Now that the thrill ride of the competitive '23-'24 season is finished, we've officially entered the Show Skate season. We talk about the Stars on Ice tour in Japan, the French National Team tour, and Gold on Ice in Virginia. Plus we explore why the US lacks a SOI tour this year, and the reason these events are so important. With the 2023-2024 competition season now complete, figure skaters have entered what is lovingly referred to as “Show Season!” In this week's episode, we cover some of the tours and shows happening this spring and summer — and discuss why it's slim pickings for those of us in the United States this year. Stars on Ice Japan came directly on the heels of the World Championships — and brought all of the champions from Montreal together for audiences across the country. From a new exhibition for Kaori Sakamoto (choreographed by one of our favs, Kana Muramoto) to backflips for days from Keegan Messing to the first SOI Japan tour for newly crowned World Champs, Deanna Stellato-Dudek & Maxime Deschamps — Japan got one incredible show. We talk about all the fun we saw — and, for some fun behind the scenes glimpses, we highly recommend digging through the Instagram handles of Piper Gilles (and the main Stars on Ice feed to see some, too). Currently making their way through France is the French National team, on tour with French Ice Dance legends, Gabrielle Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron. While the lineup is stellar, its hard not to be most excited to see the performances from Kevin Aymoz — who, after taking a break from competition following the European Championships, is looking fantastic and again performing his stunning Bolero program for eager fans. Unfortunately for those in the United States, Stars on Ice will not be making its way across the country this year — so fans will need to travel to Canada if they want to catch the next leg of the show. However, on April 19th, there is a one-night-only experience coming to Leesberg, Virginia called Gold on Ice — and it is bringing a fantastic lineup. Ilia Malinin leads the all start cast that includes Madison Chock & Evan Bates, Isabeau Levito, Mexico's crowd-pleasing Donovan Carilllo, Polina Edmunds, Emily Bratti & Ian Somerville, the aforementioned Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps and Keegan Messing — and more. We hope this brings in the crowd it deserves — and that more shows like it pop up soon! Eric Cantona and Didier Deschamps. Former teammates at Olympique de Marseille and the French National Team. Cantona was always highly critical of Deschamps going as far as labeling him as a "water carrier." Deschamps was one of the best midfielders during his day and his list of accomplishments speaks for itself. Cantona remains critical so it's clear that he is in fact jealous of what Deschamps has accomplished as a player and manager.SPONSORSHIPS:Into The Net F.C. is proudly partnered with Fanatics. Elite alpine skiing is associated with a particularly high risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, including graft ruptures. Despite a considerable focus on prevention, a reduction in injury rates has not been observed since the 1980s. In conclusion, combined ACLR and LEAP were associated with a significant reduction in the rate of ACL graft rupture in elite alpine ski athletes. Those treated with isolated ACLR remain at extremely high risk of a second ACL injury. Click here to read the article.

Jacob is a former NCAA D1 switching hitting shortstop out of Kansas State University who spent the summer at the top of the batting order for the Rouen Huskies, the reigning French champions, joining them at the champions cup in the Czech Republic where Jacob and the Huskies competed again the best teams in Europe, including the top teams from Italy and the Netherlands. What makes this story even more special, is that Jacob was a bit of a gamble to bring in as an import since he had not competed since graduating in 2018. In order for teams to roll the dice on someone who hasn't competed in that long and whom they haven't ever seen play firsthand, they need to have something special within their BBJO profile. So aside from coming from a big D1 school, what was it about Jacob that caught their eye????? It was his coaching experience. Ever since graduating he had been coaching at the junior college level and the Huskies were in the market for someone to help coach at their academy. Bringing over import players who bring a coaching element has always been a theme with clubs in the low to mid leagues in Europe, or the teams at the bottom of say France or Germany, but the trend we are starting to see is that coaching is becoming more and more a part of the profile of many of our members who sign overseas with some of the top clubs or in top leagues.

