Send us a textJoin Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicianWhat happens when a Sydney accountant stumbles upon country music by chance and follows an unexpected path to stardom? Six-time Golden Guitar winner Amber Lawrence reveals all in this charming conversation about musical journeys and finding your passion later in life.Amber's story begins with a surprising revelation – she didn't pick up a guitar until age 22 and had no childhood dreams of musical fame. A chance purchase of a LeAnn Rimes CD sparked her interest in country music, leading to a fateful trip to Tamworth in 2004 where she placed second in a talent competition. Fast forward twenty years, and she's one of Australia's most celebrated country artists, recently inducted into the prestigious Galaxy of Stars alongside legends like Kasey Chambers and Lee Kernaghan. The conversation delves into her 2022 ARIA #1 country album "Living for the Highlights," which captured the emotional rollercoaster of the pandemic years while maintaining Amber's characteristically positive outlook. She shares the story behind her latest single "Comeback Queens," a joyful anthem celebrating those nights out with longtime friends where everyone recaptures their carefree youth – "spinning around with Kylie Minogue and Shania Twain on the dance floor having a good time."Amber gives us a glimpse of her busy schedule, balancing an extensive tour, European travel, and preparation for hosting the iconic Deni Ute Muster festival in October. She also discusses her upcoming album (now scheduled for January release), her pioneering children's country music albums, and why country music's authentic storytelling continues to win over new fans who "can now admit they like country music."Join us for this heartwarming conversation that proves it's never too late to find your true calling. Whether you're a longtime country music fan or just beginning to appreciate the genre, Amber's journey from corporate office to country stages will inspire you to follow your unexpected passions. What has Amber Lawrence been up to lately?  Let's find out!Get out when you can, support local music and I'll see you down the front!!Visit: ThatRadioChick.com.au

Reflecting on a year of phenomenal guests, we are bringing you a selection of the Best Conversations of 2024.Kasey Chambers grew up surrounded by country music, singing around the campfire with her family, and listening to her father's cassettes of old country classics. She now makes her own country music, which has won her a devoted following and recognition as one of Australia's favourite country music stars. Kasey Chambers started singing around the campfire as a little girl. She and her family spent much of the year camping on the Nullarbor Plain, where her dad would hunt for foxes and rabbits.Kasey and her brother Nash had a free range childhood, and went to sleep to the sound of their father's rifle as he worked through the night. Singing came naturally to Kasey, and she loved all the old country classics, as well as some Cyndi Lauper and Bruce Springsteen.Kasey has spent her life making music and connecting with audiences. It's what she believes she was put on the earth to do.This episode of Conversations contains discussions about country music, Australian outback, hunting, families, guitars, singing, vocals, musicians, singers, Country Music Association, CMA, Country Music Awards, Golden Guitars, ARIA Awards, music awards, popular music, Crowded House, Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, family relationships, marriage, divorce, parenting, women musicians.

It's not an actual list of dickheads, although let's face it, by this stage of life, we've all met a few of those. No, this list is for Kasey Chambers herself. It's a list that signals to her that she isn't listening to her gut - something that, by now, many of us MIDs have learned is our secret weapon... Kasey has built a career tuning into her gut - she calls it her little foghorn. The foghorn told her that her first album should be called The Captain, despite the suits thinking it was a terrible idea. The Captain went on to go platinum three times. The foghorn who pushed her to ask Ed Sheeran if he might like to sing with her, even though she was pretty convinced he might be… busy. (Spoiler Alert: He did).  The foghorn that told her to seek help for an eating disorder that brought her to her knees, to leave a marriage that was no longer working, to parent against the grain, and to step off the glamorous but arduous international touring circuit to get back to what she loved. She travelled around Australia, in a van, with her family, singing songs to people who wanted to hear them. This conversation is an absolute gem because Kasey is. It's dripping with hard-won mid-lessons, good advice and stories of times everything went tits up, many of them recounted in Kasey's book, called - you guessed it - Just Don't Be a Dickead. Broken Hill-born country singer-songwriter Raechel Whitchurch spent most of her childhood travelling in her family's country music band, before establishing herself as one of Aussie music's most recognisable country artists.   But her path to songwriting was far from guaranteed. In fact, it wasn't until her family saw Kasey Chambers' family group The Dead Ringer Band perform in Broken Hill that country music became a family career. Her Dad thought it would be a great way to make a living, so they all became self-taught musicians.   