Welcome to Day 2933 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2933 – Wisdom Nuggets – Proverbs 2:16-22 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2933 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2933 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The title for today's Wisdom-Trek is: The Road to the Shades – Rescued from Broken Covenants and the Realm of Death On our previous episode, on Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Thirty-Two, we explored Proverbs chapter two, verses nine through fifteen, discovering how divine wisdom enters our hearts to act as a watchful sentinel. We saw how this internal guard rescues us from evil men who speak twisted words, turn away from upright paths, and take dark pleasure in doing wrong. Today, as we step onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Thirty-Three of our ongoing trek, we arrive at the solemn, dramatic climax of Proverbs chapter two, focusing on verses sixteen through twenty-two. Here, Solomon turns his attention to the second major threat facing every traveler on the road of life: the seductive lure of the immoral woman, and the tragic ruin of broken covenants. Over my fifty years of studying Biblical wisdom, and through my seventy years of walking this earth—watching marriages thrive and watching families fracture—I have observed that there are two great reefs upon which human destinies are broken: the love of dishonest gain, and the surrender to unbridled passion. Both offer flattering promises, but both end in the cold darkness of destruction. Today, Solomon shows us how wisdom preserves our covenant integrity, keeping our feet planted safely on the path of life. Let us open our ears to the solemn warning recorded in the New Living Translation, grouping together the logical, contiguous thoughts found in Proverbs chapter two, verse sixteen, and verse seventeen. Wisdom will save you also from the immoral woman, from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman. She has abandoned her husband and ignored the covenant she made before God. Look at the dual description Solomon provides in verse sixteen! Wisdom rescues you from "the immoral woman" and from "the seductive words of the promiscuous woman." In the original Hebrew text, these two phrases utilize the terms zarah and nokriyah—which literally translate as the "strange woman" or the "foreign woman." In ancient Israel, this was not merely a comment on nationality; it described someone who was spiritually and morally outside the bounds of Yahweh's covenant community! She represents an alien, destructive way of life that stands in direct opposition to Lady Wisdom. Notice, however, where her primary power lies: it is in her speech! Just like the wicked man in verse twelve whose words were twisted, the immoral woman uses "seductive words." In Hebrew, her speech is described as smooth, slippery, and flattering—telling the unsuspecting youth exactly what his foolish ego wants to hear! But look at verse seventeen, where Solomon exposes her true character beneath the smooth words! "She has abandoned her husband and ignored the covenant she made before God." In the original language, her husband is called the alluph of her youth—the intimate companion, guardian, and chief friend of her early years. She didn't just walk away from a legal contract; she fractured a deep, personal partnership. Even more sobering, she "ignored the covenant she made before God." In the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview, marriage was never viewed as a mere temporary, secular arrangement. Marriage was a sacred, binding covenant sworn in the presence of Yahweh and His heavenly assembly! To break those vows is to defy the cosmic order of the Most High God. In my seventy years of life, I have watched smooth, flattering talk break up marriages that took decades to build. Seduction always promises secret intimacy, but it delivers covenant betrayal. The narrative takes a chilling, cosmic turn as Solomon pulls back the curtain to reveal the hidden destination of her house, combining the contiguous thoughts found in Proverbs chapter two, verse eighteen, and verse nineteen. Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to the grave. None who go to her ever return or find the paths of life. These two verses contain some of the most haunting, serious language in the entire Book of Proverbs! Solomon warns, "Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to the grave." In the ancient Hebrew mindset, the word translated here as "the grave" or "the dead" is Rephaim—a term deeply embedded in the ancient Near Eastern divine-council worldview! The Rephaim were associated with the shades, the sunken spirits of the dead, and the dark, chaotic underworld of Sheol. Solomon is revealing a terrifying spiritual geography: her house is built directly on the cliff-edge of hell! Crossing her threshold is not a harmless romantic adventure; it is a downward descent into the realm of spiritual death. Look at the sobering finality expressed in verse nineteen: "None who go to her ever return or find the paths of life!" While this is poetic hyperbole—because God's grace can redeem any repentant soul—it highlights a brutal, practical reality that I have witnessed time and again over my fifty years of studying wisdom. Sexual immorality and covenant betrayal create a profound, spiritual numbness that paralyzes the conscience. Once a person crosses that boundary, sacrificing their marriage, their reputation, and their relationship with God on the altar of passing pleasure, the path back to wholeness is extraordinarily steep, painful, and rare. The house of temptation promises paradise, but its hallway leads straight into the dark chamber of the Rephaim. Wisdom stands at the door, crying out: "Do not step inside!" Having exposed the catastrophic trap of the immoral path, Solomon brings the entire second chapter of Proverbs to a triumphant, dual-sided conclusion, grouping together the logical thoughts found in Proverbs chapter two, verse twenty, verse twenty-one, and verse twenty-two. So follow the steps of the godly, and stay on the paths of the righteous. For only the godly will live in the land, and those with