This week on Breaking Battlegrounds, Chuck Warren and Sam Stone are joined by Manhattan Institute Cities policy analyst Santiago Vidal Calvo and Washington Free Beacon editor and Middle East Forum junior fellow Alex Welz, plus a special radio edition of B's Corner true crime. Santiago Vidal Calvo Born in Caracas and now leading the Manhattan Institute's Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) efforts, Santiago opens with an on-the-ground report from Venezuela following the capture of Maduro — including the first American Airlines flight back to Caracas in nearly a decade — and explains why Trump must press for elections in Venezuela before the U.S. midterms if his policy is to survive a potential shift in Congress. He walks through how government agencies have weaponized "privacy" exemptions and bureaucratic stonewalling to block public records requests, and why Manhattan Institute is willing to take these fights to court when ordinary citizens cannot. Santiago then breaks down his Daily Wire piece on New Jersey Transit's $150 train ticket from Penn Station to MetLife for the 2026 World Cup — versus a $60 Uber on the same route — and contrasts New Jersey's mismanagement with Kansas City's pro-tourism approach of expanded bar and restaurant hours. In the second segment, he unpacks Mayor Zohran Mamdani's "racial equity plan" and the redefinition of poverty in New York City through a $150,000 "true cost of living" benchmark — which conveniently labels two-thirds of the richest city in America as unable to afford it, justifying a massive expansion of government with 400 new indicators and 600 goals. Santiago argues the real diagnosis isn't race but housing supply, the rent freeze, and the cost of opening a business. Follow Santiago on X: @SantiVidalC B's Corner B brings the 1981 disappearance and murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh from a Sears in Hollywood, Florida — a case that took 27 years to officially close, briefly entangled Jeffrey Dahmer as a suspect, and was ultimately tied to serial killer Ottis Toole. Out of unimaginable tragedy, Adam's father John Walsh launched America's Most Wanted, founded the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and helped drive the creation of the Amber Alert system. The team also revisits the era of the Sears catalog and what that brand once meant to American life. Alex Welz, an editor at the Washington Free Beacon and a junior fellow at the Middle East Forum with a master's in national security from the University of Haifa, walks through the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, why disarming Hezbollah remains a generational challenge despite UN Resolution 1701 and the Taif Agreement. On Iran, Alex argues the regime turned out far less fragile than Venezuela-style optimists hoped, but ballistic missile capacity, the navy, and oil revenues have all been dramatically degraded, and the latest wave of protests could still force a fold. In the podcast segment, the conversation deepens and Alex shares his prediction for where Iran stands by November 2026. $150 to take the train to a World Cup match is the kind of headline that makes you do a double take. We dig into the growing fight over World Cup 2026 public transit pricing and why some US host regions seem ready to treat trains and buses like a luxury upsell instead of the simplest way to move tens of thousands of people safely and fast. We start in Boston, where Gillette Stadium already has MBTA commuter rail service for Patriots games, then look at what changes when FIFA comes to town: bigger crowds, less parking due to fan zones and media, and a major push to move up to 20,000 riders per match. From there we get into the $80 fare proposal, the $35 million level-boarding platform expansion, and the bigger question of what counts as long-term transit infrastructure versus a temporary tournament expense. Then we head to the New York City area where matches at MetLife Stadium rely heavily on New Jersey Transit. The numbers are wild: a familiar $12.90 game-day trip turns into a $150 round-trip ticket for World Cup service, plus an $80 bus that still sits in traffic. We talk fairness for local fans, congestion and traffic impacts, and the awkward reality that regions can earn massive new tax revenue from World Cup tourism while still asking everyday riders to foot the bill at the fare gates. We close with brighter examples like Philadelphia SEPTA's sponsorship approach and Kansas City's $50 month-long regional pass and free airport coach, plus what these ideas reveal about better event transportation policy. If you like deep dives on public transit, World Cup travel logistics, and how cities can move crowds without punishing riders, subscribe, share the show, and leave a review.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

In this episode Jeff tears apart the latest assassination attempt against Donald Trump and the staggering security failures that allowed it to happen. From an armed suspect getting dangerously close to the president to the laughable claims that the system “worked” Jeff explains why this was a complete disgrace and why the response afterward was even worse. Jeff then breaks down the war with Iran and how what started with clear objectives quickly unraveled. Bad advice, unrealistic expectations and a fundamental misunderstanding of the enemy have led to a situation where Iran is now dictating terms. Trump's focus on markets and public perception over actual victory has turned a position of strength into an avoidable mess. The bigger problem is what this moment represents. Jeff argues this was likely the last real chance to cripple the world's leading terror regime and instead the United States blinked. The result is a stronger more emboldened enemy and a future that looks far more dangerous than it needed to be. Receive new episodes directly in your inbox: https://beyondthelegallimit.com/subscribe

California drivers are paying over $6 per gallon for gasoline, the highest prices in the nation. Despite accusations of price gouging against oil companies, a CBS News California investigation revealed the real culprits: state policies, refinery closures, and global supply risks. California's environmental regulations and unique fuel blend drive up baseline prices. Two refinery closures have reduced the state's refining capacity by nearly 20%, forcing California to outsource refining to Asia, which increases pollution and supply volatility. With rising costs and regulatory uncertainty, oil companies are incentivized to leave California, further exacerbating the problem. The Middle East conflict and China's fuel export halt add to the volatility, validating warnings that outsourcing refining increases price spike risks.

As I highlighted in my analysis, the average gas price margin is 1 to 3 cents per gallon, however during the week last week that had been expanded to 31-34 cents per gallon (and some higher than that through the weekend). But the question is, does that example meet the legal definition of “gouging” under law?

Virginia's recent winter storm brought with it the usual state of emergency announcements along with “the inevitable swooping in” of some politicians going “after anyone who's price gouging.” Price gouging laws basically mean things like “batteries,” “tree removal services,” food and water can't be sold at “unconscionably higher” prices than they were “10 days prior to the storm,” explains Scott Goodman, a defense attorney at The Goodman Law Firm in Charlottesville, Virginia. “The business or the supplier that can open its books and show that this is what it costs them to get the water [for example] and that the percentage of the profit that they're adding on top of that when they sell it to a customer is basically the same as it was prior to the state of emergency, that would again, speak to the fact that they're not price gouging. They're simply passing along a higher cost that they have to the customer.” Follow us on Instagram for EXCLUSIVE bonus content and the chance to be featured in our episodes: https://www.instagram.com/problematicwomen/ Connect with our hosts on socials!
