With Joe Duran – Managing Partner, Rise Growth Partners Overview What does it take to build something enduring—more than once? In this special replay, Joe Duran reflects on the mindset behind reinvention, the lessons from selling United Capital to Goldman, and why the most successful leaders never stop questioning their assumptions. Neither Diamond Consultants nor the guests on this podcast are compensated in any way for their participation. About this episode… Joe Duran's career has always been about reaching new heights—and then helping others climb on their own. A proverbial mountain climber himself, Joe built and sold two of the most successful firms in the RIA space: Centurion Capital and United Capital. Today, Joe sees himself as a sherpa—guiding the next generation of entrepreneurs through his latest venture, Rise Growth Partners. His story is one of constant reinvention, relentless curiosity, and the humility to keep asking one simple question: “What if I'm wrong?” Joe first joined us on the show back in 2020, shortly after the sale of United Capital to Goldman Sachs. Now, with the benefit of both hindsight and foresight, Joe revisits that experience and explores the mindset behind building truly world-class firms, including: The Goldman experience—and what he learned from the sale of United Capital. The development of Rise—and how he sees it helping to shift the narrative in the industry. Learning from your clients instead of your competitors—and why that's the real key to building a world-class firm. Finding an investor that can “really help you—and why you need to look beyond “financiers.” Adding services without adding staff—and when you shouldn't look in-house for solutions. Challenging your assumptions—and how to stay relevant in an industry that never stops changing. And why being great doesn't necessarily mean being the biggest. Joe also reflects on how the industry can avoid the risk of mega-RIAs repeating the mistakes of the wirehouses. It's a candid and thought-provoking conversation about reinvention, leadership, value creation, and what it means to evolve from mountain climber to sherpa from one of the industry's trailblazers. Many women hit midlife and feel something they cannot name. They are still doing the right things, eating well, exercising consistently, showing up for everyone, yet life suddenly feels harder and less familiar. Age Like a Girl gives language to this experience and explains why it is not a failure, but a shift happening beneath the surface. This is not a motivation problem. This is not a discipline issue. And it is not “all in your head."In this hol+ conversation, Dr. Taz sits down with New York Times bestselling author and leading voice in women's health Dr. Mindy Pelz, host of the hit podcast The Resetter Podcast, to explore the core message behind Age Like a Girl: menopause is not a decline, it is a biologically wired reinvention.Instead of treating perimenopause and menopause as a crisis to manage, Dr. Mindy reframes the transition as a neurochemical and cognitive remodel designed to make women more focused, emotionally resilient, and aligned with who they truly are. She breaks down why modern life often clashes with this primal design, and why brain fog, mood shifts, and emotional intensity are not random symptoms, but signals that the brain is asking for a new way of living. This episode explores why women can feel anxious, disconnected, or unlike themselves even when they are “doing everything right,” and how metabolism, stress chemistry, and neurotransmitters shape mood, clarity, and identity. Dr. Taz and Dr. Mindy discuss why many women initiate big life and relationship changes after 40, why community and connection become essential, and why reinvention is not a midlife crisis, but biology. From perimenopause into postmenopause, this conversation reframes aging as an awakening. Not the end of youth, but the return of clarity, boundaries, and self-trust. If you have ever felt dismissed, confused, or afraid that something is wrong with you, this episode offers a validating and hopeful roadmap forward.Dr. Taz and Dr. Mindy Pelz discuss: • The core message of Age Like a Girl and why it reframes menopause • Why the female brain is biologically wired for reinvention after 40 • Brain fog and mood shifts as signals of a cognitive remodel • How modern life clashes with primal biology • Why women often make major life decisions in midlife • The role of neurotransmitters in clarity, calm, and confidence • Why community and deep connection matter more than ever • How to reclaim vitality without another exhausting