The Bogie and Bacall of Beltway journalistic power couples — Peter Baker of the New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker — return to the show to discuss the fallout from the first true crisis of Donald Trump's second term and an array of ongoing controversies embroiling the new administration. Peter and Susan explain why, despite the serious national security implications of Signalgate and the long knives being out for both Pete Hegseth and Michael Waltz, there's a decent chance that both will keep their jobs; Steve Witkoff is entirely out of his depth serving as Trump's envoy to Russia in the effort to end the war in Ukraine; and the decision to nix Elise Stefanik's bid to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nation is a clear sign that the GOP's political standing is increasingly imperiled. Peter and Susan also reflect on the myriad unnerving ways in which Trump's Washington reminds them of Moscow 25 years ago, when both were based there covering the dawn of the Putin era. AP Mike from THE BEST SHOW joins us once again for our #Noirvember episode and he's bringing Humphrey Bogart with him. Mike has chosen two wildly different takes on the Bogart persona from two of Hollywood greatest directors. First, it's the classic mystery that made Bogie a star with THE MALTESE FALCON from first-time director John Huston in 1941. Bogart is San Francisco private dick Sam Spade in this veritable blueprint for all the detective noir that followed it. Bogie is backed by an amazing cast with Mary Astor as femme fatale Brigid O'Shaughnessy; Petter Lorre as Joel Cairo; Sydney Greenstreet making his film debut at 62 years old as Kaspar Guttman; and Elisha Cook, Jr. playing shifty thug Wilmer Cook. All of these characters are on an existential quest the big, black bird--the stuff that dreams are made of--and several of them will do anything to get it. Then, Bogart goes grim dark in Nicholas Ray's IN A LONELY PLACE (1950). Bogie plays Dixon "Dix" Steele, a hasbeen Hollywood script writer with severe anger management issues. Dix is dragged in for questioning after Mildred, the hat-check girl he took back to his apartment, turns up murdered, and Bogie's wise-cracking ways take on an air of extreme menace as he jokes his way through the police interrogation. His neighbor, Laurel Gray played by Noir princess Gloria Grahame, falls for him despite the allegations because she saw that he didn't leave with the victim. But as Dix grows more violent and domineering, she, and the audience, start to question all that we've seen. Mike details the differences between the movie and the novel that it's based on. Eddie Muller's favorite film of all time. In our opening segment, we attempt to sort out the wreckage of our society, and our world, post-election before the conversation devolves into more recent movie recommendations. Cory really wants everyone to see CONCLAVE, while Bob says to get really high and watch HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS on Fandor or tubi. Meanwhile, Philena is plotting her escape to Ireland. With Robert Eggers' remake of NOSFERATU hitting theaters next month,OMFYS will be back next month for NOSFERATU CHRISTMAS. Send us a textFor this week's episode, the DetBlock Crew bounce around a little bit with their topics.  To start out, they discuss some news revolving around a particular character from a Star Wars movie you may or may not be familiar with that will be returning in the upcoming Star Wars show, Skeleton Crew.  If you've seen our title thumbnail, you know who we are talking about.  Yes, we're talking about Teek from Ewok Adventures: The Battle for Endor.  Crazy enough, Mike and his wife actually ran into the actress who portrayed Teek [Niki Botelho] and they didn't even realize it at the time.  Funny story, AMAZING person!Bogie and Mike then delve into the concept that Star Wars projects need to be written and created by people or teams that are fans of the franchise.  Enough of the bringing in new people who have minimal to no knowledge of the Star Wars franchise, as Disney has specifically done with some of their projects.  Instead, let's utilize people like Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, and hey... maybe some fan film creators!  Kidding... kind of...From there, the two guys start talking a little bit about the sequel trilogy and how jumping directors pretty much set that trilogy up for failure.  What started with potential, ended with a project trying to quickly patch up the holes.  Following that, they make a little comparison to what is going on with the Marvel universe and how confidence in that universe is waning as well and some of the reasons behind that. After talking a little bit about the Ahsoka show, a new book being released centering around certain Acolyte characters, and some fan film productions, they then finish up their talk with more of Bogie's Clone Wars season one experience.  As he pushes through more episodes of the show, he brings his insights and opinions on the episodes he's watched.Social Media Handles:Twitter: @DetBlockAA23PodTikTok: @detblockaa23Instagram: detention_block_aa_23FB Group: Detention Block AA-23: A Star Wars PodcastYouTube: Detention Block AA-23: A Star Wars PodcastSponsors:Under Pressure BrewingMirror Twin BrewingGolden Valley, MNSource: Comics & GamesRoseville, MNStar Wars ComicsStar Wars Games: X-Wing & Armada strategy games; Star Wars: Legion strategy gameTwin Cities Geek - Magazine & Online CommunityMy Star Wars Life - FB Group (Join Now!)

