It's an early start for the gang, to the point Alex and Adam hadn't even had breakfast. But, thankfully, they filled their bellies chatting about Jordie Barrett's brain explosion, the Jag's excellent performance, refereering (again), the Stormers-Crusaders game and the rest of the Super Rugby action. Ben is also going on a boat. Off the field, baseball, Jeff Goldblum, the Cape Crusaders and Ma'a Nonu being a legend and CV reference make an emergence among other things. That's how we do. Blues co-captain Patrick Tuipulotu has promised his side will bring a hard, physical edge to their match against the Chiefs, a side he believes enjoy using "bully" tactics and who could receive some of their own medicine at Eden Park on Saturday.Tuipulotu's men, in 14th place, need a win to have any chance of making the playoffs knowing too they have been pushed around for too long by their rivals down State Highway 1.The Blues haven't beaten the Chiefs since 2011 and lost a thriller last month in Hamilton 33-29 despite a standout performance from midfielder Ma'a Nonu because the home side, led by lock Brodie Retallick, dominated the breakdown area.Tuipulotu and his side are determined that won't happen again. The Blues, who have won only one derby match this season – a win over the Highlanders at Eden Park in March – showed intensity and physicality in their 22-12 defeat to the Hurricanes last weekend and more of the same is required."They're a big, physical side and over the years they've prided themselves on being the bully," Tuipulotu said. "For us, we've come so close so many times it's really up to us to get over the line."Asked if it was more important to take a stand physically against the Chiefs than virtually any other team, he replied: "Yeah, if you want to bully the bully then that's the way to go."Tuipulotu added: "We've been put under the pump by the coaches and because of that we've had a good training week. It's been one of the best so far. We have to get one over the Chiefs and we have the confidence we can."All Black Retallick remains out with a wrist injury but coach Leon MacDonald expects others to step into the breach for the visitors."He was a big player in the game last time," MacDonald said. "He had a massive influence. He probably gave his team the recipe they were looking for – the niggle at the breakdown and the relentless pressure. I'm sure someone else will pick up that baton. We're expecting three or four Retallick-like performances from their tight five."They enjoy playing us … and we're in the same boat."MacDonald has retained Harry Plummer at first-five after the 20-year-old began brightly against the Hurricanes before leaving the field for a head injury assessment late in the first half that he did not return from."He's an impressive young man," MacDonald said of Plummer. "He's had a few setbacks and things haven't gone his way completely but in terms of sticking to his guns he's done that and he deserves another chance."Halfback Sam Nock is out for the rest of the season after having surgery on a finger he injured in the first half of that match, with Jonathan Ruru getting the nod for the No 9 jersey ahead of Augustine Pulu. All Blacks prop Karl Tu'inukuafe has been named on the reserves bench, along with loose forward Tom Robinson, who was ruled out of the Hurricanes game due to concussion. The Blues were looking for a little extra finesse after failing to capitalise on several scoring chances last weekend but had trained as well as they have all season and MacDonald felt the pieces were coming together for a complete performance."We did enough to win the game – quite clearly, I think."Blues team to play the Chiefs at Eden Park on Saturday, kick-off 7.35pm: 15. Melani Nanai, 14. Caleb Clarke, 13. TJ Faiane, 12. Ma'a Nonu, 11. Rieko Ioane, 10. Harry Plummer, 9. Jonathan Ruru, 8. Akira Ioane, 7. Blake Gibson (cc), 6. Dalton Papalii, 5. Scott Scrafton, 4. Patrick Tuipulotu (cc), 3. Ofa Tuungafasi, 2. James Parsons, 1. Alex Hodgman.Reserves: 16. Matt Moulds, 17. Lua Li, 18. Karl Tu'inukuafe, 19. Gerard Cowley-Tuioti, 20. Tom Robinson, 21. Augustine Pulu, 22. Otere Black, 23. Matt Duffie.
