The story follows the journey of a young man named Kvothe, who is a gifted and multifaceted character with a tragic past. The narrative is framed as a story being told by Kvothe himself, now living a quiet life as an innkeeper named Kote. The tale begins as a mysterious chronicler finds him and persuades him to recount his life's story.Kvothe's narrative spans his early years as a member of a traveling troupe of performers, where he is exposed to music, storytelling, and magic. After the brutal murder of his parents by a group of beings known as the Chandrian, Kvothe becomes orphaned and struggles to survive on the streets of the nearby city, Tarbean. There, he learns about the harsh realities of life and the importance of cunning and adaptability.Eventually, Kvothe makes his way to the prestigious University, where he aspires to learn about magic ("sympathy"), science, and lore. His incredible intelligence and natural talent make him a strong student, but he also faces significant challenges, including rivalries with fellow students like Ambrose and the financial difficulties associated with tuition. While at the University, Kvothe becomes embroiled in various adventures, including his quest to uncover the truth about the Chandrian and to learn the elusive "name of the wind," which holds powerful magical potential. He builds relationships with key characters such as the enigmatic Denna, a young woman who captures his heart, and Master Elodin, a talented but unconventional teacher who challenges Kvothe's understanding of magic.Throughout the book, themes of storytelling, identity, and the nature of truth are explored, as Kvothe navigates a world filled with danger, secrets, and the pursuit of knowledge. Send us a textCurtis LaFleche's life changed dramatically at age 16 when he was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis – a condition that causes spinal fusion and threatened his athletic pursuits. Rather than surrendering to limitations, this diagnosis sparked an unexpected journey into the wilderness that transformed his life."I just started walking down the ski trails," Curtis recalls, "and then I fell in love with hiking... seeing birds for the first time I didn't know existed and these plants." What began as rehabilitation became a profound connection with nature that would shape his future career in forestry and conservation, where he made conscious decisions to protect wildlife habitats and riparian zones while managing logging operations. Now 46, Curtis embraces outdoor adventures with a wisdom born from decades managing chronic pain. His upcoming 15-day solo canoe expedition through Ontario's Temagami region represents both a physical challenge and a deeply meaningful journey. Beginning on Gamble Lake, where he planted trees 25 years ago, and ending at Emerald Lake, where his partner's family has scattered ashes of loved ones, the 160-kilometer route creates a perfect circle in his life story.Curtis shares his meticulous planning process – from creating detailed spreadsheets tracking gear weight to dehydrating trail meals and calculating necessary daily calories. His "nothing but time" philosophy prioritizes enjoyment and safety over covering distance. "If I have to triple carry, I don't care," he explains. "I'm going to pull out my camera and watch birds and take three carries and spend two hours on the trail."Beyond his personal adventures, Curtis finds joy in introducing his teenage daughters to the backcountry, carefully balancing challenge with comfort. "I think someday they're going to find solace in the forest," he reflects, recognizing how his own wilderness connection began during life's challenges.Ready to embark on your own wilderness journey? I explored the power of choosing “yes” as a default mode—an approach that can open doors and spark transformation, no matter where you are in life. By intentionally welcoming challenges and unexpected opportunities, I discovered a sense of freedom and potential I hadn't tapped into before. My recent travels took me through the breathtaking wilderness of my birth country, New Zealand, but the real discovery was how much bigger life becomes when we let curiosity guide us. Saying “yes” doesn't mean agreeing to everything blindly; it's about giving ourselves the space to consider what might be possible. Especially in the second half of life, this mindset shift can lead to newfound joy, fulfillment, and personal growth. If you're ready for a change, try replacing that instinctive “no” with an open-hearted “yes” and see where it leads.

Amira Nystrom is literally a miracle. At 21yo, she went into brain surgery being told by her doctor that nobody had ever survived that particular procedure. Her chances of making it through the surgery and NOT becoming a vegetable were less than 1%. Of course, she made it. She then seemingly cured her chronic Crohn's Disease by simply deciding she didn't want it anymore and living her life in that manner. Then, without qualifications, experience or training, she started an Epic Adventure business and a hypnotherapy practice which are both thriving more than a decade later. On second thought, she's either a miracle or from another planet. Regardless, check out the latest episode of Middle Age Mess or find Amira at www.epicmauihikes.com.

