A Few Minutes in The Gospel of Mark  Part 3:  Mark Chapter 1 And Psalm 91  -  English only.  When Matthew and Luke recorded the story of the 40-day temptation in the wilderness, they included quite a few details.  Mark seemed to gloss over the event.  He even omitted the reference to Psalm 91 which Satan quoted during the temptation. Or perhaps, Mark did NOT ignore Psalm 91, but presented it in a different light!   This is a rebroadcast of a podcast originally recorded September 8, 2022.

In the Old Testament, a watchman's job was to stand guard in a tower or on a city wall to detect any impending threat, like an approaching army or storm, and then alert the city inhabitants to take shelter or prepare to defend their city. The Old Testament prophets served as spiritual watchmen, warning people of sin and calling them to repentance. Whether providing physical or spiritual exhortation, a watchman was to be vigilant, alert, paying close attention to what was going on in the world around them.   As we near the end of Mark's gospel and our series, Upside Down Kingdom, we find Jesus warning and encouraging His disciples about what would happen in the future. Though they still didn't grasp the meaning of all He told them, He urged them to keep watch and remain faithful, even in the midst of confusion and persecution.  Come join us this last Sunday of summer at 11 AM. You'll find us online by clicking the "Join Us Sunday" button on our website or connect with us via our YouTube channel. I mean, this is it... the foundational idea behind the establishment of the United States. That we all get to live as we please, provided our living doesn't infringe upon someone else's living. But that's where the rub comes... when what I want, isn't what you want. When what I think is right, you believe is wrong. And it's a conflict that predates the Declaration of Independence. And we're still battling about rights today. We're in week 13 of our series, Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark and  Jesus is at the Temple in Jerusalem. This time, it's all about Mark's decision to stop attending church, the history behind his exodus, the regret that he has for the way in which he went about it, but also the respect and love he still has for his family, church culture, and other aspects that he misses about and can recognize in the church. Mark explains his feelings on why he thinks being out of the church works best for him and his family, but that he still respects others decisions to stay in the church. Devin asks Mark several questions regarding how he would have gone about things differently, and Mark also explains that people who leave the church just want to be understood and respected. I've always been a planner. I like routines and knowing what to expect. My dad however,  liked to change things up. I remember as a kid, driving home after being in town. From my perspective, there was a 'right' way to get home. But dad took a different route. "Where are we going?" I asked. "Home" he replied. "But this isn't the way home, " I said. He responded gently, "We're taking the scenic route." It wasn't the route I expected, but he was doing the driving.  The journey of being a Christ-follower is a lot like traveling the 'scenic route.' We think we know the way to get where we want to go, but God has a different path for us to travel. Devin then shares some stories he gathered from Marks siblings and father, and asks questions about his youth.Mark and Marianne share how they met each other at the BYU Jerusalem center before seeing each other again 5 years later after being set up by cousin Jenet, another one of the 99 cousins.The final subject was on the topic of "Doing Good" or "Affective Altruism". Mark and Marianne have a history of doing good in the world and helping their fellow man in any way that they can. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine." It's understandable that Jesus' disciples would struggle with the Father's plan, for the inbreaking of the Upside Down Kingdom into our world. Through Isaiah, God had told them His ways don't make sense. But shouldn't God's plan be better than imagined, not harder? Happier, richer, more beautiful? The struggle to make sense of it all - was real. And not just for the disciples in Jesus' day. It's still hard for us. “There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like home.” Dorothy Gale That classic line from the movie, The Wizard of Oz, has become iconic - representing the familiarity and comfort of home. As Dorothy wakes up in her own bed at the end of the movie, still murmuring those words, it reinforces the meaning of coming back to a place of safety, where you are known, loved and welcomed. Dorothy has had her grand adventure, but there's nothing better than coming home and sleeping in your own bed again.  This week, in our sermon series, Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark, we find Jesus returning home after some extended traveling. But his experience of coming home is nothing like Dorothy's. Sure, Nazareth is familiar, but not safe; and Jesus is certainly not welcomed. His family and friends aren't exactly impressed by the boy from the 'hood, now that he's all grown up. And His teaching definitely rubs them the wrong way. Just who does He think He is? Greetings in love, light, and wisdom as one.  July features a channeling session from back in May of 1994 by the members of Ashtar Command covering some very interesting subjects. Let's start with Tia, since our conversation takes up the majority of side one and begins with a dissertation on astral travel. This is the most basic form of astral travel she describes and is also the easiest to learn. One thing we can add to her method is to be sure not to cross any limbs. She answers the question about how to tell the difference on whether it is your imagination or really happening by offering a couple of different ways that involve double checking what you saw after the trip. She acknowledges that sometimes an artificial stimuli like a glass of wine may help with leaving the body but cautions that it can become a crutch if relied on too much. She next helps with a question on cat behavior due to some friction down here between two cats and up on the base between her and one of her daughter's cats. We discover that cats are telepathic between other cats. That leads into a discussion on the amazing circumstances that led her from having a near-death experience to lead data researcher on the base. That opens up a debate between destiny being pre-determined or decisions affecting outcomes are based on the odds of the circumstances ever happening. She wins the debate with no problem and plenty of logic which is when Karra takes her place as speaker. There's only a few minutes left on the side and what we do get into is the theme for the night which is vibrations and sound. We start with an experiment I had in mind of drinking a gem elixir while holding the stone that energized the water. She explains things from the atomic state of matter by reminding me that atoms have electrons so an electromagnetic field, though barely detectable, is created by all things. The other topic started is defining sentience but the tape ends.

