How are energy supply chains changing as electricity demand surges? A special episode from the ACORE Policy Forum in Washington

The Energy Gang

ACORE, the power and renewables industry group, is this week hosting its annual Policy Forum in Washinton DC. It's an event where industry leaders and experts discuss how the changing landscape of US energy policy is shaping infrastructure investment, the growth of electricity supply, and the affordability of power. Host Ed Crooks is recording two special episodes from the forum. This first show is focused on the US government's attempts to build up a domestic supply chain for renewables and other energy equipment. Ed speaks with Dr Sarah Kapnick, who is the global head of Climate Advisory at JP Morgan, and Peter Toomey, the Chief Development Officer at Cypress Creek Renewables, which is one of the country's leading energy developers. They discuss how supply chains and infrastructure for renewable energy are evolving. Demand for electricity is booming, but supply chains are under pressure. Volatile government support creates uncertainty for developers and suppliers. The “one big beautiful bill” (OB3) last year, which scrapped tax credits for wind and solar power, created “cliffs” in support for projects as the deadlines for eligibility are passed. That creates challenges for equipment manufacturers thinking about investing in new production capacity in the US. The Trump administration, like the Biden administration before it, faces a tension between its objectives of building up US manufacturing, accelerating US electricity supply growth, and making consumers' power bills more affordable. The ultimate question is whether the US can build resilient, competitive, domestic energy supply chains while balancing affordability, energy security, and surging demand from AI. Plus, Ed talks to Alice Lin, a senior tax advisor at the Natural Resource Defense council who worked on the Biden administration's move to increase tax credits for low-carbon energy with the Inflation Reduction Act. They debate the realities of clean energy tax incentives, and in particular the latest changes to the FEOC (Foreign Entities of Concern) rules. The aim is to stop companies from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran from benefiting from US tax credits. But even though the US Treasury recently published guidance on how it will apply the rules from the legislation last year, it is still not entirely clear what effect they will have. Developers, manufacturers and investors are still cautiously feeling their way. This week on the podcast, our guest is Brandon Moffatt, Chief Development Officer at StormFisher Hydrogen. StormFisher Hydrogen develops projects that repurpose energy, water, and power, with a focus on green hydrogen and e-fuels across the North American market. The company is currently advancing a low-carbon methanol project in Varennes, Quebec. The conversation begins with an overview of green hydrogen–derived products, including e-methane, e-methanol, and green ammonia. Brandon explains why e-methanol is emerging as a leading end-use for green-hydrogen-derived fuels, particularly for marine shipping and aviation. The discussion then turns to Canada's competitive advantages in producing e-fuels, including access to low-carbon grid electricity in Quebec, Manitoba, and British Columbia, as well as the Canadian Investment Tax Credits (ITCs). With the United States rolling back support for green hydrogen in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) last summer, Brandon notes that Canada currently holds a policy advantage in North America. However, global competition remains strong, particularly from India, China, and the Middle East, where cost structures are advantaged. For Canada to remain globally competitive in green hydrogen-derived products, Brandon outlines several changes he believes are needed to Canada's existing ITC framework. These include:Allowing access to the full green hydrogen ITC when grid power is more than 90% non-emitting Extending eligibility to downstream equipment, including e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, consistent with how ammonia is treated  Allowing the use of carbon dioxide in fuel production to qualify for the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) ITCThe episode concludes with a deeper dive into the Varennes project, including the potential for local job creation and the anticipated timing for a final investment decision and first production. Content referenced in this podcast:S&P Canadian Electric Car Insights to Q3 2025 (Dec 2025) StormFisher Hydrogen's website Learn more about StormFisher's low-carbon methanol project in Varennes, Quebec Note, the ARC Energy Funds are an investor in StormFisher Hydrogen. Send us a textRetired Marine Corps fighter pilot, Top Gun instructor, and leadership consultant Dave Berke joins Joe for an honest conversation about ego, responsibility, and what it truly means to lead—both in the arena of combat and in everyday life.As the bestselling author of The Need to Lead, Dave pulls back the curtain on the high-pressure world of fighter aviation, the chaos of ground combat in Ramadi, and the quiet challenges of becoming a better leader at home.  