Former British nurse, Lucy Letby, is serving 15 life sentences for the murder and attempted murder of 14 babies. All of the infants were under her care when they were killed between 2015 and 2016. This summer her case was thrown out of the Court of Appeal. And yet doubts remain amongst a cohort of people who believe she may have been wrongly convicted on circumstantial evidence. Bizarre interventions on her behalf include that of the former Brexit Secretary, David Davis, on Good Morning Britain last week. Families of the victims say they are dismayed certain elements of the 10 month trial have been taken out of context and fuelled with misinformation. So why exactly do Letby's supporters believe she should walk free? We speak to miscarriage of justice investigator, David James Smith, who sat on the UK's Criminal Cases Review Commission between 2013 and 2018. Hosted on Acast. Lucy Letby, the British neonatal nurse previously found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others, is back in court facing charges of attempted murder involving a baby girl known as Child K. Lucy Letby, 34, who was convicted last year of multiple counts of infant murder and attempted murder at the Countess of Chester Hospital, is on trial again for the alleged attempted murder of another infant, identified only as Child K. The incident reportedly took place in February 2016 while Letby was on shift in the hospital's neonatal unit. During the court session on Tuesday, Judge Mr. Justice Goss addressed the jury, emphasizing the importance of basing their verdict solely on the evidence presented in court. He stated, “Your task is to determine on all the evidence placed before you, and on nothing else, whether [Letby] attempted to murder another baby called (Child K) during the period when she was found to have murdered or attempted to murder other babies.” Goss added, “You will try this case, I repeat, on the evidence that is placed before you. You are the sole judges of fact. You will decide what is and what is not truthful from the evidence and the conclusions and assessment you draw from the evidence.” He also reminded the jury of the fundamental legal principle that anyone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty, stating, “It is for the prosecution to prove guilt by making you sure of the accused's guilt.” Letby was removed from her position at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2016 after senior staff grew suspicious due to a series of unexplained infant deaths and near-deaths over the previous year. Following an extensive investigation, she was arrested in July 2018. During her 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutors accused Letby of heinous acts including force-feeding milk to infants, poisoning them with insulin, and injecting air into their tiny bodies. The court found her guilty in August 2023 on 14 of the 22 counts she faced, resulting in a life sentence. At her sentencing, the judge condemned Letby's actions, describing her behavior as a “cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children.” Despite the overwhelming evidence and her conviction, Letby has consistently denied any involvement in the infants' deaths. The new trial has reignited distress among the families affected by Letby's previous actions. The community remains deeply affected by the tragic loss of life and the breach of trust by a caregiver in such a crucial and sensitive role. The outcome of this new trial will depend on the jury's assessment of the evidence presented in court regarding the alleged attempted murder of Child K. As the trial proceeds, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served based on the facts. Lucy Letby's new trial is a pivotal moment in a case that has already shocked the nation. The court's determination in this matter will be closely watched by the public and the families of the victims, as they seek closure and justice for the alleged crimes committed against their loved ones. In this episode we discuss how the Countess of Chester hospital management dropped the ball and their series of failures and attempts to cover-up the severity of the situation that led to this tragic outcome. 1 During trial, Lucy Letby blamed the neonatal unit doctors for being out to get her - “the Gang of Four” she called them: John Gibbs, Stephen Breaery, Ravi Jayram and another pediatrician. In reality, these doctors were the ones who fought the hospital management in order to get police involved and stop the horrific murders. 2 Nurse Letby injected air into the newborn's tummies and veins (air embolus), poisoned them with insulin, overfed them milk, even hit them hard causing organ damage and showed metal objects down their throats causing them to bleed uncontrollably and go into cardiac arrest. Some of the babies that survived are left with permanent brain injuries from the lack of oxygen they endured before being resuscitated. An inquiry is ongoing as to why hospital management were so slow to act, but this is not a public inquiry which obliges witnesses to give statements under oath. In this episode we also discuss other medical professionals who killed their patients: nurse Beverley Allitt – known as the “angel of death”, doctor Harold Shipman and nurse Charles Cullen. We also look at an egregious case of malpraxis in which an Atlanta, GA doctor named Tracey St Julian decapitated a baby during childbirth. 1. Nurse Lucy Letby seeks to appeal against her convictions after murdering seven babies and attempting to kill another six. Letby was sentenced last month to life in prison with no chance of release after a jury found her guilty of the seven murders between June 2015 and June 2016. UK correspondent Gavin Grey says this news comes after another hearing was confirmed to determine whether the Crown Prosecution Service will pursue a retrial for Letby's six counts of attempted murder. Lucy Letby is one of England's most notorious female killers. In 2015, infants began dying in the NICU at an alarming rate at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, Chesire, England. It was like nothing the hospital had experienced before or since. Nurse Lucy Letby was making infants sick, and many of them died. