Interview by Angela CroudaceIt is hard to believe that the current line-up of the Hard-Ons (Blackie, Murray, Ray and Tim) have been together long enough to be putting out album number three, but it has to be true, because they are!I Like You A Lot Getting Older - which is out on October 4 - follows 2021's ARIA top 5 debuting I'm Sorry Sir, That Riff's Been Taken and last year's Top 30 debuting Ripper '23 and coincides with the band's 40th Anniversary Australian Tour PLUS the premiere of a new feature length documentary, The Most Australian Band Ever. These Aussie punk legends show no signs of slowing down. While I Like You A Lot Getting Older is undeniably a pop album, Blackie humorously labels it “Pop for old farts.” It's the kind of pop that embodies the Hard-Ons' signature style - not the Taylor Swift variety as he made clear!Despite having so much going on, guitarist Peter Black (Blackie) found time to speak with HEAVY's newest contributor Angela Croudace. We start by asking if he can actually get his head around the fact the Hard-Ons are about to celebrate 40 years as a band."I'm that old?", he laughed, "Excellent. No, I can't believe it. When I actually stop to think about it - which I never do. I never stop and I never think. Those two things, what are they? But when I do stop to think about it, it's kind of like, far out, that's a long bloody time."Angela brings up the new doco, The Most Australian Band Ever."I don't know anything about it," Blackie laughed. "We're not making it. I call him Johnno, but Jonathan Sequeira is making it and he made the phenomenal doco on Radio Birdman, which I loved and have seen four times. So when he approached us and said I'd like to make a doco we all said shit yeah. The dude that made the Birdman doco, for sure. So I'll see it when you see it. If you wanna go see it, and I'm sure in his hands it's gonna be quite fun."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersAustralian music was a melting pot of talent in the early 90s with bands like Tumbleweed, Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Magic Dirt and the Superjesus planting the initial seeds that would see them still knocking crowds dead to this day - some 30 years later.Punk upstarts the Hard-Ons were also a major player in the thriving scene, but it is an offshoot of that band - formed after internal bickering led to one of the band's many breakups - called Nunchukka Superfly who made perhaps the biggest impact of them all despite never releasing an album and disbanding after a few short years. In that time Nunchukka Superfly - Ray Ahn and Peter Black from Hard-Ons, Massappeal drummer Peter Allen and former Harpoon frontman and future Drones co-founder (and now JJ McCann Transmission main man) James McCann - earnt a fierce reputation as a must see live band, managing to record an albums worth of material that was seemingly lost to the ether and never to be seen or heard again.Until now.The masters of that album found their way back into the hands of McCann, who dutifully passed them along to the rest of the band, ensuring the collection of now timeless punk rock tunes would finally see the light of day.The band released Nunchukka Superfly 95 earlier this year and announced a run of shows in celebration, proving there's still life in the legs and lungs of this Australian musical enigma. And where there's life, there's hope, as evidenced by the fact Blackie and James reached out to us here at HEAVY to talk about the past, present and future of Nunchukka Superfly. We start with the album and ask how it felt to finally release it after so many years."I guess you could call it strange," Blackie mused, "but at the same time it felt really good, and I think we can thank James for that because I didn't even have a copy of the recordings. I forgot what it was like even. But James got in touch about a year and a half ago and said mate, have you heard that fucken thing we did all those many moons ago? It's really ferocious. We should release it and I remember thinking yeah, yeah, maybe one day. He sent me a copy, and I was like holy fuck he's right. This is mad.""I had it on cassette for years," James added. "And I think we all had a cassette copy initially, but I wore that out eventually. In Sydney Jason, who recorded it, was working across the road from where I lived at the Hopeton Hotel on the weekends, and he said I have that DAT tape of that Nunchukka Superfly recording, do you want a copy? I said yes, and I sat on that for years because I didn't have a DAT player (laughs). I had access to this old 90s DAT player about ten years ago at a friend's studio, so we plugged in the old player and put the cassette in and BAM, there it was loud and clear, and somehow I had stored it away well enough to obviously have not lost it. That was the start, then I got it digitized and sent it to Blackie and Ray."In the full interview, Blackie and James talk more about the release of their debut album, Nunchucka Superfly 95, after many years, and the upcoming reunion shows. They shared their memories of the band's formation, their last show in 1996, and their chemistry during the first jam session, expressing excitement about the reunion and the potential for future collaborations.Blackie and James also discussed the process of obtaining and digitizing the original recording of their debut album, emphasizing that no alterations were made to the original recording. They reflected on the quality of the music and the positive reactions on social media and strong initial sales, including overseas interest, and expressed pride and gratitude for the continued interest in their music after so many years.