Low Magic. We've discussed it before and, in last weeks article, DM Chris delved into ideas of how to make magic rare and special in your D&D campaigns. In our discussion online regarding the article, there was a debate over what low magic means. The issue seemed to revolve around confusing Low Magic with Low Fantasy. Middle-Earth, while being a High Fantasy setting, is, in terms of D&D, a Low Magic setting for the simple fact that there are no spellcasting classes. In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave discuss the preparations for the upcoming LOTR campaign; how magic will work, the lack of spellcasters as a class, the types of characters that we're thinking of developing, among many other topics. For anyone that is hoping to really approach magic differently in their home games, this is the episode for you.1:50 Our continuing discussion about our upcoming Lord of the Rings campaign and how we're approaching a setting with low access to magic.4:01 What are you going to do now? Trying to top your previous campaigns.7:15 DM Chris delves into his thoughts surrounding how to lessen access to magic as he began preparing and planning his Lord of the Rings campaign. 11:55 Middle-Earth as a world is highly magical, but how that plays at the table changes it significantly from all other D&D settings – Bilbo and the Dwarves didn't have a Boss Battle with Smaug.17:35 How much Meteor Swarm would change the Arthurian Tales.19:05 How rare magic will turn everything into significant encounters: healing, journeys, rests, etc.22:52 A rare Rock and Roll DM story about short rests and long rests.24:55 DM Chris explains the idea of the “Fellowship Phase” and “Shadow Points” in LOTR, like Call of Cthulhu Sanity points in Middle-Earth.32:05 What's the economy of Middle-Earth?37:50 How to build characters that will hook into the setting of Middle-Earth.40:30 Final Thoughts.

We filled the pauses in conversation with all of our deepest confessions before recording this great episode! A main topic was how we thought about strength work and heat training in the Leadville 100 build. While David's mileage wasn't wildly high, he made some big changes in the last year that harness the power of heat to spur hematological changes, and strength to spur booty changes. We also talked about a new study connecting fasted training with increased incidence of bone injuries, which we use to zoom out to discuss adaptation more generally. The science has a message: Give the body carbs and give the body time, and it will give you the world. And this one had so many of our favorite topics! Other topics: David's interview on the Rich Roll podcast, how you can get us to give every deep secret if you just leave a pause in conversation, the 15 minutes of fame coming to an end, a new study on contraceptives choices in female athletes (and considerations for decisions), why you should do as we say and not as we do, The Feed's new Leadville 100 fueling pack, fatigue resistance tips stemming from a new study, Kilian Jornet's massive adventure in the Alps, epic power in sailing training, sodium bicarbonate thoughts, hot takes, and a beautiful listener corner message. This episode is buffet of joy, humor, and questionable hot takes. Come for the science, stay for the deep evolutionary thoughts about toenails. We love you all! Plenty of famous explorers and frontiersmen emerged from America's periods of expansion and exploration, and today the likes of Daniel Boone, Kit Carson, and Davy Crockett remain household names. You're probably not familiar, but should be, with the name of another prominent pioneer: Jedediah Smith. Smith was a hunter, trapper, writer, cartographer, mountain man, and explorer who notched a lot of firsts: He was the first to lead a documented exploration from the Salt Lake frontier to the Colorado River and was part of the first parties of U.S. citizens to cross the Mojave Desert, the Sierra Nevada, and the Great Basin Desert. Having survived three attacks by Native Americans and one mauling by a grizzly bear, Smith's explorations became resources for those who followed after and led to the use of the South Pass as the dominant route across the Continental Divide for pioneers on the Oregon Trail. In the new book he co-authored, Throne of Grace: A Mountain Man, an Epic Adventure, and the Bloody Conquest of the American West, my guest, Bob Drury, uses the oft-forgotten Smith as a guide to an oft-forgotten period in American history. Today on the show, Bob paints a picture of a volatile American landscape in which trappers and Native Americans collided and clashed in the early decades of the 19th century. We discuss how the Lewis and Clark expedition created a lust for adventure among young men, how the humble beaver played an outsized role in settling the Western frontier, and how warfare changed amongst Native American tribes with the introduction of the horse. Along the way, Bob shows us how the life of Jed Smith intersected with all these historic trends and shares the epic exploits that he and other mountain men took part in while exploring and mapping the American West.Resources Related to the PodcastBob's last appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #469 — How Valley Forge Turned the Tide of the Revolutionary WarAoM article about mountain menAoM Podcast #681: The Epic Exploits of Kit CarsonHugh Glass