Blues will continue to lean on Ma'a Nonu during the injury-enforced absence of their other midfield veteran.Sonny Bill Williams will have knee surgery tomorrow and is expected to be out for up to six weeks.Coach Leon MacDonald says they're fortunate to have the depth of experience the duo bring. He says Nonu has stepped up and is thriving with the extra minutes and game time. The Blues backline is unchanged to face the Chiefs on Saturday in Super Rugby but Gerard Cowley-Tuioti, Karl Tu'inukuafe, Ofa TuungafasI and Dalton Papali'i come into the pack. The Chiefs backline is also unchanged, though co-captain Brodie Retallick and loosehead prop Angus Ta'avao return, while Taleni Seu comes in at number eight moving Tyler Ardron to lock.It is a chance for Ta'avao to reinforce his versatility value to the All Blacks selectors. With Aiden Ross out with a minor neck injury, Ta'avao will switch to the loosehead side of the scrum to face the Blues in Saturday's Super Rugby match.More known as a tighthead, Ta'avao is one of seven props named to attend the All Blacks foundation day on Monday.Chiefs assistant coach Nick White says Ta'avao is likely to get an extended run in Hamilton. He says it really helps Ta'avao being in the mix for the All Blacks later in the year.
Justin Marshall, former All Black and Sky rugby analyst joined Radio Sport Breakfast to give his take on everything rugby.Marshall expects Wallabies coach Michael Chieka will be filthy with Israel Folau, given he would have thought his behaviour was adequately dealt with last year.Marshall also thinks Ma'a Nonu is knocking on the door of the All Blacks, given the continued injury troubles of Sonny-Bill Williams.LISTEN TO THE AUDIO ABOVE

The Blues are on the brink of their third win in a row - rare territory for them - and so perhaps not surprisingly their head coach Leon MacDonald has taken a softly, softly approach in terms of his selections.Which isn't to say that's an approach the Blues will take against a Stormers team which will attempt to bash them into submission from the opening whistle at Eden Park on Saturday, just that MacDonald hasn't changed much this week.Blues wing Rieko Ioane retains his place for another week as predicted, and Ma'a Nonu stays at No12 despite the return of Sonny Bill Williams, but perhaps the most significant selections as the Blues attempt to build on their win over the Highlanders are in the front row. After making a big impact from the reserves bench at Eden Park last weekend, that's where All Blacks props Karl Tu'inukuafe and Ofa Tuungafasi will once again find themselves.Sione Mafileo and Alex Hodgman are tasked with starting the job against what is a huge Stormers pack, and Tu'inukuafe and Tuungafasi with finishing it, along with fellow big hitters Dalton Papalii and midfielder Williams. The Blues came through in the final quarter against the Highlanders – a rare achievement for a team which hadn't beaten a Kiwi rival since round one of 2016 – and it's this finishing ability that head coach Leon MacDonald wants to keep.If he and his team can turn a weakness into a strength it will improve them significantly and he said the message throughout what had been an excellent training week was about the need to improve in all areas."There are two things; who starts the best and how do we close out the game and win it at the end," MacDonald said."We saw the benefit of having a powerful bench [last week]. It's probably an area where historically we have lost a lot of games in that last 20 minutes but having that quality off the bench was a deciding factor in our win. It's hard to ignore that, especially when we rate Sione and Alex really highly as well."Not surprisingly, lock Patrick Tuipulotu, so good off the bench after half an hour last week, is starting against the Stormers, a selection made easier for the fact Josh Goodhue is out with a shoulder injury. All Black Tuipulotu, a co-captain with Blake Gibson, was at his powerful best against the Highlanders, and, after announcing a one-year contract extension with the Blues and New Zealand Rugby, is steeling himself for another big one against Springbok rival Eben Etzebeth. Papalii, who made his test debut last year, has re-signed for another three years.Ioane, who has six tries in two matches but due for an All Black rest week, was always going to start after training during the week. With fellow wings Caleb Clarke and Matt Duffie returning from injury via the Blues' second team, Ioane could miss next weekend's visit of the Waratahs.MacDonald said of Ioane: "We just felt consistency of performance was critical and he's obviously a big part of that."Otere Black starts at No10 – a nod to his sounder kicking game – with Nonu staying in the midfield along with TJ Faiane, who was excellent last week."It was a tight call, a really tough call," said MacDonald after the return of Williams from Christchurch. "I thought Sonny was one of our better players against the Sunwolves, especially with his leadership. And then Ma'a gets an opportunity and his leadership was fantastic and he put in his best performance of the year."The most pleasing thing is we're definitely not happy with where we are at," MacDonald added. "We need to keep getting better; those games are won and lost on certain games and you can't get ahead of yourself. There were times when we didn't get it right as well."The Blues team to play the Stormers at Eden Park on Saturday at 7.35pm is: 15 Melani Nanai, 14 Tanielu Tele'a, 13 TJ Faiane, 12 Ma'a Nonu, 11 Rieko Ioane, 10 Otere Black, 9 Jonathan Ruru; 8 Akira Ioane, 7 Blake Gibson, 6 Tom Robinson, 5 Gerard Cowley-Tuioti, 4 Patrick Tuipulotu, 3 Sione Mafi...