He reveals how his biggest breakthroughs came not from triumphs, but from failure—from dogfights he should have won, leadership roles he wasn't ready for, and moments where ego clouded judgment. In this episode, Joe and Dave also explore:Why ego is the most dangerous threat to good leadership—and how to recognize the voice that “loves you to death”How Top Gun actually works (and why the instructors are more humble than Hollywood suggests)Lessons from Ramadi—operating in chaos, fighting self-doubt, and learning fast under pressureWhy leaders fail when they cling to control instead of developing othersThe danger of complacency—and how one “guaranteed win” dogfight changed Dave's approach to preparationPreparing for your own departure as a leader—why good leadership outlasts the leaderThe hard emotional work of transition and why believing in your next mission matters more than salary, title, or prestigeWhether you're leading in uniform, managing a team, or navigating a major life transition, this episode offers hard-earned wisdom on how to stay grounded, remain teachable, and build teams capable of enduring whatever comes next.Dave Berke is a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer, former TOPGUN Instructor, and now the Chief Development Officer and a leadership instructor at Echelon Front. As an F/A-18 pilot, he deployed twice from the USS John C. Stennis in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Interview with Chad Peters, President & CEO of Ridgeline Minerals Corp. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/partnership-driven-mining-exploration-reducing-risk-maximizing-returns-8307Recording date: 21st November 2025Ridgeline Minerals (TSXV:RDG) presents investors with an unusual proposition: leveraged exposure to a Nevada carbonate replacement deposit discovery that South32 publicly compares to its $2 billion Taylor acquisition, yet trades at valuations suggesting significant market scepticism. Understanding this disconnect requires examining both the technical merits of the Selena discovery and the strategic value of Ridgeline's partner-funded business model. The company's second drill hole at Selena intersected multiple massive sulphide horizons including 17 metres of 6% zinc with 30-40 g/t silver plus copper, gold, and antimony credits. Using metallurgical recovery rates from South32's Taylor feasibility study (79-95% across all metals), this intercept grades approximately 30% higher on a metal equivalent basis than Taylor's resource grade. The hole validated a 2-kilometre-long magnetotelluric anomaly comparable in scale and intensity to Taylor, which South32 is spending US$3 billion to develop as one of the world's largest silver-lead-zinc deposits.South32's Chief Development Officer publicly congratulated Ridgeline on the discovery and compared it to Taylor's early days, providing external validation from a major miner with global CRD expertise. The partnership structure requires South32 to spend US$10 million over five years to earn 60% of Selena, with Ridgeline earning 10% of every dollar spent. An optional phase two allows South32 to spend another US$10 million over three years to reach 80%, automatically triggering Ridgeline's fully carried interest to commercial production on the remaining 20% stake.CEO Chad Peters emphasised the significance: "Taylor to build is publicly announced US$3 billion. So what is our 20% free carry worth? US$600 million - that's US$600 million less of dilution to Ridgeline shareholders." Even if South32 stops at 60% ownership, Peters noted that "if we own 40% of what might be a world-class CRD, we can fund that all day long" through project financing or third-party investment. The market's muted response to technically strong drill results reflects the challenge of valuing polymetallic deposits where zinc, silver, copper, gold, antimony, and lead contribute simultaneously to economics. Peters acknowledged this communication difficulty, noting that antimony alone - averaging 0.1% in the discovery hole - "is five times as valuable as copper," making that byproduct credit equivalent to 0.5% copper over 17 metres. For investors capable of conducting independent metallurgical and economic analysis, this complexity may create information arbitrage opportunities.Ridgeline's business model eliminates near-term financing pressure through US$60 million in total partner commitments across three Nevada projects with South32 and Nevada Gold Mines. The company anticipates