Stacie Burrows & Shannon Noel are Mommy Tonk, two moms, one stage, anything can happen. These singer/songwriter/comedian/actress/moms met quite by accident and teamed up to harmonize their way through motherhood. We talk the good of following your gut, saying yes even when you only have twenty minutes of material prepared when they want you to have an hour, and how to be a mom and stay a human being at the same time. Happy Mother's Day to all! (No mothers were harmed in the making of this episode. Just a few puppies and a super cute baby goat. I'm kidding. About the baby goat, it was just regular cute. Joking. Sheesh.) FYI - this is A-May-Zing May and we're doubling episodes every Wednesday for the month! Enjoy this first of two new episodes.

Chasing Artists with Xenja

This week on Chasing Artists with XENJA, we chat with Shannon Noel and Stacie Burrows about the creation of their musical comedy duo Mommy Tonk where they've taken the first decade of motherhood and turned it into a hilarious musical comedy act! Guest Bio Stacie Burrows and Shannon Noel of the LA-based musical comedy duo Mommy Tonk electrify the stage as they sing outrageously funny songs about, of all things, the monotony of domesticity. These two saucy moms have taken the first decade of motherhood and turned it into anthems about lost youth (We Used To Be You), battle-cries for big-box stores (Gotta Go To Target), ballads about marital strife (Last Fight), odes to organic produce (Farm Box) and love songs for husbands (Here's Me Communicating My Needs). Their comedy and music are both evergreen and ever-changing. Each stage of motherhood is inspiration for the next song, sketch or live show. Their harmonies are as tight as The Everly Brothers, but the lyrics are more akin to Tenacious D. It takes a village to raise a kid, they say, but this is no ordinary village. This village is racy, outspoken, and unabashedly authentic. MOMMY TONK wasn't born yesterday. They've been at it for over a decade. And by “it” we mean they've been sitting in bars writing lyrics on cocktail napkins while the Xbox babysat their children and their husbands. Stacie & Shannon met while getting drunk backstage at an Expressing Motherhood show. Burrows, from Texas and Noel, from Kentucky have Southern sensibilities in that they will look you right in the eye and give you a firm handshake as they politely tell you to, “Go fuck yourself, ma'am” as they do in their song Bless Her Heart. And they will do it with such a sweet harmony that it will make you forgive them instantly. It's been said that Mommy Tonk is not suitable for work, children, or anyone with standards. But Mommy Tonk is suitable for any audience hungry for ballsy originality. Often backed by their Americana Roots trio, The Assless Chaps, Mommy Tonk has toured the U.S., packing clubs such as: Zanies Nashville, Throckmorton Theatre Mill Valley, House of Blues Hollywood, Flapper's Burbank, Stagecoach Country Music Festival, The Boston Comedy Festival, Three Clubs Hollywood, The Comedy Store Hollywood, Mohawk Austin, The Laughing Derby Louisville, and Wow Summit 2018. And when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down live entertainment, the ladies kept on cranking out new quarantine-inspired music like Never Been This Close (to leaving you), MyLuftPalloon, My Mumu, and My Wifi Hates Me. They continue to stay connected with their audience through Zoom shows and social media. Their debut album NAILED IT is available on Amazon, Spotify, and Apple Music. People who have seen their live shows have compared them to Tenacious D, Flight of the Conchords, and Garfunkel and Oates. We used to think WE were the pros at having the irreverent "mom convos" that are unsuitable for kids... That is, until MOMMY TONK came into the Mom Life Yo studio to show us how it's done! The cherry on top was this musical comedy duo SINGING every mom's true feelings in a few songs from their latest album, "Nailed It." Listen in to us having some honest talk with our spirit animals, Shannon and Stacie, and sing along to them strumming our pain with their fingers.

