Welcome to the 8th episode of our Trilogies series. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at The Apu Trilogy directed by Satyajit Ray. This episode we are looking at comic book movie cinema. The main subject of this trilogy just had their 85th birthday. Batman himself created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. This episode we discuss and review The Dark Knight Trilogy: Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Each starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and directed by Christopher Nolan. After Batman & Robin bombed critically and earned a modest intake at the box office, the Batman franchise lay dormant for a while. Films like a fifth Batman film set to have George Clooney return as Batman was cancelled, along with a Batman: Year One adaptation. Christopher Nolan fresh off the indie success of Following, Memento and also Insomnia, his first big studio film, was tasked to bring the character back to life. His take on the Batman mythos was a lot more grounded in realism and more character based and less of the Toyetic films Joel Schumacher were directing last time. Nolan's three Batman films are some of the best and influential superhero films of all time and he really shows you how its done. He tells a great and moving cinematic tale over three films and finishes the trilogy (mostly) in a satisfying way. You can find The Dark Knight trilogy to stream on Max and you can also find it on DVD/Blu-Ray.We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we also hope you enjoy this episode.Stay Tuned for more!During the podcast we talk about this man: comic creator and writer Bill Finger. Bill Finger for a long time was not credited for co-creating Batman while Bob Kane received sole credit. He was a key figure in creating that character and actually had a lot of substantial input into bringing Batman to life. You can learn more about his story in the documentary Batman & Bill. You can see the trailer here. Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws which is a available to watch in the US & the UK on Amazon and Apple TV. Show notes provided by Joe Peluso Bruce Wayne/Batman is now in his 85th year! That's amazing! Thousands of tales have thrilled the legion of fans who have followed The Caped Crusader from the crime infested back alleys of Gotham to "apocalyptic" worlds populated by monstrous fire pits!  Mobsters, super-villains, demons and aliens have all met defeat atthe gloved hands of The Dark Knight. On countless occasions, brainsover brawn has won the day for this fearless crimefighter. Thesuperstitious cowardly lot of deviants and skels fear his rage andwrath, and quiver and quake at his awesome visage framed against anunforgiving moon. He is an "urban legend" that melts into the shadows when his grim work is painfully accomplished.  But there was a time when this "creature of the night" was still learning how to hunt down his prey. A time in the shrouded past when his nights were fluid andfraught with decisions and actions that did not always lead tovictory.   Join your host, James, Chris, and Joe as they explore one of TheBatman's seminal undertakings--the thirteen issue opus--"Batman: The Long Halloween"! The brainchild of writer/editor Archie Goodwin, this story is the direct sequel to "Batman: Year One". It is populated by a cadre of career criminals and freaky fiends who would turn Gotham into a warzone.Creators Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale weave a tale of villainy and viciousness, danger and deceit that will leave guessing to the very end!   As the seasons come and go, leading from one harrowing holiday tothe next, the body count mounts and the fledgling Batman continues to be stymied by the Holiday Killer. Seamlessly and artfully accompanied by the stylish renderings of Tim Sale, "Batman:The Long Halloween" is a classic tale that builds to a fever pitch. It belongs on the bookshelf of all Batman aficionados.. It is one of the truly greathighlights in the 85 year career of The Dark Knight!

Send us a Text Message.TGTPTU reaches the beginning of the end of Season 12 as the team covers THE DARK KNIGHT (2008), the penultimate NOLAN VOID film in our temporal pincer pairing movement.  Rebounding from the only moderate success of The Prestige, Sir Chris creates a mega-blockbuster with The Dark Knight, his follow-up to Batman Begins and a film that compresses at minimum two movie's worth of story into one film in order to prevent promising Warner Brothers another sequel. (Spoiler for last week's episode, Nolan makes a third Batman film that 75% of TGTPTU hosts think is great.) The Dark Knight is also a film that changed how the Academy compiled its Best Picture Oscar category. Oddly, this season's final pairing matches last season's release years for Aronofsky's pincered final middle pairing with The Wrestler released the same year as The Dark Knight and Black Swan the same as Inception. (No comment back from Darren's people on his feelings for having developed so much of Batman Year One for the Warners only to be led into making his The Fountain for the Bros in 2006.) Unfortunately, further research this episode was stymied by Jack stuck in France fighting extradition back to the States and unable to make our final The Dark Knight trilogy episode. Fortunately, our three consistent hosts are pretty good about guessing facts about flicks, like this pairing the first the entire season both shot by the great Wally Pfister (what? hardly even know her) with The Dark Knight being Nolan's first film with scenes shot on Imax (but ignore Thomas's misinformation about Inception also being shot on Imax; he's like a dog chasing a car or a British colonialist burning down a jungle or brunch.) Listen close, take lots of notes, and discover what words The Joker finds funny; how to make visual art summaries for an auditory medium; and why TGTPTU remains the Pacific Northwest's still least listened to film podcast. Why so serious? THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

