In this episode, Father Jim and Mike are back in the studio to explore what it truly means to live with courage in today's world—where uncertainty, noise, and fear often dominate the conversation. Courage isn't about fearlessness; it's about choosing conviction over comfort, truth over approval, and faith over doubt.

Our world is increasingly holiday focused, not Holy Day focused. The season of Christmas does not begin for the Church until Christmas Day. Father Jim encourages us to celebrate Advent for what it is, a time of preparation.Luke 21:25-28, 34-36Jesus said to his disciples:“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves.People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.Read the full scripture passage: bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/120124.cfmHeart to Heart Catholic Media MinistryEvangelize Seekers. “Discernment will always produce a great bouquet of God's glory.” Fr. Jim Kean joins Men of the Hearts hosts Fr. Craig and Fr. Drew to talk about his “cradle Catholic” childhood, serving alongside Mother Teresa, and appreciating the gifts of the priesthood. He encourages young men in discernment to “be not afraid,” because no matter their vocation, it is certain that God has something special in store for them.(0:25) Hosts Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. Drew Maybee introduce their guest this month, Father Jim Kean, who currently serves at St. Joseph the Worker in Lake Orion and St. John Fisher University Chapel in Auburn Hills. Father Jim shares about his summer, including a road trip through Ohio to the National Eucharistic Congress with one of our former guests, Fr. Brian Cokonougher. (7:57) Fr. Drew says he continues to settle in at his new assignment at Holy Family in Novi, where he has already been busy blessing houses and sharing dinner with parish families. Father Craig talks about attending the recent National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors in Minneapolis. (12:09) Fr. Jim talks about his early childhood in Emmett, where his family life centered around the local parish. He was an altar server for many years and also played basketball, football, and baseball. He recalls his father often responded to fights between the five siblings by taking the kids to Confession. (16:36) Fr. Jim first considered the priesthood at a high school party, when a friend asked him about the vocation. He continued on to college at St. Clair Community College, staying involved in his faith by reading about the lives of the saints, training to become a catechist, and lectoring at Mass. Still unsure of God's will for his life, Fr. Jim eventually moved to Miami, Florida to serve with a community following a contemplative approach to Mother Teresa's spirituality. (25:18) Fr. Jim continues his vocation story, sharing how he moved to Rome to serve directly alongside Mother Teresa. He reflects on how her humbling, palpable holiness helped him realize that holiness is universal. During this time, he matured in his exercise of the faith and discovered how living a Christlike example allowed him to feel “fully alive.” (34:16) Shortly after Fr. Jim returned home from Rome, his pastor invited him to a “come and see” weekend at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. (The seminary has three of these discernment weekends coming up in October, January, and March; listeners are encouraged to visit detroitpriestlyvocations.com for more information.) He officially entered seminary the next year and spent the next several years in formation and discernment, before finally being ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1997. (43:50) Fr. Jim shares what he considers to be some of the greatest gifts of the priesthood, including his congregational connection to his parishioners, standing in the person of Christ at the altar, and living in constant union with Jesus Christ. He recalls a moment one summer Sunday afternoon when he was struck by the holiness of the moment and vividly recalled feeling similarly as a child while honoring the Lord's Day with his family. (54:00) The episode concludes with Fr. Jim's advice to young men considering the priesthood. “Be not afraid. Be confident that the Lord has something special in store for you. Discernment will always produce a great bouquet of God's glory.” He then closes the episode with a prayer.