approximately US$12 million in partner-funded exploration for 2026, the largest budget in its history, whilst requiring no equity financing to advance core projects. With drill hole 54 testing the heart of the Selena magnetotelluric target (results expected January 2026), pending Swift project assays, and only 18 months elapsed in South32's five-year phase one earn-in, the company sits at maximum exploration leverage where each subsequent hole materially impacts valuation. The investment thesis centres on whether South32's demonstrable commitment and public comparison to Taylor signals world-class potential that the market has failed to recognise, or whether current valuations appropriately reflect the substantial execution risk inherent in translating one discovery hole into a viable mining operation. Investors with appropriate risk tolerance and capability to evaluate complex polymetallic deposit economics may find current entry points attractive ahead of multiple near-term catalysts, whilst recognising that CRD discoveries require 7-10 years minimum from discovery to production and significant additional drilling to validate system scale and grade continuity.View Ridgeline Minerals' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/ridgeline-mineralsSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Rerun: Water Batteries, with Erik Steimle

Pumped Storage Hydropower as a Climate SolutionPumped storage hydropower, also known as water batteries, are often used as a means to store excess renewable energy. For example, solar and wind may generate more energy than is needed during certain times of the day and less than what is needed at other times.  As a result, water batteries are extremely useful as a way to store and release energy during peak demand periods or when renewable sources are unavailable (i.e, when the sun is down). This form of energy storage is used in many places across the country, and across the world, including Tennessee, Kentucky, and San Diego. Current and Future Use of Pumped Storage HydropowerIn San Diego County, a proposed pumped storage hydropower project would connect a lake to large underground pipes which will “connect this lake to a new reservoir… 1100 feet higher in elevation” so that “when the sun is high in the sky, California's abundant solar power will pump water into that upper reservoir.” When the sun is down, the water would be released to the lower lake, generating around ”500 megawatts of electricity for up to eight hours” which is “enough to power 130,000 typical homes.”At Tennessee's Raccoon Mountain, TVA stores the excess energy as gravitational potential energy and produces about “1700 megawatts of electricity” when in demand during the day. It takes extremely long for these projects to get approved because the investment is “more than 2 billion dollars for a large plant”.  The project consists of three components: a lower reservoir “bounded by a 62 meter high dam” and “replenished as need to make up for evaporation;” an underground powerhouse which is “a 137-meter-long cavern” housing “three pump turbines;” and an upper reservoir which “would be some 600 meters across and bounded by a 53 meter high dam.”All currently operating pumped storage hydropower projects in the U.S. are “open-loop” facilities, meaning the lower reservoir is a natural water source such as a lake or river. This is the case with the San Diego and Racoon Mountain projects. In contrast, “closed-loop” pumped storage is built offstream and operates independently of natural waterways. For example, at a proposed pumped storage facility in Kentucky, an old coal mine is being repurposed to be used as a water battery. This land has “hosted mining for at least 70 years” and this “project would deliver up to 287 megawatts of power for up to 8 hours, giving it more storage in the tank than the biggest lithium battery plants built thus far”. Closed-loop pumped storage is generally viewed more favorably than open-loop systems by many environmental groups, tribes, and modern hydropower developers because it avoids continuous interaction with natural waterways and can reduce impacts on fish and river ecosystems.Benefits of Water BatteriesWater batteries are incredibly useful for long-duration energy storage and can help balance fluctuations in renewable energy sources like solar and wind by providing power during peak demand periods. For instance, in San Diego, “the San Vincente project would store roughly as much electricity as batteries in 50,000 of Tesla's long range Model 3 cars” and does not need materials like cobalt and lithium which are not only hard to find but create a lot of e-waste (and side effects with mining). Moreover, these projects fuel the economy and can create an abundance of construction jobs.Challenges of ImplementationPumped hydropower requires a lot of land, and flooding impacts