The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) doesn't operate like a typical HR policy or leave law – and treating it that way can create risk. In this episode, hosts Nicole LeFave and Claire Deason are joined by Shelley Ericsson and James McGehee to explore how this unique law governs employee rights and employer obligations. From notice requirements with a low bar and numerous exceptions to protections that can span years, the group unpacks what sets this law apart – and why it can catch even the most sophisticated employers off guard. Along the way, they challenge some common assumptions and explain why a “we'll handle it like other leave” approach doesn't work. They also cover recent developments and important nuances, including expanded anti-retaliation protections and enforcement trends, along with practical steps employers can take now to strengthen compliance and avoid costly surprises. https://www.littler.com/news-analysis/podcast/littler-lounge-orders-received-userra-compliance-briefing

This week on The Geek in Review, we talk with Abdi Shayesteh, CEO of AltaClaro, and Jeanine Conley Daves, Littler's New York office managing shareholder, about a different question in the legal AI conversation. Instead of asking whether AI will write the brief, summarize the contract, or replace the junior associate, they focus on whether AI might help lawyers learn how to practice law. Their recent work around AltaClaro's DepoSim points toward a model of legal training built less on passive observation and more on structured repetition, feedback, and skill development.Shayesteh traces the origin of AltaClaro back to his own early years at King & Spalding, where he benefited from proximity to a mentor willing to explain the work. That experience also showed him the unevenness of the old apprenticeship model. Access to assignments, feedback, and sponsorship often depended on luck, relationships, and office geography. For Shayesteh, the idea of a “flight simulator for lawyers” grew out of the realization that pilots, athletes, and musicians all practice in structured environments before performance, while lawyers too often learn in front of clients, courts, and opposing counsel.DepoSim applies this flight simulator concept to one of litigation's highest-pressure skills: taking and defending depositions. The platform gives attorneys a simulated witness, opposing counsel, court reporter, and feedback system, with options to vary the difficulty and personalities involved. Conley Daves explains why this kind of realism matters. In a real deposition, a lawyer might face an evasive witness, a hostile witness, an aggressive opposing counsel, or a combination of all three. The simulator lets lawyers practice those moments repeatedly, receive targeted feedback, and return to specific skills such as exhibit handling, follow-up questions, or managing objections. The conversation also connects AI training to equity in professional development. Conley Daves notes that access to high-quality assignments and sponsorship has not always been distributed evenly across firms. A standardized, rubric-based feedback system gives more lawyers a chance to build core skills without waiting to be selected by the right partner or assigned to the right matter. Shayesteh adds that firms seeing the strongest results are not treating training as an after-hours side quest. They are creating protected time for deliberate practice, pairing AI feedback with human mentorship, and using simulation as a bridge rather than a substitute for coaching.Looking ahead, Shayesteh and Conley Daves see simulation moving well beyond depositions. Oral argument, cross-examination, meet-and-confer sessions, negotiations, client interviews, and even Supreme Court preparation all fit within this training model. The larger shift is not automation for its own sake. It is the use of AI to help lawyers build judgment before the stakes are real. For law firms, that means better preparation, more consistent training, stronger associate development, and a clearer path toward delivering value to clients. For the profession, it suggests a future where competence is practiced deliberately, measured thoughtfully, and taught more fairly.Listen on mobile platforms: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube | Substack[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Email: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript:

Recorded live at the 2026 Executive Employer Conference – and continuing the celebration of one year in the Lounge – this second installment brings additional conversations straight from the conference floor. Hosts Claire Deason and Nicole LeFave connect with more Littler attorneys to explore what's rising to the top for employers right now – from navigating global volatility and its ripple effects on the workforce (because “predictable” isn't really the theme this year) to keeping pace with evolving background check requirements and to the ever-expanding role of compliance in a rapidly shifting landscape. Along the way, they also circle back to highlights from the conference's general session – yes, including the moment everyone didn't know they needed – and explore the history behind the Executive Employer Conference. If Part 1 got things started, Part 2 rounds it out – with a few final takeaways we're still thinking about after the conversations wrapped. https://www.littler.com/news-analysis/podcast/littler-lounge-location-executive-employer-conference-one-more-round-insights
What does it mean to “step up” – and why does it matter? In this Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month episode of Littler Celebrates, Esther Redman, an associate in Littler's Phoenix office, is joined by Angel Garrett, a shareholder in Littler's San Francisco office, and Jordan Wada, an associate in Littler's Seattle office, to discuss how bar associations and community involvement help build connection, confidence and career momentum. Grounded in this year's AANHPI Heritage Month theme, Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together, the conversation explores how leadership often begins with small steps – mentoring a peer, raising a hand, or creating space for others. Along the way, they reflect on the lasting impact of history, the importance of representation, and how investing in others continues to shape the future of the legal profession.
