Ahead of our conversation at Greenlight Books in Brooklyn, Tom Gauld and I sat down to discuss his career. The cartoonist was on tour in the States to promote his latest Drawn & Quarterly collection, Revenge of the Librarians. The book is classic Gauld, gag strips with historic and literary edges. These days, he's probably best know for the latter, with a weekly strip appearing in The Guardian. As the book's title implies, the artist has earned a loyal following among librarians for comics that mine the absurdity of canonical classics. He's also earned a fanbase in an even more unlikely place, with strips for New Scientist that take on the day's scientific headlines. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Cartoonist and illustrator Tom Gauld rejoins the show to celebrate the publication of his new book, Revenge of the Librarians (Drawn & Quarterly), a collection of his weekly literary humor comics for The Guardian. We get into his comics' three lives — in the paper, online, and in books — and the difference between seeing his work in print vs. onscreen, the decision to include lockdown-era strips in his new book, and how he manages to keep his comics fresh despite having two weekly deadlines (he also draws a comic for New Scientist). We also talk about his stylistic & structural experiments, how he grew more comfortable using color, the longform comics he'd love to make (if he could just find them halfway done before he got to work), and why Beckett & Austen are always great authors to fall back on for a gag. And we discuss what it's like going on a book tour again (and meeting at least one librarian at every event), being more fearless about his work when he was younger and having higher standards now, why it was important to him to make a children's book before his kids went to college, and more!

@insidebeautypodcastNotas del podcast: -Tom Gauld: https://bit.ly/3sIaypi-Christoph Niemann: https://bit.ly/3bYoswB-Lalalimola: https://bit.ly/2NOD2iv-Flavita Banana: https://bit.ly/3rcsFU5-Saul Steinberg: https://bit.ly/3uQnOdu-Juanjo Sáez: https://bit.ly/3b9HfG4-Museo Solomon R. Episode 023 / Contemporary and historical romance novelist and co-host of the SPA girls podcast, Wendy Vella joins Jami and Sara to talk about the mindset shift she had to make as she moved from traditionally published to self publishing as well as how she’s learned to trust her instincts in both writing and promoting her books. They wrap up the podcast with a discussion of how Wendy is maximizing her intellectual property for longevity. In the intro, Sara shares news about Alli’s (Alliance of Independent Authors) new initiative to help indie authors with rights licensing, including “one-off contract representation” and full rights representation. Sara also shared some fun writerly humor from cartoonist Tom Gauld. Jami has been re-watching the Hunger Games, getting ready for her book release, and planning her next book. Then they discuss how the pandemic is impacting them as well as other creatives, which sounds pretty highbrow for a chat about stress dreams, memes, and country music. You can find show notes and links at wishidknownforwriters.com. In this podcast episode, you’ll discover: The benefits of entering writing contests How Wendy transitioned from traditional publishing to indie publishing and the mindset shift change she had to go through What Wendy wishes she’d known about editing and marketing How Wendy pinpointed what she needed to change about her contemporary covers and the details on how she rebranded her series from the covers to the blurbs The struggle to do everything ourselves and how Wendy gave some tasks away to her assistant so she could focus on what she was really good at How Wendy went against all the advice about mixing genres and it turned out to be her biggest success Learning to trust your instincts and finding the right people to listen to for advice How Wendy toggles back and forth between writing historical to contemporary romance The challenges of writing from a more remote location Why the SPA Girls began podcasting and why podcasts are a great way to up-skill How Wendy is maximizing her intellectual property for longevity by putting the product she has into new formats Genres discussed include historical romance and contemporary romance. In his inimitable style, British cartoonist Tom Gauld has opened comics to a crossover audience and challenged perceptions of what the medium can be. Noted as a "book-lover's cartoonist," Gauld's weekly strips in The Guardian, Britain's most well-regarded newspaper, stitch together the worlds of literary criticism and pop culture to create brilliantly executed, concise comics. Simultaneously silly and serious, Gauld adds an undeniable lightness to traditionally highbrow themes. From sarcastic panels about the health hazards of being a best-selling writer to a list of magical items for fantasy writers (such as the Amulet of Attraction, which summons mainstream acceptance, Hollywood money, and fresh coffee), Gauld's cartoons are timely and droll--his trademark British humour, impeccable timing, and distinctive visual style sets him apart from the rest. In Baking with Kafka, he proves this with one witty, sly, ridiculous comic after another. Gauld is in conversation with Mark Frauenfelder, a research director at the Institute for the Future, founding editor of Wired.com, and the author of eight books.

Tom Gauld -- a cartoonist, illustrator of comics and covers for the New Yorker and The Believer. His weekly cartoon about the arts for The Guardian newspaper is a wry, often deadpan favorite among writers. He is extremely prolific, author of more than a dozen books of comics, including You're Just Jealous of My Jetpack and most recently Mooncop. The lunar cop is perfectly Gauldian character - doesn't say much, spends a lot of time walking the barren landscape, is pretty lonesome and quaint. Virginia met with Tom before his talk at Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just an hour's drive from our studio. The challenge was finding a quiet spot to record in Harvard square...at rush hour. Music: "Feeding Pigeons" - Poddington Bear Ad Music: "Joy in the Restaurant" - David Szesztay
Cartoonist & illustrator Tom Gauld joins the show to talk about his new book, Mooncop (Drawn & Quarterly), and the post-optimistic view of the future. We get into his drawing and storytelling influences, how he got a weekly gig doing literary gags at The Guardian, why he likes doing illustration work, the time he melted down when he met his comics-idols, how he got his first New Yorker cover, the two key elements of productivity for all artists and writers (coffee & walking) and more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal
In this episode of Watch.Read.Listen., we discuss the issues with Fanboys, arguing for more inclusiveness in the various fan cultures. We break down four main problems that we've observed both in others and ourselves: 1) fan tribalism, 2) gatekeepers, 3) "cheer pressure" (coined by Brady from Hello Internet and Numberphile), and 4) lack of critical thought around their fandom. On the more serious side, we discussed briefly the death of comic creator Darwyn Cooke. His loved ones encourage donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Hero Initiative, which is dedicated to helping comic creators in need. This Week: Duane - Stuff You Missed in History Class (two-parter on Hercules Mulligan in particular); Marathon Man (1976) and the Canon episode on it; Free Comic Book Day @ Bedrock City Comics, Love & Rockets, Mooncop by Tom Gauld; Rachel Rising Vol 1-2 by Terry Moore. David - Shock Waves podcast (from the hosts of Killer POV); Bloodcast; The Damn Fine Cast Devan Faraci's "I am Biased" article. Opening clip is from Portlandia. In this episode, the disco trio finally takes on graphic novels. Goliath by Tom Gauld and My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf, both empathetic takes on infamous villains. But should they be empathetic? Opinions clash as these two very different books come under the microscope. Not surprisingly, the addition of visual art changes the entire reading experience and the discussion. But first, in the Bookshelf Revisit, Rider will say the name Guybrush Threepwood, Tod will narrate the inner voice of a fish, and Julia heads to Shawshank. Also, Baby Hitler makes an appearance.
