the Big Three automakers–GM, Ford and Stellantis. But the UAW did not stop there. Under Shawn's leadership, they have launched a massive new initiative to organize non-union auto plants in the South. And they have notched several more historic victories in recent months. In April, workers at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee voted to join the union, becoming the first large nonunion auto plant in the South to do so. Weeks later, the union negotiated a new contract bringing significant pay and benefit improvements for its members at several North Carolina factories owned by Daimler Truck. The campaign hasn't been without its setbacks. Last month the UAW narrowly lost a unionization vote at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama following a concerted anti-union effort from corporate interests and the state's governor. Both the US and German governments are currently investigating Mercedes for the intimidation and harassment they inflicted on their own workers during the campaign. But just this week, UAW electric vehicle workers in Lordstown, Ohio reached a tentative agreement that will more than double their wages by the end of the contract. So I am very excited to talk about the success of the UAW and the resurgent labor movement with my guest, UAW President Shawn Fain.

Lordstown Motors is back in the headlines as some familiar faces have reentered the picture three months after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.According to an SEC filing, when Lordstown began voluntary proceedings under Chapter 11 in June, the company's “selling entities” approved an auction to sell the company's assets. The bankruptcy court approved the bidding procedures, and the selling entities received a qualifying bid from a limited liability company called LAS Capital. LAS Capital has no affiliation with Lordstown Motors. It was, however, founded by Lordstown's founder and former CEO Steve Burns. Former Lordstown CFO Julio Rodriguez is also reportedly involved as the sellers are also considering him an indirect manager of LAS Capital.

Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell has made it clear that he’s laser-focused on bringing inflation back down to the central bank’s target rate of 2% annually. But why is reaching that specific number such a big deal? And where did the 2% target come from? On the show today, David Wilcox, economist at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and director of U.S. economic research at Bloomberg Economics, explains why it's important for central banks to have a target inflation rate in the first place, how the Fed landed on 2% in particular and whether that target rate should be lifted in today's economy. Plus, some monetary policy pro tips. In the news, the Supreme Court considered a legal theory that had gained traction with Republicans and kicked it to the curb. We’ll get into what that might mean for future elections. And, an EV company went the SPAC route, and it didn’t turn out well. Later, listeners sound off on “Star Wars” and a Rubik’s Cube TV series. The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
It's Tuesday and we're fired up for another day in Retail Auto as we talk about the unfolding action in EV manufacturing. We discuss Lordstown Motors bankruptcy, the launch of the Silverado EV, as well as the moves Ford is making with its engineers. Show Notes with links:Ohio based Electric truck manufacturer Lordstown Motors has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is now taking legal action against Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, accusing them of fraudulent conduct and a series of broken promises, including not abiding by an agreement to invest up to $170 million.Foxconn, best known for assembling Apple's iPhones, had previously invested about $52.7 million in Lordstown and holds nearly 8.4% stake. They stated that Lordstown breached the investment agreement when the automaker's stock fell below $1 per share. The company's flagship product, a pickup called the “Endurance” was plagued with fires during testing and CEO Stephen Burns resigned in 2021 after acknowledging overstatements of pre-orders for its electric trucks. The dispute could bring more scrutiny to Foxconn's electric vehicle ambitions and partnerships. Should Lordstown fail to find a rescuer, the once celebrated, Lordstown, Ohio factory now owned by Foxconn could attract overseas automakers wanting to build vehicles in the U.S.The Chevy Silverado EV is about to begin commercial production, promising a 450-mile range backed by a whopping 200+kWh battery. However, due to recent supply chain and economic pressures, Chevy is set to increase the initial $39,900 price point of the base model upon its 2024 launch.GM has closed orders for the truck as it begins to fulfill some of the 185k existing commercial orders. Production has started at GM's Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit, with customer deliveries expected to begin soon. The vehicle weighs 8500 lbs and requires 61 PSI in its tires. Its 200kw battery is 50% larger than the F150 Lightning long range battery and twice as large as the standard range. A Chevy Bolt has a 65kw battery. Carplay still works with a popup warning that it will be discontinued with future updatesIn the ongoing positioning of EV manufacturing, Ford Motor Co. is preparing to lay off hundreds of salaried engineers across all three of its divisions; EVs, ICE, and commercial vehicles to boost profitability and cut costs amid its $50 billion transition to electric vehicles. Earlier this year, CEO Jim Farley said the company needed as many as 25% more engineersT.R. Reid, a spokesperson for Ford, stated, “We're not cost competitive. We have specific priorities and ambitions that have implications for skills, assignments and staffing needs. These changes are consistent with that. They'll make us cost effective.”Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

The guys agree with an internet wag who described the Ford Bronco as an Escape with an Otter Box on it. He's right. They then hone in on the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd's classic album, ‘Dark Side of the Moon'. Meaningful then, meaningful now, and we all wish we were Nick Mason. Car Spotting: Adams spots a Honda S2000. In his own garage (he just bought one). Lazy? Yes, but it's also an enthusiast's car with an up-and-coming collectible side. His cohorts deem the attraction short-lived. What is up at Nissan? Junk credit, yawner product line, and innovation only a yo-yo could admire. The brand has fallen mightily in its desirability quotient. Is it fading toward irrelevance? Next, is the BEV honeymoon over before the marriage was consummated? Though we feign seriousness, Stephan sparks multi-faceted comments about post-coital afterglow. Or glare. It doesn't matter. Yet Rivian, Lordstown, Lucid, are on the ropes while the country is just plainly not ready for mainstream BEV adoption. Amazon (AMZN) to lay off over 18k employees. Salesforce (CRM) shares climb as CEO says company 'hired too many people'. 2022 marks worst showing for U.S. car sales in over a decade. Lordstown (RIDE) expects ‘slow rate of production' through Q1.
In November, 2022 Lordstown Motors began delivering Endurance full-size electric trucks to fleet customers in America. Lordstown, named after the city in northeast, Ohio, represents an important new chapter in America's automotive manufacturing history. Lordstown is the designer and engineer of the electric vehicle. Samsung supplies the battery. And Foxconn, the powerhouse Taiwanese maker of our iPhones and iPads, is the manufacturer of the final product. This marks an important step in Foxconn's ambitions to weave itself into the fabric of American industry. The relationship also allows Lordstown to work with Foxconn MIH to develop other future vehicles from a single platform. What this means for Joe or Jane pickup truck customer: Potentially many more affordable choices for American consumers beyond the offerings from legacy players in Detroit, Wolfsburg, Seoul and Tokyo. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGohttps://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=enhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/