habitat, and in some cases areas protected by indigenous tribes. The land and local ecosystem impacts can be very substantial. Moreover, water batteries require significant elevation difference between reservoirs to be effective so there are often geographic limitations to deployment. It can be extremely challenging to find places to build water batteries because they require specific topography as well as impacting the surrounding landscape. On top of this, these “facilities are expensive to build and take years to develop”. However, once they are in full structural integrity, they “store energy for far longer than lithium-ion batteries… and they last for many decades with minimal deterioration.”Erik Steimle emphasizes that pumped hydropower/water batteries are a great way to generate energy in a more sustainable manner, however, he acknowledges that there are some downfalls of it. For example, pumped hydropower/water batteries must undergo extensive regulatory practices involving federal agencies that other types of energy storage and renewables do not, posing a barrier to widespread accessibility. Another benefit is the durability of this equipment, which can be useful for hundreds of years.About our guestErik Steimle is the Chief Development Officer of Rye Development (tapped by DOE for the Kentucky project) and he is on the board of directors of the National Hydropower Association. Moreover, he has over twenty years of management experience in developing large-infrastructure renewable energy projects (especially in regards to hydropower). ResourcesNPR: ‘Water batteries' could store solar and wind power for when it's neededCanary Media: This Kentucky Coal mine could transform into pumped-hydro grid storageScience: How giant ‘water batteries' could make green power reliable | Science | AAASStanford University: UnCommon DialogueFor a transcript, please visit: https://climatebreak.org/water-batteries-with-erik-steimle/.

Notes: July 2001: Plans Don't Survive Contact - Dave's Top Gun graduation exercise as flight lead. Wingman yells, "Showtime one-one break right!" - an F-5 snuck into formation. Dave was staring at the radar instead of looking out, had to fall out of formation, and ended up at the back instead of leading from the front. Mission successful, but nothing like he planned. Dave: "The outcome was still really good... except it was nothing like I thought it was going to be." Lesson: You're planning for the success of the outcome, not how you're going to do it. The most important attribute in a leader is humility. To be effective, you must be able to listen, learn, be flexible, and admit you're wrong sometimes. One of the biggest issues they deal with when working with leaders is ego and/or the inability to be humble. As leaders, we need to be self-aware enough to realize when our ego is getting the best of us. And surrounding ourselves with people who will help us know when that is happening as well. Be Fluid with Plans, Deliberate with Outcomes - Be really fluid and loose with plans, but deliberate about aligning the team on outcomes. Dave grew up as a control freak, OCD planner. Dave: "In life, it's just not how life works... If you can align on the mission and outcome, and you are very open-minded that there are a lot of different ways to get there, you're far more likely to be successful." The military saying, "The enemy gets a vote." Ryan's quarterback coach after an interception: "He's on scholarship too, you know?" Process: How You Create It Matters Most - Process is important, but how you create it matters most. If you agree on the outcome, the conversation should be less about agreement, more about "When you talk about step one, what are you thinking? How does this lead to step two?" The process has to be organic. When you create it, you're more likely to maneuver around challenges. Book Dedication: Chris and Kat - Book dedicated to Corporal Chris Leon and his mother, Kat. Chris was a radio operator on Dave's 13-man Anglo team. June 20, 2006, Chris was killed by an enemy sniper in Iraq - first Anglican Marine killed there. Dave's son is Matthew Leon Burke - took Chris's last name. Chris's mom Kat is Aunt Kat to Dave's family. Dave: "I always say I really deep down wish I didn't know Kat, because that would've meant Chris came home and life just went on. But that's not what happened." Chris taught bravery. Kat taught strength. Top Gun Reality: It's About the Team - 1986 Top Gun most impactful movie on Dave's life at 14. But the movie depicts a lone wolf. Marine Corps teaches: Your contribution to the team matters most. A really good pilot who's self-centered will do more damage than a slightly less capable pilot who's a real team player. Dave: "If there's ever a team sport, it's going into combat... It's not about you. It's about the team." Trust: Action, Not Description - Echelon codifies relationships: Trust, respect, listening, influence. Trust is the cornerstone. Dave: "If you don't trust me, I could be good at so many things. If there is a trust gap, there's going to be a problem in the relationship and team." Trust is action you take.  