We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Vancouver FC, and Canadian Premier League chat. It was a beautiful Sunday at BC Place, surely what that old Daniel Boone song was eluding to all those years ago. Vancouver Whitecaps not only kept their season alive, they did it in some style in a 3-0 win over LAFC. It was a victory that gives a lot of hope going into Friday's 'lose and you're done' game three decider in LA. We're joined by Harjeet Johal to chat about the match, the main talking points coming out of it, and look ahead to the huge match coming up on Friday. Turning our attention to the Canadian Premier League, we look at two familiar foes facing off in next weekend's championship game, plus it's our end of season Vancouver FC review, where we look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Langley side's second season in the league. There's a lot of focus on the last two there, and the last part of the show sees Michael explain all the things that he feels is wrong with VFC, with Zach offering some counter views. All of this plus Prolapse kick off their residency as our Album of the Month, there's more Britpop songs, and we have an Ipswich song as a tribute to Trevor Whymark in Wavelength. The life and times of George Albert Smith are not particularly well known. Despite working for several years as a stage hypnotist and psychic, the owner of a popular pleasure park and then eventually a pioneering inventor and filmmaker, there are few who could reel off a biography based on nothing more than a name. Perhaps even more obscure, however, was his time spent as a ghost hunter for the Society for Psychical Research, which, whilst a relatively short career in comparison, was no less groundbreaking, when he took tenancy of a haunted house for more than a whole year in order to investigate the reported phenomena. Ryan Gauld finally gets his chance to impress the manager in training with Max Johnston also included to contend at right-back. Steve Clarke wasn't happy with a line of questioning about the summer's failure, which is discussed as well, on top of the latest moves made by Scottish players in the transfer window. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Canadian national team, Copa America, and Euro 2024 chat, and we're joined once again this week by Felipe Vallejo to talk about it all. It was a two-game home stand for the Whitecaps this week and to quote Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, you win some and you lose some, and I've lost the will to lose. That about sums up how I feel about the 'Caps home form, where they've now dropped 16 points so far this season. We look at the main talking points coming out of the win over Kansas City and the loss in the seven-goal thriller to Houston, including the concerning knee injury to their talismanic captain Ryan Gauld. The MLS transfer window is open. The Whitecaps rumours haven't been plentiful but the club will definitely be making some additions, but may also be losing some players. We look at the apparent imminent arrival of Colombian defender Edier Ocampo and the possible departures of Fafa Picault and Javain Brown, plus we look at the new MLS roster rules and how they may impact the Whitecaps in this transfer window and beyond. And there's still time to talk Canadian Premier League, League1 BC, and the Canadian national teams. Plus Cork band The Frank and Walters continue as Album of the Month, we take you back to 1974, and we've an England Euros 2024 song in Wavelength now that they didn't win it and aren't quite as insufferable! Lack of access to specialist healthcare is having a significant effect on patients and health professionals. An Otago University report has found that between 2018 and 2022 the risk of being declined following a GP referral increased by 5.2% per year. Co-author Professor Robin Gauld told Mike Hosking that it's more than 17,000 extra people being denied over that time. He says there are longstanding issues with workforce, availability of staff such as theatre technicians, and funding. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Private healthcare is experiencing a surge in demand as public wait-lists keep expanding. A new private hospital has opened in central Auckland, and Epsom's Mercy Hospital is expected to add dozens more beds and at least 10 new operating theatres. At least 1 third of Kiwis now have private health insurance, with Southern Cross reporting a 3.5 percent increase in memberships over the past year. Otago University's Robin Gauld says more people are worried about accessing healthcare as stories surface. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver FC, Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, and Canadian football chat. And not only that, it's our sexcentenary episode! The Whitecaps played their first competitive match of the year midweek, putting in a battling performance and almost getting a win over Mexican giants Tigres in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. We look back at the main talking points coming out of the game, what it might mean for the 'Caps MLS season to come, and hear from Ryan Gauld, Damir Kreilach and Brian White. We've two featured interviews for you this episode and first up is Whitecaps head coach Vanni Sartini. Fresh off his 100th game in charge of the club, we chat with Vanni about the state of the team three weeks out from the MLS season, how the new