There are some indelible scenes inscribed forever into the psyche of the West, and the death of Dido is one of them. When William Congreve wrote that "Heav'n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn'd, Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn'd," he surely had in mind this archetype of all scorned women, the tragic heroine who stands in for every abandoned lover and for an entire civilization. Aeneas--and Rome--must leave her ruthlessly in the dust. But no one knows how to guilt trip you like your ex, and no one knows how to remonstrate with Rome like Carthage. All the same, in the end...destiny awaits. Jim and Goodey unpack a massive weekend of rugby, starting with Quins pulling off their first away win over Saracens in 13 years at The Showdown in front of 54,000 fans — and with a few famous faces in the crowd too. Jim spills the beans on the London craic and post-match scenes, while the lads debate what went right for Quins and wrong for Sarries. There's more drama in the Prem as Leicester smash Saints, Bath flex against Glos, and Bristol and Exeter set a new record with ten first-half tries. We also head stateside for a cracking chat with Peter Bernick, co-owner of the Chicago Hounds, who lifts the lid on building rugby in the US, the upcoming United States of Rugby doc, and how MLR is gearing up for RWC 2031. Plus, the Bulls break Leinster's unbeaten URC streak, Fin Smith to Toulouse rumours, and the lads react to a rabbit punch and a big shout to Rassie's new pod — all that and more. Entrepreneur Arron Banks shot to prominence during and after the UK's 2016 Brexit Referendum, where financial support for ‘Leave' made him the country's largest-ever political donor. Later that year, Banks and political ally Nigel Farage were Donald Trump's first foreign visitors after the returned US President's first shock victory. In this fascinating interview with BizNews editor Alec Hogg, Banks explains why South Africa is key in the Trump Administration's strategy to address global political imbalances, cautioning about likely consequences from the ANC's doubling down in its tug of the Eagle's tail feathers. He also shares his SA connections; the spectacular growth of Farage's Reform Party (now leading UK polls); and a long-running R150m fraud case against the South African miner who hosted Ramaphosa at the RWC. Banks will speak about Trump and SA at BNC#7.

When we talk about the greatest rugby family in this country ever, it's almost impossible to go past the Barretts. Kevin 'Smylie' Barrett was a Taranaki legend who also played for the Hurricanes, Beauden is a 100 game All Black, RWC winner and 2 x World Player of the year, Scott has captained the Crusaders to 4 Super Rugby titles and is the current Captain of the All Blacks, Jordie at just 27 has racked up over 50 games for the All Blacks and dominated where ever he plays. Kane was tracking the same path before 2 significant head injuries forced him to retire at just 22 years old. It was awesome to sit down with Kane and talk through where he is at now and how he looks back on his career, some bits that stood out for me were.. The battle between the Barrett brothers to be the Alpha growing up How Kane would fire up the Francis Douglas 1st XV side, once resulting in a yellow card The time Kane picked up his coach Neil Barns as a 16yo and dropped him on his head His pathway into NZ Schools for 2 years, Taranaki and the Blues What forced Kane into retirement and how hard that was to deal with How he looks at his brothers successful careers His new life of the farm And heaps more! This was such an incredible insight from such a champion lad, you can only admire the way Kane has gone about his life post footy and it was so cool to hear about his journey.
Aaron Mauger loves rugby, he's so passionate about the game and he is so grateful for his involvement in the game and he's certainly been involved! From playing for Canterbury straight out of school, to becoming a Crusader and All Black not long after. He then moved to Leicester were he won premierships over there, before injuries forced him to retire at just 30. Post playing he was always going to stay in the game and with his incredible rugby knowledge has gone on to become a great coach! Some bit's that stood out for me were... His relationship with his brother Nathan and their mindset playing together How hard it can be for a young 10 to come in boss the team around especially when one was your teacher the year before The massive influence Andrew Mertens had on him The night of the 96-12 win over the Waratahs and the story behind the front flip The 2003 and 2007 RWC experiences The struggle of wanting to keep playing when the body is breaking down The reality of the life as a coach and the impact that can have on your family And heaps more I loved hearing about Azza's mindset on how he approaches life, he's very grateful for every thing and he has a real passion for the game of rugby. It made me realise how good this game is, so many great people involved in the game and Aaron Mauger is certianly one of those.