checklistAbout Dr. Mindy PelzDr. Mindy Pelz is a New York Times bestselling author, visionary educator, and trailblazer in the field of women's health and hormone science. With over two decades of experience, she's built a global movement to help women understand the power of their bodies at every stage of life. Her bestselling books, including Fast Like a Girl, The Menopause Reset, and Eat Like a Girl, have helped millions of women use fasting, nutrition, and lifestyle shifts to balance hormones, boost energy, and take back control of their health. Her newest release book, Age Like a Girl, redefines what it means to grow older as a woman.Rooted in the latest science and rich in personal story, the book challenges outdated narratives about menopause and aging offering instead a roadmap for awakening. Reinvention isn't about becoming someone new — it's about releasing the version of you that no longer fits. This episode explores the tools that actually support reinvention; not resolutions or goal lists, but the subtle, everyday shifts that change how you think, act, and show up in your life. We're talking about identity, habits, environment, and style — and how these elements quietly shape your confidence, energy, and direction. We explore the invisible choices that quietly shape your confidence, your energy, and your results; from what you tolerate, to how you dress, to whether your daily habits support the life you say you want. Inside the episode, we unpack: The mindset shift that changes your results faster than goal-setting ever will A simple way to tell if your daily actions actually match the future you want How your clothing influences confidence, focus, and personal power (often without you realizing it) Why consistency — not intensity — is what creates lasting transformation The role your environment plays in either reinforcing your old identity or supporting your next one Why growth always feels uncomfortable, awkward, or "cringe" before it feels aligned How learning, curiosity, and expansion are essential to feeling alive again If you've been craving a fresh chapter — not a dramatic overhaul, but a deeper alignment with who you're becoming — this episode will help you rethink reinvention and begin from a more powerful place. What if slowing down after 50 is a choice, not a rule set by Father Time? Many men over 50 feel capable but stalled. Energy dips, goals shrink, and fitness becomes optional instead of essential. Dan and Ellen talk with Mike Beaudet and Lisa Thalhamer. Mike is a colleague at Northeastern, where he is a journalism professor. He is also an investigative reporter at WCVB-TV, Boston's ABC affiliate. He's worked in local television news for more than 30 years. Before joining WCVB-TV he was an investigative reporter and anchor at WFXT-TV in Boston. Beaudet's research at Northeastern focuses on the future of local television news and finding new ways to grow the audience and engage younger viewers where they're consuming content. Lisa is a journalist and researcher. She's currently editor-in-chief of The Scope, a hyper-local publication in Boston, as well as an adjunct professor at Northeastern University. Her research focuses on improving the mental well-being of journalists, particularly those in local TV news, where she worked for more than 15 years as a producer. While earning her master's degree at Northeastern, Thalhamer was Reinvent's Video Innovation Scholar, helping newsrooms evolve their video storytelling skills to fit the world of social media. In keeping with the all-Northeastern theme of this podcast, Dan and Ellen are also joined by Greg Maynard, a student of Dan's who has done a compelling story about what cord-cutting means for local cable access outlets. Ellen has a Quick Take on the end of an era in Minneapolis. In December, the daily newspaper, the Minnesota Star Tribune, stopped printing copies at their giant brick plant in downtown Minneapolis. The Strib is printing at a Gannett plant in Des Moines, Iowa. That means earlier deadlines, and 125 jobs lost. Dan has a wild story for his Quick Take. Last summer there was some sad news coming out of Claremont, New Hampshire: the Eagle Times, a star-crossed paper that had had its ups and downs going back to the 1940s, was closing its doors after its wealthy owner, Jay Lucas, failed to meet payroll. At the time, New Hampshire Public Radio ran a story on the shutdown that was harsher than you would have expected. But there was a reason.

Goodman also gives his thoughts on why Louisville could be a Final Four team with Mikel Brown Jr. or a first-weekend exit without him.