I was born and raised in Oklahoma. It was almost required that at some point I listen to country music which I did. More specifically, my family loved the sounds of honky-tonk. I grew up with my mom blaring Merle Haggard, Hank Williams (Sr. & Jr.), Lefty Frizell and George Jones on the car radio. Much the same way I blare Lady Gaga and 2 Chains now. I digress... Let's just say I have a deep fondness and appreciation for honky-tonk music. And if you've ever listened to my podcast then you know I love funny moms. Thankfully, Stacie Burrows and Shannon Noel make up the musical comedy duo, Mommy Tonk, combing honky-tonk with funny shit for moms! I feel like I struck gold! Their songs are brutally honest, knee-slapping funny, and gut-busting graphic. Need more adjectives? Just listen to their stuff already! They explain how they were brought together by Lindsay Kavet during an Expressing Motherhood show and instantly bonded.   Soon after meeting they created MT and now they tour the US singing songs with titles like, "Get off your ass, you f**king a**hole", "The PTA Fundraiser" and "I'm Just Sayin". Yee-haw!  Seriously, you have to listen to this episode to grasp the full brilliance of their songs. They played a couple of songs on the show. Now you can play them on repeat if you've got a hankerin'. Both Shannon and Stacie have backgrounds in standup, improv and sketch, making this the perfect outlet for their comedic voice. And I dare say it's not just for women. My husband even says he found himself humming along to their songs when he was on quality control duty. He's also hinted more than once that he would like my Mommy Tonk t-shirt. (It is a pretty sweet ass shirt). Mommy Tonk has a couple of songs on iTunes, but I would encourage you to see them live if possible. And lucky for you they're currently on tour with The Assless Chaps.  Check out their tour dates below or on their website to find out when to go. You can also saddle up and follow them on Twitter @MommyTonk, or Facebook and Instagram.  Now I'm gonna mosey off to bed with the gentle sounds of nostalgia tickling my funny bone.

Ep. 36 Audrina Patridge, Betsey Johnson On Being Fashionable Moms

Motherhood in Hollywood is on-location this week!  I hit the road to check out the Big City Moms Biggest Baby Shower in LA.  I met some inspiring mom friends and got up close and personal with cool new products for parents.  I'm going to list them all here but that doesn't mean you can skip listening to the show. You would miss me ask really ridiculous questions like the mom-dork that I am. It's a tasty treat for your earholes! Betsey Johnson's energy is contagious! 3! LOL Mom-To-Be Audrina Patridge                     I chatted with Audrina Patridge (The Hills, DWTS) about her plans to balance work and family once her little one arrives. And I got to ask her what she's having! Any guesses?  And eccentric doesn't even begin to describe the energy of fashion designer Betsey Johnson. She was there to support her little brother (aww!) Robert as he spreads the word about Cheeky Monkey-a peanut butter snack for infants to help reduce the risk of peanut allergies. I could have listened to them talk and rib each other all night.  You'll love what she says about a new business she's opening in Mexico and how she manages 14 brands bearing her famous name. Former Miss Californias Melissa Chaty & Veena Crownholm Mom of 2 and actress Beverly Mitchell (7th Heaven, The Secret Life of The American Teenager) shared her must-have item for getting through the day.  Her answer might surprise you! And former MIH guest/Miss California Veena Crownhlom and ClubMomMe's Rachel Pitzel shared their coolest find at the event (Doona-we're looking at you!) Dr. Tanya Altmann gave me some insights from her new book "What To Feed Your Baby" so that I can hopefully get Chan to eat something other than bread. And I met some AWESOME moms from Expressing Motherhood-a moth style monologue show that tackles parenting topics.  The gals from Mommy Tonk serenaded me with a catchy song that I kept humming all the way home. And finally the women of the Knightsbridge Nanny Agency shared insights on what makes a great nanny.  These ladies know their stuff!  This episode is PACKED with funny interviews, helpful insights on parenting products, and exclusive thoughts on motherhood from celebrity moms that you'll only hear on MIH. You'll also only hear me laughing at my own jokes from time to time. Bonus for you!  Huge thank you to Risa and Leslie from Big City Moms for having me at the event.  Can't wait until next year!
