According to the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Inc in Australia, the symptoms of fatigue for drivers of enclosed vehicles may differ from a fatigued motorcyclist. It’s important to recognize these signs. *Driver Fatigue Symptoms include: •loss of concentration •drowsiness, yawning •slow reactions •sore or tired eyes •boredom •feeling irritable and restless •making fewer and larger steering corrections •missing road signs •having difficulty in staying in the lane •having microsleeps. *The symptoms of rider fatigue include: •joint and muscle stiffness •pain or weakness in hands and feet •loss of concentration •slow or impaired judgment and reactions. *Excerpts taken from http://roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/50.html And the scary thing is that although a rider may feel fully awake, they may actually be fatigued without realizing it, and make a judgement error, resulting in crashing on a curve or an accident while overtaking another vehicle. Because riding a motorcycle is different than riding a car, in that it is more demanding both mentally and physically, it’s likely you’ll be tired from the physical challenges rather than boredom. So how to beat this? Who better to ask than four people who ride motorcycles and have experience in dealing with fatigue: a scientist, a pillion, a racer and a long distance rider. Guests on this episode: Sam Marcora A Director of Research at Kent University and a motorcyclist, in 2013 Sam Marcora studied fatigue in motorbike riders on a 3 month ride from London to Beijing and through Central Asia and Tibet. www.kent.ac.uk/sportsciences/staff/academic/s-marcora.html Christophe Barriere Varju An endurance rider and a Motocross Champion, Christophe Barrier Varju has ridden in the Dakar Rally several times, the toughest and most dangerous motorsport race in the world. Included in this latest edition we have Andy Pickford’s marathon release Pareidolia, clocking in at over three & half hours, more sequential melodies from Jeffrey Koepper on Transmitter,, French composer Alpha Lyra emotional cosmic trip on Ultime atome, from the dark side, Approaching Dark Space by Phobos and the mighty melodies of Johan Tronestam on Luther, with many more outstanding sublime musical journeys to savour. Vintage track comes from Pillion’s 1980 Enigmas album, sourced from a original vinyl LP which was never released on CD, because their master tapes and the remaining albums were destroyed in a fire at their record company. Opening for this three hour podcast we have two tracks from Johan’s Luther album, enjoy.   Beth and Kevin Young, 2uptogether, are so passionate about sharing adventures with each other that they ride 2 up, even in the dirt. The've been riding for 19 years, and are advocates for short adventures, close to home. Saying that motorcycle riding has made them closer, Beth & Kevin share their experiences with photographs on social media, hoping to inspire other couples to ride together.  Twitter: 2uptogether Facebook: www.facebook.com/2uptogether Website: http://www.2uptogether.com Youtube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw1iOZraIRbM0VYpUg7PCeg Rider Skills with Bret Tkacs Skills Development Activity: Threshold braking The average experienced rider with or without training stops around at about 70% of the capability of his/her motorcycle and roughly 30% further than the average car. Since most training standards are nearly 40% below the motorcycles capability attending traditional rider training does not help you reach the maximum braking capability your motorcycle offers.  The numbers I have put on the chart below are rounded off to make things simple and are not exact. During guided training your speed should be measured with radar and then adjustments made for brake application.  However in the absence of a school like this in your area this will give you a much better estimate of your ability than the scoring you may have received during any conventional motorcycle training using stopwatch/distance standards. Bret Tkacs~ Motorcycle Skills Expert Setup: 1. Mark off a braking area up to 50’ (15 meters) with chalk on good asphalt or pavement. 2. Make your “begin braking here” point with an easy to see marker such as a bottle or large cone. 3. Check your speedometer accuracy against a GPS or phone app (speedometers or commonly 10% optimistic on speed giving you the impression you stop better than you do) 4. Practice steady approach speeds (each speed on the chart. 5. Have a fellow rider observe you as you practice braking at your “begin braking here” point to ensure you do not begin slowing or braking early. The Drill: 1. Approach the “begin braking here” point at the speed on the chart, do not slow or brake before the point. 2. When the markers disappear from your peripheral view then begin braking stopping in the shortest distance you safety can. 3. Put down your side stand and take the distance to the leading edge of your tire and compare it against the chart. 4. Do not move up to the next speed until you are relaxed and consistent at the lower speeds. 5. To get a truly accurate measure or to safely learn to brake from speeds higher the listed below it is recommended to work with professional instructors training in this type of skill development such as Puget Sound Safety’s; Advanced Street Skills program (pssnw.com) Show Sponsors Max BMW BestRest Products Green Chile Adventure Gear Motobriiz PSSOR IMS Products In Association With: Good Adventure Company Music by Jason Shaw at www.audionautix.com