additions have fitted in, the existing guys taking the next step, what the team might look like this year, what he's allowed to do in his upcoming suspension, how his therapy is going, and a lot more in a 40-minute interview. Next up is Vancouver FC midfielder Gabriel Bitar. We chat with Gabi about his first season at VFC, his hopes for his second one, his career journey to this point, and his Asian Cup experience with Lebanon. All of this, plus we look at another week in Canadian soccer that just leaves you shaking your head and wondering where the game is going in the country, as the much respected Dino Rossi departs from the CSA board with a scathing attack and the U17 women fail to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. Plus we look back at this week for the Whitecaps in 1974, and there's a fine splattering of music to boot including our Album of the Month from Marion. This episode of the podcast is brought to you by Recovery Family Law, family law lawyers in Surrey, working with clients to get excellent results. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver FC, Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, and general football chat. It's been a crazy week with so much to cover! We start off with the Whitecaps News of the Week as Ryan Gauld signs a three-year contract extension with the club. We chat about the deal and hear some thoughts on it from Ryan himself and Whitecaps' CEO Axel Schuster. We also look at some transfer rumours swirling around players maybe coming and maybe leaving the 'Caps, look at their latest preseason match, and chat about the leaked 50th anniversary kit. We've two feature interviews with you this episode, both with a Vancouver FC flavour. First up is latest addition, versatile defender Paris Gee. We chat about Paris' career so far, his return to the lower mainland to play, his very personal reasons for needing a return home, and his hopes for the season to come. We also chat with VFC young starlet T.J. Tahid about his first year as a pro, playing at a World Cup with Canada, and his recent training stint over in Holland. And in news that shocked the soccer landscape in Canada, Canadian Soccer Business and Mediapro are heading to court as both sides want out of their 10-year agreement. What does this mean for the Canadian Premier League? What does it mean for broadcasting the game here in Canada? What do the legal filings mean? How long could this drag on for? There are so many questions in a fast moving story and we wanted to try and do it justice, so we have a lengthy chat about it all and are joined by local lawyer and local referee Darnell Smith to try and make sense of it all. All of this, plus Hot Chocolate Boy, a look back at this week for the Whitecaps in 1974, and there's a fine splattering of music to boot. Decision Day! One of the most fun days on the MLS calendar is here, and LAFC can finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th depending on their result. As Filly and Scarf have their eye on games featuring Houston, Seattle, and of course Carson, Denis Bouanga has his sights set on LAFC's third Golden Boot in 5 years. LAFC started out strong, peppering Takaoka with a few shots and creating solid chances. However, after Ryan Hollingshead goes to ground early on Richie Laryea, Vancouver earns a PK. Ryan Gauld came into the match 6-for-6. He left the first half 6-for-7, as Maxime Crepeau makes a massive save to keep it scoreless. In the 34', it was inevitable. Denis Bouanga, from distance, off a great steal and pass from Ilie, makes it 20 on the year and all but wraps up the Golden Boot. LAFC leads 1-0. It would remain 1-0 until the 58', as Ali Ahmed takes a pass from thorn-in-our-side Richie Laryea and ties it. Despite a second PK for Gauld (this one hit the crossbar) and a point-blank chance for Mario Gonzalez, this one would end scoreless. LAFC now heads to the First Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, where they will play a best-of-three series against... these very same Vancouver Whitecaps. Also on 282, the boys welcome LAFC's newest owner, Shaun Neff, Filly makes up words and sings to new songs, and Scarf gets to have a mini 110 reunion with Vince La Rosa. Get ready for a LOT of Vancouver talk over the next few weeks, and enjoy Episode 282!

Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps in an express version of the show. To begin, they look at the Whitecaps latest game, a Cascadia Cup clash with the Portland Timbers, where they picked up a massive road 3-2 road win. Led by big two goal and one assist effort from Ryan Gauld, and supported by some key pieces around him, they look at what went right for Vancouver in this one, as they kicked off their seven-game road trip on a high note. Then, they take a look at what they can also learn from this game, especially defensively, where they continue to struggle on the road. Because of that, Alex and Sam explore some alternate solutions, including a potential personnel tweak that could be worth exploring. Lastly, they take a look ahead to the Whitecaps next game, a midweek clash away to the Chicago Fire, looking at what to expect from that one. A middling side, this Fire team will be no pushover, but represents a very winnable challenge for this Vancouver team as they continue to try and push up the table. Make sure to check out The Third Sub Podcast on Twitter, @thirdsubpod, as well as on Instagram, @the3rdsub_.