integrity will remain in it. But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be ripped away. Look at how Solomon synthesizes the entire chapter into one clear, decisive forks-in-the-road moment! In verse twenty, he urges, "So follow the steps of the godly, and stay on the paths of the righteous." This brings us full circle back to the central theme of Proverbs: life is a journey, a trek! You cannot walk down the path of compromise and expect to end up at the destination of peace. You must intentionally align your steps with those who fear the Lord. Then, in verse twenty-one and verse twenty-two, Solomon contrasts the ultimate destiny of the two paths using the profound imagery of "the land." He declares, "For only the godly will live in the land, and those with integrity will remain in it. But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be ripped away!" In ancient Israelite covenant theology, "the land"—the aretz—represented the place of Yahweh's presence, protection, blessing, and inherited rest. To dwell securely in the land meant having a permanent future, a thriving family, and a lasting legacy. The godly and those with integrity—those who are tamim, wholehearted and blameless—are firmly rooted like deep oak trees that no storm can uproot! In stark contrast, look at what happens to the wicked and the treacherous: they are "removed" and "ripped away!" The Hebrew word used here implies being yanked up by the roots, like noxious, poisonous weeds purged from a garden. They thought they were building an empire through their deceit, greedy shortcuts, and immoral conquests, but in the end, they leave behind no lasting root, no honor, and no legacy. They vanish from the land like smoke. As we bring our trek through Proverbs chapter two to a close today, consider the two destinations set before you. You can follow the slippery words of the culture that lead straight to broken covenants and spiritual death, or you can cherish the wisdom of God, walk with integrity, and remain firmly established in His blessing. Choose to walk on the highway of the righteous today, honor your covenants, and build a living legacy that will stand secure for generations to come. Many men believe women are difficult to understand, while many women believe men don't listen - yet both are usually seeking the same things: connection, trust, desire, acceptance, and playfulness. The real breakthrough in dating, attraction, romance, and relationships isn't becoming more impressive. It's becoming more curious, present, emotionally intelligent, and self-respecting.

“Theory said, it doesn't matter what you've read. It's how you read.” — Emily Eakin on the seduction of the FrenchmenWhen I was a graduate student at Berkeley in the Eighties, there was a bewildering rage for Frenchmen. Foucault in history, Derrida in literature, Althusser in political philosophy, Lacan in psychology. Not that anybody could quite explain what any of them meant — which only made their ideas even more compelling. It was the seduction of the American mind, especially its elite campus version. Innocent times with forty years of hindsight.Emily Eakin caught this Eighties fever for French theory at Harvard. Now an editor at the New York Times Book Review, Eakin has written The Frenchmen, or My Life in Theory, which is both a confessional of her own seduction and a serious piece of intellectual history.A self-described farm girl from Indiana — albeit one whose Francophile parents once left her waiting at a Paris nursery school because a Lévi-Strauss lecture went overtime — she fell for theory as the intellectual equivalent of a little black dress. It looked expensive, even off the rack, she confesses. For a middle-class Midwesterner, it seemed like a passport to Left-Bank sophistication. All you needed was the jargon, the black clothes and, in Eakin's case, the opera gloves. But her Frenchmen, Eakin warns, turned out to be a slippery bunch. Lacan was so difficult that professors cancelled their own classes rather than teach him. Althusser murdered his wife. Foucault's histories were as much fiction as fact. Not even Derrida took Derrida seriously. These were the men undoing the “master narratives” while an enthralled generation of cross-legged young feminists in their little black dresses took notes. And yet Eakin's Frenchmen may have the last laugh. Their theory of language — an impersonal system requiring no human at its center — presciently describes today's AI revolution. Foucault predicted that “man” would be erased like a face drawn in sand on the beach. Forty years on, that tide may be engulfing us all.Five Takeaways• The Little Black Dress of the Mind. Eakin grew up in a family of Francophiles — one of her earliest memories is her mother arriving late to the Paris maternelle because Claude Lévi-Strauss's lecture had run over — and arrived at Harvard as a middle-class kid from a middling Midwestern high school, painfully aware of the gaps in her education. Theory offered the shortcut: it didn't matter what you'd read, only how you read. The cliché about the little black dress is that it looks expensive even bought on sale off the rack at Macy's, and theory, Eakin says, was its intellectual equivalent. It was also, frankly, sexy — young professors in jeans lecturing on the masturbation of the comma in Henry James, as Lorrie Moore's barely-parodic parody had it, and students dressed in black. Eakin went as far as the opera gloves.• System Replaces the Self. After the war, Sartre's existentialism made every accurate thought an authentic act of resistance — a heroic message for a France humiliated by four years of Nazi occupation. But the postwar world was not being changed by individual actors, and Lévi-Strauss dismissed the whole business in Tristes Tropiques as “shop girl metaphysics.” Around the time the Berlin Wall went up, Althusser routed Sartre at the École Normale, and a new philosophy took hold, obsessed with vast impersonal forces: not humans controlling events but a structure — with language at its center. The moment that fascinated Eakin is that sixties moment when system replaced the self.