The early 2000s were the golden age of rhythm and music games and the GameCube couldn't escape their grasp on pop culture. Before Guitar Hero and Rock Band though there was Donkey Konga! The amazingly fun rhythm game played by hitting some awesome bongo peripherals and throwing some claps in there too! Join Mike, Neil and friend of the show Kyra to talk about some of their favourite memories and tracks from these two (three if you count Japan) games. The boys also talk about the rise and fall of DDR with Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix, a Mad Catz clone: MC Groovz, and last but not least from Harmonix comes Karaokes Revolution Party, not quite Guitar Hero but in terms of gameplay and aesthetics, as close as the GameCube was going to get. recorded 10/14/2021 with Robert Rabel   Rob's favorite Video Game OSTs Pt1   Intro: 00:00 Overview and general impressions: 00:43 Playlist Breakdown: 34:42 Stuck Mojo digression: 1:24:03 Wrap up: 1:31:40   Rob sez:   Why these specific games/tracks: ============== Special to me/nostalgia Tended to favor rhythmically interesting over atmospheric for Richard's benefit Just good tunes There are many other tracks from games that I love, but weren't as interesting to talk about or required specific experience because they're more mood builders/enhancers   Why this is an especially difficult topic: ============== So much of what music does for a game comes from the context in which it is experienced. This means that without the visuals, control feel, sound effects, story, characters, etc that comprise a game, you're never going to get the full understanding of what the music "means" to the experience.   Also: better to do a more personal retrospective or a more medium-representative one? I went with personal, since you can find any number of Best Gaming OSTs of the 90s/00s/10s out there, and they usually contain the same few games. Or stuff like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, or Grand Theft Auto which contain primarily or solely licensed music created outside the scope of the game. All of the music I've chosen for these lists was written specifically for these games, often in creative tandem.   Very interested to see how these hit Richard's ear, because despite me still *believing* that I think it's all good music, I can't honestly say that I'm hearing it objectively. For instance, every track on here (to varying extents) calls to mind some part of the game it's from and even some tangentially related memories.   Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWvzvA9F-7moCMAnko3hlnRAzv_FWxjTg   Part 1: 1991-2000 ============== Sonic the Hedgehog 1 - Masato Nakamura, 1991, Mascot platformer, Fast Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Masato Nakamura, 1992, Mascot platformer, Fast Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Various (and more, incl. All rights reserved.  Jason sat down with Joseph Rojas of the rock band Seventh Day Slumber. They discussed how he fell into addiction due to the various traumas that he endured in his youth and the consequences of his addiction and how he turned them into his greatest advantage being of service to others and building a stable family life. Joseph Rojas grew up in the housing projects of Victoria, Texas, where gunfire and sirens echoed through the neighborhood. But, for Joseph, the rough streets became a refuge from the nightmare of his home life. He remembers being about three and a half years old and being ten feet away from my father as he beat my mother bloody, and that was the memory he grew up with, of a father. When Joseph was still a small child, his father left the family. Joseph's mother worked long hours to provide for her two boys. Many times they were left to a babysitter that his mom was unaware was abusing her son. Joseph was hurting, empty, alone, and seeking acceptance. That's when he found the wrong crowd along with drugs and alcohol. At the age of 14, he did his first line of cocaine. Before he knew it, a line became two lines, two lines became three lines, and then by the end of it all, at the age of 21, he had a $400 a-day cocaine addiction. Learn how Joseph was able to turn his life around, through faith and support from his mom. How his musical journey saved his life, bringing purpose. Along with his faith, meeting his wife with who he has 3 sons, and how he started the rock band Seventh Day Slumber. This is Joseph Rojas in his own words, on Knockin' Doorz Down.

Touring in a rock band is one of the most fantasized about – and widely misunderstood – lifestyles in the modern world. While everyone thinks it's all backstage parties and endless excess, the reality is far more down to Earth, though no less interesting. Dan Aid is here to set the record straight on tour life, having been around the globe with the punk rock band Authority Zero and toured with other acts as well.Among other highlights of road life, Dan recalls sleeping in a rodent-infested squatter flat in Germany, which is actually a step up from sleeping in the van – no one likes to crash on those long, hard bench seats. He also discusses what he loves about touring, and why it's so hard for many musicians to get off the road, when it's the only life they've ever known. If you've ever played in a band, wanted to play in a band, or even just attended a concert and wondered what that guitarist's life was like off-stage, this episode will fill you in on what you're missing. In Hot Takes, Tim and Eben whether Duty-Free shops are bullshit. Guy Garvey's vocals and wordplay are perched atop a well-orchestrated but never overwrought blend of melodic bass, guitar and piano riffs, and pulsing percussion, all the while squeezing out a wide range of bottled emotions onto expansive life paintings. They've referred to themselves as "prog without the solos" (AllMusic). elbow plays music from their 2017 album, "Little Fictions" in-studio. (From the Archives, 2017.)

Greg, Bruce, and Joey are back in the lab this week (or was it last week…time tends to escape us) to share stories about their latest concert experiences and discuss upcoming live events, including the Great Blue spring tour set to commence in May! During this episode, the hosts reminisce about recent shows in NYC - covering bands such as Mungion, Eggy, and The Motet - and “look forward” to seeing concerts from this *past* weekend featuring Dogs In A Pile and lespecial. The guys also head #downthepathway to talk tour with the boiz from Great Blue - Peter Anspach, Ethan Michael, Seth Zucker, and Nick Hanna! Beyond their upcoming tour, the group discusses the history behind Great Blue, the growth of the band as friends and musicians, and how all “musical paths” lead back to Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, if you happen to play the French horn…or drums, whatever floats your boat). So there are precious few music software packages that will come up during discussions at my family's dinner table. Logic? No way. Ableton Live? Mainly because the kids really like their T-shirts. But if I want to get the kids chattering, I can bring up the family's retro-love of Guitar Hero or Rock Band. And who was leading product development of those products? Today's guess – Greg LoPiccolo! Greg has moved onto new things – including his new company, ToneStone (https://tonestone.com/) And while he's no longer creating consumer games, the idea of combining a game mentality with music is still in his bones. But now, instead of trying to match riffs with Zakk Wylde or Slash, you are actually producing, mixing and sharing your own musical creations. Greg is really into many game-oriented ideas surrounding this effort, and it is really interesting to dig into his mind to see how he is creating his simple but deep music production project. I push to find out the limits, and to find out the perspective that make it unique in the marketplace. Enjoy!
