There's an old saying: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today. It's a useful way to think about business. Most of us can identify something we wish we had started earlier. Perhaps it's a better website, an online booking system, a stronger local presence or a clearer plan for attracting future customers. It would be nice if those things were already established—but they aren't. We can't change when we started. We can decide what we do next. What are you planting today? A tree takes years to mature. Changes within a business might take a few months or several years to bear fruit. Either way, the principle is the same: if you want the result in the future, you need to plant the seed now. That doesn't necessarily mean making a large investment. Some of the most valuable first steps cost very little: Taking time to think about where your market is heading Deciding what you want the business to look like in a few years Understanding how customers will discover and buy from you Identifying the systems and processes you'll need Choosing one practical improvement you can begin today Thinking is still free—and it may be one of the most productive things you do. Your customers are changing This matters particularly now, as artificial intelligence begins to reshape the way people work, search and buy. We may still be in the early stages, but change is coming. Businesses shouldn't necessarily fear it. Instead, they should consider how to position themselves to benefit from it. Whether you work in sales, manufacturing, plumbing, legal services or accountancy, it's worth asking: What will our customers expect from us? How will they find us? Which channels will we need to use? What could make buying from us quicker and easier? Where can technology improve the service we provide? Businesses that start considering these questions today will be better prepared when the market shifts. Build for convenience—and keep it local Customers increasingly expect to interact with businesses online. That makes a good website, e-commerce where appropriate and online booking increasingly important. At the same time, local presence still matters enormously. If you operate locally, you can understand that market, tailor your message and influence outcomes more effectively. An office in Horsham may need to market itself differently from an office in Leeds, even when both provide the same core service. The strongest approach combines convenient digital services with genuine local knowledge. Take the first step You don't need to transform the whole business today. You simply need to begin. Set aside some time, examine the options and decide what needs to be planted now. One thoughtful decision today could become a valuable part of your business in the months and years ahead. The best time to have started may have been years ago. The second-best time is today. Listen to the accompanying podcast episode for the full discussion. Ready to get some help on this. In this episode we invite the pioneering Geoffrey Cannon to reminisce about his stint as The Guardian's rock critic between 1968 and 1972. Commencing with the pop baptism of his first hearing Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers in a Horsham record booth in 1956, our guest talks us through his early work for New Society and The Listener — including his prescient reviews of albums by the Velvet Underground and the Mothers of Invention. He also explains how the 1969 Granada film Johnny Cash at San Quentin came about. Geoffrey then recounts how he pitched a weekly rock column to Guardian editor Peter Preston, and how he sustained it from late 1968 until 1972 while simultaneously editing the Radio Times. Clips from the late Pete Makowski's 2008 audio interview with Jack Bruce give us a chance to discuss the origins of Cream, and how the relative innocence of the '60s collapsed into the druggy decadence of the '70s. The conversation with Geoffrey concludes with our guest's post-rock adventures in writing about health and nutrition, plus his 2000 uprooting to Brazil and subsequent love of singers such as Belchior and Caetano Veloso. Finally, William and Jasper talk us out with their thoughts on articles about Ornette Coleman (1969), Plastic Bertrand (1978), Jools Holland (2004) and James Blake (2025). Many thanks to special guest Geoffrey Cannon. Pieces discussed: Pop Music Democratised, Mother's Rites: Freak Out/Absolutely Free, Aesthetics of Outrage, Johnny Cash at San Quentin was my idea, Jack Bruce audio, Plastic Bertrand, Jools Holland, Second opinion: Ornette Coleman and James Blake is taking on TikTok, Live Nation and 'Free Music'.

He regularly appears in the media and has been featured on the cover of Men's Fitness magazine. How Jason is today is a far cry from how he was when he first decided to improve his own health and fitness at the age of 50. Depressed, overwhelmed and lethargic, Jason was taking antidepressants and statins and had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a fatty liver. In January 2019, he saw a picture of Bilbo Baggins, the main character from The Hobbit films, running through the shire with the words ‘I'm going on an adventure'. This was a lightbulb moment for Jason who decided he wanted his own life to feel like an adventure and to have the energy to enjoy it.From that moment, he joined a gym, started going for walks, quit alcohol and began eating healthier. In just four months, he lost 25kg, reduced his body fat percentage from 28% to 12% and was able to come off all his medication. During his own fitness journey, he realized there was a huge lack of older personal trainers who were relatable and approachable for people over 40.This prompted him to give up his corporate job, qualify as a personal trainer and nutritional advisor and launch his business Fit in Midlife. How did an 18-year-old aristocrat become one of Britain's longest-serving politicians, spending 20 years in the same boring job before discovering his true calling at age 46? In the latest episode of History's Greatest Idiots, featuring Emily Jackson, one third of the Trauma Agora Podcast, we explore Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, the man known as "Lord Cupid" who survived an assassination attempt, conducted a decades-long affair with his friend's wife, and accidentally built one of the most remarkable political careers in British history. The Origin Story: Born in 1784 literally in Parliament's shadow, inheriting an Irish peerage at 18 that was considered "lesser" by British gentry. Educated at Harrow (one of seven PMs from there) and Edinburgh University. Described as having "the most faultless character" (the last time anyone would say that). The Reluctant Politician: Lost his first two campaigns, then paid £1,500 (£1 million in today's purchasing power) to become MP for Horsham at 22. Later represented Newtown with one condition: never visit the constituency. Democracy was more suggestion than requirement. The 20-Year Training Montage: Appointed to admiralty at 22, turned down Chancellor of the Exchequer at 25 (too young!), accepted Secretary at War instead. Spent a mind-numbing 20 years doing army finances under five Prime Ministers. Called "a brilliant young man wasting his talents, destined to remain a second-rater."The Assassination Attempt: Shot by Lieutenant Davies (ex-officer with PTSD) in 1818, survived with minor injury, then paid for Davies's legal defense and psychiatric care. But refused to intervene when poacher Charles Smith was executed on his estates in 1822.Lord Cupid: Earned his nickname through notorious affairs with Lady Jersey, Princess Dorothea Lieven, and dozens of others. The big one: 30-year affair with Emily Lamb, Countess Cowper, whose boring husband "sank into ill health." At least two of her five children were likely Palmerston's.Finally Getting Married: Lord Cowper died in 1837. Emily's children objected (he's too old and a womanizer!). Queen Victoria (age 18) thought people in their 50s were too old to marry. They married anyway in 1839 after 30 years of waiting. Extraordinarily happy marriage, described as "perpetual courtship."The Career Finally Begins: Resigned in 1828 after 20 years with Tories, gave brilliant foreign policy speech in 1829, switched to Whig party, appointed Foreign Secretary in 1830 at age 46. The training montage was over.Coming Up In Part Two: Sending 14 warships to collect £150, fighting two wars over opium, allegedly trying to 'seduce' Queen Victoria's lady-in-waiting in her own palace, becoming PM at 70, and dying in office at 80.https://www.patreon.com/HistorysGreatestIdiotshttps://www.instagram.com/historysgreatestidiotshttps://buymeacoffee.com/historysgreatestidiotsArtist: Sarah Cheyhttps://www.fiverr.com/sarahchey