Recorded live at the 2026 Executive Employer Conference – and marking one year in the Lounge (which somehow feels both brand new and well seasoned) – this episode brings you a rapid-fire lineup of insights straight from the conference floor. Hosts Claire Deason and Nicole LeFave catch up with Littler attorneys fresh from their sessions to unpack the issues employers may want to keep their eye on – from leave programs (that seem to update just when you think you've figured them out) to the strategy behind class action litigation to workplace conflict that has a habit of starting small and… not staying that way. Think of it as your conference highlight reel – key takeaways, quick perspectives, and none of the competition for a decent seat. This is part one of a two-part series – join us next week for more insights, more conversations, and a few extra takeaways we couldn't leave behind. https://www.littler.com/news-analysis/podcast/littler-lounge-location-executive-employer-conference-takeaways-part-1

In this episode, hosts Nicole LeFave and Claire Deason are joined by Shareholder Rachel Fendell Satinsky to explore what employers need to know when the “office” looks nothing like an office at all. While camp itself may only run for a few months, the employment law considerations begin well before the first camper arrives – and often continue after the last canoe is stored away. A Note from Jacob: Welcome to the 425th episode of Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast! When I started this platform back in November 2019, I did not know that this journey would take me to interview authors, Emmy-winning actors and journalists, Grammy-winning producers, independent recording artists, my fellow podcasters, Reality TV legends, and social media influencers. Thank you to all my guests and their respective media teams for taking time out of your schedules to trust me and my platform! Also, a special shoutout to my family and friends who encouraged me throughout my journey! Finally, I want to say “Thank You” to everyone who has listened to or watched an episode! I appreciate your continuing support! I am thrilled to welcome back my friend, author, and content creator Marcus J. Anthony, to Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar! The Dublin native is an upcoming author who previously published Love of Sacrifice, then rebooted it as The World of Antheric. Some who have known Marcus from school found the news of his book a surprise, as Marcus struggled through school dealing with dyslexia and social anxiety. Marcus lacked focus in his studies and would spend most of his time daydreaming about flying on dragons or waving a wand to cast a spell. Fantasy fueled Marcus's mind. However, it caused him to fall behind in school. He would be exempt from Irish language studies, which was disheartening for him, as he could not translate his country's original language. When Marcus was ten, he suffered from sleep anxiety. So, he decided to use his strong imagination to create ‘movies' in his head that would help him sleep. That was when some of the characters in this novel were created. In the years that followed, the movies in his head developed into a magical world that Marcus could not resist writing about. Creative writing became his passion, and Marcus would not allow his dyslexia to stop him from achieving. He spent most of his teenage years (staying home on weekends) writing and learning until he found his writing style. Marcus has a great love for animals and supports charities. He is vocal about awareness of animal abuse, which is expressed in the story through Jenin's past experiences. Marcus has four cats: Summer, Junior, Littler, and Leia. In 2017, Marcus fell into a dark spell of generalized anxiety and depression, which delayed the release of his book. The Black Grawth came from his experience with anxiety and panic attacks. And Gaul – the Dark Lord- represented the darkness of depression. With the help of treatment, family, and meditation, Marcus found strength and happiness again and continues to write, drawing inspiration from the world around him. Since 2024, Marcus J. Anthony has established EliteMJ TV, which started with the original fan fiction series, Pokémon Next Generation. Set 10 years after Ash Ketchum won the Pokémon World Championship, the series follows Johto native Marc Masters, who hero-worships Ash, and travels across Kanto with his