Dr Billy Garvey gets kids. A developmental and behavioural paediatrician with over twenty years experience, Billy is an expert at up-skilling kids with the fundamental skills of empathy, kindness, compassion and self-esteem. Due to the extremely high demand for his expertise (the clinic waiting list is most likely seven years long at this point), Billy decided to co-produce his own podcast ‘Pop-Culture Parenting', and has also just released a book Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child's Mental Health. In this Academy, Billy gets into the nitty gritty about masculinity, role modelling and teaching emotional regulation to kids, especially young boys (we even talk about porn). Extremely generous in sharing his own story, Billy reveals the purpose behind his clinic, and how he finds immense privilege in being here to do the work that he does (you're going to need tissues). What if we could prevent more kids from having to have invasive surgery? During this episode, we are joined by Katie Corrado, who invented a product that works as an alternative to surgery for babies and children. Tune in to hear how her first-hand experience of watching her child struggle with an umbilical hernia led her to an innovative solution that she now offers to other families facing the same challenge. You'll also learn why Katie is an advocate for proactive rather than reactive medical solutions and how her passion for connecting with kids led her to work as a Physical Therapist rather than a Paediatrician. An associate professor and neonatal paediatrician from Auckland University is describing Pharmac's decision not to fund an RSV-preventative drug as "disappointing". For the last three winters the drug - which is given monthly over winter to high-risk infants to reduce the risk of RSV infection - has been covered by COVID-19 response funding. But Pharmac says Palivizumab has now been placed on the list of medicines it would like to fund, but which it cannot under its current budget. Dr Jane Alsweiler spoke to Susie Ferguson.

The South Island's West Coast and Bay of Plenty are facing the worst medical specialist shortages.  The problem is so severe people in some regions have to travel a hundred kilometres to see a paediatrician.  The shortfalls —including oncologists and dermatologists— are contributing to lengthening waitlists.  Te Whatu Ora data shows the number of patients waiting more than a year for treatment is growing in 14 out of 20 districts.  General and Development Paediatrician Dr David Newman told Mike Hosking that they're trying their best to stop the problem from sinking further.  He says their waiting lists are horrendous and they don't know how to fix them without more staff.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She joins Nuala to talk about why she wanted to write the novel and why it's so personal for her. In recent months there's been increasing momentum for what has been called Martha's rule which would give patients the power to get an automatic second medical opinion from other experts. This comes after the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills who died in hospital. An inquest concluded that her death had been preventable. So what difference could Martha's Rule make to how much say patients have to question the decisions made by doctors? Paediatrician and health campaigner Dr Guddi Singh wants to empower people so that medical care works in their best interests and joins Nuala. Three quarters of police officers and staff accused of violence against women are not suspended by their force.
