Lucy Letby, the British neonatal nurse previously found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others, is back in court facing charges of attempted murder involving a baby girl known as Child K. Lucy Letby, 34, who was convicted last year of multiple counts of infant murder and attempted murder at the Countess of Chester Hospital, is on trial again for the alleged attempted murder of another infant, identified only as Child K. The incident reportedly took place in February 2016 while Letby was on shift in the hospital's neonatal unit. During the court session on Tuesday, Judge Mr. Justice Goss addressed the jury, emphasizing the importance of basing their verdict solely on the evidence presented in court. He stated, “Your task is to determine on all the evidence placed before you, and on nothing else, whether [Letby] attempted to murder another baby called (Child K) during the period when she was found to have murdered or attempted to murder other babies.” Goss added, “You will try this case, I repeat, on the evidence that is placed before you. You are the sole judges of fact. You will decide what is and what is not truthful from the evidence and the conclusions and assessment you draw from the evidence.” He also reminded the jury of the fundamental legal principle that anyone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty, stating, “It is for the prosecution to prove guilt by making you sure of the accused's guilt.” Letby was removed from her position at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2016 after senior staff grew suspicious due to a series of unexplained infant deaths and near-deaths over the previous year. Following an extensive investigation, she was arrested in July 2018. During her 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors accused Letby of heinous acts including force-feeding milk to infants, poisoning them with insulin, and injecting air into their tiny bodies. The court found her guilty in August 2023 on 14 of the 22 counts she faced, resulting in a life sentence. At her sentencing, the judge condemned Letby's actions, describing her behavior as a “cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children.” Despite the overwhelming evidence and her conviction, Letby has consistently denied any involvement in the infants' deaths. The new trial has reignited distress among the families affected by Letby's previous actions. The community remains deeply affected by the tragic loss of life and the breach of trust by a caregiver in such a crucial and sensitive role. The outcome of this new trial will depend on the jury's assessment of the evidence presented in court regarding the alleged attempted murder of Child K. As the trial proceeds, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served based on the facts. Lucy Letby's new trial is a pivotal moment in a case that has already shocked the nation. The court's determination in this matter will be closely watched by the public and the families of the victims, as they seek closure and justice for the alleged crimes committed against their loved ones. This time she is facing one charge – the attempted murder of a very premature baby girl, known as Baby K. Today, as the trial got underway, the jury were told she was caught “virtually red handed” by a consultant as she tried to dislodge the breathing tube of Baby K in an attempt to kill her. She then allegedly dislodged the tube twice more to cover her tracks.  The jury were told Lucy Letby is a convicted baby killer and her previous convictions were relevant to the charge she now faces. She denies the charge and her defence barrister told the court Baby K was so premature that she was clinically fragile. Both the prosecution and the defence barristers told the jury they ultimately had to decide if they believed the consultant who claims he caught her in the act. The murder last February of Brianna Ghey, a 16-year-old transgender girl, shocked Britain. She had been stabbed 28 times, in a public park, in broad daylight. In December, a jury at Manchester Crown Court found two teenagers, Girl X and Boy Y, guilty of the murder; they had lured Ghey to the park to satisfy an “obsession” with death. The judge said she would impose a life sentence but would adjourn to February 2nd to decide a minimum tariff. In an highly unusual move she also said she would name Girl X and Boy Y. We now know they are Scarlet Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe. On Friday they received minimum terms of 22 and 20 years respectively.Irish Times London correspondent Mark Paul explains why the naming of the two underage killers is highly unusual; and having spent time in Warrington he reports on the local reaction to this shocking killing. The 16-year-old was stabbed 28 times in a Cheshire park in February. Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said jurors might find it difficult to fathom how two children could do what was alleged but urged them not to look for an explanation.   The pair, who were 15 at the time, deny murder and blame each other. In her closing speech, Ms Heer said the jury may be tempted to look for an explanation as "they are children after all", but added the prosecution do not have to prove why a crime has been committed, only that it has been.   "Don't be tempted to try and work out why they did what they [allegedly] did if you're sure they did it," she told Manchester Crown Court. Ms Heer said both encouraged the other in the attack, adding the evidence showed both defendants participated in Brianna's murder by encouraging the other, by contributing to a plan to kill her, by taking part in the plan and by trying to conceal evidence afterwards.   Ms Heer said the prosecution accepted some of the messages the boy and girl, identified only as girl X and boy Y, exchanged were initially fantasies about killing people.