Just when you though you understood what a zone hold was … Hasn’t the comp climbing format already been “solved?” Some think there is room for improvement, including Charlie Boscoe, an alpinist turned World Cup commentator. He is the co-founder of the Professional Climbing League, a new comp series launching in London on February 28. But first, Chris sings praise of a crag where people know how to operate, and the wheat is separated from the chaff. Unfortunately, it turns out the chaff is Andrew. What if I told you the government owes you money – possibly tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars – and all you have to do is ask for it back?I know - sounds like complete BS.That's exactly what I thought when my buddy Justin Maxwell told me about the R&D Tax Credit while I was speaking at an event. But he made me an offer I couldn't refuse: "Let me do all the work, show you exactly what you'll get back, and you don't pay me a dime unless you keep the money."Within a couple weeks, I had a fat check deposited directly into my bank account. Then more checks after that. Then we went backwards three years and got even more money back. And here's the kicker – this isn't some sketchy loophole. It's a legitimate government incentive designed specifically for business owners like you who are innovating, creating, building, and testing new things in your business. In this episode, Justin Maxwell from Big Life Financial breaks down exactly how the R&D Tax Credit works, who qualifies (spoiler: way more people than you think), and why your accountant probably has no idea this even exists for small businesses. If you're spending money on AI tools, developing new products, creating new systems, testing new technologies, or basically doing anything innovative in your business – you need to listen to this episode. Like, right now.KEY INSIGHTS & TAKEAWAYSWhy Nobody Knows About This (And Why Your Accountant Doesn't Either)From 1981 to 2015, the R&D Tax Credit was essentially only for Fortune 500 companies. That's why most accountants still think it's only for engineering firms and people in white lab coats. But the rules changed a decade ago, and small business owners can now tap into this incredible benefit – they just don't know it exists yet.The "Double Dip" That Sounds Illegal But Isn'tHere's where it gets insane: You already deduct your business expenses to lower your taxable income, right? Well, the R&D Tax Credit gives you an additional credit on top of that deduction for any money you spend on innovation, development, and qualified research activities. It's literally a dollar-for-dollar write-off of your tax bill – a credit, not just another deduction. You Can Go Backwards Three YearsThink about everything you spent money on in 2022, 2023, and 2024 developing new products, testing AI, creating new systems, hiring people to build things. You can amend your returns and get that money back. Mike got multiple direct deposits within weeks of filing. The July 2025 Game-ChangerPreviously, you had to depreciate the credit over five years. But the new bill passed on July 4th, 2025 changed everything – now you can take the full credit immediately for 2022, 2023, and 2024. Instead of waiting five years to get your money, you get it all at once. We're talking checks hitting your account in 3-6 weeks.Who Actually Qualifies (Probably You)If you're in tech, software, medicine, manufacturing, engineering, science, or any business where you're testing new technologies, creating new protocols, implementing AI, or developing new systems – you likely qualify. One of Justin's clients with just $450K in revenue got $5,000 back. Another with medical practices got $550,000. The range is anywhere from $2K to $500K+.Zero Risk, Zero Upfront CostJustin's team does all the research, all the work, and tells you exactly what you'll get back before you pay them anything. They only get paid when you get paid. And if the IRS somehow doesn't approve it or takes the money back, they refund everything. There's literally no risk. The Mindset Shift That Changes EverythingWhat Mike loves most about this isn't just the money – it's the permission it gives you to innovate without fear. When you know you'll get a tax credit back even if your experiment fails, you take bigger swings. You hire faster. You test more. You grow. Mike used his R&D credits to hire four new people and expand internationally. It's Not Just For "Lab Coat" BusinessesIf you're creating courses, building AI workflows, developing new client onboarding systems, testing marketing automation, or prototyping new tools with your team – that counts. The key is documentation: videos, transcripts, proof you paid people, proof you spent the money on qualified activities.TIME STAMPS[00:00:00] This Is Literally Free Money Mike introduces the R&D Tax Credit and why he was initially skeptical when Justin first told him about it.[00:01:39] Why This Credit Was Hidden From You Justin explains the history – how it was created in 1981 for big automakers and why small businesses didn't qualify until 2015.[00:03:14] The Practical Tactical: How The Double Dip Works Breaking down how you can deduct expenses AND get an additional tax credit on top of those same expenses.[00:06:08] Going Backwards In Time For Money How the 3-year lookback works and why Mike got multiple checks by amending past returns.[00:07:20] The July 4th, 2025 Game-Changer The new law that allows you to take the full credit immediately instead of depreciating over 5 years – and how to capture all that money right now.