• Difficult by Design — and Easy to Distort. A colleague of Eakin's at the Times was once assigned Lacan's lecture on The Purloined Letter; a few minutes into class, the professor cancelled it, admitting he didn't understand the text he had assigned. That is the level of difficulty in question. Underedited and self-indulgent, Eakin the editor concedes — but each Frenchman left behind one bold idea worth the struggle, like Lacan's mirror stage, in which identity is formed outside ourselves in an act of misrecognition. The difficulty carried a price: it made the work easy to parody, and conservative pundits handed the public a distorted picture. The Frenchmen never said truth doesn't exist, Eakin insists. Their message was to beware political claims masquerading as eternal truths.• Slippery Politics, Awkward Pasts. Foucault, insecure about his thinning hair, shaved his head, ditched the suits, and by 1970 was in the streets with a megaphone defending prisoners, immigrants, and workers — and he was in San Francisco at the start of the AIDS catastrophe, which is reason to take his politics seriously. Derrida was temperamentally otherwise: nothing follows from deconstruction, as Stanley Fish put it, and the moment of silence his classmates held for Stalin at the École Normale was a bit much for him. The posthumous exposure of de Man's collaborationist journalism hastened theory's American demise. And there was the paradox Eakin only saw while writing the book: men undoing the master narratives, and a generation of feminists — herself included — enthralled to them. De Beauvoir was the indomitable exception, awarded second place in the agrégation by jurors who could barely decide between her and Sartre.• The Frenchmen's Revenge: AI. When the chatbots got good, American linguistics went into a tailspin: Chomsky's account of language as a uniquely human, embodied endowment cannot explain a machine producing sophisticated sentences. The structuralists' theory — language as an impersonal system in which meaning derives from how words differ from one another — describes generative AI rather well, and scholars such as NYU's Leif Weatherby are now calling for a structuralist revival to understand it. De Man called language a machine; Foucault wrote of the proliferation of authorless discourse; Eakin's recent New York Times essay argues Foucault foresaw everything from AI to the deep state. The Frenchmen, she thinks, would be fascinated rather than appalled — and would remind us to be just as wary of AI's language as of anyone else's.About the GuestEmily Eakin is an editor at The New York Times Book Review. Seduction inside a long marriage sounds like a contradiction, and Dr. Anna Elton is here to tell us it is anything but. In this rich conversation, Christa welcomes Dr. Elton to unpack her framework for what she calls the desire equilibrium, the idea that desire is not one thing but three: desiring yourself, desiring your partner, and letting yourself feel wanted. Most couples pour all their energy into the middle one and wonder why nothing shifts. Dr. Elton explains why self-desire is the least threatening place to begin and also the most skipped, why receiving desire is genuinely harder than giving it, and how we quietly push love away the moment it arrives by downplaying a compliment, deflecting with humor, or changing the subject before the feeling has time to land. She also makes the case that context changes everything, that the very same loving gesture can feel inviting in one moment and invasive in the next, and that timing, mental load, and emotional transition often matter far more than the gesture itself. This episode offers a real path back, one that begins not with technique but with learning your own worth, and not being afraid to truly focus on the magic you can create together once again or for the very first time! Get it here: found.ee/crowd011 CROWD welcomes Gina Demarchi with 'Other Side', a driving 4-track EP that adds a new voice to the label's growing roster. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Gina Demarchi has spent the last nine years refining her signature hypnotic blend of tribal-infused grooves, rolling percussion and emotionally charged energy, showcasing a sound rooted in 2000s techno and dubbed chords. As a resident at the event series Fungi and founder of her own label Seduction, she has built a strong reputation through performances all across South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and beyond. Opening track 'Never Enough' immediately sets the tone. Powered by a tom-driven bassline, huge open hats and uplifting chord melodies, it moves with a propulsive forward energy that plants the listener firmly on the dancefloor from the first bar. Next up on the A-side is 'I'm In Love', where endlessly echoing warm chords churn above a pulsing low end while marching claps and driving percussion lock the track into pure peak-time territory, serving as a reliable anchor for any uncompromising techno set. The title track 'Other Side' leans deeper and groovier, combining a gliding bassline with swinging chord stabs and crisp percussion that give full focus to the track's powerful low-end movement. Sitting somewhere between hypnotic and relentless, it is perhaps the clearest expression of what makes Gina Demarchi's sound so compelling. Closing cut 'Lonely' strips things back but lands with maximum impact: fast-paced chord repetitions, tight closed hats and sub-heavy drums generate a sense of momentum, creating a track that feels explosive and intense without relying on excessive speed. With 'Other Side', Gina Demarchi delivers a high-impact debut that reflects both the raw spirit of her unmistakable sound and the identity of the CROWD universe. The 11th release of the label is another statement from a label that has consistently refused to follow trends, instead carving out a singular identity rooted in raw energy. Today's episode explains why and how well-intentioned Christian political advocates, notably in regard to the politics of abortion, can be taken captive by the empty traditions and philosophies of men that are “not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8). David shows why enacting "righteous" statutes is not really the issue in our day; it's far bigger than many Christians think.
