This week's episode deals with the topic of preventing SUIDs/SIDS/infant loss. Please listen with care. This week, The New York Times published an article about the sudden and unexpected rise in SUIDs (Sudden Unexplained Infant Death) in the US, hypothesizing about the potential causes of this very unfortunate trend. So there was no better time than now to dig into the topic. In this episode I'll share my experience working with newborn & baby clients, who often come to me inadvertently in unsafe sleep situations, and why I think that happens so often. I'll also share some of the examples you guys gave of unsafe sleep practices you didn't know about until you found me, and finally - I'll fully unpack the AAP safe sleep guidelines so it's hopefully easier for you to make informed decisions about your baby's sleep! In today's episode, I talk a lot about following AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) safe sleep guidelines. “Samwise Gamgee, my dear hobbit –indeed, Sam my dearest hobbit, friend of friends.” There's something spectacularly lovely about a true friend.A friend who loves what you love, who understands your deep longings, and who helps you see the things that are truly beautiful --even in the midst of brokenness. A friendship like that is a gift from God. Since the dawn of sin, friendships have been broken. All relationships are fraught and sometimes the obstacles to meaningful friendships can feel insurmountable. Tune in as we think through a Biblical definition for friendship, consider how we are designed for friendship, and then chat through a few practicalities.

Today I'm sharing my tips - how to prevent it from happening, what to do if it happens once or twice to stop it from happening again, and how to make the transition successfully to a bed if all else fails. I know, I know. Stay with me here. I'm NOT saying there is no chance your baby won't have any sleep struggles at 4 months. But I AM absolutely saying that there is a very, very good chance they won't....and if they do struggle, A) it might not happen when they're 4 months old and B) there are many things you can do proactively to make it as painless as possible (including sleep training them before you even get to 4 months). In today's episode, I'll explain exactly why!Below are the two previous episodes I mentioned today, check them out!The Truth About "Gentle Sleep Training" and "Cry It Out"Sleep Mythbusting: Feeding On Demand & Night WeaningLoved this episode? Becoming a mom can rock your world - all the sudden you're thrust into this entirely new chapter of your life where it's all consuming, entirely life-altering, and wholly identity changing to say the least. Somehow time moves so slowly (on a loop of feed, diaper, sleep, repeat) and yet quickly at the same time (they're already sitting up??) For me, I felt strangely united with every single woman who came before me who had entered this journey, but also weirdly isolated because it was entirely new to me and know one knew exactly what I was going through. Community and connection were my saving grace. But, it can be so hard to make friends who are in this similar phase of life with you - especially because the main question can be "is the fact that we have similar aged children all we have in common?" I bring in a fellow mom, Kim Craven (known to all the kids as Kimmie!), that I met at our kids' preschool. She is the queen of organizing a group text event and currently we are both experiencing so many firsts together - our first born children entering school, first time navigating kids squabbling in class, etc. I plan to make this topic a limited recurring series where I bring in other preschool parents as we discuss this unique phase of life! Although, even if you don't have preschool kids, I think what we talk about is pretty universal - how do you put yourself out there and make new friends? Learn more about your ad choices. "She woke up for 15 minutes during her nap...WHY? How can I make her sleep?" "He played for 20 minutes with his trucks after bedtime, how can I make him sleep instead?" These are total normal questions I get from clients, and here is what I tell them, and I want you to know: You can't. You cannot control your child's eyelids closing and falling asleep. Moreso, I don't want you to, and I don't care at all if either of the above scenarios occur. These are totally normal things! In today's episode, I want to help you release the urge to try and make your baby or toddler the perfect sleeper. No one is. Instead? My goal through the process for any client (and anyone listening to this!) is that your child is given the gift of knowing how to put themselves to sleep (and back to sleep when they wake!) and you, as the parent, have the gift of being able to release. Release the urge to feel that you should or even can control their exact sleep stats (leave me alone, Nanit!) and instead have the confidence that you A) are offering your child sleep at times that are appropriate B) trusting your child has the skills and will do with that time what they want and C) you have the tools to know when to make a change or seek help if something changes that is really abnormal. Guilty of having tried melatonin to get a restless kid to sleep? You're very much not alone. Today I'm going to do a bit of a deep dive into melatonin use in kids - what melatonin really is, what data supports using it for children, when NOT to use it for children (spoiler - in the vast majority of kids, we don't want to), and why we want to avoid it. Most of all, I'll share some tactical things you can think about to help your child sleep without using any medications, and what to do if none of them seem to work!Loved this episode?
