To HD-2D, or not to HD-2D? That is the question Eric, Nadia, and special guest Timothy Monbleau are asking on this week's episode. From retro revivals like Live-A-Live and Dragon Quest to brand-new throwbacks like Octopath Traveler and The Adventures of Elliot, Square sure loves its depth-of-field-and-bloom-filled pixel-art dioramas! But should EVERY mid-budget RPG be adopting this style or is there a time and place for this look? We can't believe it's been two months since the Switch 2 launched and it definitely feels long and short at the same time. We're going to check in on how we're feeling about the system and if we are optimistic about the future. We also have the triumphant return of Nintendo Storytime this week with an interesting story about the time a natural disaster delayed a Nintendo Direct and all the drama that happened around it. Welcome back to Nintendo Therapy, your weekly session for dissecting the latest Nintendo news, spotlighting beloved classics, and occasionally asking the big questions—like whether Mario and Peach are just friends or if you've really beaten a game if you don't remember why you're opening a chest. In Episode 132, Kevin revisits A Link to the Past and unpacks why it might be the greatest video game leap in history—yes, even bigger than the jump to Ocarina of Time. He also discusses the muscle memory of mastery and why sometimes nostalgia gets it right.Harrison dives deep into the internet's strange obsession with Nintendo romances, Peach and Mario's ambiguous status, and why projecting romance onto games aimed at kids is…weird. Also: his take on DK Bananza and Mario Kart World, and whether this new DK entry is cause for concern. The crew also reacts to the latest Partner Direct, where surprises like Octopath Traveler 0, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, and Monster Hunter Stories 3 had RPG fans cheering—and Kevin a little jealous on behalf of Pokémon.Plus:DK94 Spotlight – Is this the Mario game that everyone thinks they played but didn't? The gang finally gives it its due. Is Big City the blueprint for New Donk City? Has any puzzle game earned this much respect? The BeatEmUps Controversy – A popular creator fakes a Nintendo leak “for science.” Was it worth the chaos? The team unpacks the ethics of influence and misinformation in the age of viral game news.Switch 2 hype – Shawn's already got his hands on the next-gen console (somehow), and Odyssey's smoother than ever—except for those motion-controlled moons.Underrated Gem Alert – SOMA hits the Switch, and horror fans should take note.

In today's Daily Fix:Looks like there's still some bad blood between gaming auteur Hideo Kojima and his former employers at Konami. In an interview with Ssense, Kojima was asked if he was going to play the upcoming remake of his Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, titled Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater. He replied, "No." Kojima and Konami had a falling out during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which saw the famed developer leave to form his own studio, which has released two Death Stranding games. In other news, Hollow Knight still does not have an official release date, despite a Nintendo Partner Direct happening, which would have been a good opportunity to make the announcement. And finally, in the same Direct, a new Octopath Traveler was announced for all current-gen consoles.

PS This is Awesome: Episode 374 - Doom Drops, Marines Rise, and Oblivion LoomsFred took a break from Octopath Traveler 2 this week, but he did boot up Space Marine 2 to check out the big new free update. We'll dig into his thoughts on that later in the episode. Jake finally beat Robocop: Rogue City and shares with us his specs. He also started playing a game called Anno MutationemNo listener feedback this week—y'all must be as busy as we are. Let's get into what's going on in the world of PlayStation.Bethesda fans, mark your calendars—there's an official Oblivion Remastered announcement coming on April 22. We've been hearing rumors forever, but this is the real deal. Meanwhile, DOOM: The Dark Ages just dropped its official trailer. The game launches May 15, 2025, and the trailer is an interesting mix—starting off pretty story-heavy before unleashing that signature DOOM gameplay, backed by some face-melting metal. You're playing as “The Slayer,” naturally. It looks awesome. There's a new showcase on the scene called Galaxies, focused on indie and first-look games. It streamed exclusively on Twitch and featured titles like SPINE, Firebreak (Remedy's next project), and Clair Obscur. PS This is Awesome: Episode 373Fred's still plugging away at Octopath Traveler 2, now around 38 hours in. Progress is happening, but it's slowing down a bit—he's feeling a bit under-leveled, which is making battles tougher than they should be. Meanwhile, Jake's sticking with Robocop: Rogue City and still having a good time with it.We didn't get any listener feedback this week, so let's jump into the news.We finally got confirmation that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is heading to PS5 with a release date of April 17, 2025. Space Marine 2 just dropped a massive update called Trygon, featuring a new operation, the Inferno Pistol, new cosmetics, and even prestige ranks for the multiplayer crowd. The update is live now, and there's a trailer to check out.We also got the full gameplay reveal for Marathon, and it's officially coming September 23, 2025. It's a squad-based extraction shooter and feels very Destiny 2-esque in terms of style and polish.Mafia: The Old Country had its release date accidentally leaked by 2K through a