The Blues will attempt to win their first New Zealand derby since round one in 2016 without Sonny Bill Williams but the key midfielder has travelled to Christchurch to represent his Muslim faith with the blessing of his franchise.Williams' sadness at the horrific events in the city last Friday was evident in a video message he posted on a social media site later that day and it was agreed by all that Christchurch is where he should be at this time. His side play the Highlanders at Eden Park on Friday but assistant coach Tom Coventry today revealed the Blues' team management were set to approach Williams about a trip south anyway."We were going to ask Sonny whether he would like to go so we were all in agreement," Coventry said. "It was a pretty short conversation. We all know how hard he took it – it was a pretty simple decision to make."Sonny has gone down to aid and support his faith and the people he represents. It also lines up with an All Black break … it's been a torrid old couple of weeks for everyone and we'll just do what we can to put in a performance on the field, and we've trained accordingly – we've been pretty good this week.""I think it's admirable, really," Coventry said of All Black Williams' trip to Christchurch to support and raise funds following the attacks on the two mosques which have resulted in the deaths of 50 people."His faith is strong. He felt for the people of Christchurch and obviously he had a lot to do with the Crusaders over his long career – he spent a couple of years down there."We admire what he's standing for and the fact that he wants to go there and grieve and be part of the support for the region and people of New Zealand. He has our best wishes. It's a sign of Sonny having a real caring side. Rugby is important for everyone but at the end of the day it's just a game and people and our country come first."A week and a half ago, Williams led the Blues against the Sunwolves in their first win of the season and proved a key influence for a side still mourning the death of their prop Mike Tamoaieta. This time they will captained by loose forward Blake Gibson and all will be aware that the Highlanders will present a tougher assignment.Their last derby match win was a 33-31 thriller against the southerners at Eden Park in February three years ago. Since then they have lost 20 in a row, including their narrow defeat to the Crusaders at Eden Park in round one several weeks ago.The Blues will be fresh from their bye, but so too will be the Highlanders after the cancellation of last Saturday's match against the Crusaders due to the events in Christchurch the day before."It's stating the obvious but it's been a while since the Blues knocked off a New Zealand franchise so we need to be good," Coventry said."I think they [Highlanders] were a bit frustrated last week against the Hurricanes and obviously they've had a bit of a tough week as well when missing out on the Crusaders. I'm sure they'll be fresh for it but maybe have a little of anxiety about losing a week."First-five Harry Plummer retains his place, with Ma'a Nonu replacing Williams at second-five. Alex Hodgman returns from injury to start at tighthead prop, and with Ofa Tuungafasi, Karl Tu'inukuafe, Patrick Tuipulotu and Dalton Papalii named on the reserves bench, the Blues have an abundance of quality for the final quarter at least. And, as New Zealand attempts to come to terms with the shocking events of last week, Coventry suggested sport could play a small part in bringing communities together."I'm an ex-school phys-ed teacher so my message to kids would be to get involved in sport," he said. "Sport is a multi-cultural thing in New Zealand. If you look at the Blues, we're made up of a host of nationalities and cultures and we embrace that."Blues team to play the Highlanders at Eden Park on Friday, kick-off 7.35pm:15. Melani Nanai, 14. Tanielu Tele'a, 13. TJ Faiane, 12. Ma'a Nonu, 11. Rieko Ioane, 10. Harry Plummer...