Ahead of our conversation at Greenlight Books in Brooklyn, Tom Gauld and I sat down to discuss his career. The cartoonist was on tour in the States to promote his latest Drawn & Quarterly collection, Revenge of the Librarians. The book is classic Gauld, gag strips with historic and literary edges. These days, he's probably best know for the latter, with a weekly strip appearing in The Guardian. As the book's title implies, the artist has earned a loyal following among librarians for comics that mine the absurdity of canonical classics. He's also earned a fanbase in an even more unlikely place, with strips for New Scientist that take on the day's scientific headlines. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
An unclear picture is being painted of the level of need in our health system. An editorial in the latest Medical Journal raises questions about why we're not appropriately measuring Unmet Secondary Elective Healthcare Need, otherwise known as non-urgent hospital treatment. Otago Business School Dean, Professor Robin Gauld told Mike Hosking they've done some work towards what officials would find if they did measure it. He says based on a small study they did of GPs, probably at least ten percent of the population would have some kind of unmet need. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A new artificial intelligence programme that produces essays on demand is sparking concerns at Otago University. Chatbot software ChatGPT can churn out writing requests —including university assessments— using information available on the internet, including academic texts. Any type of plagiarism, including the use of chatbots, is forbidden under university policy. Otago Business School Dean Robin Gauld told Tim Dower that there's a real risk students will use it and submit it as their own work. He says the technology could already be too smart for plagiarism-detecting software. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's the World Vets extravaganza wrap-up with The Newf, Gauldy, Keefer and Mr.Side... sometimes Dark, sometimes Quit but this weekend he was "Rattledside". It's a light hearted but melancholy show at times due to the passing of JGR's Coy Gibbs. We pay respects with the fun stories and times had with Coy during his time in the sport and spotlight what a truly great guy he was; and how he continues to leave a mark on us today. It's a great show and if there was nothing else in the world to listen to, Coy would have loved it too.
Jeff Paterson was back in his regular slot. JPat started off by talking about stopping by the Olympic Museum in Switzerland and talked about a few of the notable items he saw there. After a few more interesting Swiss facts, Jeff answered our Bodog Poll Question. Jeff gave his thoughts on why the World Cup of Hockey would be in February and have the league paused, as opposed to before the start of the season. The guys talked more about the salary cap and when it is going to get that big bump, so desperately needed. Vancouver Whitecaps FC Head Coach, Vanni Sartini, joined Matt and Blake after a big draw last weekend. Vanni talked about him personally authorizing a playoff format change in the MLS playoff race that would see a spot automatically go to Vancouver and there is only 6 spots now up for grabs. Walking it back a little bit, it is more of a challenge to the players. Vanni gave his thoughts on the charge in Gauld's game right now. Big players make big change and that is why they make the big bucks. Vanni talked about specific MLS rules that differ from the rest of world, in the form of transfer windows. Vanni gave a very blunt assessment as to why there are no more Italians on the team.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a story of 3 friends who bonded over their love of ultramarathons, who after too many drinks decided to place a bet..the bet being that they would spin a globe and wherever it would land, they would run. They span it and it landed on Tajikistan, so it was set they would run across this small desolate little country in central Asia, and they did! They ran from the border of Afghanistan to China across Tajikistan, it was 400km and they did it in 7 days. It had never been run before and they were not sure it was even possible. What makes it so interesting is that it is a story not about 'finishers' or 'medals' as it was not an event, but just about an adventure, self-determination and strength. We have on today, one of the group members and the only female in the group and the ONLY finisher, Jodie Gauld. Jodie, is British and is no stranger to ultrarunning, she has done many ultra marathons and multistage races, ending up with some incredible results. In fact, her first ever running event was a 50 miler, which says a lot about her character and strength. An incredible award winning movie was made about this venture, called Running the Roof, by Sourcy films. It is a MUST watch and tells the story behind this adventure and what happened. If you want to watch the video you can find the links to google play, amazon or apple TV here : https://www.runningtheroof.com/We also discuss about Jodie's motivation, training and logistics behind ultramarathons or multistage events, how she found running as the only female and in rugged Central Asia. Enjoy :)

