How do artists hold the powerful to account? Graphic novelist Alison Bechdel and editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes have been grappling with that question for decades, in their own very different ways. Bechdel is the creator of the seminal comic strip, “Dykes to Watch out For,” which she self-syndicated for 25 years. She's also the author and illustrator of four graphic novels, including “Fun Home,” which was adapted into a five-time Tony-winning Broadway musical. She is a professor at Yale, and her latest book is Spent. Telnaes is a two-time Pulitzer winner and the winner of the Herb Block Prize for editorial cartooning in 2023. Earlier this year, she made international headlines after resigning from The Washington Post when her cartoon mocking tech billionaires for bending the knee to President Trump, including Post owner Jezz Bezos, was spiked. She now publishes her work on Substack Kara, Alison and Ann discuss everything from politics and money in art, to South Park, book bans, drawing Kristi Noem's flowing extensions, art making, and AI drawings. In this episode of The Roller Coaster Podcast, I sit down once again with my friend James Dykes, one of the few guests we've ever invited back. The first time James shared his story, it reached tens of millions of people across social media. But behind the viral numbers was a man who walked through unthinkable loss, the death of his wife, deep grief, and personal trauma, and still chose to show up with vulnerability and faith. This time, we go even deeper. James opens up about the emotional aftermath of sharing his story with the world, the love, the hate, the healing, and the spiritual wrestle that followed. We talk about fatherhood, men's mental health, navigating grief publicly, and how suffering has shaped his faith and purpose. He shares how his pain has now become a catalyst for writing, for building community, and for stepping into a life of coaching, consulting, and hope.If you're carrying something heavy, this episode is a reminder: you're not alone.James's honesty will challenge you, comfort you, and move you to believe that beauty still rises from the ashes.Key Moments:0:00 The Viral Reel That Changed Everything3:12 Why We Had to Do This Again8:53 Surrendering the Outcome12:33 The Pain Behind the Hate17:26 Finding a Brotherhood in Grief23:42 The Power of Not Being Alone28:26 Holding Space for Both Joy and Sorrow33:13 James's Lifelong Journey Through Suffering36:50 Returning to the Garden42:53 A Vision for Leadership and Wholeness46:04 Reading the Testimony54:28 A Message to the LonelyGuest Info:IG: @jamesdykes1987 (https://www.instagram.com/jamesdykes1987/)-Where to find Tyler Hall: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tylerchall/ Newsletter: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/the-tyler-hall-archives-7018241874482122753/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sirTHALL Work with Tyler: https://www.tylerchristianhall.com/

A beloved Pride tradition around the world is the roar of Dykes on Bikes: a fierce motorcade of motorcycle mamas who kick off the parade with a chrome-plated spectacle of queer power, and noise. They first rolled onto the scene at San Francisco Pride in the mid-'70s and quickly became a staple all over the world. Inspired by those heavy-metal heroines, Chicago's own Bikes and Mics emerged—a no-rules posse of queer performers, riders, and creatives. This year, the group celebrates their 10th anniversary with a high-octane Mad Max–themed ride, complete with leather, dust, and rumors of a Tina Turner impersonator showing up as Aunty Entity.Today, comedian and motorcycle mama Tamale Sepp joins us to dive into the wild, fabulous history of Bikes and Mics and Dykes on Bikes—two-wheeled revolutions led by fierce queer women who love a little heavy metal rumbling between their thighs.BIKES AND MICS: https://www.bikesandmics.comFOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:★ instagram.com/tamalerocks★ instagram.com/faustofernos★ instagram.com/marcfelionPlus-• JoJo Siwa cancels upcoming Chicago Pride performance amid controversy over dating a man. • Comedian Margaret Cho says Ellen DeGeneres was “not nice” and acted like a “mean girl.”• Sidetrack, one of the world's largest gay bars, plans to open the first-ever airport gay bar at Chicago's O'Hare Terminal 1.• Openly queer musician Daniel Hamrick hijacks a ‘Straight Pride' event with a trans power ballad.
They are aesthetic pioneers, norm-benders, and often the only woman in their field. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn’t help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we’ll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Those who've followed Alison Bechdel's career from cartoonist to cultural icon over the years (the term ‘Bechdel Test' is named for her) knows the creator of the popular ‘Dykes to Watch Out For' comic strip and several graphic novels knows how to tell a joke about even the most uncomfortable topics. With Spent the focus is on satire, blending reality within a progressive ideological wonderland so exaggerated it feels like a checklist of every liberal trope imaginable, and possibly some new ones created just for this book.
