Charlie and Miles have ‘gifted' each other episodes of Star Trek to talk about, both good and bad. The problem with being casual about Star Trek is you just don't know all of what's out there. That's what the Casual Trek mission is for, after all. This year the gang are doing something different, talking about a film that's adjacent to Star Trek, and even some Trek actors say is the best Star Trek movie: Galaxy Quest. This week, we're tackling three questions. The first question: How much can humans actually be genetically engineered? The second question: Are people kinder or meaner than they were 20 years ago? And the third… do you want to jam with a 1,000-person rock band? You might have a chance to in January. Featuring audio from KCBS' Bay Area All Local, WCCO's Chad Hartman and WWL's Scoot.

Barry and Abigail discuss Rockin' From the Grave and sample Pumpkin Shandy from Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (in collaboration with Soergel Orchards in Wexford, Pennsylvania), Jack from Urban Artifact in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Mind Over Matter from Magnify Brewing Company in Fairfield, New Jersey. We have gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album or Abigail's personal White Album, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Both Black Magic Woman and a cover of The Devil Went Down to Georgia by Steve Ouimette appear on GHIII: LoR, but Abigail was mistaken about (Don't Fear) The Reaper's inclusion; in fact, Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll is the Blue Öyster Cult representation on GHIII: LoR, and (Don't Fear) The Reaper is actually on Rock Band, which Abigail has played, but the Hummels have never owned.Listen to our exploration of The Munsters Theme's many different iterations in last year's Halloween episode, New Belgium Halloween (New Wave Halloween & New Belgium Brewing)! Today, we also listened to the version with lyrics and briefly discussed Far Out Munsters, the episode where the Munsters rent their home to a Beatles-inspired rock group.Edgar Winter's justification of naming his song Frankenstein because of its “monster-like, lumbering beat” reminded Abigail of Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.Watch the music video for Addams Groove by MC Hammer.Barry educated Abigail about the famous “More Cowbell” sketch from SNL, which centers around the studio recording of (Don't Fear) The Reaper! In looking deeper into the fun fact from Carlo's Corner about salt killing yeast, we stumbled upon this article on the history and science of Goses written by the brewmaster of Anderson Valley Brewing Company in Boonville, California, a brewery known for their Goses. Per the article, some Goses from the early 20th century had between 130 and 280 ppm of salt. Anderson Valley typically adds about 800 ppm of salt - but only after fermentation. It is thought that as little as 100-150 ppm of salt can cause osmotic stress to the yeast and therefore decrease fermentation rates, but the salt concentration required to completely inhibit fermentation or cause death for the yeast are much higher than humans would tolerate as palatable in a beverage.Santana's Black Magic Woman is a mash-up cover of Black Magic Woman by Fleetwood Mac and Gypsy Queen by Gábor Szabó. Abigail would much rather listen to Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas). While Abigail believes Johnny clearly won the fiddle battle in The Devil Went Down to Georgia, John Oliver strongly disagrees. Watch the boss battle against the devil from GHIII: LoR.We previously discussed the word “pompatous” (found in Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who) during our discussion of Steve Miller Band's The Joker in our episode Cans (k.d.lang and Cigar City Brewing).Read more about Paracelsus and the absolutely nauseatingly eye-rollingly annoying reason he took the name Paracelsus.Barry made Abigail play a little bit of Grandmaster Dee's Haunted Scratch, the original B-side to Freaks Come Out at Night by Whodini.Twilight Zone by Golden Earring was inspired by The Bourne Identity novel, and you may be able to tell this from the music video. The other song from two-hit wonder Golden Earring you may have heard of would be Radar Love.(Ghost) Riders in the Sky is a cover originally written and performed by Stan Jones. Prior to The Outlaws' version, Johnny Cash's version was the most well-known.Up next… Brothers in Arms by Dire StraitsJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we enjoy a bonus conversation capping our series on Portal. We talk Portal 2, the tension between story and gameplay, its length, and yes, even some co-op. And we do it all live on Twitch. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Much of SP, all of Co-op Issues covered: recording on video, our history with Portal 2, being surprised that Portal 2 was a thing, the Valve employee handbook release, wanting a different sequel, a long campaign with many puzzles and mechanics, following up a perfect game, not cashing in, adding mechanics and the puzzles that teach you, character development and delivering more lore perfectly, a miracle, the progression of the Cave Johnson story, worldbuilding conflicting with gameplay, breaking out with Wheatley, cognitive dissonance, seeing all the behind the scenes, being re-tested, potato GladOS, the magic of how narrative connects, the chicken and the egg, a successful length for the format, a whole Portal inside the penultimate chapter, embedding lore successfully, back-propagating story, sympathy for the devil (i.e. GladOS), 2 + 2 = 4, being drawn to the financially productive projects, killer app for VR, the loss of single player, VR problems for consumers, adding portals to their hero-based MOBA shooter, lack of narrative progression in the co-op campaign, co-op for the sake of co-op?, helping the player vs not helping the player, not aligning well for a controller, more portals plus more mechanics become untenable, doing the impossible alongside the possible, potential solutions for portal confusion, playtesting and confidence in your solutions, specific buttons, the doorway effect, shape language, police procedure vs police procedural, inspecting tires, bread and butter TV format, empty JRPG chests and meaningless clues, the salience problem, getting the reward as if you had the skills. This week on The Super Retro Podcast, we built the perfect late-'80s and early-'90s Saturday morning, from picking our favorite cereals and cartoons to debating the best wrestling icons, action figures, and outdoor activities that defined our childhood weekends. We also dove into who really deserves the title of best band of the 1980s, spotlighted the legendary 1989 Topps Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trading cards, and reminisced about the excitement of the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes, back when hearing the doorbell meant life-changing money might be waiting on the porch. We talked about Jim Carrey eyeing the role of George Jetson in a potential live-action Jetsons movie, celebrated Nintendo turning 40, and debuted two brand-new segments: Keepin' It Retro, our new interview feature sponsored by Arcade1Up, and Will's Walkbuster Movie Club, where we break down nostalgic flicks that defined the VHS era. We also discussed Mobb Deep's new album, Infinite, opened some epic Mailbags, had fire Discord Drops, reviewed last week's Reels, and closed out with a killer Fit Check. Meet Michael J. Wistock: The Executive by Day, Rockstar by NightWhat does it take to thrive in two drastically different worlds—corporate boardrooms and rock stages—while still managing to keep your feet on the ground (and your heart full)? My guest, Michael J. Wistock, is the definition of a modern renaissance man who proves that passion and professionalism don't have to live in separate lanes.By title, Michael holds a high-powered position in the corporate world as Senior Vice President of Global Sales in the telecom space. His work takes him around the globe, navigating strategic partnerships, closing multimillion-dollar deals, and leading teams in high-stakes environments. But what truly sets Michael apart is that once the blazer comes off, the mic comes on.That's right—Michael is also the frontman and creative heartbeat behind The Sunset Riot, a rock band that blends gritty soul, explosive guitar riffs, and raw emotion into a sound that stays with you long after the lights go down. Whether it's writing lyrics in hotel rooms between meetings or flying straight from a client dinner to a soundcheck, Michael juggles it all with a rare kind of grace and grit. And just when you think his plate couldn't get any fuller—he recently stepped into another lifelong role: husband. Michael is newly married to the beautiful Red, his partner, muse, and biggest supporter. Her influence is woven into much of his music and decision-making, offering him both grounding and inspiration in equal measure. It's not just about balance for Michael—it's about integration. He doesn't compartmentalize his life; he blends it. Each role fuels the other. His corporate mindset brings structure and drive to the band, while the creative spark from music adds color and emotional depth to his business strategies. In our conversation, we dive into how Michael manages the constant travel, the secret to switching gears between boardrooms and backstage, and how love, music, and leadership all play into his ever-evolving journey. Trust me—you don't want to miss this one.
