Returning poet BJ is back with a new a rap-style piece!
This is the story of a three-year-old girl and the highest court in the land. The Supreme Court case Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl is a legal battle that has entangled a biological father, a heart-broken couple, and the tragic history of Native American children taken from their families. We originally released this story back in 2013, when that girl's fate was still in the balance of various legal decisions. We thought now was a good time to bring the story back, because the Act at the center of the story is still being questioned. When then-producer Tim Howard first read about this case, it struck him as a sad but seemingly straightforward custody dispute. But, as he started talking to lawyers and historians and the families involved in the case, it became clear that it was much more than that. Because Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl challenges parts of the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act, this case puts one little girl at the center of a storm of legal intricacies, Native American tribal culture, and heart-wrenching personal stakes.LATERAL CUTS:What Up Holmes? The GatekeeperEPISODE CREDITS:Reported by - Tim HowardProduced by - Tim HowardEPISODE CITATIONS (so many):Background and Reporting from a range of different perspectives"Couple forced to give up daughter"An introductory article by Allyson Bird, for the Charleston, SC Post and Courier"Supreme Court Takes on Indian Child Welfare Act in Baby Veronica Case" A report for Indian Country Today by Suzette Brewer, who has also written a two-part series on the case."Supreme Court hears Indian child custody case"Tulsa World article by Michael Overall which includes Dusten Brown's account of his break-up with Veronica's mother, and his understanding about his custodial rights. You expect a first feature to show its stripes a bit. And be a little bit excusable. As in, well, this is my guest, Zoe Eisenberg's first feature, so give her a little credit for just getting it done. Zoe said hell no — let's just jump to fantastic filmmaking. The best way I'd describe CHAPERONE (2024) is a slow burn that builds into a bonfire. The film's logline: “Alienated by friends and family for her lack of ambition, 29 year old Misha finds a dangerous acceptance in a bright 18 year old athlete who mistakes her for a fellow student.”And the ending will shock you. This is an assured debut for a new talent. In this conversation, Zoe and I talk about:All her various art forms and what she considers herself — filmmaker, writer, producer?;How she got involved in filmmaking; What constitutes a “bad” film — is it the writing?;How did CHAPERONE come about and what does she want people to think about when they watch it;Her insane casting story of just sliding into the lead's DMs — and making it work through an insane level of preparation; What it was like making a feature film in Hawaii and its protective nature;Whether she'd do anything different in the rollout of the film since Slamdance 2024;The ending — it will shock you (no spoilers); What's next for her.Zoe's Indie Filmmaker Highlight: Alika TenganMemorable Quotes:“I got into filmmaking because I fell in love with a filmmaker.”“Sometimes I'll think they had to take a lot of notes. CHAPERONE is a completely independent film…very scrappy and that posed a ton of challenges.”“I want [viewers] to trust me because the first 15 minutes, the first 20 minutes can even feel like a cheesy rom-com, which is intentional because then we go somewhere else.”“Hawaii's relationship with the world has been so extractive in the last 200 years.”“Once MAY DECEMBER (2023) came out, we were like, okay, we're Hawaii's MAY DECEMBER or Hawaii's BABYGIRL (2024).”“Without giving anything away, the film is a tragedy.”Links:Watch CHAPERONE Now Follow Zoe On InstagramSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you. Our very special guest from the small screen this week is Aimee Lou Wood. The White Lotus star is back on British screens this month in ‘Film Club'—a BBC rom com that celebrates the healing power of love and, of course, movies. Wood has co-written the series too, and she sits down with Simon to unpack it. She shares what her writing debut has taught her, how she's channeling the spirit of classic rom coms and bringing back “neurotic chatterboxes falling in love”. We might even have a scoop on her next big writing project... Plus Mark reviews the week's most exciting cinema releases. First up, ‘The Smashing Machine'—Benny Safdie's UFC fighter biopic starring The Rock as you've never seen him before. Plus, the much-anticipated directorial debut from Harris Dickison—who you'll know from ‘Triangle of Sadness', ‘Scrapper', ‘Babygirl' and more. His social realist tale ‘Urchin' stars Frank Dillane as the homeless Mike—and it looks an indie treat. Last but not least, another nail-biter from Kathryn Bigelow, ‘A House of Dynamite', which charts the terrifying moments following a nuclear missile launch headed towards the US. Not soothing viewing. WHAT A FINALE!!! Big Brother 27 really showed us to expect to the unexpected! More finales like this and less Mastermind nonsense please thank you!
