Great Southern Nights, which returns mid-March after skipping a year due to a particularly rough stretch of the pandemic, is a mass celebration of music and community. Following a two-year stretch like nothing we've experienced, finally, a weeks-long coming out party, a knees-up after too long locked up. And it promises to provide a much-needed boost for the state's live music ecosystem, one that's been razed by the health crisis. This year's feast of live includes concerts from Jimmy Barnes, Amy Shark, Jessica Mauboy, The Veronicas, Baker Boy, Peking Duk, Courtney Barnett, Daryl Braithwaite, Archie Roach, James Reyne, Missy Higgins, Kasey Chambers and scores more, with shows lighting up deep in the regions and, of course, Sydney. This year's programme is “bigger and better,” says Annabelle Herd, CEO of ARIA, which spearheaded the initiative in partnership with the state government, and delivered through Destination NSW, its agency for tourism and major events sectors. With Great Southern Nights, “we wanted to find a way to both inject financial resources into the industry, work and help the live industry back on its feet,” she explains. “That's why the programme was initiated in 2020. None of us thought we'd be here in 2022; we figured we'd be way further down the track in terms of bringing music back.” After two years locked in a deep freeze, live music desperately needs a relaunch. Consumer confidence has been stripped back, thanks to the stop-start nature of lockdowns and constantly-changing rules from above. “There is a confidence issue at the moment,” Herd admits. “The only way to overcome that is to put on great shows, show people that they can get back to live music. And that it is worth doing it.” Critically, for artists and every professional in the food chain, no one will be working this event for free. Though fees aren't made public, “everybody involved gets paid,” Herd confirms. “That was our big intention. We wanted to inject some funding into the industry which so desperately needs it.” The project couldn't come at a more urgent time. Live venues are stuck in a perfect shit storm. When news broke last month that The Lansdowne Hotel was set to call last drinks, it was the latest blow for a sector thumped by lockdowns, low confidence and developers' never-ending appetite for apartment blocks. The data bears that out. The Australia Live Music Business Council (ALMBC) issued a sobering report in late 2020, which found 70% of music businesses won't last more than 6 months. Some 30% would not last more than 3 months. Matters have improved, though business is a long way from pre-COVID heights. Based on members data captured by APRA AMCOS, live music activity in the month of December 2021 — typically a peak time — was at just 6 per cent of the pre-COVID period, the society's CEO Dean Ormston has said. Then, in time, talks will ramp up on returning Great Southern Nights as an annual event.

Much like the inner rings of a cut-open tree, there are a surprising degree of layers to Sydney trio STUMPS. Although they boast a confident, extroverted frontman in Kyle Fisher, he had never actually even so much as sang a note on stage prior to the band's formation in the late 2010s. Their rhythm section, meanwhile - bassist Merrick Powell & drummer Jonathan Dolan - had never played indie-rock before; instead, their bread and butter was hardcore punk matinees - making songs to literally scream at the sun in scene stalwarts Perspectives. So, how did all three end up making jaunty post-punk-revival-revival indie-disco? Gather round, and we'll tell you a tale. Special thanks to Kyle Fisher, Pat O'Hara, Beau Somers and The Lansdowne Hotel. Produced and edited by Paul McWhirter. Additional editing by David James Young. With the recent release of third single 'Tic/Toc', Sydney outfit The Mis-Made are slowly building anticipation for a full-length release next year.Drawing inspiration from a recent controversial court case involving a high ranking religious identity, lead guitarist/vocalist Jess Finlayson doesn't hold back with both her lyrics and thoughts."Musically it's quite heavy", she said of the single. "We had two new band members join at the beginning of the year so it's getting a bit heavier but it still has that punk, pop sort of a vibe. It's a pretty heavy content song. I kind of wrote it around the Pell case so I was really angry about the power dynamic of people getting away with doing disgusting things to people and pretty much walking away from it. We recorded it only a couple of weeks ago and did the film clip in the studio at the same time which is a bit different for us because we usually go a little bit over the top with our clips (laughs)".In the full interview Jess runs us through the song and film clip in greater detail, reveals the release plans for an upcoming album and how it differs from earlier material, the value of releasing singles in the modern music age, former band Nitocris, her early vision for The Mis-Made and how she wanted the band to differ musically from Nitocris, touring, her thoughts on how to improve the Australian music industry, future shows and more.UPCOMING SHOWSNovember 23 - The Post Office Hotel, Coburg with CASHDecember 13 - The Lansdowne Hotel supporting Hard-Ons for Sydney album launch

Banoffee is regarded as one of the most forward-thinking and innovative pop/dance songwriters working today. With co-signs from the likes of SOPHIE and Charli XCX, not to mention a string of killer fashion collabs, she holds the captive attention of a global audience. Before all that though, Banoffee was Martha Brown - a part of Melbourne's Two Bright Lakes collective and one third of art-pop outsiders Otouto. It's a unique Venn diagram that few artists truly fit into, and before her headlining show at the Lansdowne Hotel this past March she explained just how she managed to transition between the two. It was during his third year at High school he began fiddling with DJ equipment. Soup learnt about the dazzling new music form hip-hop and began developing production skills on crude sampling equipment in luxurious 8bit, his computer had an amazing 2 megabytes of memory. He began digging for samples and was mostly enthralled by Rhythm and Blues, Soul, early electronic music and spoken word records. Soup has recently signed to the reformed Creative Vibes which is now under the umbrella of MGM Groove Merchants. Look out for a new album early in 2010. Soup has remixed Aria nominated Watussi as well as Cookin On 3 Burners, both of which are on the amazing Knowfoowl label. Soup has DJed in many clubs around Australia including a long residency at Tonic and Blue hotel and the legendary Sounds of Seduction with Jay Katz from the Mu Meson Archives. Check him out currently at The Marble Bar, Miss Peaches, Tokyo Sing Song, Palmer & Co, The Bank Upstairs, The Civic Hotel, Cafe Lounge and The Lansdowne Hotel. His sets are always eclectic but the common thread is soul. His first love is Rhythm and Blues but don’t be surprised to hear lots of different styles of music mixed and blended into his sets. Founding the Fonke Knomaads, Soup became producer, DJ and part time MC for the left field Sydney Hip-hop pioneers. They released a 5 track E.P. called "The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of..." on the now defunct label PoBoy records .Soup moved on to sign with influential Australian record label Creative Vibes . He soon released the groundbreaking Trip-Hop Album "Souperloops". Soup coined the term sampology and his tracks began popping up on several international compilations as well as having an album of the week on JJJ. This was the first local hip hop release to be given such an honour. The album was influential to local bands such as The Resin Dogs and Fretless. Further releases include collaborations with Fat Pizza star Sleek the Elite, the mini album "Eclectro" and the feature length album "From Anuva Planet" featuring Swollen Members and Gift of Gab from Blacalicious . Soup's last release was "Beatroot-The Edible Root of the Beat" which is out on Invada records. A label run by members of Katalyst and Portishead. It is an album true to form with a variety of hip-hop and twisted electronic styles to keep those kids jumping.