Send us a textFor this week's episode, the DetBlock Crew bounce around a few topics.  To start out, they discuss some updates and news that revolves around Comicon, whether it be current or upcoming ones.  On that topic, they then go into some releases as it relates to 2025 Star Wars Celebration in Japan.Next, the Crew decide to be a little festive to get into the Halloween spirit.  As they have been watching some scary movies or Halloween classics, they discuss if the aspect of horror could be brought into Star Wars.  Could the franchise we all know and love dip into that type of genre and release a Star Wars Halloween movie or series [outside of the LEGO version one]?  What possible themes or aspects could be tapped in here? Finally, Bogie catches us up with where he is at in his first time watching Star Wars Clone Wars.  He's gone back to watch the Clone Wars movie and he is now up to episode 10 of season 1 of the show.  He shares his thoughts and notes from his watching as Mike lives vicariously through him, wanting to go back and re-live his own first time watching the show.Social Media Handles:Twitter: @DetBlockAA23PodTikTok: @detblockaa23Instagram: detention_block_aa_23FB Group: Detention Block AA-23: A Star Wars PodcastYouTube: Detention Block AA-23: A Star Wars PodcastSponsors:Under Pressure BrewingMirror Twin BrewingGolden Valley, MNSource: Comics & GamesRoseville, MNStar Wars ComicsStar Wars Games: X-Wing & Armada strategy games; Star Wars: Legion strategy gameTwin Cities Geek - Magazine & Online CommunityMy Star Wars Life - FB Group (Join Now!)

Send us a textThe DetBlock crew might have started off talking a little bit about sports [hey, we love our sports!], but then they first dive in to talking a bit about Star Wars video games.  News came out that Outlaws is underperforming, but there's still plenty of time for that to turn around.  However, this could also just be a continuation of the times for the franchise and the, what some say, misses Disney and Lucasfilm have made recently.  Either way, there are still plenty of fun Star Wars video games out there, and Bogie and Mike talk through a few of those. They then go into an interview that was recently aired where Star Wars Theory sits down with Stuart Beattie and they talk about Stuart's plan and story line for the original content that was going to be released about Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Originally, instead of a show, Kenobi was going to be brought to the big screen with his own trilogy and Mr. Beattie wrote the script for all 3 movies.  With everything going on in the early 2020's, this ended up getting scrubbed, changed up quite a bit, and turned into a show.  If you haven't already, go listen to this interview.  The original plan for Beattie's trilogy is absolutely AMAZING and it's a shame we never got it; only elements of it in the #Kenobi show. They then go into discussing some defining actors that just perfectly fit their character, inside and outside of Star Wars.  From Heath Ledger as the Joker, William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Hayden Christianson as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader, or Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, some actors just perfectly hit their mark.  Unfortunately, for some of them, we lose them as soon as they bring those characters to life. Finally, the Crew close with talking about Bogie's initial dive into the animated show #CloneWars.  We are super excited to follow along with him as he lives through this for the first time.  He's going to LOVE it!Social Media Handles:Twitter: @DetBlockAA23PodTikTok: @detblockaa23Instagram: detention_block_aa_23FB Group: Detention Block AA-23: A Star Wars PodcastYouTube: Detention Block AA-23: A Star Wars PodcastSponsors:Under Pressure #BrewingMirror Twin BrewingGolden Valley, MNSource: Comics & GamesRoseville, MNStar Wars ComicsStar Wars Games: X-Wing & Armada strategy games; Star Wars: Legion strategy gameTwin Cities Geek - Magazine & Online CommunityMy Star Wars Life - FB Group (Join Now!)