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Kris PetersJJ McCann is a musician well-travelled, negotiating over 30 years in the Australian music industry with his soul and integrity intact.Better known as one of the founding members of Nunchukka Superfly and his work with The Drones, McCann has busied himself with other just as talented bands over the years, with the one common denominator being McCann's driven approach to his craft and his humble and unassuming nature.Last year McCann released his first album under the monicker of JJ McCann Transmission called Hit With Love, collaborating with legendary producer Rob Younger of Radio Birdman and the New Christs who produced every second great Australian rock record in the 80s and 90s (Died Pretty, Hard-Ons, Lime Spiders, Celibate Rifles, Hoodoo Gurus). It proved a masterstroke for McCann, who reached a much wider audience with the album and created enough quality material to still be drawing singles from the album almost 12 months later. But talk to McCann and you get the impression his days of caring about status or success in music are long behind him - if in fact they were ever there. Instead, you get an artist who creates music for the thrill and love of the final result and the opportunity to share a common love with friends.Just the way it should be.With Nunchukka Superfly finally releasing their debut album recently and about to go on tour, McCann is understandably busy these days, but not too busy to be down for a chat with HEAVY."It was officially released last year," he said of the new solo album. "It was kind of a staggered thing that was followed by a couple of film clips, with the last one coming out in March called Amphibious Skin. It's been going well. It's been released here in Melbourne on CheerSquad Records and co-released with French label Beast Records. It's the first record I've released in Australia in 14 years. Everything else I've released in Spain or France, generally because there wasn't a lot of independent labels around 15 years ago, believe it or not. It's picked up a bit since then in Australia."In the full interview, JJ talks more about Hit With Love and the writing and recording process, working with Rob Younger, what sorts of things Younger contributed to the overall sound of the album, the changing tides of music and the importance of sticking to your own path, the release of Nunchukka Superfly's debut album and upcoming shows, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersFifty years of servitude in any industry is a great achievement, but fifty years in the music industry is something special. In an industry that rewards only when you have something of value to offer, bands are churned through the machine at a rapid rate of knots. Yesterday's heroes can quickly become tomorrow's nobodies with everything from changing fashions to styles to bad press being an avenue for failure.Australian rockers Radio Birdman are one of the few bands to not only survive half a century in the music industry but somewhat thrive as well.Radio Birdman were one of the first Australian bands to harness the punk rock attitude that swept through Britain, doing things their way no matter the consequences. They are one of those bands that as soon as you listen to their music you get the "ah, that's who sung it" feels, with an infectious and flippant brand of music showcasing all the hallmarks and foundations of great Aussie rock.To celebrate the occasion, Radio Birdman will hit the road for the Birdman 5-0 Tour, starting June 21, with fellow Australian icons Hard-Ons along for the ride.HEAVY caught up with founding member and guitarist Deniz Tek to take a trip down memory lane. We start by asking if Australia is ready for the finale."The venues that we're playing are essentially the same venues we played on the last tour," he began, "and the last couple of tours. The last time we went around Australia was just before the pandemic in 2019, and it's basically the same venues. We prefer to play two to three shows in a smaller club rather than one big show at the Enmore or the Palace or something like that. It's better for us to play in smaller places."It's a bittersweet tour, celebrating 50 years of the band, but also serving as a swansong, so we ask Deniz how long the band has known they would be ticking both things off at the same time."Just since November," he replied. "We hadn't really talked about it until then, but I was back in Australia for my daughters wedding and the band got together socially, and we talked it over and thought it might be a good idea."In the full interview we take a moment to reflect on what a great achievement 50 years is, the success of presale tickets, limiting the shows and why, what fans can expect, what the band expects from their crowds, the emotion that will surround the last ever show at the Manning Bar in Sydney on July 7, having Hard-Ons as support, Radio Birdman's legendary outsider status and how well it fits, being the underdog, what he has achieved personally and musically over his career, what's left for him to achieve, the band logo and some insights into its origin, his top three commandments of rock and more.
