Mark and I really enjoyed discussing what Yes virtuosity means to us with the help of YMP Patrons Brian Harris, Michael OConnor, HB Pettersen, Jon Pickles, Dave Owen, Gary Betts, Mark Slater and Ronnie Neeley this week. Can you guess what we all chose for our examples of Yes virtuosity? You might be surprised, as Mark and I were. There were some common themes that emerged which is always encouraging because it means we are not on our own in our thoughts about the band. So thank you to all those Patrons but do have your own say by adding a comment to the show notes for this week. What does virtuosity mean? Who deserves the description? Does it just mean playing fast? Argghhh! Apologies again to those who sent in entries to the quiz from a couple of weeks ago. I did forget this time! The controversy triggered widespread conversation across the online music world—drawing in heavyweights like Adam Neely and Rick Beato. But here's the twist: we don't agree with most of what they had to say.

Tune in as Andy (Fat Dude Digs Flicks Movie Podcasts) slides back into his guest seat for a breakdown of Virtuosity, the 1995 sci-fi action thriller that sends a prisoner with a police officer background on a mission to stop a serial killer who's managed to escape his birthplace of virtual reality and is now terrorizing the real world. The investment that director Brett Leonard puts into VR through projects like Virtuosity and The Lawnmower Man, the lovably bonkers expanse of Russell Crowe's committed performance, the cheesy and dated 90s CGI in this cyberpunk landscape, and the missed opportunity to further flesh out the commentary on topics like incarcerated slave labor and police brutality stand out as a few of the subjects that this episode covers. Directed by Brett Leonard, Virtuosity stars Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Kelly Lynch, Stephen Spinella, William Forsythe, Louise Fletcher, William Fichtner, Costas Mandylor, Kevin J. Zo, while vacationing in Las Angeles, narrowly avoids getting caught up in a hostage situation. There was a club nearby that he thought about checking out, but he skipped it because this dance club didn't have the vibe that he was looking for. Later he saw on the news that the club had been taken over by a crazed lunatic who was forcing people to scream at gunpoint for the sheer pleasure of it. Zo could have been one of those people. There are also conspiracy theories floating around that the crazy man is actually a serial killer computer program set loose on the public in an advanced android body by the government to cull the population. They can't do that can they? Is that technology even feasible?  Zo decides that the moral of the story is to stay out of dance clubs. 00:03:33 - Opening Credits for Virtuosity starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe00:12:39- Favorite Parts of the 1995 Film: Virtuosity00:30:48- Trivia from the Movie Virtuosity00:37:56  - Critics' Thoughts on Brett Leonard's Virtuosity Please leave a comment, suggestion or question on our social media: Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:Website: www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@backlookcinemaTwitter: https://twitter.com/backlookcinemaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BackLookCinemaInstagram: https://instagram.com/backlookcinemaThreads: https://www.threads.net/@backlookcinemaTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@backlookcinemaTwitch https://www.twitch.tv/backlookcinemaBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/backlookcinema.bsky.socialMastodon: https://mstdn.party/@backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com Again, thanks for listening.

Together, they explore the evolving landscape of leadership through the rich metaphor of orchestral music. Drawing from their experiences in both performance and organizational development, they unpack how traditional models of leadership are transforming from solo performances to symphonic collaborations. Using the powerful analogy of musical instruments and orchestral dynamics, they discuss how leaders must learn to both resonate authentically and harmonize with others, adapting their "instruments" to changing conditions while maintaining their unique voice. Eduardo and Jennifer delve into critical questions about leadership in uncertain times: When should we step forward as soloists, and when should we blend into the chorus? How do we prepare our instruments for unknown future performances? Discover fresh insights into the challenges and opportunities of leadership in 2025 and beyond.

Stevie Wonder may very well be our modern-day Mozart. A child prodigy, he joined Motown as a preadolescent, marketed as “Little Stevie Wonder.” He amazed audiences with his virtuosic command of the piano, harmonica, drums, and, of course, his vocals. At just 13, he achieved his first number one hit with “Fingertips Part II,” an unusual chart-topper that featured a live recording of mostly improvised music, with Wonder switching between instruments as the audience cheered him on. However, his talent far surpassed this early novelty. In the 1970s, Wonder broke free from the constraints of his initial recording contract, gaining both artistic and financial independence. Between 1971 and 1976, during what is now known as his "classic period," he released five of the most iconic albums in popular music, beginning with Music of My Mind and culminating in Songs in the Key of Life. These albums showcased his musical genius and included timeless songs that have become part of the modern pop canon, touching on themes of love, heartbreak, justice, and spirituality. Few child prodigies fulfill their potential as profoundly as Stevie Wonder. In this episode of Switched on Pop, with the help of Wesley Morris, NYT critic and host of the audio series The Wonder of Stevie, the show reflects on some of Wonder's most powerful compositions, exploring what makes him our contemporary musical maestro. Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are finishing up our Cyberpunk 1995 theme with the aggresively middling Virtuosity (1995). I had a fairly fun time with with this cop thriller made up to be a cyber thriller. Watching Russell Crowe play an "unhinged" AI amalgamtion of every serial killer known to man was a blast, it was just alot of the other parts that were a snooze. I gave this film a 6/10 for bringing some interesting additions to an extremely worn out genre. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/

