By: David M. Foster, CFP®, CAP®Hello listeners, and welcome to the fourth episode of the Gateway Giving Podcast. My guest today is Courtney Noto, the Chief Development Officer for Marygrove. There are lot of debates in our society about who is deserving of help, and I hope to be able to explore that topic in future episodes of this podcast, but the good news is that pretty much everyone agrees that kids are innocent and blameless for their own circumstances. That's part of the reason it's so heartbreaking to see kids who have the deck stacked against them in so many ways. Whether it's something as horrifying as having physically abusive parents, or something as simple as lack of access to laundry facilities to be able to wear clean clothes to school every day, Marygrove exists to create an environment where kids focus on thriving, instead of just surviving. Often called the “hidden gem of Florissant” (and they'd like to eliminate the “hidden” part), Marygrove was founded in 1849 to take care of neglected and abandoned girls, but in the present day, they care for girls and boys from birth to age 21. On any given day, they will have around 200 kids in their care, but over the course of a typical year, they will impact the lives of roughly 1,000 kids through the various programs and services they offer. As a parent, I would do just about anything for my kids, and I want to live in a world where every kid has a support system like the one I had growing up and like the one my kids have today. If you'd like to learn more about what you can do to help create that environment for these kids and kids like them, then please listen to and enjoy my interview with Courtney Noto.Courtney Noto and Marygrove are not affiliated with nor endorsed by LPL Financial, Gateway Wealth Management, or Cornerstone Wealth Management. This week, Daniel Howes says the year-end closure of Marygrove College after 92 years in Detroit doesn’t mean the end of education on its Gothic campus. No, two years of planning now ensure the 53-acre site will once again educate Detroiters, as “The School @ Marygrove” enrolls 120 ninth graders this fall and the University of Michigan launches a teacher residency program patterned after U.S. medical schools. The upshot: Marygrove the place is getting a second act, even as the financial rescue of the school itself failed.
Episode 23 - MarygroveRose Crofford, Chief Operating OfficerKelly Peplinski, Director of Intensive NeedsMike Baer, Director of Transitional and Independent Living 2705 Mullanphy LaneFlorissant, MO 63031 (314)837-1702www.marygrovechildren.org Marygrove has a rich history of more than 165 years caring for children, teens and young adults, offering a safe and healing environment for its residents. The children and adolescents who are placed at Marygrove have often been through multiple, failed placements in other residential facilities or foster homes. Many come from abusive, violent and severely disruptive family situations; some come from failed adoptions; and, in a few instances, children are discharged from psychiatric hospitals directly to Marygrove. Most of the residents are diagnosed with behavioral and psychiatric disorders as a result of abuse and neglect. Without Marygrove’s services, these children and adolescents would face a future living in a much more restrictive environment. The children and young Marygrove Arial revised adults at Marygrove live and grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, and they have an opportunity to heal in a stable, family-like setting. Professional caregivers provide structure while therapists provide an individualized treatment program and counseling to help each child overcome personal obstacles and establish responsible, attainable goals for the short and long-term future. Marygrove is one of the largest therapeutic residential treatment programs in Missouri and is a new beginning for the 200 children and young adults served each day. Many arrive at Marygrove’s doors with immediate needs that include clean clothes, food and medical treatment. They receive all these things in addition to a safe haven and the nurturing and care of round-the-clock staff and therapeutic treatment from licensed, Masters-level therapists. Today, through its broad spectrum of residential and community-based programming, including therapeutic residential treatment and foster care, transitional and independent living programs, crisis care, education and recreational therapy, family counseling, parenting education and mentoring Marygrove enriches the lives of over 1,000 young people each year. As part of the Archdiocese of St. Louis we participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal.
This week, Howes explains how the Kresge Foundation and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary are collaborating to rescue Marygrove College from financial collapse. The goal: to transform the 91-year-old school, opened by the sisters in the heart of Detroit, into a model of urban education and community redevelopment.