Thundercling: A Super Awesome Rock Climbing Explosion Thunderpod
It stands to reason many of you have never heard of Aman Anderson. He doesn't putz around on social media. His name, as far as I can tell, appears only once on his company's website. When his name is attached to work, it's generally citing his cutting edge data and analytics research, with titles such as, "Optimizing Muscular Strength-to-Weight Ratios in Rock Climbing." As a rule, spray does not equal import. Behind the scenes, for complicated reasons he elucidates in our conversation, Aman has become one of the most important thinkers, researchers, and pioneers in our sport. Hailing originally from Florida, Aman discovered climbing as he was diving into a career as a user experience and interface designer, building on a history of health sciences and nutritional data. Finally landing in Colorado, Aman launched into new and scary territory, leaving his career behind to launch his company, Beast Fingers Climbing. Beast Fingers is many things. Aman has designed some of the most thoughtful, research-driven training tools ever to hit the climbing market. And that research, peer-reviewed and widely respected, has changed the way we in which we interact with performance, recovery, training, and the data underlying it all. Most importantly, Aman endeavored to build an ethos and culture for his company. As one of the very few black entrepreneurs in the climbing world, he wanted to construct a Beast Fingers climbing team on a foundation of diversity, inclusivity, and, let's face it, bad ass climbers. His team includes advocates and crushers like Melise Edwards, founder of MUSE Mentorship, whose "mission is to provide representation across STEM fields and to demystify pathways to higher education for underrepresented students in STEM." World champion and advocate Maureen Beck has been a part of the team from the beginning. French National Team member Mickael Mawem calls Beast Fingers home, as does Maggie Yeung and Hunter Damiani. Advocates, athletes, engineers, classical pianists, artists, leaders. As outdoor industry titans scramble to rethink their messaging and inclusivity and team diversity, they need look no further than Aman's ethos as both paragon and guiding light. In this wonderful conversation we follow Aman from Florida to Colorado, from leaving his lucrative career to working at King Soopers so he could find time to foster his burgeoning company. He educated us on the challenges and barriers a black climber and entrepreneur face in the white-dominated world of rock climbing, tribulations that previously roiled in the shadows of a sport lacking diversity and inclusivity, a sport struggling with intersectionality. We also follow him as he kicks ass across the board, from cutting-edge data research to building one of the finest teams in the land to founding a company making a difference for athletes of all levels. Shoot us your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com or find us on Instagram at @thethundercling. Thanks to Ryne Doughty, once again, for the tunes. His newest album is now available on all platforms! The second half of 2020 is here. We're all responsible. Let's flip the script and make the next six months a referendum on a culture we can no longer abide. It's long past time to fight.

UGA Swimming and Diving Head Coach and 2008 Team USA Olympic Head Coach for the Women’s Swim Team Jack Bauerle; 2-Time Olympian and UGA alum Nicolas Kintz; and his wife and alum Molly Kintz join 33N83W for a no-holds-barred and candid conversation about all things UGA swimming, past and present. Coach Bauerle is the man responsible for putting UGA swimming and diving on the international map. Due in large part to him, UGA is one of the most represented universities at the Olympics and other major world swim and dive competitions. Like turning water into wine, he molds his students into scholarly-athletes, record setting collegiate swimmers, and world-class Olympians. Nicolas Kintz is a 2-time Olympian for the French National Team and one of Coach Bauerle’s many former swimmers who helped break records for him and UGA. Nicolas and his wife Molly met at the Washington Street Tavern in Athens, GA in November 2001 following UGA’s defeat over GA Tech. Their college romance turned into marriage, and today they are raising their two young girls to be future Swim Dawgs. Coach Bauerle has under his belt 45 Top-10 teams, 7 NCAA and 12 SEC crowns with the Lady Bulldogs; SEC Coach of the Year 18 times (16 with the women, two with the men); National Women’s Coach of the Year 7 times; and 1st among active NCAA coaches, 1st all-time in the SEC, and 2nd on the all-time list for number of wins. He fosters a strong bond with all his current and former swimmers, and with his former teammates and coaches from UGA. In this episode, he takes a walk down memory lane and shares his memories from college, his days as a student-athlete, the moment he decided to become a coach, to the time when he was announced as the 2008 Team USA Olympic Head Coach for the women’s swim team. As an added bonus, he gives us the scoop on how Matt Stafford, former UGA and current Detroit Lions QB, came to know UGA, and who to start following on social media from the current UGA Swimming & Diving Team (because they’re that good and we may see them at the 2020 Olympics)!

