This week on The Free Cheese, you can't hack this boss. We finally check in with a game we've talked about for years to see how Starbreeze's Syndicate reimagines the classic strategy game. Can Brian Cox and Rosario Dawson save the story? Does Detective Vision™ enhance every game? Let's find out and rank Syndicate on The List!
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. This week, we are fortunate enough to be joined by yet another indie game developer, Matt Glanville! We've raved about pretty much all of Matt's games on the podcast in the past, and it is truly an honor to have him on the show to talk about some video games—and he'll be on again next week for a more in-depth discussion about his work! In the meantime, Matt & Kevin have both been playing some SNKRX and admiring its deep, but simple design—and have a strikingly similar experience with the game. And while we're on the topic of shmups, Matt also fired up Alien Death Mob after we mentioned it a few weeks ago on the podcast...he's getting his butt kicked too! From there, we talk about a couple of incredibly charming, and deceptively tricky, retro-inspired platformers—Miles & Kilo, which we've raved about on the podcast before, and Mekabolt, which is the first game Kevin has actually 'beat' in quite some time! Speaking of things we've discussed on the podcast before, Matt is sinking his teeth into the Picross S Series that John has sang the praises of many times before. He's also been getting some casual gaming in with a little one of his own, and getting some mileage out of some cute & playful Nintendo Switch demos with his son! Finally, we wrap things up with Snakebird Primer after bringing up the game's far more difficult successor a few weeks back on the podcast, as Kevin & Matt seemingly had the same experience with the original game. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. Ahhh...that's more like it. We're back to our more typical habits this week, and polishing off games that we've talked about in previous episodes. Uncle Randall is back on his bullshit, trying to rebuild the Pistons from scratch around Blake Griffin in NBA 2K19. But can he get past LeBron? He also plays Miles & Kilo along with Kevin, who actually finishes a game for once. Kevin & DJ also check out the demo for a brand new, local/online multiplayer game, Lethal League Blaze—a fighting game, baseball hybrid?! Kevin rounds out his week with a couple more platformers—one, an action-puzzler, MagiCat, and the other...you guessed it...a roguelite, just released this week, Eagle Island. Randall highlights a personal favorite of his on the Switch, Marble it Up!, a Super Monkey Ball/Marble Madness spiritual successor of sorts. DJ beats the The Messenger twice and proceeds to turning his brain off to revisit an old past time of competitive online gaming. He's back on Uncharted & Rocket League this week, and he won't stop until he wins a game, goddammit! **Links to Kevin's Twitch streams of Miles & Kilo and Eagle Island are clickable in the timestamp section below** Discussed:Lethal League Blaze - 00:03:22Miles & Kilo - 00:12:31The Messenger: Picnic Panic DLC - 00:22:50MagiCat - 00:30:15Marble it Up! - 00:38:05Uncharted: Lost Legacy / Uncharted 4: Online Multiplayer - 00:46:50Rocket League - 00:50:22Eagle Island - 00:55:06The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - 01:06:21NBA 2K19 - 01:14:15*GOTM - 01:22:27 *July's GOTM is Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. We were honored to be joined by the 3DS & Switch developer of Kid Tripp & the man behind the Switch version of Miles & Kilo, Mick Waites of game developer/publisher Four Horses. We talk about the development cycles of Digger Dan DX, Kid Tripp & Miles & Kilo, if Mick prefers frame rate over graphical fidelity & even Mick's top 3 games of all time!! Greg gives Mick some of his favorite achievements from Kid Tripp & Miles & Kilo before being given the reason or a fun story behind each one. We also thank Mick for giving us a bunch of Miles & Kilo codes that we gave away on Twitter. He's a fun, charming, brilliant & talented developer who deserves as much of the spotlight as he (& Mike Burns) can fit under. SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE BONUS EPISODES! On RDP this week we tackle 2 incredible indie titles! The first game we talk about is the fun and cute adventure RPG Towards the Pantheon. Karrington gives us his thoughts and rating on this great game. Following that is the much anticipated Miles and Kilo. Kyle and Karrington go into a deep discussion about this sequel to Kid Tripp to talk about their experience playing the game! After our short break we talk about some news related to the gaming and as well as the film industry. Finally we end the show on an off topic discussion which was inspired from our previous guest Patrick Hickey Jr. We debate over subject of “fanboys”. Can you call yourself a gamer if you are exclusive to one console? Are “die-core” gamers considered to be people that open to all platforms and just love games as a whole? What is die-core? Are people that exclusively play mobile games considered gamers? Check out the links to the games below!
