VIII Calle Antonio Grilo. Madrid.

What if the key to deep healing and self-discovery isn't just in the substances we take, but in how we prepare for and integrate them? In this illuminating and thought-provoking conversation, Dr. Scott Lyons sits down with somatic therapist, teacher, and author Manuela Mischke-Reeds to explore the evolving landscape of psychedelics, trauma healing, and embodiment practices.Together, they unpack the importance of preparation, integration, and the often-overlooked nuances of psychedelic experiences. Manuela shares her personal journey growing up between cultures, the role of somatics in healing trauma, and why true transformation requires more than just taking a substance—it demands a relationship with it.From understanding "set and setting" to the dangers of chasing peak experiences, this episode dives deep into how we can navigate the psychedelic space responsibly. Scott and Manuela also discuss how practices like Continuum Movement, somatic awareness, and radical self-inquiry provide alternative pathways to healing and wholeness.Topics We Break Down:The difference between recreational drug use and psychedelic-assisted therapyHow psychedelics can dismantle trauma patterns—and why integration is keyThe power of "set and setting" and how cultural context influences healingWhy chasing "peak experiences" can become another form of bypassingHow somatic practices like Continuum Movement can support psychedelic integrationThe dangers of mistaking activation for truth in trauma healingThe importance of staying in inquiry and dismantling expert mindsetsThis episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the deeper layers of psychedelics, somatics, and the journey of self-discovery.

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with Prof. Manuela Consonni, director of Hebrew University's Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism. Consonni, a leading scholar of Holocaust memory, gender, and post-war European culture, decided to mark Yom Hashoah, Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day, with an exhibition at the Mount Scopus campus called, "Faces of Women's Resistance." The exhibition looks at how women -- Jewish and non-Jewish -- resisted the Nazi regime. Like men, many were fighters, partisans and rescuers, but also the sheer survival of their family was put on the shoulders of many mothers. We discuss definitions of resistance and what means were available to women during the Nazi regime. And finally, we delve into the use of Holocaust language when discussing the hostages kept by Hamas in Gaza since October 7, 2023. So this week, we ask Prof. Manuela Consonni, what matters now? This month we had a compelling conversation with Manuela Picq, who is a Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Political Science and Sexuality, Women's and Gender Studies at Amherst College (USA). However, this academic work is just part of Manuela's life as she lives between Massachusetts and Ecuador where she is an activist defending the water and Indigenous livelihoods. Manuela blends academics, activism, legal action, and land defense. Manuela gives us insight into what it means to be a water defender and what the struggle means over time and the duration of a life. She highlights the importance of building a community and complimenting each other within the wider fabric of a resistance effort. We are reminded that nothing can be defended that is bigger than ourselves on our own. Manuela gives us insight into her experiences and the things that have happened to her within working against extractivist forces.

Although Indigenous peoples are often perceived as standing outside political modernity, Savages and Citizens: How Indigeneity Shapes the State (University of Arizona Press, 2025) by Dr. Andrew Canessa & Dr. Manuela Lavinas Picq takes the provocative view that Indigenous people have been fundamental to how contemporary state sovereignty was imagined, theorized, and practiced. Delving into European political philosophy, comparative politics, and contemporary international law, this open-access book shows how the concept of indigeneity has shaped the development of the modern state. The exclusion of Indigenous people was not a collateral byproduct; it was a political project in its own right. The book argues that indigeneity is a political identity relational to modern nation-states and that Indigenous politics, although marking the boundary of the state, are co-constitutive of colonial processes of state-making. In showing how indigeneity is central to how the international system of states operates, the book forefronts Indigenous peoples as political actors to reject essentializing views that reduce them to cultural “survivors” rooted in the past. With insights drawn from diverse global contexts and empirical research from Bolivia and Ecuador, this work advocates for the relevance of Indigenous studies within political science and argues for an ethnography of sovereignty in anthropology. Savages and Citizens makes a compelling case for the centrality of Indigenous perspectives to understand the modern state from political theory to international studies. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Send us a textWhat if the person you trust the most could slip away in the dead of night, leaving nothing but a trail of blood and unanswered questions? Join us as we unravel the chilling murder case of Manuela Allen, a beloved teacher and mother from Olney, Texas. Her disappearance in the early hours of a July morning left her family in turmoil, unaware of the horror that had unfolded while they slept. This episode delves into the eerie discovery of bloodstains throughout her home and the chilling realization that Manuela had been brutally attacked. In our investigation, we spotlight the curious clue of bicycle tracks near Lake Cooper, a vital lead in identifying the suspect connected to Manuela's murder. As we piece together the events of that fateful night, the audacity of the attack suggests a personal vendetta, one that her family and community were left to grapple with. We explore how Manuela's family, absorbed in their own world of headphones and deep slumber, knew nothing of the terror that unfolded mere feet away. The episode peels back layers of intrigue, from defensive wounds to eyewitness accounts, revealing the suspect's possible familiarity with Manuela and her home. Finally, we explore the unsettling motive behind this heinous crime, focusing on Julius Mullins, whose life intertwined with Manuela's through past relationships. As we dissect his motives and the irrational thought processes that led to his guilty plea, we aim to understand the psychological complexities driving such unthinkable acts. Mullins' sentencing to 55 years serves as a grim reminder of the destructive power of unresolved emotions. Through our narrative, we not only investigate the crime itself but also reflect on its devastating impact on a close-knit community, seeking to comprehend the depths of human behavior amidst unimaginable tragedy.www.texaswineandtruecrime.com