This week I am joined by Japanese royalty Lomano Lemek! The Japanese rugby legend who has been to the Olympics with the Japanese 7s side who finished 4th, He's been to 2 RWC's and has recently signed with Honda Heat again to take him through to 19 years playing professionally in Japan. From a young age Mano wanted to be a professional rugby player and being in the 1st XV at the age of just 14 made that a really realistic dream. However, after that season he failed to make any rep teams which really tested his commitment and perseverance of that dream a pretty random opportunity came up for him to play in Japan with the Canon Eagles. Some parts that stood out for me in this one were… The exciting launch of his new App P2P to help players and teams make contracting easier We hear about his humble upbringing and his early focus to make rugby a career How a random opportunity at the Canon Eagles at 19 years old changed his life His decision to play Japan 7's and experience the first Olympics with 7s involved How he found his time at the Sunwolves and playing Super Rugby Experiencing 2 RWC and the different challenges that were involved leading up to those tournaments Some classic Jamie Joesph yarn Plenty of stories from his Top league career And he's more! As you'll hear Lemano has had some career and deserves every single yen he has earns and he is a massive lad who gives an awesome insight into rugby in Japan. Tamaiti Williams is one of the most exciting talents in the game, he's a whopping 196cm (6ft4) and 140kg (308lbs) with the speed and light feet of an outside back. He's got the skillset of a playmaker and most importantly for his position he's a beast at scrum time comfortably playing both sides of the scrum. All this at just 23 years of age! The potential of this champion lad is huge and it was awesome to go through his journey up until now. Some key bits that stood out for me... The emotional rollercoaster the last 12months has been, going to a RWC, getting injured, getting married, having a baby at just 27 weeks, becoming an All Black again. That's an episode in itself. Hearing about Tamaiti's upbringing in Perth where he had to grow up fast. The plan that his parents had to help him achieve success in rugby, which involved moving back to NZ and then down to the Crusaders academy The challenges that came with those moves - Becoming a Crusader and then becoming and All Black and what that meant to him and his family. We hear all about the RWC in France including that last scrum. Plans in the future, all your questions and more. Tamaiti is such a humble giant, who speaks openly about the challenges he has faced and will continue to face to reach his potential. There's so much good stuff in this one and as you'll hear he is such a lad. If you enjoy this episode I would hugely appreciate it if you could give it a share so I can continue to bring you great guests like this. Cam Roigard is one of the most exciting talents in the game right now. In the last couple of years he has made every post a winner, rapidly climbing through the ranks after starring for Counties Manakau, carving up Super Rugby with the Hurricanes before heading of to the RWC with the All Blacks. It was here on the world stage where we all got to see the huge talent that this young man possesses and has got plenty excited about where he can get to. The beauty of this story is that Cam wasn't the star growing up. He didn't make the rep teams and at just 17 years old he was told that he had peaked. His incredible work ethic combined with his love for the game and competitive nature meant he did everything he could to achieve his dream and did he what! As you'll hear Cam is a champion lad, someone who just loves the game and wants to push himself as far as he can and it's exciting to think where he could potentially end up. Having started in Christchurch with Canterbury and the Crusaders, Johnny then spent 8 seasons over in Wales with the Scarletts as well as playing international rugby for Wales. Will Jordan is one of those rugby players who is just a joy to watch. He's fast, he's got all the skills and of course he scores plenty of tries. His strike rate speaks for itself, having scored 31 tries in 31 games for the All Blacks at international level and he's quickly approaching 100 if to add on his Tasman Mako and Crusader ones as well. However as we always hear on these episodes, the rugby professional rugby career is not just all good fun and scoring tries there are always ups and downs to go through with Will himself having had a tough run of late. Last year he suffered an unusual injury which had no time frame and left him struggling in a race against the clock to get back in time for the RWC. This year before the season has even started he's had to go under the knife on his shoulder which has ruled him out for the Super Rugby season. It was awesome to chat to Will about how he has handled some of these harder points in his career, as well as all the incredible things he has done recently including a very strong Rugby World Cup. As you'll hear, Will is one of the easiest guys to have a conversation with, he has a great mind for the game and is just an all round champion lad!