High-end hunting optics have changed a lot in the last decade. Better glass is part of the story, but the real shift is happening in how optics connect with the rest of your hunting system. In this episode, I sit down with Ryan Holm from Leica to break down where optics technology is today and how hunters can actually use these tools to become more effective in the field. Ryan brings a unique perspective as both a hunter and someone who has spent his career around high-performance gear. We dive into what separates top-tier optics companies, why glass quality matters for low-light performance, and how modern optics are starting to integrate with things like ballistic solvers, weather meters, and mapping apps. This conversation is more about understanding what these tools can do and how hunters can take advantage of them than anything. We also talk through practical optics setups for different styles of hunting, from archery elk hunts in tight country to long-range rifle hunts for mule deer in big open terrain. Ryan also shares some simple but often overlooked tips that can dramatically improve your ability to get accurate ranges in the field. Stabilizing your rangefinder, using tripods, understanding beam divergence settings, and properly calibrating the compass in modern rangefinding binoculars can make the difference between a confident shot and bad data. If you've ever struggled to get a clean range in brush, timber, or broken terrain, this episode will help you understand why and how to fix it. If you want to become a better hunter behind the glass and get more reliable information before the shot, this conversation is worth your time. Shotgun Spratling and Kasey Kazliner return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to break down another unblemished weekend for USC baseball as they improve to 15-0 on the season after opening the Big Ten season with a sweep of Illinois! They also talk with junior left-handed pitcher Sax Matson about the expansion of his role and the team's hot start to the season. Matson discusses the development of his arsenal during his time at USC, including the addition of a cutter this season to a fastball that's climbed five miles per hour since his freshman year and a breaking ball that has devastated hitters this year. He also chats about Sean Allen's coaching and the mentality he takes to the mound where he hopes to visit at least 40 times this season to tie the program appearances record. Matson again played a critical part in the Trojans' pitching efforts that were again electric as Mason Edwards and Grant Govel helped USC throw back-to-back 4-0 shutouts with the staff allowing only three runs over the weekend. USC fell behind early Sunday, but rallied back to take a 5-3 win to bookend the week with two-run victories after also rallying to defeat UC Irvine, 6-4, during a midweek matchup. Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action and look forward to the upcoming double midweek matchups and the Trojans' first road trip out of Southern California this weekend when they travel to Nortwestern. This week we go full mule deer nerd mode on the Rokcast. We brought together a room full of big buck hunters with Travis Hobbs, Corey Dixon, Braxton Hamilton, and Robby Denning to talk buck age versus score based on the deer they've had aged. These aren't guesses. Not “he looked mature on the hoof” conversations. Everyone lab-aged their deer and the guys dive into that data from over 70 bucks, including 15 that grossed 200 inches or better. What we found might surprise you. Most of the biggest deer weren't ancient. They were five- and six-year-old bucks. Some giants were only three. And some grandpa bucks at seven- and eight-years-old barely cracked the 160s. We dive into what tooth aging has taught us about judging bucks on the hoof, the myth of regression, how hard winters really affect antler growth, and why security matters more than limited tags. If you care about big mule deer, management, or just want to know how old your buck really was and some tips to find out, this one's for you.

