Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on May 25th, 2023. None of the references from that time have been changed. English rivers are polluted. Could giving them legal rights clean them up? In the town of Lewes, the answer to that question was yes. In February, the town's council voted yes to a rights of river motion, the first in the UK. This motion is the first step in a two-year long journey to give the River Ouse legal representation and rights. The UK is facing heavy river pollution: most of them are not swimmable, and all failed a quality test in 2019. Since then, government testing of rivers has only plummeted. Lewes' council now takes on the task of figuring out what exactly rights of a river should be. In this episode: Matthew Bird (@mjbirdy), mayor and former councillor of Lewes Episode credits: This episode was updated by Sarí el-Khalili. The original production team was Chloe K. Welcome back to this mini series on imperfect sustainability!! My aim for this series is to inspire you to view sustainability in a more positive light and to help you to genuinely make a difference in your own life. Let's tackle this with a non-judgemental, solutions-driven attitude and lift each other up rather than tearing each other down. Episode 4: climate change journalism with Matthew Bird "Too often climate coverage leads with data and ends with despair." In this episode Lucy chats to Matt Bird about his role as Science Editor of Impact Magazine, the best ways to write about climate change to engage the reader and the growing challenges surrounding disinformation in the media. Creating engaging content about sustainability with a solutions-driven focus is in our opinions, far better than the pessimistic, depressing stories we're so accustomed to hearing about that just turn people away from the issue. Matt also shares some insights into his PhD and offers advice for anyone wanting to start writing! Huge thanks to Matt for coming on the podcast. --- Things mentioned in this episode: Matt's Article on Covering Climate Now (here) Covering Climate Now (website) Climate Beat newsletter (here) --- Space to Learn on Apple Podcasts - leave a rating and a review here!! The majority of people say they want to write a book, as much as 80-90% by some estimates, so today we're diving into what makes a good story. It turns out, there are some rules that writers use, and once you know them, you will start to recognize them in the books you read, the movies you watch, and—hopefully—in the stories you write. Matthew Bird, the author of Secrets of Story, shares some insights. And, yes, I recommend his book because it is not only brimming with ideas, it is laugh-out-loud.
Welcome to the 6th CONKERS’ CORNER. In this podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Matthew Bird @mattbird55 on Twitter. Matthew’s interest in stocks and shares started when his Dad gave him some Jim Slater investing books in his mid teens. By his late teens he had started investing in stocks within his Dad’s trading account. With a degree in economics and qualified in regulated financial planning to Diploma level, Matt currently specialises in pensions, investments, mortgages and protection advice. Keen to build a career out of his passion, Matthew has completed his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and hopes to gain Chartered status in the not too distant future. Prior to joining Seer Green Financial Planning Matthew spent 10 years managing his family’s wholesale firm. Matthew has a keen interest in all things financial and has been an active private investor for many years. He enjoys researching his own share selections and writing a blog voicing some of his musings on investment-related topics. Whilst he admittedly has a very high risk personal attitude to investing he marries this with his Growth at Reasonable Price (GARP) & Quality over Price methodology. Over the past five years Matthew’s strategy has enabled him to beat the FTSE ALL-SHARE INDEX benchmark measure handsomely. Listen now to gain insights into how Matthew invests and learn from the lessons in his investing journey.