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the notorious Lucy Letby. Even though people voiced their suspicions to upper management at the hospital, nothing was done, and more infants died. When the details of what happened came out, the public was shocked and disgusted. Letby was convicted but continues claiming she is innocent, so she has never revealed her true motivations. But many believe she wanted to play the hero or get the attention of a married doctor for whom she had feelings. It's been a long time coming, but we are finally bringing you the story of Lucy Letby. Lucy Letby, a woman, by all accounts, that was meek and a little nerdy, working as a neonatal intensive care nurse. A job not many people could handle. One would think she would be considered an angel for the work that she did caring for the tiniest and most fragile of babies. But this so-called angel was a devil in disguise. Lucy Letby & the NHS management, Press & Government, mass murder cover-up The Black Spy Podcast Season 11, Episode 0002 This week's episode is about the shocking revelations concerning the Lucy Letby case and the lack of action taken by doctors not going to the police, NHS managers seemingly preventing anything negative about Letby murdering babies coming to the attention of police. More importantly, unlike with the Police and Fire Brigade, for frankly in comparison, minimal shortcomings; neither the press nor government demand any real accountability from the NHS's most senior management or even hospital trust management for literally 100's of MURDERS committed by NHS staff DURING the exercise of their duties! Why is this and what is the frequency of murders by on duty NHS staff and why do the British media treat these public bodies so differently? In an insightful, interesting and powerful discussion by the Black Spy, Carlton King and his regular journalist podcast partner, Firgas Esack, and Dr. Rachel Taylor put the events surrounding Lucy Letby's murder of 10 babies and the attempted murder a further 7 babies under the microscope. Below is an example of just some of the convicted NHS staff who have murdered their patients whilst on duty in hospitals etc, over the last two decades. • Nurse Beverley Allitt murdered 4 infants, at Grantham hospital, attempted to murder three others and caused grievous bodily harm to a further six infants no demonstrations were held and no great inquiry was sought into the NHS or its leadership! • Nurse Lucy Letby's alleged murders of 7 babies and a further attempted murder of 10 more happened at the same time as Sarah Everarad's murder by a police officer. This single murder by a police officer totally and utterly gains practically all of the press coverage. Letby's 7 murders and 10 attempted murders of babies, have resulted in no demonstrations why? • Nurse Colin Campbell Norris murdered 10 of his patients and attempted to murder at least one other. • Nurse Benjamin Geen murdered at least 2 patients in an Oxfordshire hospital where many other victims did not die, but sustained grave life threatening symptoms at his hands. • Nurse Victorino Chua of Stockport Stepping Hill hospital murdered 2 of his patients and 21 others potential murder victims suffered life threatening hypoglycemia attacks at his hands. • Dr Harold Shipman, from his Manchester surgery, murdered at least 250 of his patients. Yet it is though that over a decade he might well have murdered up to 500 patients. • Surgeon Simon Bramhall regularly signed his initials on patients livers as he operated on them. • Surgeon Ian Patterson was found guilty of operating on countless patients, mainly women, for seemingly no reason. He disfigured his patients by removing their breast etc., which was allegedly done for financial gain according to the relatively little press there was in comparison to the David Carrick police case. Presently the press and even government tell us that police and now Fire Fighters can not be trusted, however, no such suggestion regarding trust has ever been suggested against doctors and nurses despite the horrendous number of murders carried out by serial murdering medics. Indeed, medics are probably the profession who have highest number of serial killers in the UK! At no stage have NHS chiefs appeared on TV, radio or written in periodicals apologising for the the obvious ‘cover -up culture' of NHS Management even when it relates to staff murdering babies! An unusual amount of infant deaths on a neonatal unit at a Chester hospital sparked an investigation that led to one common factor, Lucy Letby. The 33-year-old registered nurse was on shift every time a newborn died or became severely injured. The serial killer went on trial in Crown court, only to be found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to end the lives of six others. British nurse Lucy Letby has been convicted of murdering seven babies in her care, and the attempted murder of six more. Sunday Times Shaun Lintern explains the case, and why the country's health-care system now faces questions about how Letby was able to kill repeatedly, even though staff around her raised concerns.
Lucy Letby prided herself on caring for infants. The neonatal nurse cared for the most vulnerable of patients: newborns. Then, the hospital noticed that more infants died in the span of a month than would typically die in a year. An investigation reveals that Letby had been the sole nurse working at the time of seven babies. The child deaths span over the course of a year with, again, seven babies dying, while six others survived. Letby made babies sick by injecting intravenous lines with air, some were poisoned, and others were force-fed milk. Letby preyed on twins and triplets. Nurse Lucy Letby is due to be sentenced later after being found guilty of murdering seven babies, making her the UK's most prolific child serial killer in modern times. The trial lasted for more than 10 months and is believed to be the longest murder trial in the UK. She has indicated she will not be in court for the hearing. The government has ordered an independent inquiry into the circumstances behind serial killer Lucy Letby's baby murders. Detectives are reviewing the care of all babies admitted to hospital while Letby was working as a neonatal nurse. The review includes her work placements at Liverpool Women's Hospital in 2012 and 2015, although police say this did not involve any deaths. The Department of Health said it would look at how clinicians' concerns were handled, as a BBC investigation found hospital bosses ignored doctors' warnings about Letby. There are also calls for the inquiry the government has announced to be upgraded into a statutory public inquiry. Today's Mishal Husain speaks to Dame Christine Beasley, former Chief Nursing Officer for England 2004-2012 and current non-Executive director with Kings College NHS Trust, and the Health minister, Claire Coutinho.

Between 2015 and 2016, the mortality rates for infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Britain were unusually high. There were so many deaths and unexplained medical incidents occurring that the hospital actually stopped accepting premature infants to care for. There seemed to be a common denominator in the hospital when these deaths– many of the babies had been around British nurse Lucy Letby. After a primary investigation, Lucy was moved to clerical duties at the hospital. On 11 November 2020, Lucy was charged with eight counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder in regards to the babies who had died or been injured under her care. Lucy's alleged victims have not been named publicly, and are noted in court documents as Baby A – Baby Q. Part of the prosecution against Lucy includes some notes that she allegedly wrote. One of the notes stated: “ I don't deserve to live. I DID THIS WHY ME. I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough to care for them, and I am horrible and evil person.'