friends, Rachel Oak-Stone and Anthony Green. So far, Marc has earned five gym badges from Forrest (Brock's youngest brother), Rain (Misty's cousin), Sgt. Sara (Lt. Surge's daughter), Skorcha (Blaine's granddaughter), and Erika. The trio also battled foes in the form of Nastina, Earl, and Blurt, and Team Justice. In addition to earning gym badges, Marc uncovered a threat that could destroy the Pokémon world: this threat's name is Mew-Z. This Pokémon is unlike any creature that inhabits this world; it is pure evil. This monstrosity was the brainchild of Team Rocket leader Giovanni and brought to life by the sinister Dr. Yung and Evice, using genes from Mew, Mewtwo, Zygarde, and unknown factors. While it is powerful, Mew-Z has not reached its final form. According to Looker, for Mew-Z to reach its full potential, it must absorb both Mew and Mewtwo in one hour. The creature has begun hunting down mythical and legendary Pokémon, as well as Zygarde cells, to boost its power. Both Jirachi and Tapu Koko have fallen victim to this monstrosity. He is also growing a following and assisting him with his misdeeds are Evice and a mysterious, red-haired woman named Commander, who kidnapped both Ash Ketchum and Pikachu at the series' beginning. On the 425th edition of Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar, Marcus J. Anthony spoke about the upcoming Pokémon: The Next Champion, introduced Pokémon NG Chronicles, and previewed the developments of Tales of Old Galar and Tales of War. The Fallout Bar - LITTLER STRUGGLES | 2026 PDC Premier League Night Ten Brighton
What happens when employees ask to bring animals into the workplace – and how should employers respond? In this episode of Littler Lounge, hosts Claire Deason and Nicole LeFave are joined by Littler shareholder Trevor Hardy to unpack the landscape of service animals, emotional support animals and workplace accommodations – for a conversation that proves these requests aren't always as straightforward as an ergonomic chair. Drawing on both professional experience and personal perspective, Trevor walks through the issues an employer may need to consider when requests for service animals and emotional support animals come in, from understanding what federal and state laws do (and don't) say to managing coworker concerns, allergies, and the occasional skeptical side eye. The conversation explores what the interactive process really looks like in practice, why these requests are on the rise, and what happens when good intentions, legal requirements and office dynamics don't always align neatly. Listen in for some helpful tips when accommodation requests come with fur, maybe a leash and a lot of questions. https://www.littler.com/news-analysis/podcast/littler-lounge-accommodations-unleashed-what-employers-need-know-about
Luke Littler, the teenage darts phenomenon who has taken the sport by storm, is now making headlines off the oche by moving to trademark his own image. In this episode of Mark and Pete, we unpack what that actually means in a world where artificial intelligence can generate faces, voices, and entire personalities in seconds. Is this a smart and necessary step to protect personal identity, or a slightly futile attempt to hold back a technological tide that has already come in?We explore how image rights are evolving in the age of AI, where the old concerns about paparazzi and press intrusion have been replaced by something far stranger. Today, anyone with basic tools can recreate a public figure's likeness, raising serious questions about ownership, consent, and the future of celebrity. Littler's move may well be the first of many as athletes, actors, and public figures begin to realise that their “image” is no longer just something captured by a camera, but something endlessly reproducible. There is also a deeper cultural and philosophical layer here. What does it mean to “own” your face? Why do we instinctively feel that our likeness should not be used without permission? And what happens when technology makes that boundary almost impossible to enforce? With their usual blend of wit, cultural commentary, and understated humour, Mark and Pete dig into the legal realities, the technological challenges, and the slightly absurd implications of trying to trademark something as personal as your own face. It's a conversation about identity, control, and the strange new world we are quietly building around ourselves.