BATMAN: YEAR ONE Around 2000, while Darren Aronofsky and Frank Miller worked on their own film adaptation of Miller's Batman: Year One, Warner Bros. lured the Wachowskis to the project after the success of The Matrix, leading them to write their own take of Year One. In contrast to the screenplay written by Aronosfky and Miller, the Wachowskis' proposal was more faithful to the original comic and Warner was pleased with it. In the end, the Wachowskis preferred to continue their work with The Matrix trilogy, and their version of Year One was adandoned. Batman first appeared in the May 1939 edition of "Detective Comics", the creation of Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Since then, the caped crusader and his story have been re-imagined through myriad themes and variations. Arguably the most compelling of these came In 1987, when artist and writer Frank Miller portrayed the first year of Bruce Wayne's activity as Batman. His four-part story runs in parallel to that of Police Lieutenant James Gordon, whose arrival and ascension in Gotham city is of equal importance. In this episode, Josh and Scott discuss Miller's graphic novel, starting with a detailed look at the origins of the character and its artists (6:25) before presenting a full plot summary (36:20) and finally reviewing the work in its entirety (54:00).

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are working their way toward the end of the 1970s decade, two films at a time, and it turns out 1977 might be the best one yet with a lesser-known cult comedy from the likes of many Monty Pythom alums, "Jabberwocky," and recently deceased director William Firedkin's epic men on a mission thriller about transporting nitro through the jungle with "Sorceror." Available on Spotify and Apple Episode 390 includes: -Movies pushed back! Dead Bob Barker and Jimmy Buffet! Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week we catch a movie, the San Diego Comic-Con way! Going back to the early aughts and our groups very first encounters with Comic-Con, there has always been one thing that you can count on to be great in every way… the DC Animated Movie Premiere! That's right, for many of us Comic-Con goers, the very first signs that comic books were about to hit the mainstream were watching those very same books, not just superheroes, leap from page to screen. This all started with the 2007 release of Superman: Doomsday a faithful adaptation of the Death of Superman event that saw the death and resurrection of the worlds greatest and 1st superhero. It was a glorious event that was celebrated with SWAG, exhibits, a world premier and panel. Since that awesome night, SDCC has seen many fan favs like, Batman: Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, Flashpoint Paradox, and The Killing Joke. So, let's look at SDCC's DC Animated Movie Premiere Nights through the lens of SDCC22 and the release of Green Lantern: Beware My Power with some of the movie's voice talent including AldisHodge (Black Adam), “Green Lantern John Stewart”, JimmiSimpson (Westworld), “Green Arrow”, JamieGrayHyder (Law & Order: SVU), “Hawkgirl”, BrianBloom, (The A-Team), "Adam Strange". Join Grim Shea, Marke, and Jimmy the Gent as they watch a comic book come to life in maybe the best way possible, with a SDCC crowd of fans who celebrate those themes of Saturday Morning TV!

We've seen several different tellings of Batman's origin in comics, movies, and TV since Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's 1987 masterpiece four-issue “Year One” arc (Batman #404-407), but many fans still consider this the definitive version of who he is and how he came to be. This episode takes a look at why this story is so highly regarded, and what distinguishes it from the other post-Crisis revamps we've talked about so far. We also discuss the effects that Miller and Mazzuchelli's more “realistic” and “mature” approach has had (and continues to have) on perceptions of the character.