Greetings once more in love, light, and wisdom as one.    Things get as deep as a forest as Karra has some knowledge about the collective consciousness of a forest and how even a single tree can reflect that consciousness. Her description is almost of living, breathing entities that we call forests. After that revelation, Omal is the night's main guest speaker because Korton had to leave during the first side and informs us of the meeting he too has to attend after channeling. What we do discuss is more revelations, but this time about crystals and gemstones. What we learn is that crystals work through the vibrations of living beings as well as astral beings, though the experience is different. The big news of the night is his knowledge of the topic of sound. He confirms the concept behind the story about a monastery being built with horns being blown. He demonstrates how vibrations affect matter and goes on to point out that horns directed a stone at the correct frequency will vibrate the stone and get it to move. We already knew the Great Pyramid had been built using that technique so it was no surprise to us to discover that the human race has been using sound wrong for all of these centuries due to not maintaining the knowledge of the technology used. He ends with a tip on meditating to see what comes to mind when listening to a Tibetan bowl being struck. That brings back Karra who have been wondering how she had managed to get Mark's eye open to look at his watch for the first time just like her sister is able to do. We continue on from where we left off with Omal about the effects of vibrations of the bowl being rung. We don't have much time because her sister has to channel so Kiri takes over to finish up the session. When it comes to control of Mark's body, she was even able to sample the wine that was being drunk for a change. She has a love of Sirian clarets so this was an experiment on comparisons through different bodies. We switch to the theme of the night about vibrations and her ability to interpret the vibrations in the air around her. She confirms she can feel the vibrations as waves such as following a conversation from long distance. One topic we don't have an answer for is how the effects of Mark's going solid on the base affect his physical body. Various options are offered but none are determined to be realistic in the end. We finish with her showing off her engineering skills by acknowledging that vibrations have the potential for healing, we just don't have the time to pursue them. Kiri also relates about Tia's life before she was introduced to Mark..

Do you remember life before cell phones? Or email or the internet? Did you ever use traveler's checks or money orders? How about cameras? Kodak Brownie? Instamatic? Polaroid? 35mm?  Change is inevitable. And often, it's beneficial! Yet many, if not most of us resist change, even when what's new is better than the old. Change is uncomfortable. In fact, if doing something new or trying a new way doesn't feel awkward at first, you're probably not doing it right!  Often, change feels like a loss. We like what we know, even if it's not working very well. As we pick up our study in Mark's gospel this week, we find Jesus continuing to ruffle the feathers of the religious leaders. Jesus' way of doing things breaks all the rules of their religious game. And they are not happy about it. The old ways are just fine, thank you very much.