It's a solo ep! First up, Rihanna's baby girl announcement, and the internet's relief that her family is now “complete.” It speaks to the deep cultural obsession with gender balance and the right we think we have to comment. Gender disappointment is real, and so are the constant judgements about whether our families are “enough.” I share my own experience as a mum of three boys, and why envy and expectation around gender tell us more about society's scripts than our own worth. Then we shift to Bravo, where fractured friendships aredominating every franchise. RHOM ends with bonds in tatters, RHOSLC opens with explosions, and RHOC is still stuck in cycles of betrayal. Why do friendship breakups cut so deep, and how do we process that grief when the people wethought we'd have forever suddenly aren't there? Two conversations that ask: whose script are we living by,and what happens when those scripts fall apart? Thank you to our wonderful audio engineer/producer, Sam Talbot, as always. Send us a textNavigating the complex journey of being an "outside father" requires extraordinary commitment, unconditional love, and raw honesty. This deeply personal episode pulls back the curtain on fatherhood from a distance, revealing both its heartbreaking challenges and profound rewards. When my daughter called me upset because a boy at school called her unattractive, I responded with straightforward wisdom rather than empty comfort. "Is he attractive?" I asked. When she said no, the lesson was clear: "Then what does his opinion matter?" These moments of unfiltered guidance create the bedrock of trust our children need, especially daughters growing up in a world constantly testing their self-worth.The distinction between being a biological father and being a true "daddy" forms the emotional core of this conversation. As I learned from my own godfather who told me at my lowest moment, "I'm your daddy, I love you, and I'll love you until the day I die," real fatherhood transcends blood. This powerful truth—that blood doesn't make family, bonds do—shapes how I parent my own children despite the physical distance between us.Perhaps most gut-wrenching is the reality of temporary time together. When your child looks up with tears saying, "I don't want to go back, daddy, I want to stay with you," there are no perfect words. But through consistent calls, unwavering support, and showing up however possible, we demonstrate that love isn't diminished by distance. For anyone navigating co-parenting, separation from their children, or wondering how to maintain meaningful connections despite physical absence, this raw conversation offers both comfort and practical wisdom.Support the show

Cultivating H.E.R. Space: Uplifting Conversations for the Black Woman
Hey lady! As many of you know a healing journey is more than face masks and bubble baths. It's a deeply personal cultivation of all of your life's experiences and the tools you've picked up along the way. It's the way you find yourself to wholeness and build a life of meaning and fulfillment and it is hard and cyclical and takes effort. It takes real courage to get into the insides of yourself and choose to grow, but it's possible and it's worth it.This week, Dr. Dom and Terri invite Dr. Raquel Martin, a licensed clinical psychologist and host of the Mind Your Mental podcast, to discuss the rigorous path to living a healed life and the enrichment and reward of finding a path that works for you. Mental health and therapy are buzzy right now but those words are more than a passing fad. Dr. Raquel offers a unique perspective via straight talk to illuminate how people can find a path to mental wellness that feels authentic for them. Sometimes that may be boundaries, sometimes that means finding a mental health professional to work with, but all of the time it requires divorcing our thoughts from the patriarchal and colonial constructs that we use to build our realities. Babygirl, that is neither easy nor is it quick work but it is necessary for lasting change.Wise words were once spoken that it all starts with looking ourselves in the mirror. When we begin to do the tough work of having honest conversations with ourselves, being real about our needs and untangling the deep wounding we have as a people we can begin to see more light in our lives so that we can be the light out in this world. Dr. Raquel may not be accepting clients but if you are ready to amplify your healing with support book a consultation with Dr. Dom or check our resources below for the right option for you! We love you for real, lady. Keep thriving!Quote of the Day:"You deserve rest that actually restores you, not just pauses you." – Dr. Raquel Martin Goal Map Like a Pro WorkbookCultivating H.E.R.