Matt Reeves's gritty take on The Batman is currently cleaning up at the box office, with critics and audiences praising the director and star Robert Pattinson's new approach to the Caped Crusader. It's worth mentioning, though, that even before the franchise was ultra-successfully rebooted by Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, there were many other proposed Batman films pitched at Warner Bros in the wake of Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. One that got close to happening was Darren Aronofsky's Batman: Year One, based on the comic by Frank Miller.Had the movie happened, Joaquin Phoenix and Christian Bale were on Aronofsky's list to play the role, and this movie came pretty close to happening. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Unmade Movie, we take a look at this project, as well as a lot of other Unmade Batman movies, including a direct sequel to Batman & Robin and even a reboot starring Clint Eastwood in the role as a grizzled, older Dark Knight.

notes on a recording:  All the way back in episode 0045, titled "Music to my Ears" I talked with Derek Richmond from the band DROPOUTS for the first time. Well, he's back and top of that DROPOUTS have a new album, Off the Leash (2022), that is now available on Spotify. What's really cool about this album is that they used a different lead guitarist for each of their songs. How cool is that! Derek also shares his inspiration behind their album cover.  In this week's bonus episode we get into a ton of stuff. Not only does Derek come by to talk about his three favorite films of the year (All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, and Banshees of Inisherin) but he shares a story about his time at Pretty Bird and DANIELS (Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert). We begin our episode talking about the director duo, hot off 11 Academy Award nominations for their film "Everything Everywhere All At Once." This leads us to Derek's top 3, and in no particular ranking. I haven't talked about Edward Burger's All Quiet on the Western Front on the show yet. I watched it recently and was deeply moved and disturbed about the content of human callousness. It is a beautifully shot, gruesome and de-moralizing World War 1 epic that reminds me of a cross between "1917" and "Saving Private Ryan." This is a German film that can be found on Netflix. Next up, we talk another film that I haven't talked much about on the show, "The Batman." A film just as dark and gritty as the aforementioned WWI film, this was one of the best adaptations of the character I have ever seen. It reminded me a lot of the golden age of Batman comics in the late 80s, early 90s. I find out in this episode, that Derek collects comic books, so I see how he comes to appreciate the Matt Reeves film from a comics perspective and with an understanding of Batman as a detective. This film really captures the feel of some of the darker stories like Jeph Loeb's "The Long Halloween" and Frank Miller's Batman Year One. This one is also on HBO MAX. His last film in the top 3, "Banshees of Inisherin," which has made most of my guests top films of the year lists. If you haven't seen this film about the end of a friendship, hop on over to HBO MAX, because this film is seriously good despite it's deceptively simple premise. Of course, we shoutout the great performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleason, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon-- these performances alone is reason enough to watch Martin McDonagh's well-written tale.  And lastly, before the show's wrap up Derek gets into some honorable mentions (and one dishonorable mention) that include: Dio: Dreamers Never Die, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Northman, Hustle, and Emily the Criminal. Definitely, take a listen to this episode to get our full thoughts on and all these films! Now: off to the next film!  Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. Carlos Menjivar -- attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. A lover of lists and film, Carlos is a firm believer that all film lists should be tackled with one goal in mind: completion. Steven Jay Schneider's "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" is the subject of this podcast. Each episode features one guest and five movies from the massive list, compiled into themed lists by the host. Guests each week will select one category without any prior knowledge as to what films are included. Once a category is chosen, Carlos reveals the five films and the viewing begins. The guests then come on Dial F for Film via Zoom and the discussion begins.

The Milksops go over the 1982 four-issue mini series Wolverine, written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Frank Miller. This was part of Wolverine's ascendence to becoming one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe. Kevin was expecting a "bigger" story, something akin to what Miller would do on Batman: Year One or Daredevil: Born Again. It's not that seismic, but there's plenty of terrific Miller art and layouts in this story. There's also ninjas, Japanese culture, an expansion of the Wolverine character and world, the arrival of the assassin/would-be-love-interest Yugio and plenty of Claremont prose. The story is good, both Milksops agree, and they are glad to have read this story -- something that has been recommended to them for over 30 years!