Ego: The Universal Challenge - When Echelon works with companies, challenges are almost always connected to ego. Dave: "Our egos tend to wreak havoc at each level of organization." From birth, the ego drives us down the wrong path. When debating plans, ego says, "You're right, he's wrong." Building good leadership is managing egos. Dave: "Humility is the most important attribute in a leader. All the attributes, humility is number one, and we don't waffle on that." Humility Enables Everything Else - Dave worked with the biggest, toughest SEALs. Attribute most critical to success: humility. Ability to listen, learn, be flexible, change, admit you're wrong, and go with someone else's plan. It even affects fitness. Humility touches everything. Doesn't diminish other attributes, but allows you to strengthen them.  Teaching Humility: Subordinate Your Ego - You can't tell someone with a big ego to be humble. Dave: "The biggest challenge with someone else's ego is not their ego. It's your ego's response to it." Most counterintuitive thing: If you clash with Ryan, Dave has to subordinate his ego to Ryan's. Lower your ego: "Hey Ryan, I've been pushing back hard, I realize I'm not listening." Natural reaction: Ryan's ego starts to drop. Over time, collaborate more. You connect success to the ability to control the ego. Dave: "Humility is the measurement of how much control you have over your ego." What you give is usually what you get. It's reciprocal. Care About Team More Than Yourself - When your people see you working hard to clear paths or block an egomaniac boss, they'll run through walls for you. Outcome of a good relationship: You care about the team, the team cares about you. That selfless act shows you care about them more than yourself. Dave: "That's how you show that you care about them more than yourself, and that's what a leader's job is, to care about the team more than you care about yourself. That's parenting, that's marriage." Extreme Ownership - Book Extreme Ownership changed Dave's understanding. When you take ownership, take ownership of everything. Caveat: Not things you literally don't control. But you have ownership over everything, even just how you react. After Chris was killed, Dave said, "That's war, nothing we can do." Problem: When he embraced it wasn't his responsibility, it meant he didn't have as much to change. Should have asked: "What is everything we can do to make sure this doesn't happen again?" The tendency is to undershoot ownership. Try to take it to the extreme. If you can take ownership of everything you can control, you get more influence over the outcome. Detachment: A Superpower - Dave: "Detachment is a superpower" - (1) almost nobody can do it, and (2) if you can, it's massively influential. Detachment is being in control of emotions. When overwhelmed with priorities and pressures, you tend to get emotional. When you react emotionally, you make bad decisions. Learn the skill of detaching - not to be devoid of emotion (we're human), but don't let emotions dictate. Get Away from Problems to See What's Causing It - When a problem occurs at work, you tend to focus on it, go into it. It seems good but is often wrong. You should get away from it, detach. Getting away lets you look around and see what's really causing it. Military example: The enemy is shooting at you; the tendency is to focus on that. Usually bad because they're hoping you do - then they send a flanking maneuver. If you detach, step back, you'll see the flanking maneuver coming. Be able to see the future - that's the superpower.  Know Your Red Flags - Intervene Early - You have to understand where you are escalating your emotions. Know your personal red flags. Most people don't go zero to 100. Long day, flight delayed, bad meeting - little things tick up, so zero is actually 4 or 5, which means dirty dishes put you to 7. When Dave gets frustrated, traps tighten up. Some people's nose turns red. If you're at level 8 and someone says, "calm down," it makes it worse. But if at level 1 or 2 and you intervene, you're in control. What an adult does: "I'm an emotional guy, but I have awareness of where I am. If I'm a 4, I gotta intervene then." If at level 10, detaching is not gonna happen. That's the difference between kids and adults. Dave: "You are much more likely to have a hard time controlling your emotions, ironically, with people you care about the most." Quotes: "You're planning for the success of the outcome, not how you're going to go about doing that, because things get in the way."  "Humility is the most important attribute in a leader. All the attributes. Humility is number one, and we don't waffle on that."  "The biggest challenge with someone else's ego is not their ego. It's your ego's response to it."  "Detachment is a superpower."  "You are much more likely to have a hard time controlling your emotions, ironically, with people you care about the most." 01:16 Introducing Dave Burke 02:21 Dave Burke's Top Gun Experience 05:23 Lessons Learned from Military to Everyday Life 07:56 The Importance of Flexibility in Leadership 13:07 The Need to Lead: Dedication and Personal Stories 16:58 The Realities of Teamwork in Combat and Business 21:03 Building Trust and Relationships in Teams 26:04 The Role of Humility in Effective Leadership 31:03 Understanding Ego and Humility 31:50 Subordinating Your Ego 33:38 Challenges of Teaching Humility 34:07 Personal Experiences with Ego 39:20 The Power of Ownership 42:57 Detachment as a Superpower 52:58 Advice for Young Leaders 57:26 Conclusion and Key Takeaways

Juliann Edwards is Chief Development Officer at The Nuclear Company. The United States has 93 operating nuclear reactors providing about 20% of the nation's electricity. After decades without new builds, Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in Georgia finally came online—despite cost overruns and delays that nearly derailed the project. Meanwhile, China has dozens of reactors under construction and is on pace to surpass the U.S. as the world's nuclear leader by 2030.At the same time, an energy-demand gap—driven by AI data centers, reshoring of manufacturing, and widespread electrification—has put nuclear back in the conversation. Hyperscalers like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are scrambling for clean, reliable baseload power. The Nuclear Company believes it can crack what's held nuclear back in America. Rather than inventing new reactor designs, they're using proven models like the AP1000 and targeting “the other 88%” of costs—construction, financing, and project management. Their approach is fleet-scale deployment: building multiple reactors at once to drive down costs through repetition and shared learning. They're also partnering with Palantir to build an AI-powered operating system to orchestrate these projects.Beyond her role at The Nuclear Company, Juliann chairs U.S. Women in Nuclear. With 15 years in the industry—from steel commodities to the 2000s nuclear renaissance and the decommissioning wave—she's seen the cycles and why today's interest feels different.MCJ is a multiple-time investor in The Nuclear Company through our venture funds.Episode recorded on Aug 7, 2025 (Published on Oct 7, 2025)In this episode, we cover: [2:57] Juliann's background and path to nuclear[05:30] Women in Nuclear's mission and growth[06:38] Lessons from a six‑state nuclear bus tour[08:22] NIMBY sentiment shifting toward nuclear acceptance[10:25] U.S. build history and why it stalled[18:06] What went wrong and right at Vogtle[24:05] Nuclear reactor ~12% of cost; 88% is everything else[25:42] Workforce gaps and training pipelines[26:40] An overview of nuclear project types[32:59] Timelines: restarts soon; new builds in years[34:42] TNC's executive makeup[37:40] The role of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission[40:35] Palantir and TNC's newly announced partnership[48:35] Solving the nuclear waste problem[50:30] Juliann's predictions for the future of nuclear[53:10] Hyperscalers' evolving nuclear appetite Enjoyed this episode? Justin Murff is one of those guys I turn to when I want to sort out what is going on in the world. He has been, or is currently, an Anglican priest, a media executive, and advocate for religious freedom, a former Southern Baptist pastor, and a whole lot more. His innovative work has reshaped how faith communities engage unreached or poorly reached people groups in the digital age.   Currently, He is the Canon for Global Affairs to the General Secretary of GAFCON, the global fellowship of confessing Anglicans, which is a network of conservative Anglican provinces from around the world. He is also Canon for the Middle East and North Africa for ACNA, the Anglican Church in North America. On point for our conversation today, Justin also leads the Digital Church Network, helping to create opportunities for people in restricted nations to connect with the body of Christ. In past lives he has been the Chief Development Officer for the Parental Rights Foundation, and official envoy to the Vatican for the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN). His passion for bridging cultural divides led him to serve as Executive Director of the MENA Collective, a digital initiative that empowered over 150 ministries across the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan. I had this conversation with Justin via zoom. He was at his home in Greenville, South Carolina. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.