[00:09:04] Don't Self-Disqualify Justin's plea to business owners: stop putting yourself on the outside of the red velvet rope. Let an expert disqualify you, don't do it yourself.[00:11:18] Rethinking Your Business Through The Innovation Lens How working with Justin's team helps you see your business differently and classify activities you didn't realize counted as R&D.[00:13:49] The Permission To Innovate Why the R&D Credit is actually a government-backed de-risking mechanism that gives you permission to experiment and fail.[00:15:46] What Mike Did With His Money How Mike reinvested his R&D credits into marketing, AI tools, and hiring – growing instead of contracting during uncertain times.[00:17:19] The Timeline: How Fast The Money Arrives From filing to direct deposit – Justin breaks down the typical 3-6 week timeline and what to expect.[00:22:18] Real Numbers: $450K Revenue to $550K In Credits Justin shares actual case studies – from a small business getting $5K back to a medical practice owner receiving $390K net after fees.[00:25:27] The Final Offer: Zero Risk, 100% Guarantee Justin's complete breakdown of the risk-free structure – you only pay when you get paid and keep the money. If you've ever felt like the tax code is written by rich people for rich people, this episode will change your mind. The R&D Tax Credit was literally built for small and mid-market business owners who are innovating and taking risks. And if you haven't claimed it yet, you're leaving your money on the IRS's table for no reason.Go to capabilityamplifier.com/tax to schedule a no-obligation consultation with Justin's team and find out exactly how much you qualify for.Trust me on this one. I was skeptical too. Then I got the checks.– Mike
January comes with a lot of pressure to reset, reinvent, and “start fresh.” But when you're walking through an unwanted separation, that pressure can feel overwhelming and completely out of sync with where your heart actually is. In this episode, we talk about why you don't need to reinvent yourself just because the calendar changed. This conversation is about releasing the expectation to have it all figured out and giving yourself permission to move into the new year gently, at your own pace. - - - - - - - - - - - - Want that chapter checklist just Click Here! The end of the year can bring a lot of pressure to reflect, reset, and reinvent yourself all at once. Some people love the fresh-start energy of January, while others feel overwhelmed, resistant, or just plain tired. Wherever you fall on that spectrum, this episode is an invitation to step away from the noise and approach the transition into a new year in a way that actually feels supportive. In this short episode, I talk about why January isn't as powerful as we've been led to believe, why there's no single “right” way to do personal growth, and how you don't need resolutions, routines, or lifestyle overhauls to be worthy of change. I also guide you through a simple end-of-year reflection designed to help you close the year with honesty and move forward with clarity—without pressure or what might feel like performative positivity. In this episode, we explore: Why you don't have to begin the year with resolutions, intentions, or rigid routines in order to grow or change How January is just a date on the calendar, and why meaningful resets can happen at any point in the year The importance of questioning advice that claims there's only one correct way to heal, grow, or live well A simple end-of-year inventory that invites you to reflect on: The wins and moments where you showed up for yourself The lessons you learned about your needs, limits, and patterns The losses, endings, and disappointments that shaped your year What you're ready to stop carrying forward into the next year Why focusing on how you want to feel can be more grounding than focusing on what you want to accomplish How choosing a few feeling-words for the year ahead can serve as a compass rather than a set of rules As you step into the new year, remember that you're not behind and you don't need to have everything figured out right away. You're allowed to move slowly, do things differently, and begin again whenever it feels right for you. Resources from this episode: Write Your Way Through It starts on January 21st! This is the episode I've been excited about for months! In the final episode of the year, I'll be going in detail about what you can do to set goals and become the best version of yourself in 2026. I'll start by going through my process this year of how you can best do this. It involves writing a review of the good and bad of the previous year, so you can appreciate your successes and think about what could have gone better. We then talk about planning for the year ahead, and break it apart into categories, and then finally set some actionable habits so you can make progress towards these goals.I also spend a lot of time sharing personal details from my own review, so you can see what it looks like, and also learn (and laugh) at my mistakes.Don't forget to click the shownotes link below and use my simple template to write your own review.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast357Get access to coaching, group classes, and 100s of bonus lessons and episodes on Level Up English.➡️ Become a Member Today: https://www.levelupenglish.school/join/➡️ Join the Free Mini Course - https://www.levelupenglish.school/mini⭐️ Join Level Up English - https://www.levelupenglish.school Become a member and get: Podcast Transcripts Private Podcast Group Classes Private Coaching And over 500 online lessons!

