S6E97 -Keeping the Flame: Marcia Black on Black Women, Archives, and the Legacy of Black Detroit

"If we don't tell our stories, who will? And if they do, will they tell it right?" — This question grounds the work of Marcia Black, a powerful cultural steward who's leading the charge at Black Bottom Archives, celebrating 10 years of preserving and honoring Black Detroit's legacy. In this Detroit is Different podcast, Marcia shares how her passion was sparked by early roots in environmental justice organizing through EMEAC, where she witnessed the brilliance and resilience of Black women leading on the frontlines. That experience lit a fire, and inspired by pioneers like PG Watkins and Camille Johnson, Marcia embraced the responsibility of archiving Black life, especially the voices of Black women too often erased from historical narratives. From growing up between Detroit and Duval County, Florida, her journey is a mosaic of Black Southern and Midwestern cultural memory. Guided by the radical education at Marygrove College and the example of her entrepreneurial, Catholic, beauty-salon-owning, computer-working, reverend grandmother, Marcia now curates community through exhibits, storytelling, and cultural programming. “Black women have always been the keepers of the flame,” she says, and her work ensures that flame continues to burn bright—one story, one installation, one memory at a time. There are only two political stories on our agenda this week, both from the top of the ballot: the “will he or won't he” waiting about President Biden, and the GOP National Convention which they branded as a unifying event but, in reality, only united the dominant MAGA movement while horrifying just about everyone else. Key to the discussion over the Democratic ticket: polls, polls, polls. Links to some of the most credible: Public Policy Poll: Michigan & Pennsylvania Most say Biden should withdraw from the Presidential race - AP-NORC YouGov Michigan Senate Poll - July 4-12 YouGov Poll - Harris for President, Issues Blue Labs Polling of Alternative nominees - Kelly, Moore, Shapiro, Whitmer The Republican convention was a four-day celebration of lies, half-truths and grievances in the style of their Lord and Savior, would-be Dictator-on-Day-One Donald. Fact-checkers worked overtime to chronicle the most outrageous denials of reality, including the team at The Washington Post: Fact-checking Day 1 of the 2024 Republican National Convention - The Washington Post Fact-checking Day 2 of the 2024 Republican National Convention - The Washington Post Fact-checking Day 3 of the 2024 Republican National Convention - The Washington Post Fact-checking Day 4 of the 2024 Republican National Convention - The Washington Post One of the many outrages in the Republican Party Platform is the outright call to return women's rights to the 1950's June Cleaver model: the perfect homemaker whose primary function is giving birth. Trump brags about getting Roe overturned by his appointments to the Supreme Court, Vance has endorsed a nationwide abortion ban with no exceptions. Implicit in the agenda are bans on contraception and fertility treatments including invitro fertilization. Women are the driving force for Michigan Democrats. A majority of both the House and Senate Democratic caucuses are women; most of the state's top elected leaders are women. Joining the discussion to talk about the implications of the GOP misogyny for November: state Senator Dayne Polehanki of Livonia. She is a two-time Teacher of the Year award winner and has nearly 20 years of experience in the classroom. She serves as the Majority Caucus Chair for the Michigan Senate Democrats and is in her second term. Polehanki earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Central Michigan University, has a major in English and teacher certification from Alma College, and a master's degree in teaching from Marygrove College. =========================== This episode is sponsored in part by EPIC ▪ MRA,  a full service survey research firm with expertise in: • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management =========================== The 34 for 45 Commemorative Mug Felony schmelony! Alycia and Janell also chat about why there's so much suffering in the world, the hope for Christians, finding our identity in Christ, and so much more. We hope you enjoy this episode!    About Alycia As a child growing up in the church, Alycia always had questions. She wanted to dig deeper into the Christian faith beyond the Sunday morning sermon. That fueled an independent search which led to her digging into the larger questions of life. While studying for a degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology at Robert Wesleyan College, Alycia discovered Apologetics. It changed the course of her life. Her quest for a deeper understanding of her Christianity had a name. She went on to get her Master's in Social Justice from Marygrove College to further her passion for serving those in need in the developing world. This led to various volunteering opportunities at orphanages, prisons, and shelters for the homeless in various countries including Haiti, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. A few years after her travels were completed, she was able to spend a year studying Apologetics in England. Alycia spent many years as a teacher's aide and substitute teacher for multiple grade levels. Following, she has spent over nine years doing full-time apologetics ministry where she travels and speaks on various topics relevant to our culture. She is currently with the C. S. This episode is a "must listen".  My fellow Flint, MI native Dawn Demps talk about reasons why she decided to join the #LOCGang.  