In this heartfelt and hilarious episode, Kiki and Medinah are back in their original studio space catching up on life—both the beautiful and the hard parts. Kiki opens up about the recent passing of her grandfather, sharing intimate, funny, and touching memories that remind us how fleeting life can be. Medinah reflects on her trip to Pittsburgh for Mother's Day and the emotional rollercoaster of spending time with her grandmother, who's battling dementia. The duo also dives into a trending quote from Marlon Wayans about not marrying because of his mom—and unpack the emotional and generational dynamics around “emotional incest,” legacy, and mother-in-law drama. This Mother's Day, we honor the incredible strength and love of the mothers who shape our lives for the better. Those of us lucky enough to have them, or other nurturing parental figures, are truly blessed. But remember, not all maternal bonds are pure. What you think is love may be something darker, something that lingers long after the last breath. Proceed with caution, for not all mothers are what they appear, some don't live up to the title, if they're even living at all. In this special Mother's Day episode, Dr. Kim Kimberling sits down with bestselling author Melanie Shankle to talk about her latest book, Here Be Dragons. Together, they unpack the complexities of generational trauma and explore what it means to break old cycles in order to build a new legacy of healthy relationships. It's a conversation that's honest, refreshing, and full of humor. Whether you're a mother or not, this episode has something for you! Episode highlights include: Generational trauma affects emotional growth and relationships. Self-worth can be deeply impacted by parental relationships. Humor can be a coping mechanism for deeper issues. Recognizing unhealthy patterns is crucial for personal growth. Parenting requires intentionality and awareness of past traumas. Melanie embraced her daughter's individuality instead of molding her. Healing can come from being the parent you wished you had. True love is built on friendship and authenticity. Identifying generational trauma requires honest self-assessment. Creating a positive legacy is essential for future generations. God's timing is perfect in relationships. Healing is a journey that takes baby steps. There can be beauty in the ashes of our past. Couples Conversation Guide: Main takeaway: If you were raised in the midst of unhealthy relationships, take heart—there is hope in Christ for a better future. Healing from past wounds opens the door to the freedom and joy of healthy, life-giving relationships. Along the journey, boundaries will protect your peace, forgiveness will soften your heart, and Christ must remain the foundation of it all. Questions to Discuss: What messages or behaviors from our families growing up do we find ourselves repeating—intentionally or not—in our relationship or with our children? When we face conflict or stress, do our reactions feel like our own—or do they echo how our parents or caregivers responded? Are there parts of our past—such as experiences of neglect, abuse, shame, or loss—that we haven't fully processed and might be impacting how we show up for each other and our children? What do you hope your legacy will be? Quotes from today's episode: "It's okay to not be perfect." “You've gotta have your truthtellers” “There are things we may not see as big, but they become big.” “I always deflected with humor because I didn't want to feel anything too deeply.” “They've achieved all these things that the world says is success, but they're still empty.” “It's so healing to be the thing in someone else's life that you wish you would have had in your own.” “I didn't get to have that mother, but I get to be that mother.” “There is something so beneficial about having someone who's not your friend, validate some of the experiences you've been through.” MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Use our Self Check Up Guide as an opportunity for honest self reflection. On this episode we sit and chat with one of my favorite students and national champion wrestler Mason Milsaps. This episode was a long time coming, a year plus to be exact. As a 7th grader Mason had pleaded with me to let him on the podcast so he could share his story. I told him that we could bring him back his junior or senior year after he had won some state titles. Fast forward a little bit and this young man has done quite a bit more than that. He will be off next week to compete at the world games representing the red, white, and blue. Before he left we made it a point to bring him in studio and chop it up. This incredible young man is more than just a personality and a good wrestler. He recently lost his mother a few years back and struggles with Dyslexia. By all accounts he should be trending down and has every excuse to not be doing good. To no one's surprise though he has bounced back and used his hardships as a springboard for success. I wanted to honor this young man by sharing his story with the world and hope you guys enjoy listening to it just as much as I had interviewing him. We wish you luck Mason on your upcoming competition. There is not a doubt in anyone's mind that knows you that you will be successful in capturing your dreams. Please keep Mason on your radar because this young man is going places. Love you kid.

Grief is a tricky thing—it shows up when you least expect it, lingering like that weird shadow that keeps following you. But what happens when that shadow isn't just your grief, but something darker? After losing her mother, she started hearing footsteps when no one was around, doors creaking open on their own, and whispers echoing through the halls. But are these just the signs of a grieving heart, or is something more sinister lurking behind the walls? In this episode, Shanti reflects on a successful Mother's Day photo shoot while Antoinette enjoys a new, lovely haircut. For politics, we keep it brief and discuss the threat to housing policies posed by Trump's recent federal cuts. We discuss the Met Gala and share our thoughts on the overall theme of Black Dandyism. Do we think folks embodied it? In the end, we discuss the scholar, Mark Lamont Hill's presence on the seemingly low-brow Joe Budden podcast and the effect of intellectual discourse in spaces most often dominated by misinformation. The Nats were swept by the Cardinals on Mother's Day Sunday as they lost the series finale 6-1. Mark & Al address the growing elephant in the clubhouse after the 5th straight loss: Is the seat getting hotter for Manager Davey Martinez?(12:05) Nathaniel Lowe's solo homer was the only source of offense in defeat. The bats were so quiet this weekend, that the only other Washington runs scored in the entire series were off of Dylan Crews' 2-run HR on Saturday. Hear Mark point out how much better Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas is against the Nationals than he is against most other opponents in the past few seasons.(17:30) Dylan Crews made a beautiful diving back-handed catch in the top of the 9th and it is an example of his great outfield defense since getting called up.(23:10) MacKenzie Gore gave up a 1st inning homer and four runs overall in just shy of seven innings of work. Gore's exit was a tad curious as it seemed like he asked out of the game with two outs and about to face the 9th hitter.(31:00) Jarlin Susana, the highly rated AA pitcher , has been placed on the 7-day IL due to a Grade 1 UCL sprain. Susana was part of the trade package in the 2022 Juan Soto trade to the Padres.(35:00) Cade Cavalli has been optioned to AAA and was pulled in the 3rd inning on Saturday. Mark explains the ramifications of Cavalli's roster status and most importantly when he might take the mound for the Nationals this year.

Mother's Day Fails! Ally had a crappy Mother's Day, but learned it was nothing compared to our listeners, especially the woman whose dog was eaten by a hawk. Glennon's son, Chase, joins Glennon for a special conversation with his hero, author Ocean Vuong, to discuss: 1. Chase shares with Ocean the impact his work has had in his life–and Glennon thanks Ocean for helping mother her son. 2. What Ocean learned from his mother about how to navigate being an Asian boy in America–and Glennon's recognition that she did not prepare Chase for the same realities. 3. Ocean's new book, Time is a Mother, and why watching his own mother die gave Ocean a deep empathy and connection to every person. 4. His relationship to maleness–and why Ocean is interested in “staying and complicating” masculinity. About Ocean: Ocean Vuong, author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds, and the New York Times bestselling novel On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a recipient of the 2019 MacArthur "Genius Grant" and the winner of the Whiting Award and the T.