Come along on this deep dive into Alison Bechdel's new autofictional comic novel Spent, that will give you everything from Edward Gorey Easter eggs to Harriet the Spy content. Alison teaches me things about myself (I'm a bottom-up thinker. Who knew!) and reflects on what Alison, the character, learns from finally meeting the much beloved Dykes to Watch Out For on the page. Whether you are a fan of goats, wood chopping, reality TV or Virginia Woolf – this episode has something for every kind of anti-capitalist dyke. This week, In the Key of Q welcomes Rita de Los Angeles, a country singer-songwriter whose journey has taken her from the streets of Los Angeles to rural Germany. With her unique blend of country, Americana, and indie folk rock, Rita has carved out a distinctive space for herself as a proudly queer artist in the international country music scene.Born to Arab immigrant parents who filled their home with country music, Rita's relationship with the genre has evolved through remarkable life experiences. At fifty-five, she's built a life in Germany with her wife of sixteen years, performs to sell-out shows, and has just released her Pride anthem, "Not Even a Little," dedicated to Dykes on Bikes. In this candid conversation, Rita shares stories of her early activism with Queer Nation and ACT UP, her forced migration due to unequal marriage laws, and how singing unexpectedly became her medicine during a period of debilitating panic attacks.Timestamps[00:00:00] - Introduction[00:02:00] - Rita's stage name and life in Los Angeles[00:04:11] - Being a native Los Angeleno and immigrant families[00:05:51] - Egyptian parents' migration to the US[00:08:24] - Discussion on attitudes toward international conflict[00:10:24] - Early activism with Queer Nation and ACT UP[00:13:10] - LGBTQ+ environment in 1980s-90s Los Angeles[00:15:29] - Shutting down anti-gay church services[00:19:02] - Who are the Dykes on Bikes?[00:20:40] - Country music influences and family connections[00:25:48] - Ageism in the gay community[00:28:12] - Creating inclusive spaces through music[00:30:48] - The transformative experience of seeing diverse couples slow dancing[00:35:04] - The story behind "Home Is Where the Heart Is"[00:40:03] - Separation from family during COVID[00:42:32] - Discovering singing as therapy for panic attacks[00:46:48] - The fifteen-year-old self segment[00:51:13] - Two minutes on living your dreams[00:54:24] - Gateway track: "Not Even a Little"Featured Songs"Slow Dancing" - A ballad inspired by seeing diverse couples slow dancing at one of Rita's performances in a rural German bar"Home Is Where the Heart Is" - A poignant reflection on being forced to leave the US due to unequal marriage laws"Not Even a Little" - Rita's Pride anthem dedicated to Dykes on Bikes, described as "country disco" with hip-hop rhythmsAbout Rita de Los AngelesRita de Los Angeles is a country singer-songwriter now based in rural Germany, just outside Cologne. After meeting her German wife 23 years ago, Rita was forced to leave the US due to immigration laws that didn't recognize same-sex relationships. At age 55, Rita has reinvented herself as a musician, discovering that singing helped cure her debilitating panic attacks. Alison Bechdel‘s cult following for her early comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For grew wildly in response to her graphic memoirs, the best-selling Fun Home, adapted into a Tony Award-winning musical, Are You My Mother?, and The Secret to Superhuman Strength. To many, her name is synonymous with the Bechdel Test, a metric to evaluate a film's representation of women. Her new book, Spent: A Comic Novel, hilariously skewers the absurdities of modern life while delivering a rollicking case for embracing life's messy truths before it's too late. In Spent, a fictional version of Bechdel lives on a goat sanctuary in Vermont, where she is visited by the older versions of the central characters of Dykes to Watch Out For among others. On May 27, 2025, Alison Bechdel came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to read from her work, show slides, and answer questions from her fans. She was introduced by artist Wendy MacNaughton.

Perhaps you've been following Alison Bechdel's work since her comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” which invented the now ubiquitous Bechdel test (does a movie have two women who speak to each other about something other than a man?). Maybe you came to know her through her graphic memoir “Fun Home,” which was adapted into a Tony-award winning musical. Her latest comic novel, “Spent,” is a work of autofiction that grapples with and parodies Bechdel's own popularity. We'll talk with Bechdel about being famous in a world on fire— and the funny side of it, too. Guests: Alison Bechdel, graphic novelist and cartoonist, author of "Spent: A Comic Novel." Alison Bechdel is a cartoonist and graphic novelist. She first started getting attention for her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For and later wrote a graphic memoir called Fun Home which is about her father's troubled life and her own experience of coming out as a lesbian. In 2015, Fun Home was produced as a Broadway musical and won 5 Tony Awards. Her new graphic novel Spent is about an artist trying to come to terms with her past success. And here's a spoiler. She includes this in her story but Alison Bechdel doesn't really run a sanctuary farm for pygmy goats. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.