Shorai Lithium Batteries Phuc Lam from Shorai Inc, and also an avid motorcyclist, explains lithium batteries in this episode. Since 2010, Shorai has been the maker of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Shorai LFX batteries are up to 80 percent lighter than equal performance lead acid batteries, which can mean saving anywhere from 2 to 20 pounds, depending what kind of bike you ride. They operate at a higher voltage range and maintain a higher voltage level during cranking, which means your motorcycle starts more quickly.  The lithium batteries can be charged using a lead acid charger or by using the charger specifically designed for Shorai’s LFX lithium batteries. And the Shorai lithium batteries are compatible with modern motorcycle charging systems. Easy to install, Shorai batteries come with a three year pro-rated warranty and can be purchased at Shorai dealers or online on their website.  Website: www.shoraipower.com Garmin Zumo 395LM Jim talks with Cesar Palacios, Media Relations Associate from Garmin International Website: http://www.garmin.com/ ** Garmin® Thrills with New zūmo® Motorcycle Navigators ** Source: Garmin Press Release Feb 16, 2016 OLATHE, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the new zūmo 395LM and zūmo 595LM motorcycle navigators. The rugged, weatherproof (*1) models offer Garmin Adventurous Routing™ so riders can select the level of twists and hills on every journey. The zūmo 395/595LM presents innovative features specifically designed for motorcyclists with the introduction of rider alerts, helpful smart features, new streaming music options and much more. “What’s exciting about the new zūmo models is that they are designed to find those adventurous winding roads that riders typically crave,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The ability to stream Spotify music will also enhance the thrill of every ride.” Garmin Adventurous Routing™ options elevate the ride by finding routes with curves and hills, while limiting major highways that offer unchanging and often wearisome roads. In order to enhance the adventure, both zūmo models allow riders to control music and media from a compatible smartphone or MP3 player. (*2) The 595 model lets riders stream popular music services2 such as Spotify® and Pandora® right into their headset or helmet (sold separately), offering easy control options using the glove-friendly zūmo screen display. Garmin recognizes safety as a top priority for motorcyclists – that’s why both zūmo models include new rider alerts to help increase situational awareness. Riders can be notified of upcoming sharp curves, nearby red light and speed cameras (*3), animal crossings and many other useful alerts. In addition, riders will be prompted with relevant state helmet law notifications (US/CAN) when crossing state borders. The new zūmo devices allow riders to make and receive calls (*4) while their hands remain firmly on the handlebars. Spoken directions can also be heard when paired with a compatible headset or helmet (sold separately) in order to stay conveniently connected during a ride. The zūmo 595LM model can pair seamlessly with the Smartphone link app (*5) from Garmin to give riders access to new exciting features for motorcyclists. The use of the app allows the zūmo 595LM to conveniently display smartphone information alongside the navigation screen. Riders can view texts, app notifications and other helpful data such as live weather radar and traffic (subscription may be required). Additionally, the new LiveTrack feature lets riders share their ride so friends can track their location. The new motorcycle navigators offer a rugged, glove-friendly design that can endure fuel vapors, UV rays and harsh weather.1 The bright sunlight-readable display of the zūmo 395LM has a 4.3-inch touchscreen while the zūmo 595LM boasts a high-resolution 5-inch transflective touchscreen display to further enhance visibility. Both devices include lifetime map (*6) updates for North America along with motorcycle-specific points of interest (POIs) such as repair services, dealers and more. The new devices maintain the legacy zūmo features that riders have come to expect. Some of these features include: Dynamic Fuel Stops, which suggests fuel stops based on the distance the rider’s fuel is expected to last; the Service History Log to help simplify bike maintenance records; Roundtrip Routing allows riders to plan their route based on time, distance or location; preloaded Foursquare® data offers millions of new and popular places; and Garmin Real Directions™ guides riders using recognizable landmarks and traffic lights. The new zūmo series is compatible with Garmin VIRB® action cameras (sold separately) to start and stop recording footage directly from the zūmo display screen. Riders can also monitor motorcycle tire pressure on the zūmo display with the Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor system from Garmin (sold separately). The zūmo 395LM has a suggested retail price of $599.99 and the zūmo 595LM is $899.99. Both devices are expected to be available in April of this year. For more information, visit garmin.com/zumo. The zūmo 395LM and zūmo 595LM are the latest from Garmin’s consumer automotive segment, the leading worldwide provider of portable navigation devices for automobiles, motorcycles and trucks.
