This week the NIA podcast is back to it's original, and less crazy, format. Tony sits down with Alan to discuss the comics, art and storytelling of Scottish creator Tom Gauld. They focus in on the two graphic novels Mooncop and Goliath but also discuss his strip work and his more recent children's story book. You can find the work of Alan and his tribe of Penned Guins over at his site here and follow him on Twitter here. Many thanks for listening.

In this week’s interview, Chief Correspondent Steve Scher talks with cartoonist Tom Gauld as he engages everyone with a rudimentary recall of their old science classes as well as those who consider themselves buffs of the contemporary physical and natural world. Breaking his pattern of lampooning writers, poets, and literary classics, Gauld skewers hapless scientists, nanobots, and puzzling theorems. Take an uproarious look at the world of science and tech through Gauld’s comics—and get an insider’s look and stay in the know about what’s going on in this moment at Town Hall Seattle. Tom Gauld is a cartoonist and illustrator. He has weekly comic strips in The Guardian and New Scientist and his comics have been published in The New York Times and The Believer, and on the cover of The New Yorker. Tom Gauld -- a cartoonist, illustrator of comics and covers for the New Yorker and The Believer. His weekly cartoon about the arts for The Guardian newspaper is a wry, often deadpan favorite among writers. He is extremely prolific, author of more than a dozen books of comics, including You're Just Jealous of My Jetpack and most recently Mooncop. The lunar cop is perfectly Gauldian character - doesn't say much, spends a lot of time walking the barren landscape, is pretty lonesome and quaint. Virginia met with Tom before his talk at Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just an hour's drive from our studio. The challenge was finding a quiet spot to record in Harvard square...at rush hour. Music: "Feeding Pigeons" - Poddington Bear Ad Music: "Joy in the Restaurant" - David Szesztay
This week, Liberty and Rebecca discuss Three Dark Crowns, The Bestseller Code, Mooncop, and more books. This show has been sponsored by ThirdLove and The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis.
Another Previews catalog showed up on their doorsteps, so it's time to gaze into the tomorrow of September 2016 and see what catches Mike and Greg's fancy. Carthago! Mooncop! Light! American Blood! Elvis! 2000 AD Prog 2000! Attack on Titan! Magazine-sized Love & Rockets! Cerebus! ATARI! ATARI?!?!? Yes, ATARI! In fact, this episode not only covers the catalog Green section (as in, the greener grass you keep seeing from the Big Two side of the fence), but delves into a decades-spanning video console discussion. So whether you dig Thrill Power, Nintendo Power, both, or neither, there's a little something for everyone in this first episode in the lads' Previews double-header! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. This episode is brought to you by Third Eye Comics. Enjoy your funny books.
In this episode of Watch.Read.Listen., we discuss the issues with Fanboys, arguing for more inclusiveness in the various fan cultures. We break down four main problems that we've observed both in others and ourselves: 1) fan tribalism, 2) gatekeepers, 3) "cheer pressure" (coined by Brady from Hello Internet and Numberphile), and 4) lack of critical thought around their fandom. On the more serious side, we discussed briefly the death of comic creator Darwyn Cooke. His loved ones encourage donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Hero Initiative, which is dedicated to helping comic creators in need. This Week: Duane - Stuff You Missed in History Class (two-parter on Hercules Mulligan in particular); Marathon Man (1976) and the Canon episode on it; Free Comic Book Day @ Bedrock City Comics, Love & Rockets, Mooncop by Tom Gauld; Rachel Rising Vol 1-2 by Terry Moore. David - Shock Waves podcast (from the hosts of Killer POV); Bloodcast; The Damn Fine Cast Devan Faraci's "I am Biased" article. Opening clip is from Portlandia.
