She's a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and after living in NYC, Washington, DC, and Hawai'i, she currently calls Austin, Texas her home, together with her husband and their awesome little dudes. Šobrīd Pasaules latviešu mākslas centrā Cēsīs skatāma latviešu tēlnieka un gleznotāja Jāņa Mintika  (1944-2014) darbu izstāde. Mākslinieks, kurš piedzima Zalcburgā, ilgus gadus dzīvoja un strādāja Norvēģijā, Bergenā un Taosā, Jaunmeksikas štatā, ir kurzemniekiem veltītā pieminekļa autors Tobago salā. Izstādē aplūkojamas mākslinieka instalācijas, gleznas un grafikas. Izstādes apskati kopā ar Pasaules Latviešu mākslas centra mākslas zinātnieci Baibu Eglīti sākam ar pelēkas krāsas sienu, uz kuras piestiprināts Jāņu vainags, uzrakstīts mākslinieka vārds un uzvārds, kā arī askētisks, bet vienlaikus sarežģīts līniju vilkums. "Tas ir tetovējums. Tetovējums, kas bija uz pleca Jāņa Mintikai sievai Sallijai. Viņa, kad bija atbraukusi, mums to parādīja, un es domāju, ka Jānim arī tāds bija uz pleca," par izstādi stāsta mākslas zinātniece Baiba Eglīte. "Izrādās, ka tas ir Jāņa dzīves simbols, un tas ir viņa paraksts. Tas ir Odina trīszaru krusts jeb trīs kausu krusts, kurš nes sevī informāciju: es kausu paceļu, kausu izdzeru un tad es kausu nolieku. Un kas bija Odins - vikingu dievu dievs. Bet viņš bija arī mūziķu un dzejnieka aizbildnis. Tātad mākslinieki arī pieder pie tās pašas kārtas, un Jānis ir izjutis Odina aicinājumu, tas iet cauri visai viņa dzīvei." "Šī sekošana mākslinieka aicinājumam, Odins ir aicinājis. Par to ir bijis jāmaksā, par to ir bijis jādomā, un Jānis Mintiks to savā dzīvē ir īstenojis," turpina Baiba Eglīte. Eglīte arī norāda, ka Mintiks ir viens no pirmajiem latviešu konceptuālistiem. Jau 70. gadu sākumā viņš ir šo ceļu iesācis iet. "Un, manuprāt, viņš ir vistīrāk, garīgi tīrāk šo ceļu ir izgājis," vērtē Eglīte un min, ka mākslinieku varētu uzskatīt par vienu no latviešu klusajiem ģēnijiem. Jānis Mintiks strādājis par mākslas pedagogu vairākās mācību iestādēs. Savu radošo ceļu Mintiks sāka eļļas un akvareļglezniecībā, pēc tam pievērsās tēlniecībai, veidojot savus darbus metālā, kokā, stikla šķiedrā un stiklā. Piedalījies grupu izstādēs un rīkojis personālizstādes kā latviešu sabiedrībā, tā amerikāņu mākslas pasaulē. Septembris ir Jāņa Mitika jubilejas mēnesis, 16. septembrī atzīmēja viņa 75. dzimšanas dienu. "Vecāki viņam bija aktieri, skaidrs, kādā vidē Milvokos viņš ir audzis, jo Jāņa vecāki bija tie, kas Milvokos nodibināja latviešu teātri. Tēvs esot arī pat Milvokos panācis to, ka Milvoku muzejā ir viena telpa, kas ir veltīta latviešiem," atklāj Eglīte. Iepazīstinot ar Jāņa Mintika darbiem, Eglīte rāda to, ar kuru pati sastapusies kā pirmo. "Man likās tā: kaut kāds norūsējis hlams, kaut kāda caurule vai gāzes vada, vai vēl kaut kāda. Un kas tad galu galā te būtu svarīgs," komentē Eglīte. "Bet, redziet, tikko kā mēs sākām runāt, viņš sāka kustēties, un tad, kad es paliku viena pati ar viņu, neskaroties klāt, viņš sāk kustēties. Man likās, ka Mintiks man no debesīm saka: "Tu zini, vissvarīgākais dzīvē ir saglabāt līdzsvaru." Ja līdzsvars ir izjaukts, vai tas ir cilvēka veselībā, vai tas ir attiecībās, vai tas ir valstu attiecībās, viņu diezgan grūti ir atjaunot. Bet cilvēks to saprot tad, kad viņš ir kritis. Lūk, tas lielais loks, kurš krīt. Krīt mūsu skatiens, nokrīt līdz ar viņu un atkal tiek celts uz augšu. Tātad viņš man saka: tas ir likums, ar ko cilvēkam ir jārēķinās. Tīra. Vienkārša, skarba forma, Un ļoti nopietns saturs iekšā, un tādi ir, manuprāt, visi Mintika darbi." Mākslas centrā ir aplūkojami trīs viņa 1971. gadā darinātie darbi. "Šajā zīmējumā Jāņa Mintika  domāšanā parādās liela interese par vikingu simboliku, bet es domāju, ka tas ir saistāms arī ar tiem procesiem, kādi notika pasaulē 70. gadu sākumā. Tās ir iekustinātas attiecības starp Ameriku un Padomju Savienību. Un šie trijstūri vairākkārtīgi, kas atkārtojas, tas ir karavīru dvēseļu ceļš uz Valhallu. Tātad viņš domā plaši, domā ar simboliem," norāda Eglīte. Jāņa Mintika darbu izstāde Pasaules latviešu mākslas centrā Cēsīs aplūkojama līdz 2019. gada beigām.