Dr Brearey claimed senior staff at the Countess of Chester Hospital were worried about reputational damage to the organisation, and that instead of acting on his warnings, he and his colleagues' lives were made 'very difficult'. In a shocking verdict delivered at the Manchester Crown Court, Lucy Letby, a 33-year-old British nurse, was convicted on charges of murdering seven newborn infants and attempting to murder six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England. This harrowing court battle spanned 10 months, with Letby now recognized as Britain's most notorious child killer in contemporary times, according to prominent local media outlets.   With intense emotions resonating in the courtroom, Letby's crimes were primarily committed during her night shifts in 2015 and 2016. The seven victims she fatally attacked comprised five baby boys and two baby girls.   "Understanding the 'why' behind such heinous acts might forever remain a mystery," shared the grieving families of the victims in an emotional statement. "Our hearts are shattered. The feeling of devastation, anger, and numbness is overwhelming."   The gruesome details presented during the trial included how Letby administered fatal dosages. Prosecutors detailed that she poisoned several infants by injecting them with insulin. Others faced a grim fate when injected with air or were force-fed milk. Some infants endured multiple assaults before tragically succumbing.   A chilling handwritten note unearthed by police in Letby's residence provided a glimpse into her mental state: "I intentionally took their lives because I felt incompetent to care for them. I'm the embodiment of evil." This note echoed her haunting words, "I AM EVIL I DID THIS".   Highlighting the depth of her nefarious acts, some of the infants Letby targeted were twins. In a particularly distressing case, she succeeded in killing both siblings, while in others, one twin would tragically lose their life.   One can hardly comprehend the gravity of her actions when considering the age of her youngest victim - merely a day old.   Upon the conclusion of the trial, prosecutor Nick Johnson depicted Letby as a "constant malevolent presence." Her sinister actions first drew suspicion when senior doctors noticed a surge in unexplained deaths in the neonatal unit over an 18-month span starting January 2015. This unit, dedicated to premature or sick babies, was where Letby was assigned.   Social media portrayed a stark contrast, showcasing a cheerful Letby with an active social life. Yet, trial testimonies painted a picture of a determined and cold-blooded killer. The jury learned of her persistent attempts to end a baby girl's life and her audacious claim to a mother: "Trust me, I'm a nurse."   Despite her web of deceit, Letby broke down during her 14-day testimony. She vehemently denied the allegations, citing understaffing and unsanitary conditions on the ward as the culprits. She further alleged a conspiracy against her by four doctors and claimed the handwritten note was a result of feeling overwhelmed.   However, the prosecution was unyielding, branding Letby as a calculated and deceitful liar. Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes, who helmed the investigation, reflected, "Unless she decides to open up, the real motive might remain an enigma."   Dr. Stephen Brearey from the neonatal unit lamented the hospital administration's lack of proactive measures despite consistent concerns raised by him and his colleagues. Nigel Scawn, Medical Director at Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, expressed profound remorse, emphasizing the commitment to continuous learning from this tragedy.   The government's involvement includes an independent inquiry focusing on addressing clinician concerns. A devastated father, whose twins miraculously survived Letby's murderous intent, implored the hospital for answers, stating, "They had the power to prevent this." Lucy Letby's dark past is being further probed, extending to her tenure at another Liverpool hospital where she received her training. Detective Hughes confirmed, "We're actively investigating several cases and have informed the concerned parents."   This heart-wrenching story serves as a testament to the importance of due diligence, compassion, and the vital role of healthcare professionals in society.