In this episode of Marketer of the Day, Joshua Adams returns to join Robert Plank, sharing the personal and professional pivots that set him on his current path. Listeners will learn about the importance of shared language, how consistency in leadership systems prevents organizational drift, and why, ultimately, professional success is built atop lessons learned from failure. Joshua also highlights the fulfillment he discovers daily by coaching leadership teams and empowering them to do their best work. Quotes: “Success is a big pile of failure that you're standing on. Without our failures, we are not, we cannot be successful.” “When you set that artificial sense of urgency, you spark the energy and momentum that gets things done. It's healthier, and it pushes us forward.” “Language matters. Calling things by different names creates confusion, but common language builds clarity and alignment across the team.” Resources: Connect with Joshua Adams on LinkedIn Learn more about how Joshua helps leaders build healthy, sustainable companies on their website.

How do you move faster with AI and cloud innovation without losing control of security along the way? Recorded live from the show floor at AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, this episode of Tech Talks Daily features a timely conversation with Kimberly Dickson, Worldwide Go-To-Market Lead for AWS Detection and Response Services. As organizations race to adopt agentic AI, modernize applications, and manage sprawling cloud environments, Kimberly offers a grounded look at why security must still sit at the center of every decision. Kimberly explains how her role bridges two worlds at AWS. On one side are customers dealing with prioritization fatigue, fragmented security signals, and growing pressure to do more with fewer resources. On the other hand, there are the internal service teams building products like Amazon GuardDuty, Amazon Inspector, and AWS Security Hub. Her job is to connect those realities, shaping services based on what customers actually struggle with day to day. That perspective sets the tone for a conversation focused less on hype and more on practical outcomes. We unpack how AWS thinks about security culture at scale, from infrastructure and encryption through to threat intelligence gathered across Amazon's global footprint. Kimberly shares how AWS uses large-scale honeypots to observe attacker behavior in real time, feeding that intelligence back into detection services while also working with governments and industry partners to take down active threats. It is a reminder that cloud security is no longer just about protecting individual workloads, but about contributing to a safer internet overall. The conversation also dives into new announcements from re:Invent, including the launch of AWS Security Hub, extended threat detection for EC2 and EKS, and the emergence of security-focused AI agents. Kimberly explains how these tools shift security teams away from manual investigation and toward faster, higher-confidence decisions by correlating risks across vulnerabilities, identity, network exposure, and sensitive data. The goal is clear visibility, clearer priorities, and remediation that fits naturally into existing workflows. We also explore how AWS approaches security in multi-cloud and hybrid environments, why foundational design principles still matter in an AI-driven world, and how open standards are helping normalize security data across vendors. Kimberly's reflections on re:Invent itself bring a human close to the episode, highlighting the pride and responsibility felt by teams building systems that millions of organizations depend on. As AI adoption accelerates and security teams are asked to keep pace without slowing innovation, what would it take for your organization to move faster while still trusting the foundations you are building on?