After several local talent quests, the Lee family packed their lives into a caravan and hit the road on two laps of Australia and a six-month stint in Arnhem Land performing in their travelling country family band, The Lees. Raechel, the eldest, was aged only 12, but it's a lifestyle she has taken on as her own into adulthood with her husband Ben and three children on the road as well.   And as Raechel tells us on Streets of Your Town, her songs don't flinch from telling the hardships as well as the fun times of life in rural and remote Australia.   Contact Nance AKA The Wandering Journo and find socials links HERE   Get the full story, and join The Wandering Journo tribe at substack.soyt.com  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Talking Walls” Lilly Winwood grew up in the English Coutnryside, a locale that was lush, expansive and quiet. The hum and groove of a big city was calling, so at 18 she left home for a little more social and artistic volume. After a few stops in a few years she ended up in Nashville, which was not only a comfortable place—her mom was from Tennessee and she visited regularly as a kid—it was a place filled with like-minded artists. Lilly Winwood has been on a creative tear—her debut Time Well Spent was assured and filled with promise and her follow up Talking Walls is a massive leap forward. Shimmering with wisdom and maturity, Talking Walls is filed with equal parts strength and maturity. Bringing to mind Kasey Chambers or Patty Griffin, Talking Walls isn't afraid to confront the big questions and the results are massively satisfying. A rollicking, melodic and decidedly memorable set, Talking Walls is a refreshing blast of roots rock thats as fresh as it is timeless. Lilly Winwood has done a lot already in her career—she sang back up for her dad Steve Winwood and even opened for him on occasion. She's also toured with Jackie Greene and Todd Snider and was on the bill for the All Star Neil Young Tribute show. With a voice thats imbued with power and life, Winwoods' delivery is breezy and ageless and her songs remind us that life can put you through it but the good stuff is waiting on the other side. www.lillywinwood.org www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Absolutely THRILLED to announce new guest, Catherine Britt, to The Story! When you look at modern country music you can identify a diverse range of styles that have evolved from the traditional roots form. From pop country to bush ballads, acoustic folk-leaning songs to rousing country rock and the polymorphic blend of Americana. One Australian artist that can lay claim to all of these strains is Catherine Britt, a songwriter who has already packed a respected and highly acclaimed career into her first two decades as a recording artist. From Newcastle to Nashville, Catherine made the move to the home of country music at just 17 years old. It proved to be a brave decision that gave her immeasurable experience as a musician, insight into the machinations of the industry and a contract with the legendary RCA Records. Upon returning to Australia in 2009, Catherine set about recording her debut full length album Dusty Smiles and Heartbreak Cures, the first of five consecutive albums nominated for Album Of The Year at the CMAA (Country Music Awards of Australia). The accolades didn't stop there. Along the way she has received five Golden Guitar Awards, the CMA Global Artist Of The Year award in 2010 and six ARIA Award nominations for Best Country Album. The critical acclaim for her albums and reputation as a performer has seen Catherine tour and perform with some of the biggest names in music, including Sir Elton John, Don McLean, Kasey Chambers, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Chris Isaak and Keith Urban. Not content with just carving out an enviable career as a songwriter, performer and recording artist, Catherine has also been involved in the wider country music community as a radio broadcaster on ABC's Saturday Night Country show, TV host on CMC's Alt Country program and most recently as the editor and owner of Rhythms, Australia's premiere roots music magazine.Life has a way of throwing curveballs, both good and bad, and the few years have seen Catherine fight and win a battle with breast cancer, give birth to two boys, and leave her marriage.“Over the years being an artist has meant different things to me and I've had different goals. My goal from when I was a young girl was to make money from music which I've been able to do and I'm really proud of. At different points of my life I've felt the pull of wanting to be famous and chasing that dream, living in Nashville and then realising that that wasn't what I wanted to do. It's constantly changing but my ultimate goal has been fulfilled and I can never see myself not making music. It's what I've always done and it comes naturally to me and I feel like it's what I'm meant to do, that and being a mum.”You can find Catherine and her projects here:Website : http://www.catherinebritt.comFacebook : https://www.facebook.com/CatherineBrittFansYoutube :https://www.youtube.com/c/CatherineBrittMusicTwitter: @catherinebrittInsta : https://www.instagram.com/catherine_britt/Apple Music : https://music.apple.com/us/artist/catherine-britt/31726801Spotify : https://open.spotify.com/artist/2U7nIOFSqqsKaBdSIdL0iZ...Go see her at Tellus350 Aug 21st, 6pm!
