This Lent, ponder the themes of justice, poverty, freedom, and love. The four New Testament Gospels aren't the same story, but they offer the same Resurrection hope. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John devote most of their story detailing Jesus' last week in Jerusalem, all highlighting Jesus' triumphant entry into the city, the suffering and humiliation of the cross, and the empty tomb come Sunday morning, but the stories they tell aren't quite the same. Each Gospel offers a different lens through which we understand Jesus' Passion. One portrait reveals Jesus to be in control, while another emphasizes his suffering. In one story Jesus offers hope to the thief on the cross, and in another Jesus only receives derision. These different perspectives aren't a reason to dismiss the Gospels; rather they reveal an abundant, diverse, and complementary picture of God's work in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In this episode, Dr. Nicholas J. Frederick discusses his article "It's Not the End of the World; It's Just the Apocalypse: The Book of Revelation in the Book of Mormon" co-authored with Dr. Joseph M. Spencer. Professor Frederick examines the intricate relationship between the Book of Mormon and the New Testament, particularly focusing on the Book of Revelation, by highlighting key textual allusions, type scenes, and quotations between the two. For example, he compares Nephi's vision as a variant of the visions recorded in Revelation, reinterpreting and recontextualizing its imagery and language. He details how it stretches the language and imagery of Revelation across a broader historical framework. Further, Dr. Frederick identifies three key revisions that expand our understanding: the reapplication of New Jerusalem imagery to describe Christ's terrestrial visits, the use of apocalyptic language to depict Christ's Crucifixion, and the equating of the great and abominable church with the great harlot of Revelation 17—18. These revisions emphasize the significance of Christ's earthly ministry and death, presenting a typological view of sacred history with pivotal moments of Christ's sojourn.    Publications:  “It's Not the End of the World; It's Just the Apocalypse: The Book of Revelation in the Book of Mormon” (BYU Studies Quarterly, 63.2, 2024)  “Section 77 and Book of Revelation Scholarship” (Religious Educator, 22.2, 2021)  “The Book of Mormon and the Academy” (Religious Educator, 21.2, 2020)  “The Use of the Old Testament in the New Testament Gospels” (in Prophets and Prophecies of the Old Testament, Religious Studies Center, 2017)    Click here to learn more about Nicholas J. Pontius Pilate is a relatively minor figure in the gospels of the New Testament, but one who plays a vital role as the Roman official in charge of Jesus' sentencing. Given that he's the face of Rome in the New Testament Gospels, he's presented in a surprisingly positive light! The same is true for his appearances in some other early Christian writings. To try and get to the bottom of exactly why the official representative of the big, bad Roman empire is presented as such a sympathetic figure, we're going to be taking a look at one of these non-canonical texts in a bit more detail.

We end our summer series by looking at one of the few stories found in all four of the New Testament Gospels. It's typically called the feeding of the 5000, but the text tells us there were many more than that. What do we learn from this story about the way we approach life's problems and challenges?

Sermons & Such - Haven Berkeley Faith Community

In today's teaching, Leah unpacks the complexities of the New Testament Gospels as part of the summer series, “Sacred Sources.” During seminary, many students face a pivotal moment when they realize the Bible's formation is more complex than previously imagined. This often leads to a crisis of faith, but it can also lead to a more mature and nuanced understanding of these sacred texts. In this teaching, Leah explores what the Gospels are, how they came to be, and their significance. While the Gospels aren't eyewitness accounts or direct transcripts of Jesus' words, they are powerful, faith-driven narratives that offer us a profound connection to Jesus. By understanding the historical and literary context of these texts, we can approach them with fresh eyes and deeper reverence, finding new ways to connect with the life and teachings of Jesus.Review Leah's notes here and listen to or watch the teaching below.

The title Jesus preferred to use for himself more than any other in the New Testament Gospels was “Son of Man.” According to the Bible Dictionary, this title was used approximately eighty times in the Gospels and used exclusively by the Savior to reference himself. “And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath” (Luke 6:5). But why would this simple descriptor be chosen as a majestic title of the Lord? In this episode Dr. Jared W. Ludlow, professor of ancient scripture and publications director of the Religious Studies Center, answers this question and provides greater insight to the eschatological context by discussing his article, “‘One Like the Son of Man Came with the Clouds of Heaven': The Context and Influence of the Son of Man Prophecy in Daniel 7.”  Professor Ludlow outlines the characteristics of apocalyptic literature within the book of Daniel, deconstructs the elements of the Son of Man prophecy, and connects both to Restoration scripture and the teachings of early Church leaders. In examining this work, we might learn ways to prepare and pray for the building up of God's eternal kingdom.     Publications: ·      “‘One Like the Son of Man Came with the Clouds of Heaven': The Context and Influence of the Son of Man Prophecy in Daniel 7” (in Religious Educator, 24.1, 2023) ·      “The Influence of the Figure of Moses in the Book of Mormon” (in They Shall Grow Together: The Bible in the Book of Mormon, Religious Studies Center, 2022) ·      “Enoch in the Old Testament and Beyond” (in From Creation to Sinai: The Old Testament through the Lens of the Restoration, Religious Studies Center, 2021) ·      “Alma's Loving Counsel to His Sons about the Law of Justice” (in Give Ear to My Words: Text and Context of Alma 36—42, Religious Studies Center, 2019)   Click here to learn more about Jared W. Despite its brevity, Mark presents a rich and profound exploration of Christ's life and teachings, offering us three key insights.First, Mark portrays Jesus as God's divine Son, emphasizing his humanity and divinity. He presents Jesus as a man of his time, experiencing human emotions and physical needs while simultaneously revealing him as divine through numerous references and supernatural events.Second, Mark underscores the unique, substitutionary purpose of Jesus's death. Contrary to some interpretations, Mark provides clear evidence of a theology of atonement. On at least two occasions, Jesus explicitly states the purpose of his death - a deliberate act of self-sacrifice for the salvation of humankind.Lastly, Mark presents Jesus's suffering and death as a model for discipleship. While acknowledging the uniqueness of Christ's sacrificial death, Mark also illustrates that Jesus serves as an example for faithful living in a fallen world. To sum up, Mark's Gospel provides us with a comprehensive narrative of a Savior who is both fully human and divine, who sacrifices his life for the people's sins, and whose path of suffering serves as a model for discipleship.