Friend of the show, Jesuit priest, author, and editor-at-large of America Media Father James Martin stopped by Father Dave's radio studio to discuss his recent meeting with Pope Francis, what it was like being at the Vatican with a number of famous comedians, and more. On Friday June 14, Pope Francis met with a number of comedians from multiple countries including Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, and Jim Gaffigan to name a few. The meeting, according to the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication, was intended to “establish a link” between the Catholic Church and such artists and aimed to "celebrate the beauty of human diversity ... [and] promote a message of peace, love and solidarity." LISTEN: Catholic Comedian Judy McDonald on Humor in Difficult Times Father James Martin is a consultor to the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication and explains to Father Dave how he became involved. “I knew about the comedians thing about two months before they met with the pope,” Father James says. “It was organized very quickly. They wanted to do it before the Synod in October. The Dicastery for Culture and Education put it together, and I helped them out with the U.S. comedians.” Father Dave asks, “So they are over there in Rome and they think to themselves, who knows comedians over in the states? Boom, Father Jim Martin.” “Pretty Much!,” Father Jim replies. Father Jim explains that the Dicastery for Culture and Education initially sent him a long list of over 50 comedians and humorists and asked him to narrow it down. “I talked to Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan, who I know, and I said help me pick the people who are really kind of the most respected among your peers because we had to narrow it down, and then the Vatican approved it.” Father Jim adds that there was no litmus test for the comedians who were picked. They did not have to be Catholic; it didn't matter if they had said negative things about Pope Francis or the Catholic Church. It was more about the biggest names who are most respected in their field. RELATED: Misheard During Mass: Parents Shared Despite the gathering's quick organization, Father Jim was very happy with how it all worked out. “One of the things that was very moving for me was everyone was really honored and happy to be there. Comedians can be a little cynical sometimes, but they were really happy to be at the Vatican meeting with the Pope and were all quite moved.” Father Jim also spoke with Father Dave about his one-on-one hour-long meeting with the pope while he was in Rome. “We talked about two things which I can say. We talked about his comments about gay priests, which were very much in the news, and we talked about the U.S. Church.” Father Jim continues, “We had a very open and honest conversation about his comments about gay priests and one of the things I wanted to share was at the comedians meeting, everybody went up and shook his [Pope Francis'] hand and I went up to him, and I posted a video of this, and I said, thank you very much. And he pulls me back and he says, ‘Thank you for that conversation the other day. I really appreciated it.' And I thought, now that's really unusual, like, thank you for a conversation that was difficult and challenging. He didn't have to say that. So I just think that's a sign of how open he is. He's learning. He listens.”

Summary In this conversation, Tim and Father Jim Gretzky discuss various topics related to Catholicism and the role of priests and bishops. They touch on issues such as the traditional Latin mass, Catholic teachings on abortion and IVF, and the role of priests in parish communities. They also discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the Catholic Church. Throughout the conversation, they highlight the importance of understanding the complexities of Catholicism and avoiding generalizations or false judgments. In this conversation, Tim and Father Jim analyze a speech given by NFL player Harrison Butker at Benedictine College. They discuss the recurring theme of longing for a mythological past and the connection between Christian nationalism and the desire to return to a privileged time. They also explore the traditional Catholic view of marriage and the importance of adhering to Catholic traditions. Father Jim provides insights into the Catholic perspective on issues such as birth control and the role of men in society. They highlight the need for nuance and understanding in discussions about faith and the dangers of fundamentalism. Takeaways Understanding the complexities of Catholicism is important to avoid generalizations or false judgments. The role of priests and bishops in the Catholic Church is multifaceted and requires a deep understanding of theology and pastoral care. The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for the Catholic Church, but decisions made by bishops and priests were often based on public health guidelines and the safety of parishioners. Recognizing the authority of bishops and priests is essential in understanding the role they play in leading the Church and administering the sacraments. This week, Mike and Father Jim talk about the differences between optimism and hope.
Father Jim is challenged by a woman: "Why don't you priests really heal anyone?" This gave him pause and inspiration for today's Gospel Study:A man with leprosy breaks societal convention and approaches Jesus. He kneels down and reaches out to Jesus physically and through faith: "If you wish, you can make me clean." Jesus responds, "I do will it. Be made clean." Mark 1:40-45A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,“If you wish, you can make me clean.”Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.”The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. Father Jim can hardly contain himself when asked about his mother. "She was my biggest supporter, she's one of the main reasons I became a priest." Renea loved all her children equally, so she said on a regular basis, but Father Jim is convinced he was her favorite. The only sibling to attend college, Father Jim completed his undergraduate and 2 graduate degrees from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ and currently is an adjunct professor at said school. He was loved by his doting mother who often protected him from his older brother's rough housing as you can imagine. Nana, his maternal grandmother, lived with the family many years and was also an integral part of Father Jim's cherished childhood. The two often listened to music together which is one of the many reasons my guest has such a love for music of the 40's, 50's and more.Often referred to as the Brady Bunch, Alice, their grandmother, mom and dad and the kids, boy girl/boy girl birth order, etc often spent evenings together watching tv and listening to music after enjoying a big family meal together. Those are the memories that Father Jim reflects upon the most with a sense of humor that abounds. "It wasn't always perfect, but I wouldn't change anything for the world. An avid piano player and singer, Father Jim performs regularly for his congregation and his community. Music is a huge part of his life and so much of that passion stems from his childhood, his nana and his mother, Renea.Just a few years prior to this interview, Father Jim had a massive heart attack while driving on the highway. And yet some how he miraculously survived the "widow maker"-he needed quintuple bypass surgery-five arteries were completely blocked. He professes that his faith had something to do with saving his life, giving him another chance to help those in need.Father Jim shares many wonderful stories of his priesthood and how proud his mother was of his vocation.