Howard Hawks's To Have and Have Not (1944) is more Hollywood than Hemingway–something for which we should all be grateful. The film is a wonderful example–perhaps the best–of onscreen chemistry and remains wildly entertaining even aside from the onscreen courtship of Bogart and Bacall. Join us as we talk about banter as a tool of seduction, the ways in which films let us “borrow the nature” of their actors, how To Have and Have Not feels like Casablanca II, and if Howard Hawks has an odd obsession with Hoagy Carmichael. Rerun: Howard Hawks' film noir ‘The Big Sleep' finally hit cinemas on 23rd August, 1946, after extra crowd-pleasing repartee had been inserted, featuring real life couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. But more flirtation meant less exposition - making the plot of the detective story notoriously difficult to follow, even to the extent that the filmmakers had to call author Raymond Chandler to ask him who had killed one of the characters.  In this episode, Rebecca, Arion and Olly explain why the Hays censorship code compounded an already confusing script; reveal William Faulkner's left-field approach to WFH; and consider why - on the silver screen, anyway - women appeared to fall at Bogart's feet… Further Reading: • ‘The Big Sleep: Proof That Plot Doesn't Matter' (Den of Geek, 2019): https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/the-big-sleep-proof-that-plot-doesn-t-matter/ • ‘Homosexuality and the Production Code –The Big Sleep' (Sophie Hagberg, 2014): https://sophiehagbergscrn131.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/homosexuality-and-the-production-code-the-big-sleep-1946/ • ‘They're Together Again!' Bogie and Bacall's first movie together was directed by Howard Hawks and was based on a book by Ernest Hemingway, so that's some serious cache. Of course, Hawks barely used anything from his friend's To Have And Have Not novel other than the title, even though the screenplay is filled with snappy lines. This is "Casablanca In The Caribbean" and it's set during the early days of World War II, but all of that is a backdrop for Bacall's star-making performance...which was also her debut. She and Bogart were married for real not too long after filming was finished, building on the sexual and romantic chemistry they have in the film. While To Have And Have Not is far from perfect, it has more than just "Steve" and "Slim", even though it doesn't need much more than them. 1984 - October: Steve Perry “Street Talk”

What the Riff?!?

It will come as no surprise to regular listeners of this podcast that we are all big fans of Steve Perry, the chief vocalist of Journey.  So it should also not come as a surprise that we would want to feature his debut solo studio album called Street Talk.  Perry embarked on this solo project shortly after the release of Journey's "Frontiers" album, at a time when the group was packing arenas around the world.  The name of the album comes from his pre-Journey days when he was leading a band called Alien Project - but he had at one time considered naming it, "Street Talk."  Perry also used Craig Krampf as drummer, who was also a previous member of Alien Project. The album obviously has similarities to Journey due to Perry's vocals, but it is significantly softer than the more pop rock/hard rock approach typical of Journey.  The songs are written or co-written by Perry, and showcase Perry's voice in a more ballad-heavy manner.  The lead single, “Oh Sherrie,” was written about his relationship with Perry's then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, and hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  We covered “Oh Sherrie” on episode #148, but there are three other singles that broke into the top 40, powering the album to number 12 on the Billboard 200 album charts and to 2x Platinum in sales.Perry had worked outside of Journey during his tenure with the band, including vocal work with both Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins.  Other members of the band were also working on side projects, so it was expected that all would return to the group after their separate projects.  Perry followed suit, this, but troubles began to surface with personnel changes and  Perry's mother's failing health causing the "Raised on Radio" Journey album to be delayed.Street Talk gives us a good look at Steve Perry outside of the rest of the Journey band members, during a time when Perry was at the top of his vocal game.Rob brings us this excellent album for today's podcast. She's MineThe track that starts side two is a slow rocker that demonstrates Perry's versatility in musical styles.  The lyrics describe a struggle between a guy and his rival over a girl.  It made it to number 21 on the US charts - and you can't go wrong with a sax. Captured By the MomentThis song is deeper lyrically, with Perry looking at significant times in history and music as snapshots in a frame.  He pays tribute to some key figures from the 60s and 70s including Martin Luther King Jr, Jackie Kennedy, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and others.  It has a distinctive 80's keyboard sound.   Foolish HeartA subdued piece, this track is the second-biggest hit from the album after "Oh, Sherrie."  The lyrics depict a guy longing for love, but who does not trust his heart to make good choices.  It was co-written with Randy Goodrum, who wrote "You Needed Me" for Anne Murray.  It was the last single released from the album.  Strung OutThis faster paced track closes out the album, and discusses love from the perspective of a guy longing for a woman in a relationship with another.  "I feel like Bogart in a crazy movie.  Bogie and me, we never beg - but this time maybe I've got voices in my head."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Who's the Boss?”Tony Danza plays a former baseball athlete trying to raise his daughter while working as a live-in housekeeper for a single advertising executive.  Alyssa Milano played Danza's daughter. STAFF PICKS:I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister Wayne kicks off the staff picks with glam rock sensation Twisted Sister in their follow-up to "We're Not Gonna Take It."  Many listeners may be more familiar with a cover of this song performed by SpongeBob SquarePants in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" entitled "Goofy Goober Rock."For Whom the Bell Tolls by MetallicaLynch brings us a signature song from Metallica's 1984 album, "Ride the Lightning."  The heavy riffs typical of Metallica are accented by the toll of chimes, and the lyrics are inspired by Ernest Hemmingway's novel of the same name dealing with war, death, and fate set in the Spanish Civil War.Hard Habit to Break by Chicago Bruce takes the tempo way down with a hit off Chicago 17.  Vocal duties are carried by Bill Champlin and Peter Cetera, and the song is arranged by David Foster.  The lyrics depict a man struggling to get over a long lost love whom he took for granted.  Chicago 17 is Chicago's best selling album, and their last with Peter Cetera in the group. No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney Rob closes out the staff picks with a single from the soundtrack to McCartney's film, "Give My Regards to Broad Street."  McCartney brings in Pink Floyd alumnus David Gilmour for guitar work on this song.  Gilmour requested that his session fee be donated to a charity of Paul's choice.  It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Zoolookologie by Jean Michel JarreWe close out on a jazz fusion number from the time which uses samples of voice and spoken words to form an art rock sonic landscape. It's just another Marlowe Monday. I'm glad it's not a Sunday. Because my fun day is Marlow Monday. For our noir theme that we're calling THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR we talking about an adapted film featuring our iconic private dick created somewhere between blackouts by Raymond Chandler. Our third Marlowe Monday feature's Philip comes off a little more dapper than Humphrey Bogart and Dick Powell. George Montgomery might swag a little more than Powell but still less than Bogie. Montgomery don't swag like either but his portrayal of Philip Marlowe in John Brahm's 1947 adaptation of Chandler's “The High Window” still scratches that hard boiled itch. We're talking about “THE BRASHER DOUBLOON” and it's easy to find online. Like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNJSGYeUivU . You gotta admire the camera technology Marlowe shows off in this one. Unlike the mid-40s film that first brought us Bogie and Bacall, The Breaking Point is a relatively faithful adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s story, To Have and Have Not. This one stars John Garfield (in one of his final films) and Patricia Neal. Michael Curtiz directs, but if that suggests a routine Warner Bothers potboiler (I love those) it is not. Garfield is a boat captain talked into doing some smuggling. There’s a love triangle and an ending that’ll just wrench you. Shelly Brisbin with Randy Dotinga and Nathan Alderman.