Not only does Dawn share her story with us, but she also speaks on our history, the black women, and our culture. Her passion for the black community is always at the forefront and her passion for "the people" is exhibited in this episode. Dawn is relatively new to the loc journey but is no stranger to the process.  She believed that our hair will do what it's supposed to do if we just leave it alone.  Her loc process consisted of two-strand twist, monthly visits to her loctician, and only natural products such as water, oil, and essential oils. Dawn decided to leave her bang area out, so she still has the flexibility to be creative by having both locd and loose hair.    More about Dawn Demps Dawn has been involved with community advocacy and organizing since 12 years old. She utilizes her own lived experiences to connect with students and parents to promote tools for self-advocacy, structural reforms and strives to champion the concerns of these populations.    She holds an MA in Social Justice Studies from Marygrove College in Detroit, MI, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Arizona State University in Education Policy and Evaluation. She has published articles examining the possibilities of youth-inspired school leadership as exhibited through youth voice and participatory action research,  unpacking the difficulties and potential of Black and Brown collaborative educational leadership and how art can be used to expose the experiences of Black youth who have experienced school exclusion. She is currently conducting a critical ethnographic oral history study of a grassroots community advocacy group comprised of Black natural and other mothers who are galvanizing to challenge and dismantle the educational policies and practices that exclude Black children from educational spaces Dawn has been awarded the 2020/21 American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowship and Arizona State University Dissertation Completion Fellowship. No, two years of planning now ensure the 53-acre site will once again educate Detroiters, as “The School @ Marygrove” enrolls 120 ninth graders this fall and the University of Michigan launches a teacher residency program patterned after U.S. medical schools. The upshot: Marygrove the place is getting a second act, even as the financial rescue of the school itself failed.

Episode Transcript Guest: Austin Channing Brown In a time when nearly all institutions (schools, churches, universities, businesses) claim to value "diversity" in their mission statements...do our words matter? How do we do this as a people and more importantly how do we begin to reconcile with each other. Sometimes we need to realize what is the 'right medicine'.   For readers who have engaged with America's legacy on race through the writing of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Michael Eric Dyson, I'm Still Here is an illuminating look at how white, middle-class, Evangelicalism has participated in an era of rising racial hostility, inviting the reader to confront apathy, recognize God's ongoing work in the world, and discover how blackness--if we let it--can save us all Bio: Austin earned a master’s degree in social justice from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan. Building on the foundation of her graduate work, she directed a short-term missions site on the west side of Chicago, creating interactive opportunities for youth to engage issues of poverty, injustice. She also served on staff with Willow Creek Community Church, developing strategies and programming around multiculturalism. She then served as resident director and multicultural liaison for three years at Calvin College, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, working closely with millennials.   I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness: Amazon Connect with Austin on Facebook, Twitter: @AustinChanning as well as http://austinchanning.com/ Special Music for this episode was provided by Jordan St.Cyr, who was recently recognized as the CM United Artist of the Year. She has served as a teacher and administrator nationally and abroad in public, private and charter schools for nearly fifteen years. From Detroit to Prague, Chicago to South Bend, and Los Angeles to New Orleans, Kelli's teaching and leadership experience from the pre-school to collegiate level has offered life lessons on the realities of education. She is a pioneer of the balanced teacher lifestyle movement, and is currently making an impact with her honest yet hopeful blog The Chillout Teacher. In her current work, Kelli serves as a fifth grade teacher in a creative arts charter school in New Orleans' historic French Quarter. Immersing herself in the Czech culture fifteen years ago, Kelli launched her career in an International Baccalaureate School and returned to her roots in the American midwest to teach and eventually lead the openings of grassroots charter schools across the country for almost ten years. Her passion revealed itself in supporting teachers with culturally-responsive curriculum that kids loved and made teachers feel good. Beyond statistics, she soon realized that teacher turnover in these urban charter schools was an issue she wanted to investigate further. Preparing for the birth of her first child, Kelli chose to return to the classroom in 2015 and create The Chillout Teacher blog site. She also consults and trains for Louisiana teacher certification programs and pours her heart into her narrative of today's teacher lifestyle in her blog. Kelli earned her master's degree in education and K-8 math instruction from Marygrove College and her bachelor's degree in education and English from Michigan State University. She also holds a Teacher's of English as a Foreign Language Certificate from TEFL Worldwide Prague, Czech Republic. Kelli plans to explore doctorate programs focused on teacher retention and teacher preparation programs, following the birth of her second child this Spring. Support this podcast