Steam post—looks like it's dropping August 8, 2025. Not the most graceful reveal, but now we know. With The Masters wrapping up, EA Sports PGA Tour is available now for PS Plus Extra members. Also, the PS Portal got a system update that improves PS Plus Cloud Streaming, so if you're using one of those, things should feel smoother. In TV news, The Last of Us is officially getting a third season on HBO, which should surprise no one given how well it's doing. We also touched on our sideshow this week and talked about GrimKeep, a new roguelike RPG/dice builder from the makers of Demeo. The voiceover has a Darkest Dungeon vibe, and the art style is clearly drawing inspiration from the same space. Could be one to keep an eye on.Let's get into the episode!By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. PS This is Awesome: Episode 372Fred is still clocking hours in Octopath Traveler 2, staying steady at around 34 hours. Jake's been making solid progress in Jedi Survivor, now about 20 hours in and still loving it. He also watched the director's cut of Robocop this week, which got him pumped to dive into Robocop: Rogue City—and yeah, he's playing that now too.As for the news, Bungie is finally ready to show off more of Marathon during a livestream on Saturday, April 12th. Hopefully this one delivers—we're all overdue for a real look at what that reboot's going to be. In other updates, Horizon Zero Dawn's planned TV series isn't happening anymore. Creative differences reportedly got in the way, so now it's being reimagined as a movie instead. Honestly, could be a better fit. There's also chatter around the Switch 2 and what it even is at this point. Hades 2 is launching first on Switch and PC, which makes sense—but it does raise the question: do we even consider the Switch 2 a full console anymore? Or is it basically a high-powered handheld? The lines are getting blurrier, that's for sure.Let's get into the show!By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. Fred is still making his way through Octopath Traveler 2, now sitting at around 34 hours in. Jake hasn't had much time for games lately but is still chipping away at Jedi Survivor. In the news, Starfield is officially headed to PS5, though there's no word yet on when that'll happen. Tony Hawk himself hand-picked some tracks for the Pro Skater 3 & 4 remakes, which pretty much guarantees a killer soundtrack. Over on PS Plus Essential, April's lineup is looking strong with Robocop: Rogue City, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. Meanwhile, Naughty Dog has a second original game in the works that's been quietly in development for three years—and no, it's not The Last of Us Part III.WB Games has reportedly scrapped plans for Hogwarts Legacy DLC, according to Bloomberg. In a surprise move, Everybody's Golf is now under Bandai Namco, though it's unclear what they're planning for the series. Lastly, Intergalactic is apparently playable internally, and Neil Druckmann says it's shaping up to be something incredible. If all goes well, we could see it hit in 2027.Let's dive in!By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. This week on NAFC, the team dives into Amazon Prime's new animated video game anthology Secret Level and dream up some of the video games they'd love to see animated. Izzy can't stop gushing about the Octopath Traveler series, and somehow, he's still not done. Meanwhile, Gibbs flexes his Duolingo muscles, proudly climbing the ranks of the Spanish leaderboard. The crew shares their thoughts on office pranks—are they harmless fun or just annoying? In the gaming corner, Zea and Gibbs team up for some feline fun in Cat Quest 3, while Mox gets an early look at Black Myth Wukong and marvels at just how much power your rig will need to run it. On the movie front, Izzy shares his thoughts on Twisters 2024—apparently, a 75-inch TV just doesn't do it justice. Gibbs gives his take on the latest season of True Detective: Night Country. Then, they venture into darker territory with a quick, gory review of The Sadness (2021) before closing the episode with their final pick for the Liminal Spaces theme: 1408 (2007) Support us on Patreon!
In this episode of NAFC, the team takes a hilarious trip down memory lane, reminiscing about how the podcast got started during the pandemic—complete with a surprising connection to glory holes. Yeah, it's that kind of episode. The conversation quickly takes a left turn as they discuss the strange legal fine print of Disney Plus: Apparently, if you sign up, you can't sue them for wrongful death at their parks. From there, they pivot to the absurd idea that "AI" now stands for "All Indians." Yes, it's as wild as it sounds. On the gaming front, Baldur's Gate 3 snagged a Hugo Award, which has everyone buzzing. Izzy celebrates beating "Octopath Traveler 1" and is already diving into the sequel. Meanwhile, Gibbs shares his thoughts on "Furiosa," the latest installment in the Mad Max saga, and it sparks yet another conversation about whether anyone can be trusted to make reboots anymore. The team also takes a moment to discuss the surprising fact that Ms. Rachel is beating Disney at appealing to kids. It seems Disney is shifting its focus to Millennials now, leaving the younger generation to other influencers. And just when you thought the bumper sticker conversation was over, Gibbs has found yet another confusing one to share. Wrapping things up, the crew dives into their review of the movie Predestination, followed by a quick look at The Terror Live. Expect strong opinions and plenty of laughs as they dissect these films with their usual blend of sarcasm and wit. Support us on Patreon!