On today's episode, Bogie Foden joins Joanna on the show. Bogie grew up in a town where there were 160 people in his graduating class.  In his community, it was expected that after graduation everyone would go to a 4 year college and get a good degree. After touring the campus at the University of Colorado in Boulder, he decided that this was where he wanted to be. During freshman year he ended up getting suspended and ended up attending a community college where he learned much about life. He shares that his classmates were adults and parents of all ages that were working full time and some multiple jobs while attending college to get their degrees. This was definitely an eye opening experience for him that helped shape him into the person he is today as well as his career path in clinical social work, residential treatment and wilderness therapy.Connect with Bogie Foden Bogie Foden on FacebookSpruce Mountain InnConnect with Joanna Lilley  Therapeutic Consulting AssociationLilley Consulting WebsiteLilley Consulting on Facebook Email: joanna@lilleyconsulting.com#therapeuticconsulting #lilleyconsulting #collegementalhealth #communitycollege #socialworker #wildernesstherapy #residentialtreatment #collegesuccess  #colorado #psychology #podcast #podcastcommunity #youarenotalone #findingmyway

The Top 100 Project

It's President's Day in America, it's Family Day here in Ontario and it's also Black History Month, but it's also "Love In A Word" Month on Have You Ever Seen...and we continue to talk about romantic movies with one-word titles. Sabrina has a tremendous pedigree. Billy Wilder directing Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden must have been an easy sell to the moneymen 70 years ago. Their romcom is pretty good and it is indeed funny & romantic (at times), but we had trouble buying the love story. Holden is not at his best, while Bogie seems miscast...and also somewhat disinterested. Audrey is about as charming and likable as she always was though, plus Wilder certainly knew what he was doing while making a comedy. Ups, downs. So put on a fancy dress and try to close that big deal to rake in mucho bucks as you hear us gab about Sabrina in our 570th episode. Sparkplug Coffee offers excellent beans to Canadians & Americans.
