Dr. Stuart Edmonds is the Executive Vice President of Mission, Research and Advocacy at the Canadian Cancer Society; he spoke to Andrew Carter.
THE MEDICAL RECORD: ONTARIO PROPOSES EMPOWERING NURSE PRACTITIONERS TO LEAD MEDICAL CARE IN LTC FACILITIES Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Alisa Naiman, a family doctor practicing comprehensive primary care in Toronto, Dr. Malcolm Moore, Medical Oncologist, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Dr. Jamie Spiegelman, Internal Medicine and Critical Care Physician at Humber River Hospital. Ontario's new long-term care bill proposal would allow nurse practitioners to oversee residents' medical care, replacing physician medical directors. The bill also mandates dementia care programs and addresses abuse. Funding for adult day programs, and two innovative pilot projects focusing on emotional care and home-based services is also included. CANADA'S TOBACCO GIANTS PIVOT TO WELLNESS PRODUCTS AMID LANDMARK $32.5B SETTLEMENT Libby is joined by Cynthia Callard, executive director of Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada and Rob Cunningham, Senior Policy Analyst at the Canadian Cancer Society. Canada's top tobacco companies may face a landmark class-action settlement to cover healthcare costs, damages to smokers, and fund research. Smoking rates have dropped from 27% to 12% in the past 25 years, with teen smoking falling to just 2%. Some provinces are considering age-based sales bans. FORD'S LEGISLATION TO DISMANTLE HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS DELAYED UNTIL NEXT YEAR Libby is joined by Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown. Ontario has proposed legislation to allow the removal of homeless encampments and expand police powers on public drug use, following requests from 12 city mayors. However, the bill won't be debated or passed until early next year.
A cancer diagnosis isn't only terrifying, it's also costly — a new study from the Canadian Cancer Society reveals that the average cancer patient will spend more than $30,000 out of pocket on their treatment. Matt Galloway speaks to one of the study's authors, and a cancer survivor who had to decide between paying for medication and making rent.

A new Canadian Cancer Society report highlights the financial strain of cancer diagnoses in Canada, with patients and families facing an average cost of $33,000. While Ontario recently announced extra support for caregivers, questions remain about its effectiveness. Meanwhile, the holiday GST break on some food items has faced widespread criticism. SYRIA'S UNCERTAIN FUTURE POST-ASSAD REGIME Libby is joined by Dr. Amos Guiora, Professor of Law at the University of Utah and a former legal advisor to the IDF in Gaza and Dr. Elliot Tepper, Professor of International Relations at Carleton University. The Assad regime in Syria collapsed after rebel forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, seized Damascus. The group, once linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda, is still considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and Western nations. This marks a major setback for Iran and Russia, with uncertain regional implications. A NEW STUDY REVEALS THE STAGGERING COSTS CANCER PATIENTS FACE Libby is joined by Dr. Jennifer Gillis, Director of Surveillance for the Canadian Cancer Society. The financial burden of cancer is significant, with total costs to society projected at $37.7 billion in 2024. This includes $30.2 billion in health system expenses and $7.5 billion for patients and caregivers. In the first year after diagnosis, lifetime costs for patients and caregivers average nearly $33,000.

The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased the settlement is almost done, but it wants some additions to the terms. Rob Cunningham is a lawyer and senior policy advisor with the cancer society, and he spoke with the CBC's Leigh Anne Power.

One of the most pressing questions facing the peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising industry is, "How do we better engage the next generation of fundraisers?"With each generational shift, it can be daunting to understand the motivations of the emerging group and adapt to their preferences. Together, they discuss how and why the organization has placed a strategic emphasis on the Gen Z & Young Millennial demographic and dig into the unique lessons learned about youth volunteers, including communication preferences and messaging. There is a Democrat trend starting where Democrats believe they're screwed with both Trump and Biden. That doesn't end well for the left. Unaired video shows Nancy Pelosi admitting responsibility for not having National Guard at Capitol. Trump's mass deportation plan wins critical support from Swing Voters and the Canadian Cancer Society renames cervix as the "front hole" to include Trans people.
Israel performs a hostage recovery effort in Gaza. The Biden Administration is telling the border patrol to ignore Joe Biden's executive order and let the illegals in anyway. Trans activists go after The Canadian Cancer Society after they use the term “cervix”. The EU sees conservative candidates make big gains in their elections. It's a rare week when we don't hear about somebody having a fundraiser to help pay for out-of-town cancer treatment. Right now, people can access the province's medical transportation program for help with their expenses. But the program covers only part of the costs, and users have complained about long waits to receive the money they're entitled to. The Canadian Cancer Society runs its own transportation support program, and It wants to partner with the provincial government to eliminate all travel costs for cancer patients, potentially saving them thousands of dollars. The problem has been getting the government to sit down and make a plan. Heather Mulligan is the Atlantic manager for the cancer society, and she spoke with CBC's Leigh Anne Power.

Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Larry Ostola talks to Bill Vigars about his book, Terry & Me: Inside the Marathon of Hope. A twenty-two-year-old cancer survivor and amputee, Terry set out from St. John's Newfoundland in April 1980, aiming to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His first months on the road in Atlantic Canada and Quebec were not only physically taxing—he ran the equivalent of a marathon a day—but frustrating as Canadians were slow to recognize and support his endeavor. That all changed when he met a young man named Bill Vigars, who on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society led a campaign to ensure that every person in Canada knew the story of this outstanding young man. Vigars was by Fox's side through all the highs and lows until the tragic end of his journey in Thunder Bay. A recurrence of his cancer cut short Terry's dream and, soon, his life. Now, for the first time, Vigars tells the inside story of the Marathon of Hope—the logistical nightmares, boardroom battles, and moments of pure magic—while giving us a fresh, insightful portrait of one of the greatest Canadians who ever lived. Bill Vigars was the Director of Public Relations and Fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society's Ontario Division, and acted as Terry Fox's public relations organizer, his close friend and confidante. He set up several key events as the Run entered Toronto. Image Credit: Sutherland House If you like our work, please consider supporting it: bit.ly/support_WTY.