What do acronyms, inspections, and everyday workplace decisions have in common? Quite a lot, as it turns out. In this episode, hosts Claire Deason and Nicole LeFave are joined by Alka Ramchandani-Raj, a leader of Littler's OSHA practice, for a look at how workplace safety operates beyond the rulebook. Alka demystifies what OSHA actually does, walks through what employers can expect during an inspection, and explains why safety culture and written policies matter. The conversation also touches on emerging developments – from heat illness regulations and concerns over workplace violence to the expanding role of AI – offering practical insight into how safety expectations continue to evolve. It's a practical, engaging conversation that proves workplace safety can be both approachable and relevant – no hard hat required (but please buckle your seatbelt)! https://www.littler.com/news-analysis/podcast/littler-lounge-osha-explained-prevention-preparedness-and-protection

The Littler Lounge heads back to Europe as hosts Nicole LeFave and Claire Deason welcome Nic James, a partner from Littler's London office, for a timely conversation on the EU Pay Transparency Directive. With rules taking shape across member states – and not always in identical ways – the group explores what employers can expect and how to prepare thoughtfully. The discussion covers recruiting disclosures, employee pay information rights, reporting thresholds, and the broader business implications of increased transparency. Along the way, they highlight why pay equity planning benefits from both legal precision and a global point of view – especially when compliance conversations span borders and time zones. The number of people working past retirement age is growing. New analysis of tax data found a 12% rise over the past five years. It was carried out by the specialist employment law firm, Littler, which says official estimates for the last financial year show 2.1 million workers and self-employed people are over state pension age. For some people carrying on working is a positive choice. They enjoy the routine, like the social side, and of course the money but for others it's much more about necessity, when pensions alone not stretching far enough. But, how flexible are employers when it comes to older workers and what are the tax implications of collecting your state or private pension while still working? To talk it all through Felicity Hannah is joined by Zoe Alexander, Director of Policy at Pensions UK, Morgan Vine, Director of Policy at charity Independent Age and Julie Dennis, Head of Inclusive Workplace Strategy at ACAS.Presenter: Felicity Hannah Producer: Sarah Rogers Editor: Jess Quayle Senior Editor: Sara Wadeson(This episode was first broadcast on Wednesday the 28th of January 2026)
Hosts Claire Deason and Nicole LeFave are joined by Jeff Nowak to talk about how a moment of professional curiosity turned into a deep focus on the FMLA and ADA – and eventually into one of Littler's most comprehensive master classes. Jeff shares how practical storytelling, real-world scenarios, and fast-moving case law shape the way he practices and teaches in this space. The conversation covers reasonable accommodation, remote work, neurodiversity, mental health, performance management, and why the interactive process remains a constant through it all. Along the way, Jeff introduces a few familiar (and fictional) employees, explains how recent court decisions are influencing employer approaches, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into building a course designed to meet people wherever they are. And if this episode leaves you wanting more, Jeff's FMLA and ADA Master Class kicks off March 3-6, 2026. Four full days of instruction, with a return session later in the year to cover the updates that will inevitably follow. https://www.littler.com/news-analysis/podcast/littler-lounge-so-much-fmla-so-little-time-preview-littlers-fmla-and-ada

Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jonathan Liew, Charlie Eccleshare and Charlie Wyett to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We begin with Luke Littler's emphatic victory over Gian van Veen at Alexandra Palace, securing back-to-back World Darts Championship titles. Are we still underestimating just how good Littler is — and could he one day surpass Phil Taylor's record of 14 world titles?Attention then turns to the Premier League, as Arsenal edge Bournemouth 3–2. A dominant Declan Rice performance, including a brace, helped extend their lead at the top to six points in a fixture that saw them stumble last season following William Saliba's red card. Have Arsenal learned the lessons from last year's title run-in?Next, we turn our attention to the Ashes as England close Day One of the fifth Test. We cross live to Sydney to speak with Adam Collins, who highlights the key partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root. The discussion also covers Usman Khawaja's retirement, with the Australian speaking about continuing to challenge racial stereotypes within the game.We then discuss Aston Villa's impressive form, which has kept them within six points of Arsenal. While Charlie isn't convinced they're in the title race, he's impressed by their performances following the modest work done in the summer. Finally, we're joined by Gary Cotterill, who reports on Strasbourg's 1-1 draw at Nice, before bringing the latest as Chelsea close in on Liam Rosenior.Sunday Supplement is a Sky Sports podcast.