Charean Williams joined Matt and Blake, as usual on a Monday to wrap up week 9 after a lot of upsets. Started off by talking about the Cowboys loss. Charean says it is just a one-off as opposed to saying something about the team. Says that Dak didn’t play well and his injured calf has nothing to do with it. Perhaps it could have been rust. The Defence is a concern. Talked about the Bills loss. Says this one is just a one-off as well. To score 6 points against Jax is a head-scratcher. Concerned that Bills would lay an egg abasing a team like that. Said that LAR losing to TEN is also a one-off as TEN is better than what people give them credit for. Stafford looked like the Stafford he was in DET. Talked about NEP and how to win with Mac Jones. If you can run the ball and play defence, you will win a lot of games. Tampa needs to run the ball better. Talked about the job Kyle Shanahan has done with the 9ers. This is an average to below-average team since Lynch and him have come in. At sometime they will have to make a decision if they are going to have to move on. Depending on how the season goes, they may need to go get a veteran QB. Talked about Rodgers and his availability this week and what the rest of the league thinks about his situation. Says they let him do whatever he wants. Packers will come out with 2 game plans depending on if AR is back in the lineup. Thinks it could have improved his MVP chances. John Shannon joined the show in his regular spot. Talked about why he stays up late to watch west coast games. Thank goodness the PP started going, he said. Says JT Miller is the battery that makes this thing happen. Demko is doing his job and the forwards are getting into the right gear. More positives than negatives at this time. We can’t measure the emotional aspect that they go through. When they get snake bit, it’s not a good thing. Nobody expected Flames to do what they are doing. They have been a real surprise. When you go on an eastern road swing for 5 games and come back with 10 points, you are doing something right. They’ve done some good things there, a lot of it has to do with Markstrom. Sutter creates accountability. Talked about the Eichel trade. Not sure that BUF could have gotten more. They did what they had to do and that was to get rid of 10 millions dollars and got some prospects. Adams was handcuffed in this deal. Peggula’s made it clear they had to move him to a team in the West and couldn’t take money back. Talked about the FLA coaching situation and if they let Brunette finish the season. Thinks that Colliton lost the room in CHI before the scandal happened. John thinks that he kept his job longer because Bowman stepped away. They played so poorly on Friday night that they had to do something. The CEO of the Vancouver Whitecaps, Axel Shuster joined Matt and Blake fresh on the news of the announcement of when their playoff game will be against Sporting KC. Started talking about the team not getting down on itself after giving one up. Says the game was a little more difficult but it was no problem. They want to be world class in handling suffering. The team reacted the right way and played a great 2nd half. To find out at the end that there was no security blanket. It was the perfect ending for them to do it all on their own. Talked about what it meant to have 25K fans in the stands. It was incredible. Never had anything like that after the last 2 years. They got it exactly when they needed it. The fans backed them up. They would not have gotten the point without the fans. Talked about Brian White coming in mid season and if he had any indication that he could have done what he did. Says they always try to stay conservative in their expectations of incoming players. It was something that you couldn’t predict with Brian. Says the staff played a big part in settling him. The coaching staff found the best way to use these players coming in. Almost the perfect package they go in-season. Talked about Florian Jungwirth and what they expected from him. Wanted leadership from him, starting 32 Bundesliga games. You need an emotional leader who pushes guys on the pitch. He also over performed. Signed him as an addition, turned out to be a guy who started most of the games since he game. He fit into the culture, along with White and Gauld. Talked about what is holding up the hiring of Sartini as a permanent head coach. Says that they need to be comfortable to sit down and speak about it. Every time they talk, it’s about the game in front of them. It won’t help them to win a game to sit and talk about the head coach. It doesn’t come only with a signature but with a strategy and the next steps to do. Talked about officiating and the noise SKC made against the officials. He trusts that every referee is doing their best and doesn’t want to make mistakes. Was happy there was no camera on him when the PK was called within the first 5 minutes. He can say that if he was the ref it would be way worse. Talked about when we may see Vite. He has to earn his spot but he has very special skills. He can think quicker than anyone else on the pitch. He is a real player, his coaches tell him. Talked about the suspended executives and who is picking up the added responsibilities. They have already hired a new new executives as he builds the club off the pitch. Talked about the teams interactions with the investigator. Will wait until the investigations has concluded and the recommendations that come before he makes decisions.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