We talk a lot about — and when I say 'we,' I mean the wider queer community — how upsetting it is that queer bars and clubs are closing at an accelerated rate. But I think the bigger tragedy is the disappearance of queer cafés.And maybe it's wrong to pit them against each other, but queer cafés offer that beautiful intermediate step. They're not as full-on or intimidating as a bar or a club, and they're places where you can just be. There's no pressure to perform, no need to match the thump of a bassline — just you, your overpriced oat flat white, and the comforting hum of conversations that sound a little more like home. One of the absolute best queer cafés that ever existed — and I won't hear any counterarguments — was First Out Café in Central London. Before it closed in 2011 to make way for yet another railway construction project, it was a sanctuary. A place where you could nervously nurse a tea while pretending to read the free gay magazines that used to exist, all the while sneaking glances at the other queers who had found refuge there too. It's also where today's guest, drag king extraordinaire Mr Wesley Dykes, took his first tentative steps into queerdom. Growing up between Lagos and South London, Wesley navigated the complexities of identity, family expectations, and self-acceptance. And when that weight felt a little too heavy, First Out Café was there — offering a cup of tea and the reassuring presence of a community.Other episodes about First Out Cafe'The First Gay Place That I Went Inside...' - with Alex Iantaffi from Gender Stories PodcastFirst Out Cafe, London (with Ali Brumfitt)Follow meInstagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespodFacebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespodSign up to the Queer Word newsletter: https://queer-word.beehiiv.com/subscribeSupport meBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespodFollow my guestInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrwesleydykes/

In today's episode I'm speaking with Jacob Dykes, the Conservation Manager of The European Nature Trust - a foundation that works to lift conservation and nature restoration projects in Europe, supporting a network of organisations working at landscape-scale to protect and restore ecosystems. Through an approach they call ‘Noise for Nature', they also amplify conservation storytelling by creating impactful documentary films that raise awareness and engagement with the defining issues of our time.I was really looking forward to speaking with Jacob about his conservation work in general but also more specifically about wolves. The European Nature Trust recently produced a film called The Wolf Within exploring the relationship between wolves and humans in Europe, which was released at the end of last year – just weeks before the European Commission decided to downgrade their protection status. I've been fascinated with wolves for as long as I can remember and really enjoyed learning more about the evolution of our relationship with them and their place in our collective imagination. Jacob and I also talked about what this relationship says about our coexistence with the wild; and what we can do to better and more equitably safeguard keystone species around us. Jacob also shared a really lovely story about seeing wolves in the wild in Italy, and an important reminder to keep practicing wonder towards the natural world.Want to dive deeper?Watch The Wolf Within: https://www.waterbear.com/campaigns/the-wolf-withinDiscover The European Nature Trust: https://theeuropeannaturetrust.com/The EU recently downgraded wolf protections in Europe: https://eeb.org/nature-under-attack-bern-convention-weakens-wolf-protection/Joint statement by 300+ civil society organisations calling for strict wolf protection to be maintained: https://eeb.org/library/joint-statement-by-300-civil-society-organisations-calling-for-strict-wolf-protection-to-be-maintained/ClientEarth's investigation: https://www.clientearth.org/latest/press-office/press-releases/ombudsman-opens-inquiry-after-eu-trashes-wolf-protections/The European Nature Trust on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theeuropeannaturetrustIo Non Ho Paura Del Lupo on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iononhopauradellupoCome say hi!Why We Care on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. In June 1986, Kevin Dykes witnessed the attempted murder of 2 people and the actual murder of a 3rd person in his neighborhood in Compton, CA. Kevin decided to go to the police, partly out of fear of reprisals by the killers who knew he witnessed the murder. The prosecutors then used his knowledge of the crimes that he witnessed against him and charged him with all 3 crimes.Learn more and get involved at: https://www.change.org/free-kevin-dykes https://www.wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com/with-jason-flom https://cash.app/$kevindykes0712 Wrongful Conviction is a production of Lava for Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co No1.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