Video game news always seems to be depressing now. We get upset about some layoffs and then go into detail about the shutdown of Industry staple Game Informer. As for what we played I have continued Octopath Traveler 2, but got into the 2KXO beta and share my thoughts on that. Matt continues to go ham and beat Army of Two, and began playing the first PSP God of War Game.
We are truly in the summer news doldrums now! We talk about the Sag-Aftra video game strike and all of Humble Games suddenly being laid off. Not a very uplifting news segment... Then, I go on about how I am continuing to play Zenless Zone Zero, beat Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, and am continuing to plug away at Octopath Traveler 2. Matt on the other hand decided to try and turn back time to 2008, so he's playing the classic Tomb Raider: Underworld! He also finished that Ratchet and Clank game from last time I didn't even know existed!
fter a flurry of activity, we find ourselves in a bit of a lull. And frankly, that's good. We could all use a little bit of a rest. Doing so allows us to catch up, refresh, and anticipate what lies behind the next undoubtedly-busy corner. With E3's multi-pronged replacement readying a barrage of announcements and other newsworthy bits, let's clear what's on our plate at present. Firewalk's divisive Concord has been given a (compelling?) price, PSVR2 is receiving its long-rumored PC adapter, WB loses $200 million on Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game, the original Halo is rumored for release on PS5, and much more. Listener inquiries wrap things up, per usual. Does Astro Bot have the potential to be PlayStation's next big IP? Do Chinese games deserve more respect? Why doesn't PlayStation Network allow you to buy digital titles for your friends? Is Colin a psychopath for embracing the 'sock-shoe, sock-shoe' lifestyle? Then we answer questions submitted on Patreon by the community and award the iam8bit question of the week! You can win a prize and help make the show better by supporting us on Patreon and leaving a question! https://www.patreon.com/minnmax Watch and share the video version - https://youtu.be/gOR_pCM7Ad0 Donate to help foster kids in Minnesota, our Give To The Max stream is happening on Saturday! https://www.givemn.org/story/Minnmax23 Check out the Level with Emily podcast - https://www.levelwithemily.com/ Help support MinnMax's supporters! https://www.uncommongoods.com/minnmax - 15% off https://www.notion.com/minnmax https://www.rocketmoney.com/minnmax https://www.iam8bit.com - 10% off with Promo Code: GOBBLETILYOUWOBBLE RSVP for Day of the Devs in LA on December 8th here - https://bit.ly/dotd2023gameawardseditiontickets To jump to a particular discussion, check out the timestamps below... 00:00:00 - Intro 00:01:10 - Emily Reese from Level With Emily 00:04:03 - Give To The Max Charity Stream This Saturday 00:07:28 - Our favorite game music from 2023 00:08:05 - Baldur's Gate 3 00:11:10 - Alan Wake 2 00:15:58 - Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty 00:17:54 - Octopath Traveler 2 00:19:43 - Tchia 00:23:55 - Humanity 00:26:33 - A Space For The Unbound 00:28:25 - Final Fantasy XVI 00:32:51 - Theatrhythm Final Bar Line 00:34:13 - Oxenfree II: Lost Signals 00:37:02 - Goodbye Volcano High 00:39:55 - Sea of Stars 00:43:51 - Tren 00:46:30 - Like A Dragon Gaiden 00:47:30 - Super Mario RPG 00:49:17 - Venba 00:51:27 - Street Fighter 6 00:52:52 - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 00:56:01 - Forspoken 00:57:55 - Dead Island 2 00:58:55 - Bayonetta Origins 00:59:45 - Pizza Tower 01:01:28 - Splatoon 3's season update 01:03:17 - Marvel's Spider-Man 2 01:03:46 - Bombrush Cyberfunk 01:04:59 - Starfield 01:06:05 - Hi-Fi Rush 01:07:33 - Jusant 01:08:29 - The Last Spell 01:10:25 - Lamplighter's League 01:12:18 - Pikmin 4 01:13:00 - Otxo 01:14:46 - El Paso, Elsewhere 01:16:07 - Super Mario Bros.