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Two teams folded (for now). One team packed up and relocated to the sunny hills of L.A. Another new team in the Queen City with a focus on young American MLR minutes. After Glendale came and went, followed by Gilly-Gate, did anyone actually think the MLR Front Office timeline could get any wackier? Yet here we are. Year 7 loading and the shield has never looked shinier. With World Rugby's decision to financially back Anthem Rugby Carolinas, we've been tapped as the rugby union of the future (fingers crossed it will all work out). Will the 2031 RWC be a smashing success, or will gigantic stadiums be left under attended? We've got seven more years to get it as supercharged as we can before we host the pinnacle event. With seven years in, and seven to go ... how will MLR shake out in a pivotal year? The men's Eagles have to begin a winning form heading into future RWC Qualifiers. The only way to do that is to have a thriving domestic comp to select the best players from. As of now, all teams have enough talent to win games. Charlotte, Miami and LA may have a learning curve being fresh-out-the-box franchises, but there's no doubt all three clubs will win big games throughout the season. So the ultimate question is ... who will rise up and hoist the shield come August 3rd at Snap Dragon Stadium in San Diego? Can New England repeat and defend their crown? Can the Legion return to the final and win in front of a home crowd? Will Seattle become the first franchise to win three titles ... (and does that count as a dynasty?) Depth is always a factor leading into playoffs ... Who is healthy at the right time? With 16 game regular season, followed up with 3 rounds of knock out rugby, which squads will have the player depth to see it through? The regular season ends June 29th, and the PLAYOFFS?! begin THREE WHOLE WEEKS LATER. Yes, this is to accommodate the summer test rugby window .... but we've never seen a break like this in any major sports league heading into the knockout rounds. Will this elongated break allow teams to get healthier, and will that result in more appealing QF matchups? Or will the fans' summer attentions spans dwindle and result in poor attendances? Knowing the average temps throughout the US in late July, we don't need Paris Hilton to tell us "That's Hot". We know the hardcore fans will ride and die in blistering temps for a home knockout game, but will the casuals fans show up? After all, if we want to fill our stadiums come RWC 2031, it's the Casuals that we need to be winning over. With a balanced 12 team league, the fans will be happy to absorb all the rugby we can each week. Six games a weekend ain't bad. Maybe shedding wavering investors like snake skin will be good for the league in the long-term. Until 2031 arrives, we'll still be holding our breath every off-season when the capital calls are due. In the meantime, the show goes on... PICKEM!
On this episode of Engage, Captain Ian Turner of the Scheduling Committee and Captain Rich Wheeler, Chairman of the Negotiating Committee, are back again to discuss new contract implementation items that started in January 2024 beyond pay rate and 401(k) DC contribution increases. The group discusses new items such as improved sit pay provisions and increase to training pay for CQ and Recency type events, training golden days, new theater qualification provisions that provide pilots more flexibility, along with a completely new feature for pilots bidding reserve called “Reserve with Conflict” – a unique enhancement for Reserve pilots. Rich and Ian explain how pilots may want to use this new voluntary feature, RWC, to their advantage. They also discuss contract interpretation issues and clarify how ALPA and the Company are working to resolve these issues. Now and then we like to share with you a podcast we enjoy. This week it's an absolute ripper. "What a Lad" is a podcast by James Marshall who talks to some of rugby's biggest names and best lads on the planet. From James Not many thought I would be able to rope in the humble All Black legend Joe Moody on to What a Lad but here he is. In his first ever podcast, the great loose head prop (and a bit of tight head) shares his journey through his raw and honest nature that he approaches his life with. Some of the highlights of this episode were... Hearing how Joe grew up with 3 older sisters doing the odd dress up, How he dominated for his country at wrestling up until the age of 21, Why he moved to prop and how hard that transition was. Breaking his leg the day before flying out to become an All Black on the end of year tour. How close he was turning down going to the 2015 RWC. How hard missing out on the 2023 RWC was on him. And heaps more, including some great questions from you guys! As you'll hear, Joe Moody is a great lad, who shares his journey exactly how it is. True legend of the game and hopefully there's a few more years left in him here!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What makes a great winger? Is it the ability to beat the best defenses? The slight of foot, and dashing balance as they navigate through a trove of stout defenders? What about a lethal step, or an unimaginable field vision? Uncle Johnny was in studio to flesh out who Le Shane Williams 'Tiny Dancer' of Le Tournament is for this dazzling affair in France the past few weeks. While many names come straight into mind (.... think RWC 2019 final when Owen Farrell got spun around like a ballerina) ... John has his list of names both old and new who were in contention for the prestigious Rugby PickEm Award. Could it be Mack "The Knife" Hansen, Sir Darcy Graham (straight out of a Jane Austen novel), or a rather new name on the winger circuit ... the Portuguese Raffeale Storti (aka Storti the Shorty) ??? All that and more on a rather wild and crazy Rugby PickEm. Enjoy. PICKEM!