These episodes delve into the Gospel of Mark, the shortest of the four New Testament Gospels.

Who Killed Jesus? Obviously, the Romans ultimately crucified Jesus, but who were the few within Jerusalem that helped make the choice that Jesus, not Barabbas, should be the one crucified? It seems in the New Testament Gospels that Jesus had it out for the Pharisees and vice versa. However, Trevan Hatch, a Biblical Studies and Jewish Studies Scholar at Brigham Young University, says otherwise. We also cover the power dynamics of the major Jewish sects at the time of Jesus; the Sadducees, Pharisees, and Essenes, as well as Jesus' interactions with the former two groups.   Website - www.cwicmedia.com

One of the most intriguing non-canonical Gospels to be discovered in modern times is the Gospel of Peter. Unlike the New Testament Gospels, which were written anonymously (only later to be given the titles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), this Gospel actually claims to be written by an apostle, Jesus' own right-hand man, Peter. The account we have is only fragmentary, an alternative version of Jesus' trial, death, and resurrection. And what an account it is, involving an actual record of Jesus emerging from his tomb at his resurrection, as tall as a mountain, followed, from the tomb by a walking-talking cross. What is this fascinating account really all about, and why did someone write it, falsely claiming to be the disciple Peter?

We conclude our look at the Resurrection Appearances of Jesus, as part of the Justin Martyr Series. Host Chris Palmero looks at the common elements of these legends from the point at which Jesus appears to his disciples, all the way up to his ascension at the end. The versions of the Resurrection as told by Celsus, the ancient pagan critic of Christianity, as well as the lost book called the Preaching of Peter, are also explored. Finally, Justin Martyr's version of the Resurrection story is examined, to see whether he is in fact using the New Testament Gospels as his source.Anyone who listens to this episode of BORN IN THE SECOND CENTURY can learn about the earliest evidence for Christians in the city of Rome; about why Jesus and the disciples are sometimes said to eat a meal during the Resurrection Appearance; about why Jesus invites the disciples to touch him in some stories; about how Celsus' story of the Resurrection clashes with that of the New Testament; about the Preaching of Peter and its possible links to Mark's Gospel; and about the true source of Justin's strange "account" of the Resurrection.Opening reading: the Roman poet Martial, from the turn of the second century, grumbles about his neighbor in the manner of Annette Benning from American Beauty.Support the showPatreon: www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcenturyWebsite: facebook.com/BornInTheSecondCenturyE-mail: secondcenturypodcast@gmail.comMusic: Pompeii Gray on Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud

When BYU professor Eric Huntsman was growing up, he spent time among Catholics in Pittsburgh and Baptists in Alabama and came to love the different ways other Christian denominations worshiped Jesus. And one of his favorite ways that other Christians worshiped was during Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter Sunday. Over the years, Eric began incorporating many Holy Week traditions into his spiritual practice and found it helped him connect more deeply with the Savior and his atoning sacrifice. To help other Latter-day Saints who may be interested in learning more about Holy Week and developing ways of celebrating it, Eric, along with co-author Trevan Hatch, has recently published a book called Greater Love Hath No Man: A Latter-day Saint Guide to Celebrating the Easter Season. In today's conversation, Zach Davis spoke with Eric about his journey as a disciple and scholar of Jesus, what traditional Holy Week commemoration looks like, and how Easter is a time when we can connect with our fellow Christian brothers and sisters.Eric Huntsman is a professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU. In April of 2023, Eric began a two and a half year appointment of the BYU Jerusalem Studies Program, from where he joined us for this conversation. After initially researching Roman history, Eric's scholarly efforts have focused on the life and ministry of Jesus in the New Testament Gospels, especially the Gospel of John.

A high level of expectancy fills the early pages and events of the New Testament Gospels. Herod, the Magi, Anna, Simeon, and "all of Jerusalem"—to name but a few—were all eager and expecting God to act. Thanks in part to the prophecies in Daniel and other prophets, Jerusalem was on edge before and after Jesus' birth. As we say goodbye to 2022 and welcome 2023, Christians need to be reminded that God is always "doing something," and to keep our own high level of expectancy and hope.