Interview by Kris PetersWhile many bands proclaim to be the real deal when it comes to punk rock, very few can say so definitively. Punk rock is/has and never will be a style of music that caters to the masses or measures itself on facts and figures. It is more music for the outcasts and disenfranchised who have little in common except for a united love of a brand of music that knows no boundaries. But mention The Damned to anyone with even a sniff of knowledge about punk, and you will invariably be met with the same respect and admiration for a band who truly started it all. They were officially the first ever punk band to release a single when they put out New Rose five weeks before the Sex Pistols released Anarchy In The U.K which led to them being the first British punk band to tour the United States. While undergoing several line-up changes in their 35-plus years as a band, there is one that stands out to many as The Damned's classic collection of musicians. Vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Captain Sensible, drummer Rat Scabies and bass player Paul Gray are the quartet widely regarded as the best unit, releasing the albums Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries while the group was together and now, for the first time since 1989, those four will share the stage together when The Damned hit Australia for the final time later this month.HEAVY managed to secure some rare time with Captain Sensible to run through the tour and career of The Damned, with him starting by revealing how he got his stage name."I acquired that name because I was a rabid drunk, actually," he offered, "and not at all sensible. So I got the name thrust upon me and have not been able to shake it off since. I'm getting old these days, so the drinking's taken a back seat, but I've still got the stupid name (laughs). The good news is over 40 years I've learned to play the guitar and the band is sounding quite good at the moment. If you like what The Damned do, we're doing a fair representation of those records that we made back in the 70s and 80s.""It's a great name, The Damned," he continued. "I think the Sex Pistols originally wanted it, but we got it first."We ask if it was hard getting the gang back together so to speak for this tour."No, coz Rat and Paul have been working together on a project with some Americans and me and Dave have been doing The Damned all this time," he replied. "There was a bit of bad blood, that was the only thing that could have got in the way, really. I mean, it was so long ago, I can't remember what we used to argue about (laughs). But it was all sorts of shenanigans, including fisticuffs, attacking each other with empty whisky bottles and stuff like that. As you do in punk rock bands, but we buried the hatchet, and we're getting on okay now. It's interesting to see what they've been doing all these years."In the full interview, Captain Sensible talks more about the tour and what to expect, why he thinks this line-up can be considered as classic, what he expects from his crowds live, demanding the Hard-Ons support the tour, his memories of recording them, the early days of The Damned and the musical climate that gave birth to them, beating the Sex Pistols to releasing the first ever punk single, Sid Vicious wanting to join The Damned as vocalist, the relationship between punk bands in the early days, how competitive the scene was, the age-old belief that punk is all about the attitude rather than the music, how punk music has changed over the years, The Damned's contribution to punk, his top three commandments of punk and more.

Pelosi's insane escalation is finding support from some of the worst people on this planet, many of them from the other side of America's illusory political divide. Reading by Tim Foley.
Monica Villaruel is an LA Native, a public research scientist, and a bonafide badass. She works for the California Department of Public Health - focusing on the areas of maternal, child, and adolescent health. She joins the podcast to talk about self-development, therapy, and emotional hard-ons (tune in to find out what these are). We coined the term emotional hard-on, so you won't find this kind of sexy talk anywhere else. Exclusively on This is EZ with Monica. Thank you for continuing to support the podcast. Just one note because I couldn't remember the name of the website during the podcast, so I'm sharing . Mark Manson's website is called Life Advice That Doesn't Suck. You can check it out by visiting https://markmanson.net/. His material is excellent. You won't regret it. I just finished taking his “Improving My Life” course. So good.