JJ Adams, Whitecaps FC Reporter for Post Media joined Matt and Blake after the team drew 1-1 at LAFC. Talked about the result. Since they currently sit in a playoff spot, everyone else they are in contention with could lose and they would make it. The last home game they played was vs SJ and they had Jungwirth as their CB. JJ says that the Caps scoring so early could have thrown them off. It was all LAFC after that. Reminded him of the last time they played each other back in August. They wouldn’t have come away with any points in either of the games if it weren’t for Crepeau. Brian White is unreal, says JJ. Talked about how the season turned around so dramatically. You can’t understate the impact of Ryan Gauld. He drives the play in the final third. They had the bones of a good team before him and it’s all coming together. What they’ve done under Vanni is far more entertaining. You can see the identity that they wanted before. They aren’t being hemmed into their own box under siege. They’ve turned the corner and full credit to Vanni and Gauld. Talked about Seattle. They are very daunting at full strength. It should be a really outstanding game between two teams who have a lot to play for. Talked about the team’s troubles off the pitch. October 19th is the first time Shuster was made aware of the allegations against Busby. Says you would have thought that the team would have made him aware of that. They did not… That would really upset him. **We are coming to a time of reckoning and change.** The league is not too impressed with this team. Talks about the other similar allegations that the club has clearly not learned from. Darren Dreger of the Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake and started off by chatting about the Eichel trade speculation. Dregs says to be careful about what you hear. The reaction he has received following up on it isn’t very positive. Sooner than later the Sabres need to find a deal. Talked about outside pressure. Knows that Daly has been actively involved in this but doesn’t think he is applying any pressure. Says that the NHLPA is thinking of filing a grievance. Nobody wants to go down that path. Wonders what the teams involved are thinking while the decision lingers after fair offers have been made. Thinks that it’s a collective pressure to get a deal done. Talked about Kevin Weekes report. Says it’s hard to comment on it. You don’t want to establish that that is the deal. Talked about his thoughts on the Bettman presser. Felt like it was cold. Very legally. You saw two decorated lawyers on full display. Was disappointing to see the way they skirted Westhead. Can appreciate the legal talk but it felt like there was a coldness about that that we didn’t get from WPG brass. Talked about Chipman and his sincerity. Talked about the PIT scandal. Says that this isn’t new for the NHL. Talked about the future of Gary and if he could be out of a job. Believes that he still has the vast majority of support from his owners. There is no question that they have questions about what has been going on. They just want to make sure they can ask the questions they can ask. Doesn’t think he is in a pile of heat here. Ownership sources are asking why the fine for the Blackhawks was so light.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC Striker, Brian White joined Matt and Blake. Started off by chatting about what it was like to be on the pitch and how big a comeback it was. Says it was important to get over the playoff bar. Talked about leaving RBNY, the club and state he calls home. Says the writing was on the wall and it was time for him to leave. The grass has been greener on the other side, for sure. Fell in love with the city as soon as he got here. Hopes to stay with the club because it is working out so well. Says that he has his sights on some club records. It’s been a lot of fun while they are winning. Guys are enjoying this time and the playoff push as well as enjoying each others company. Talked about the interaction with the fans and singing Stand By Me at the end. Fans have been great and really looking forward to the last 2 games. Talked about Nerwinski and being a great friend, before they were teammates. Scott Rintoul, veteran Vancouver broadcaster joined Matt and Blake for the first time in nearly 4 years. And the first time he has hit the airwaves since his departure from Rogers, a month ago. Started off by a talking to the audience for some thoughts as you no longer get a chance to have a last show these days. Talked about what it was like to serve two markets, in Vancouver and Calgary. Somehow he managed to watch all the games. Talked about working with Karen Surman. It was overdue for her to get a shot. Talked about the Canucks and how they’re doing. Followed that up with thoughts on full capacity. Talked about the Whitecaps and if they are for real. Makes a great point about nobody wanting to deal with Gauld and White right now. Talked about Lions. There is a lot of work, not just on the football field, to get people back to the games. New ownership needs to learn on how to understand the common man. Jeff Paterson, Canucks Reporter in his regular spot. Started talking about Podkolzin and why he will be healthy scratched. JPat is ok with him sitting a game out here. Not like he has burned the lights out his first four games. This will be an eye-opener for him as he takes this game in the press box. Talked about EP40 and the club needing him now. Talked about the starting goalies. The game will be delayed because Patrick Kane is being celebrated for his 1000 games., despite it being after the fact. Talked about Adam Gaudette and him being healthy scratch. Who knows where his NHL career goes from here. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