After competing for the French National Team at the Sydney Olympics, Myriam retired from Synchronized Swimming to attend business school. She worked for Accorhotels in marketing and sponsorship in France, Thailand, and Australia and eventually resumed her sporting career to compete for the Australian National Team in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Following her second retirement, Myriam combined her business and sports knowledge to return to sport and worked in high performance and sport management in England and in the U.S for several years before founded Athletes Soul. Where are you from? I was born in Lyon, France. I have an older step-brother who lived with us when I was little and then it was just me, my parents and my cat. When and how did you start synchronized swimming? I grew up in a family of skiers. We spent a lot of time in the mountains in winter and summer. So there was no background in swimming in my family but I always loved the water. I saw Muriel Hermine (a famous French synchronized swimmer) on TV and knew this is what I wanted to do. It took me about a year to convince my mum to look into it. I was six when she finally registered me with the local club. Can you give us a summary of your career? I had abilities for the sport and pretty quickly I started training five days per week. We lived pretty far from the pool and, in middle school, it would take me 1.5 hours to get to practice from school. I would take the regional bus, then the city bus, the subway and another bus. But I had all my friends at swimming and I loved it so I never thought of it as difficult. I would use the travel time to do my homework. I competed in age group national championships from 10 years old on. I won my first national championships at 12 and participated in youth national team every year after that. At 15, I moved to the National Training Center in Paris to train for the Junior World Championships. After that, I made the senior national team and participated in many international competitions: winning the silver and bronze medals in European championships and cups, placing in top five at world championships and cups, and fourth at the 2000 Olympic Games. I was promoted to the duet after Sydney and competed for another two years with the French Team. I retired at the end of 2002 and then went to business school. I returned to the sport at the end of 2005 and competed in the Beijing Olympics for Australia in 2008, placing seventh. Learn more about Myriam here https://www.linkedin.com/in/myriam-glez-8682422/

Join Christy Demetrakis and her special guest Author and Tri-Athlete, Gregory Berge for "Don't Change the Dream. Change the Plan," Tuesday, August 18th at 6:30pm EST. About Gregory Berge: THEY SAY THAT GREAT ATHLETES NEVER GIVE UP. BUT FOR GREGORY, GIVING UP HIS MEDICAL CAREER MARKED THE BEGINNING OF HIS ATHLETIC DREAMS. Born in 1978, Gregory grew up dreaming to become a professional sportsman. 21 years later, he stopped growing and also stopped dreaming because he’s having his 3rd ACL surgery in 4 years. That’s how he decides to devote his energy to school and enroll in a 6 year osteopathic course in Marseille, France. Ten years later in Japan, he becomes the first foreign osteopath ever registered in Japan. Between 2011 and 2013, he works as an English teacher, as a dish-washer in a restaurant, as a cook in a Japanese restaurant, in a Mc Donald’s, as a janitor, a translator and finally discovers interpreting. Gregory’s behaviour, energy and stress level are at the exact opposite of what he experienced as an osteopath. He writes his first book “How to find your soul job”. On September 4th of 2013, the International Olympic Committee announces Tokyo as the host of the 2020 Olympic games. Gregory sees this as the sign that it's time to give one more chance to his childhood dream. This is how he starts triathlon with the 2020 Olympic games as his only goal. In 2014, he finishes 25th at the Nationals. In 2015, he is selected in the age-group French National team. The dream is alive.