Tim Rogers, from You Am I, the Hard Ons and a host of other side projects told us about his very early experiences visiting St Kilda and the impression it left on him as a young musician. He chatted about the much-loved friends he has made here, his favourite venues and why he has called the place "home" for so long. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

One positive thing that I've taken away from the past two years is how big a role music plays in creating strong human connections. And there's not just the music, but the touring is especially important for just that physical connection. Artists meeting fans, fans meeting artists. Like-minded people brought together by the music, by what they have to say through that music. Common, strong bonds. I first met Jess Finlayson in 2017 when she came touring from Australia with her band at the time, The Mis-Made, en route to Rebellion Festival. We've become friends and stayed in touch through a period that no-one ever wants to go through again. Check out Jess's latest project Raising Ravens and fabulous EP In My Room which is full of her trademark harmonies and powerfully observational lyrics. So it's a real honour to have Jess on here where we get into stuff like how essential these human connections are, her childhood influences, what she learned about herself as a teen with her first band Nitocris, coming together again with her long-time musician friend Jill Jackson and her biggest ever challenge - teaching Blackie of the Hard-Ons to "go live"……Dig in!
Bazz and The Rev from Welsh pop-punk pioneers The Abs have graciously joined us in MLPP Towers this week! The brothers Oldfield have more stories than you can shake a slice of wedding cake at, so strap yourselves in as we talk buskin, Peel sessionin', Joe Dolce getting in touch, being pals with Green Day, putting on The Hard-Ons, touring economics and Newport back in the day.Tom's had a complaint but isn't complaining, Niall starts off grumpy but has the time of his life, we hear from our global reporter Mark Williamson in Estonia and a lot more besides! Your musical offerings are from Newtown Grunts, Dutch Rudders, Propeller, Hostage Eyes, Rebel Spell and The Bouncing Souls.Notable mentions: Diaz Brothers, Doctor Bison, Stereophonics, Bottlekids, Pizza Tramp
This week we get meta, as The Picture magazine's own pornographic afficianado, Harry Hard-On takes us through his own personal favourite skin flicks. We're joined by comedian Angus Gordon to take turns reading through some absolute filth, which ranges from the aggressively smutty, to outrageously kooky, and straight back into pure deranged and unhinged lunacy. We discover a racial slur that has gone to print, and then discuss a film wherein a man copulates with a rubber duck. Truly a horrifying and awful feature this week. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
What a fabulous way to end a fabulous Season 4 with Ray Ahn, co-founder of one of my favourite bands of all time - The Hard-Ons. In this fantastic episode, when Ray's not humming Ferry 'Cross the Mersey, we're talking about playing Liverpool (I was there!), Dave Grohl, what drew him to punk, what living with freedom means, the importance of truth, friendships, taking risks, gut instinct and not worrying about what people think of you.Thank you Ray, this was so memorable for me.(if you didn't know already, the Hard-Ons are back with a new record, magnificently called “I'm Sorry Sir, That Riff's Taken”)About Ray and the Hard-Ons:If not Australia's most successful independent band, they are certainly the most influential. And they remain resolutely underground, DIY and bloody fantastic. Along with Blackie (Peter Black), Ray is one of the original members and bass player with the band as well as the fella responsible for the band's very distinctive artwork. He released a book of around 750 pieces of his wonderfully subversive art in What I did during my School holidays and also one covering his Comic Book art. They're available from all good book stores. And some not so good ones too I imagine. And probably from Ray as well.He also formed Nunchukka Superfly, which is a much more avant garde, psychedelic wig out combo, and has written some very amusing blog posts – the ones about the ”punk pastry chef “ whipping up a magical $100 dessert, the shirt tucker and the case of mistaken Smashing Pumpkins identity are slabs of comedy gold from a highly talented curmudgeon A few years ago, when asked what to expect from a new Hard-ons album, he said “Tons of melody – concise but exciting tunes played very well by old idiots”I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste
