In October 2020, a series of brutal murders shocked the Midlands and sparked one of the region's largest manhunts. When Julie Williams reported her son David missing, she could not have known she would become one of Anthony Russell's victims. Within days, Julie and David were dead, and Russell was on the run.As police closed in, he continued a violent trail of robbery, assault and murder across Coventry, Kenilworth and Leamington Spa. His final victim was Nicole McGregor, a 31 year old woman who was eighteen weeks pregnant when she was raped and killed. In this episode of Blood Ties,Geoffrey and Molly Wansell examine the life and crimes of Anthony Russell, the devastating impact on the families left behind, and the police investigation that brought one of Britain's most dangerous killers to justice.CREDITS: Presenters: Geoffrey and Molly WansellProducer: Peter Shevlin https://pod60.com/Artwork: George LeighMusic: Dan WansellCONTACT: Twitter: @BloodTies_PodInstagram:@bloodtiespodcastEmail: bloodties.podcast@gmail.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@bloodtiespodcastSupport: patreon.com/bloodtiespodcastPlease complete our survey if you have time: http://bit.ly/bloodtiespodcast-survey Hosted on Acast. How on earth did you find a place like that?M: I just found it online. W:Great.Text 10M:Hello, I'm Jeff Anderson from Coventry, England. And in today's program, I'd like to share with you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During the football season, whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and Newcastle are hung outside every window or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark packed pubs, staring at television screens. Of course, they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a goal or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the excitement, as far as victories are concerned.England had its big moment in 1966 in Wimbledon Stadium. The World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match, red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope — the English flag. While football has never been something I'm particularly interested in. For years, I've had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You cannot say you don't like or do not follow football in England, as often this will lead to a long dialogue in which someone will begin telling you why you should support their team.
The World Cup has finally started and it was a very lively opener as Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in a game with three red cards. Gary, Alan and Micah are joined live in their Times Square studio by Frank Lampard and Joe Cole to look at the game and get the pair's thoughts on who Thomas Tuchel should select for England's game against Croatia There's also a look at the challenge ahead for Lampard as he tries to keep Coventry up next season and the ex-Chelsea duo give us their take on Jose Mourinho returning to Real Madrid Learn more about your ad choices. We are back on our journey through the 80s and 90s as we start our series on 1986/87. The second half of the eighties was arguably the greatest run of FA Cup Finals and this season's may sit above them all. From the fourth round victory at Old Trafford, Coventry City's joint managerial team of John Sillett and George Curtis were adamant that this could be their year. Standing in the Wembley Way would be a Spurs side whose treble dreams had faded but who still had the opportunity to send Glenn Hoddle off in style. Author Richard Chamberlain joins us to discuss the most famous season in Coventry's history as well as some other great FA Cup stories along the way. Suddenly the world record conversation has two names in it. We discuss Werro's emergence and potential, the tactical error that may have cost Hodgkinson slightly, and what this means for the possibilities that the oldest world record in the sport falls this yearWhere does Femke Bol fit into all this? The Dutch 400m hurdles star changed events in search of new challenges, but the event is evolving so fast that the challenge looks significantly greater and she's not even raced outdoors yet! We discuss whether her 400 meter speed is a genuine weapon or whether the 400-800 double is as rare as it is for good reasonCooper Lutkenhaus is the most exciting teenager in track and field, already a world indoor champion, and now a Diamond League winner. We talk about his pedigree and potential, with Gareth nothing a multi-sport background that augurs well for his longevity. Challenges and 'road bumps' await, but he has a ceiling that may lie beyond the current world recordKirsty Coventry said she doesn't believe in paying Olympic athletes, and it has not landed well. Global Athlete has responded with a proposal for interim payments and a breakdown of the IOC's finances that is staggering. The IOC is sitting on nearly five billion dollars in reserves, and Global Athlete are asking for eight percent of the Paris broadcasting revenue. We ponder why Coventry made that statement knowing it would invite significant blowback, and what it reveals about the pressure she is under from inside the IOC. We also speculate on whether there are any good reasons to avoid paying Olympic athletesAnna van der Breggen lost the women's Giro on the final day from the pink jersey, her second Grand Tour lead lost this year. Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, knows there's no such thing as a free lunch. And the best way to keep the people on your side is through their stomachs. It's a lesson King Edward IV has yet to learn. After marrying for love, and starting a diplomatic thaw with Europe, Edward soon finds out that there's really only one task that matters: keeping his most powerful subject loyal. So the young king allows a raid on a Hanseatic League storehouse on Warwick's behalf, he moves his entire court to Coventry just to coax Warwick to a council meeting, and then stages a grand ceremony at Windsor Castle to project unity. None of it works. Warwick takes every gift and offers nothing in return. Generosity can be its own kind of trap door. The question is whether the king will recognise it before he's swallowed whole… – As always, Dan's royal favourites can chime in anytime on the royal court on Patreon at patreon.com/thisishistory. And don't forget to listen to this season's accompanying bonus episodes for this miniseries, where Dan and Producer Al trace how the Earl of Warwick was able to attain power that rivalled that of the king's. Plus, Dan gets stuck into how the restive Northern counties provides Warwick with a vulnerability to exploit. – A Sony Music Entertainment production. At age 13, Velma Murray began to struggle at school, and her mother, Clarissa, decided to send the teen to lodge with a family friend in Coventry. Velma settled in and over the next two years got on well in her new school. Then in April 1973, just as the now 15-year-old Velma was about to sit CSE exams, her life was tragically taken in the most horrific and cowardly manner. At one point, 150 police officers were working the case, but within a few months the investigation stagnated, and Velma's name soon disappeared from the pages of local newspapers. Five decades on, the motive for Velma's murder is still a mystery. Send us Fan MailBack from his travels and biking to work in Coventry, Simon clocks two encounters with men radiating pure confrontational energy – and wonders aloud what it must cost to move through the world that way. Lo son por su forma de manejar las influencias del country, el soul, el folk y las músicas tradicionales con un enfoque contemporáneo. Lo son por su calidad como instrumentistas y la calidez de sus juegos de voces. Amazon's UK boss has called for work experience to be made mandatory for everyone aged sixteen and over, describing it as "the most transformative thing" he has seen for young people entering the workforce. John Boumphrey argues that the education system is not producing work-ready school leavers and that the blame should fall on the system rather than on young people themselves. The cost of living crisis and its effect on retail pricing is a constant theme. Just this week the govenment called on supermarkets to cap the price of some goods to help consumers. Boumphrey - who is the UK Country Manager - sets out how Amazon aims to match the lowest price among national competitors and resists the suggestion that government intervention could do a better job than competitive markets. He acknowledges the impact of National Insurance increases and global disruption, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, on business costs, while insisting these have not yet fed through to customer prices.Amazon's record as a supplier is challenged directly. The Groceries Code Adjudicator ranks Amazon worst among retailers for supplier complaints, and Boumphrey, UK country manager at Amazon, accepts the company has "a lot more to do," particularly around delayed payments in its grocery division. He points to recent changes including named contacts for every grocery supplier.A pilot drone delivery service in Darlington, the first outside the United States, is delivering products within two hours. Boumphrey suggests the service will initially suit rural and remote areas rather than city centres, and expects the timescale to shorten towards thirty-minute delivery. The conversation addresses the near-miss union recognition vote at Amazon's Coventry warehouse, where the result fell just short of the threshold. Boumphrey says he personally values the existence of unions but prefers direct engagement with employees, adding that if workers choose union recognition, the company will comply.Amazon's UK tax contribution of more than five point eight billion pounds is set out, though Boumphrey resists calls to publish a standalone corporation tax figure, citing the volatility of that number during periods of heavy investment. He also addresses illegal streaming on Fire Stick devices, confirming that sideloading has been restricted on newer products and that Amazon is working with a global anti-piracy coalition. And could Ai soon be ordering your shopping for you? Amazon is piloting a service in the United States called Buy For Me, where an AI agent can purchase products on a customer's behalf — buying items automatically when they hit a specified price, without the customer needing to place the order themselves. Boumphrey confirms there are no immediate plans to bring it to the UK but describes it as part of a broader shift in how retail is evolving. Boumphrey acknowledges the responsibility that comes with holding a customer's payment details and acting on their behalf, but stresses that the customer remains in control at every stage.Presenter: Sean Farrington Producer: Olie D'Albertanson Editor: Henry Jones03:44 Cost of living & pricing 05:00 Government & price intervention 15:15 Supplier complaints & Groceries Code 21:48 AI, Alexa Plus & agentic shopping 25:53 Drone delivery in Darlington 29:40 Robots, automation & the jobs market 31:28 Mandatory work experience & skills crisis 37:08 Union recognition & Coventry vote 42:46 Tax transparency 45:48 Fire Stick piracy

Send us Fan MailSimon is recording from Sassari, where the barn doors have just gone in and the pace of life feels unrecognisably slow. A conversation about loitering with intent – a legal phrase that turns out to be untranslatable into Portuguese – opens into a wide-ranging examination of third spaces, billionaires, and the frictionlessness of modern commerce: what the UK has lost, and why. Kirk Miller spent five years as a plumber who hated every day of it.He was in shape. He had the body. He looked like he had it together. Internally, he was miserable. In 2010, he won the Men's Health cover model competition and used that moment as the proof he needed to jump. He quit with five hours of personal training booked, no car, and a borrowed work van to get around Coventry. As long as he could pay his bills, eat, and keep a roof over his head, he was going.Twenty years later, Kirk runs Built To Last, a six-pillar performance coaching system used by founders, CEOs, and high-net-worth entrepreneurs who want to stop treating their health as an afterthought and start building it as a competitive advantage. In this episode of Screw It Just DO It, Kirk and Alex unpack why the systems that worked in your twenties will not carry you through building a business, why willpower is not a strategy, and what two decades of coaching high performers has taught Kirk about the real cost of founders ignoring their health.Key Takeaways:- Why most founders are using outdated health systems built for a life they no longer live- The three non-negotiables to schedule every week before anything else- Why your state drives your decisions and what that costs you in business- The difference between emotional confidence and the confidence tied to your bank balance- What the most emotionally content and consistently wealthy entrepreneurs Kirk coaches all have in common

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode head back to class to learn how teachers have been depicted on screen, from Goodbye, Mr Chips to Adolescence. What can film and television teach us, if anything, about what it takes to be a good teacher? Mark speaks to east London-based teacher and film critic Charlotte Harrison about the enduring appeal of inspirational mentor figures in cinema, from Sidney Poitier in To Sir, with Love to Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, and how far these stories reflect - or distort - the realities of life in the classroom. She also highlights the films and TV series that come closest to capturing the day-to-day experience of teaching.Ellen talks to Guz Khan, star of Man Like Mobeen, who first honed his crowd-control skills in a Coventry classroom before turning to stand-up comedy and acting, about how screen depictions compare with his own experience as a teacher. She also speaks to British television legend Sir Philip Redmond about Grange Hill, the groundbreaking, long-running school drama he created in 1978, whose characters - from Mr Bronson to Mrs McClusky - became as familiar to generations of British pupils as their real-life teachers.Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4.
Send us Fan MailHi everybody and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Before we get started with today's episode, I just want to remind everyone that if you enjoy the podcast, you can show your support by leaving a rating and review of it wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit www.buymeacoffee.com/attendancebias and donate anything you can to keep the podcast going. Now, onto today's episode:Today's guest, Shoheen Owhady, is the keyboard player for Uncle Ebeneezer, a Phish cover band based out of New Jersey, AND the keyboard player for The Dude of Life Band. And it just so happens that today's show we discussed: July 3, 1995 at Sugarbush Mountain in Vermont, is Page's show. Between Strange Design, Loving Cup, A Day in the Life, and monster solos in The Squirming Coil, Possum, and David Bowie, this is one that anyone interested in Phish keyboards should pay extra close attention. Then, just as important as the music, is the context. On Attendance Bias, we talk about different eras and milestones that certain shows represent. There's a pretty strong argument that this show on the mountain was the end of an era. It was the last show the band would play before the death of Jerry Garcia, and we all know how that would affect the Phish