In this conversation, Mark explains that "we often build our lives on things we are certain about that simply are not true." He describes how "we don't actually see the world… we see screens of how we think the world is." He explains that these screens create "a double paradox" shaping what we think is safe, what we think is risky, and how we choose to act. Mark describes the difference between someone who sees a large employer as stability versus an entrepreneur who sees it as danger, saying "which screen is right? Well, it depends on which screen is going to give you more power in life." He talks about choosing the entrepreneurial screen because "I detested the idea of being a piece of a cog in a major machine." He explains how a "victim type screen" once took over his thinking when he was diagnosed with osteonecrosis: "I was catastrophizing… I went into a very negative spiral." He recalls seeing children receiving chemotherapy and realizing "Mark, you are really self-absorbed… You don't get to live a life without pain and challenge." That shift, "Why me?" to "Why not me?", transformed everything for him. Mark also talks about the mindset required to reinvent yourself: "No matter what I succeeded in in the past entitles me to win in the future." He shares that he must "redo it every three years or reimagine it and transform it," because "if I'm not transforming my business, other people are going to be working to transform my business out of it." He discusses fear and avoidance: "You can be afraid of having the conversation… but what you cannot do is ignore it." He explains how ignoring problems is the beginning of decline. Mark then explores how his business model evolved when he realized that people with millions of dollars were still "miserable, always afraid… always complaining" while others with far less were happy. This led him to see that money alone is not the source of well-being. He dismantles the three ideas he was taught early in his career: "stock picking," "market timing," and "track record investing", calling them "completely bankrupt." He explains that "the market is very efficient, very random," and that "stock picking, market timing and track record investing didn't work." Mark describes how identity and mission changed for him over time, how screens shape action, and how transformation requires confronting fear, discarding false certainty, and letting go of entitlement. He closes by saying he hopes never to retire because "stopping is one of the worst things you can do for your future." He explains that purpose, planning, and creating are what allow people to thrive. In this episode of Restitch America, host Alma Ohene-Opare talks with Anna Matson about the themes of Alma's essay “United in What Matters.” Together they explore how Americans can reclaim shared ground by focusing on core values — dignity, faith, family, and civic responsibility — instead of letting minor doctrinal or political differences drive us apart.Anna and Alma discuss how tribalism and purity tests fracture communities, why we too often define each other by disagreement rather than common convictions, and practical ways to rebuild trust across divides. They emphasize that unity does not require uniformity: instead, it asks us to locate the deep moral terrain we already share and act from it.The conversation also pauses to reflect on the recent Grand Blanc, Michigan attack on an LDS church — a tragic reminder of how quickly social bonds can be shattered and why compassionate solidarity matters now more than ever. Alma and Anna call listeners to mourn together, resist moral distancing, and recommit to protecting the sacred spaces and values that bind communities. If you're craving honest dialogue, value-driven conversation, and a hopeful roadmap for rebuilding trust in America, this episode is for you.Watch now on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts. Mark Matson is the bestselling author of Experiencing the American Dream: How to Invest Your Time, Energy, and Money to Create an Extraordinary Life, and founder of Matson Money, a firm managing over $12 billion in assets. Known for making Nobel Prize–winning investment science accessible to everyday families, Mark has spent decades teaching people how to invest prudently, avoid speculation, and build wealth that serves a greater purpose. On this episode we talk about: Why most financial advice is based on false promises of predicting the market The dangers of stock picking, market timing, and chasing performance How modern portfolio theory and academic research can guide smart investing Practical asset allocation and the discipline of rebalancing Why having a purpose for your money matters more than money itself Top 3 Takeaways The market can't be reliably predicted—success comes from disciplined asset allocation and rebalancing, not gambling. Emotional decisions in down markets often lock in losses; sticking to your plan yields far greater long-term returns. Money alone won't make you happy—invest with purpose, aligning your finances to your values and life goals. Notable Quotes “All the knowable information about the future is already in the stock price today.” “Leave your money in the market and rebalance—don't pull it out during downturns.” “Money for money's sake never works; it has to serve a purpose greater than itself.” Connect with Mark Matson: Website: MatsonMoney.com Instagram: @MarkMatson1 ✖️✖️✖️✖️
North Carolina's 9-1 start is simply not surprising. Well, maybe it is for someone that seeks perfection and has accomplished such a feat with regularity. But opportunities for growth as a team, as a program occur daily, be it in practice or on the field during a draining double overtime loss to an ACC opponent. Erin Matson's 2025 UNC Field Hockey team is deep, talented and loaded with both youth and veterans and built for the long grind. With a rare opening in the season's schedule, she sat down with Inside Carolina's Tommy Ashley in The Purple Bowl to talk year three, success, that Wake loss and her continued vision for a dominant program. The Inside Carolina Podcast network features a wide range of current UNC sports topics, from game previews and instant postgame analysis, to recruiting breakdowns. Elite college athletic programs on the campus of North Carolina are plentiful and, to paraphrase legendary Dean Smith, Carolina is a women's sport school. Field Hockey in Chapel Hill is as good as it gets and, under head coach Erin Matson, the Tar Heels look to continue the run started by Karen Shelton decades ago. Heading into year three, Matson's team, while returning experience and star power, will add in new faces in key roles as the goals and standards stay the same. Matson discusses this team and her path with Inside Carolina's Tommy Ashley and Grace Nugent. Ever wonder how a white supremacist becomes an extremist? Sharon has a conversation with Matson and Tawni Browning about their book, The Hate Next Door. Matt gets candid about his time working undercover in white supremacist groups and what it was like to balance his dueling realities: where the job ended and where his home life began. Matt and Tawni also talk about the type of person white supremacist hate groups target for recruitment and the types of messaging they rely on to spread their violent ideologies.