WELCOME TO ONO-SENDAI 2! From the Director of the Lawnmower Man, it's Virtuosity!!! i actually rewatched the lawnmower man the other day. i found a copy of the director's cut which is (somehow) about 30 minutes longer. it much more clearly shows the directors ambitions to make something like a universal monster movie but for the 90s. it has a morally questionable scientist and a monster. the ambitions are quickly abandoned in favor of cg NONSENSE, but i'm happy there's a director's cut out there! you should youtube search "lawnmower man brain mowing" swimfanspod.com patreon.com/swimfans

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched “A Time to Kill,” Joel Schumacher's 1996 adaptation of a 1989 John Grisham novel by the same name.Starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey, with supporting performances from Kevin Spacey, Oliver Platt, Charles S. Dutton, Ashley Judd, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris Cooper, “A Time to Kill” concerns the trial of Carl Lee Hailey, a black man on trial for capital murder after killing the two men who assaulted his 10-year-old daughter. When Jake Brigance, a white lawyer who previously defended Hailey's brother, takes the job to keep Carl Lee out of the execution's chamber, the small Mississippi town of Canton, where the film takes place, is plunged into chaos. Brigance and his team must navigate national attention, a skilled and ambitious prosecutor, and a revitalized Ku Klux Klan, willing, able and eager to derail the trail and stop Brigance by any means necessary. All the while, Brigance must handle the strain on his family and his marriage. The official tagline for “A Time to Kill” was: “A lawyer and his assistant fighting to save a father on trial for murder. A time to question what they believe. A time to doubt what they trust. And no time for mistakes.”You can find “A Time to Kill” to rent or buy on demand at iTunes and Amazon. For our next episode, we're watching “Chain Reaction,” a science-fiction thriller directed by Andrew Davis and starring Morgan Freeman and Keanu Reeves.Connor Lynch produced this episode. Movie #2 for the "MONTH OF CHAOS" is an obscure one from Charlie. Denzel Washington and Russel Crow play an exciting cat and mouse game in a movie that desperately wants to be Demolition Man / T2 but without the charm.  None of us hated this film but it did leave us a little wanting; wanting it to end that is. That's not fair because the film wasn't bad but rather it dealt us an endless Lord of the Rings multiple ending montage. It's a soft recommend from all of us especially if you're nostalgic for 90s dodgy CG attempts.

What if someone designed a computer program based on a hundred of the worst serial killers, assassins, despots, and also Emperor Hirohito for some reason, used silicon snake technology to make him real, and set him loose in Los Angeles? Also what if this terrifying being was Russell Crowe and you see his butt and he acts like the Joker the entire time? Those are the questions that 1995's Virtuosity asks. Join us and special returning guest Sarah Long as we deep dive into this ‘90s cyberpunk classic. Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington) is a former cop wrongfully imprisoned (he did kill two innocent people, but it was an accident and he looked cool while he was doing it) performing tests in a VR environment designed to train cops on what to do if a serial killer creates a hostage situation in a Japanese restaurant. The program kills Barnes's virtual partner, and then the serial killer program, SID 6.7 (Crowe) is made real and escapes into reality. Though SID is made up of many baddies, the “dominant” personality is that of Matthew Grimes (Christopher Murray), a super terrorist who killed Barnes's family. Therefore Barnes is the only person who can stop him, so they implant a tracking/kill device into his brain and set him on the hunt. Barnes's de facto partner is criminal psychologist Madison Carter (Kelly Lynch), a single mom with a precocious daughter Karin (Kaley Cuoco). I sure hope that kid doesn't get kidnapped! Will Barnes stop the killer in time? Did he really shoot that woman on the train? Or was it the mass murderer holding her hostage? Why didn't they give that guy clothes before going on TV? And how do you say the name “Fichtner?” Is it like sphincter? All this and more in our latest episode!

We practice traditional medicine, or do we?Because Chinese medicine has roots and writings that go back into misty history, it's easy to imagine we practice much like your average Qing or Ming doctor. But the truth is, the way practitioners worked even just a hundred years ago would be quite foreign to the standards of today. In this conversation with Eric Karchmer we explore some of the themes and historic insights from his new book Prescriptions for Virtuosity, The Post Colonial Struggle of Chinese Medicine.I'm serious when I tell you— it's going to blow your mind.Listen into this discussion of how Chinese medicine became the slow medicine, the brilliant innovation of the early textbooks, and how it is that what you think is the ancient bones of our medicine, is in many ways a new innovation. One wrought not through the communists stripping out the shamanistic practices, but rather by Chinese doctors themselves figuring where they stood in relation to the potency and power of modern biomedicine as it changed the landscape of economics, power and practice.

Who is a Primus Guy, exactly? We turn to Bryan's expertise on the subject (both Guys and Primus) to dig in on one of the 90s' most confounding top-selling bands, Primus. How is it that a band whose angular-yet-heavy take on rock music, centered on one man's virtuosic playing of the BASS (of all things) led to a multi-platinum-selling band? We try to figure it out by tackling Primus' studio debut album, "Frizzle Fry", which features Primus at their heaviest but maybe not quite weirdest. We also imagine a world where Les Claypool is the bassist in Metallica, we hear from Les' parents in their seminal Rolling Stone profile, and we do our due diligence by uncovering the ways in which this album was Proto-Nu and what nu-metal bands took from this meandering, deeply strange journey of a record.