scene started just a few months later in the fall of 1995. It was also the last Phish show to be played in their home state of Vermont until 1997, and the last major show to be played there until the Coventry festival in 2004. As we discuss, the end of an era.But in between that is all the passion for the music. Phish played Sugarbush the previous year in the summer of 1994–a show immortalized as a highly tradeable tape and released as one of the original Live Phish albums. The band decided to double-down for 1995 and play two nights, complete with on-site camping. When you hear Shoheen describe the crowd and hear his story of how he got in, it's no wonder that the band would produce their own festival, The Clifford Ball, the following year. There's so much more, though. Let's join Shoheen to discuss the evolution of Simple, the Sigma Oasis album, and how a moose ends up on stage on July 3, 1995 at Sugarbush Mountain.Support the show

The week in football opens with the Premier League once again asserting its presence across European competition, with multiple English sides progressing deep into the latter stages. The discussion begins with a full Whip Around the Grounds from Matchweek 33, before moving into what this success says about the league's overall strength — and where that strength sits within the football landscape. From there, the conversation shifts into the financial realities underpinning that dominance. Revenue distribution, contrasts with other European leagues, and the implications of those models are explored, alongside a comparison between the Champions League and Europa League in their current formats.Attention then turns to the football calendar, including fixture congestion, end-of-season scheduling, and how European progress could influence Premier League run-ins. This leads into a discussion on atmosphere — comparing the Premier League experience with European competition environments.Chelsea's current trajectory becomes a central focus, with analysis of their recent form, internal dynamics, and broader structural concerns. Financial pressure, recruitment strategy, and dressing room stability are all examined within the context of their position. The episode then moves to the promoted sides, highlighting the improved competitiveness at the bottom of the league. Leeds and Sunderland's campaigns are analysed, alongside the challenges faced by newly promoted teams. The Championship promotion race is also reviewed. Finally, the discussion turns to Liverpool's season, beginning with the expectations set by their summer transfer window and where those expectations have fallen short. Injuries, squad construction, and tactical changes are considered, along with the wider conversation around contracts in modern football.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables & Intro(00:39) - Week in Football Setup & Show Overview(00:55) - WATG: Matchweek 33 Roundup(02:31) - Premier League Strength in Europe Debate(04:08) - Financial Distribution & League Structure Analysis(06:33) - Europa League vs Champions League Context(08:41) - European Scheduling & End-of-Season Impact(10:15) - Player Lifestyle & Post-Match Culture Discussion(12:04) - FA Cup Timing, World Cup Impact & Calendar Changes(13:46) - Atmosphere Debate: Premier League vs Europe(15:38) - European Competitions Value & League Phase Critique(16:33) - Chelsea Collapse: Form, Management & Culture(18:06) - Dressing Room Dynamics & Off-Pitch Narrative(19:11) - Financial Pressure & Structural Concerns at Chelsea(24:05) - Promoted Teams: Leeds, Sunderland & Survival Context(24:52) - Premier League Quality Gap & Promotion Challenges(26:00) - Championship Promotion Race & Teams to Watch(26:53) - Sunderland Model & Recruitment Blueprint(29:22) - Coventry, Frank Lampard & Promotion Outlook(30:23) - Liverpool Transfer Window Hype vs Reality(31:00) - Injuries, Squad Build & Tactical Misalignment(33:05) - Loss of Creativity: Trent Alexander-Arnold Impact(33:49) - Squad Strategy, Contracts & Structural Issues(35:06) - Title Defence Collapse & Recruitment Critique(38:00) - Financial Constraints & Squad Rebuild Outlook(41:09) - Liverpool Recruitment, Sales Model & Future Risks(42:27) - Aging Squad & Contract Value Debate(43:59) - Transfer Fees, Expectations & Player Value(45:44) - Big Contracts Debate: Pressure vs Performance(48:43) - Legacy Contracts vs Performance Reality(50:35) - Do Big Contracts Ever Work? There's also plenty to unpack in We Need to Talk About, including the rise of late goals in the Premier League and what it says about fitness, mentality and game management. The conversation also turns to PSG, with Paris Saint-Germain's ability to influence Ligue 1 fixture scheduling raising big questions about power and fairness in the game. Finally, in Stoppage Time, attention turns to the FA Cup and whether the magic of one-off ties still carries the same weight in modern football. From Coventry to Pep Guardiola, from PSG to Bernardo Silva, this is another episode packed with insight, opinion and stories from the heart of the game. #PepGuardiola #ManchesterCity #PSG #ParisSaintGermain #PremierLeague #FACup #XaviSimons #BernardoSilva #FootballPodcast #JoyOfFootball
