Interview with Singer-songwriter Multi-instrumentalist Darwin Meiners! Night Crickets, a long-distance groove affair conducted during the drawn-out days of lockdown and beyond. Featuring David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin Meiners. Iconic and foundational bands in the history of alternative music certainly include Bauhaus, Love And Rockets, and Violent Femmes. San Francisco-born artist Darwin Meiners was a fan of all three. A chance meeting 13 years ago with David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) grew into a friendship, and Darwin not only became a bandmate but David J's manager. After reaching out to Victor DeLorenzo through e-mail, Darwin met the Violent Femmes drummer after the Femmes' Coachella set in 2013. Soon after the three collaborated on Darwin's 2014 release Souvenir. As the pandemic took hold, Darwin was looking for a new project to occupy the lock-down time and approached Victor, who was keen to proceed and suggested that David join as well. The musical trust established between these three was immediate and Night Crickets were born. Within weeks a global process was initiated between them, the recordings eventually forming the album, A Free Society. To say this is something of a dream come true for music fans would be entirely accurate. (The band's name came from one of many Zoom meetings between the three members. After addressing various pressing musical issues the conversation rambled somewhat and turned to the subject of David Lynch, with David J telling an anecdote which was told to him by Lynch's sound designer, John Neff. Lynch had asked Neff to obtain a field recording of crickets chirping at night for inclusion in Mulholland Drive. When Neff played him the tape, the director immediately recognized the sound that the insects make when it is light which is apparently a little different to their nocturnal chirp. “No! No! No! These are day crickets, John! I want my night crickets!” Victor, Darwin, and David then shared a look of mutual realization and instantly agreed that the project now had a name!) In Night Crickets' own words: Night Crickets, a long distance groove affair conducted during the drawn out days of lockdown and beyond. Audio files shared from Los Angeles to Milwaukee, from London to the San Francisco Bay, and the ghosts of Candlestick Park shimmer through the fog, the Devil comes a-knocking on Peter Laughner's door and Amanda Gorman conjures forth words of inspiration for the dawn of the new millennium. David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin spearhead a loose collective of like-minded creative souls left stranded in their respective locales due to the great pandemic, yet through sheer tenacity and a burning desire to collaborate and create they transcend the restrictions of the times and pull together a glorious ‘gesamtkunstwerk' that draws from the past, the present and the imagined future. Hark! Night Crickets are chirping as the world is set on fire and the sun is going down. Interview with Victor DeLorenzo Of Violent Femmes & The Night Crickets DeLorenzo was born in 1954, the son of Victor and Charlotte DeLorenzo, grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and has lived in Milwaukee since. He has been a drummer since the age of 16 while attending St. Catherine's High School (Racine, Wisconsin), and has been an actor since the age of five. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, he auditioned for and was accepted into Theatre X in 1976, and worked with them in various roles for more than 20 years.[ As a drummer, DeLorenzo paired up with bassist Brian Ritchie in 1980, as a rhythm section they called "Violent Femmes". When singer, guitarist, and songwriter Gordon Gano joined them in 1981, the band kept the name.[2] DeLorenzo's father loaned the band $10,000 to record their eponymous debut album in 1982. However, the band was forced to delay its release until 1983 after they signed to Slash Records. DeLorenzo's signature sound is a result of his minimalist drum kit. He often uses nothing more than a snare drum, a tranceaphone and steel brushes. The tranceaphone consists of a metal bushel basket inverted over a tom. He favors this style of kit because in their early days, the band often played on the streets. DeLorenzo continued to act with Theatre X, and record and tour with the Femmes until 1993, when he left to devote more time to acting and to recording his own music. He toured as part of Moe Tucker's band in that year. In 1996 he opened a recording studio called "Joe's Real Recording" He has released three solo records since 1990. In addition to recording his own music, he has played with several side projects, including Ash Can School. In 2000, he teamed up with Ritchie to put together a Femmes compilation, and subsequently rejoined the band until it disbanded again in 2009.In March 2013, Gano, Ritchie and DeLorenzo reformed Violent Femmes once more and played a homecoming show at the Summerfest music festival in their native Milwaukee. Three months later, in July, the band announced a new line-up with Dresden Dolls member Brian Viglione as the band's drummer. DeLorenzo confirmed in a statement that he had left the Femmes permanently because of a failure of the band members to resolve their long-standing business disputes. DeLorenzo performs percussion in the chamber rock duo Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. Nineteen Thirteen's recording of "Hurricane Noel" was featured in the 2011 TED Global Conference. Interview with David J of Bauhaus, The Night Crickets On David J Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction once described David J as the Avant of the Avant-garde. Never was a truer word spoken . . . A founder member of one of the most influential bands since The Velvet Underground; namely BAUHAUS. Bauhaus spearheaded the post-punk Alternative music scene of the early ‘80's with a string of innovative albums and singles, including, for many, perhaps their defining moment, a song that is ranked as a classic and feasibly the pinnacle of the entire Gothic scene and beyond, the nine minute plus epic slab of industrial dub that is 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', featuring the lyrics of David J. On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards rip it up with venerable character actor and musician James Duval who has had one helluva career. His career starts with what would become a lifelong cinematic relationship. His work with filmmaker Gregg Araki has spawned four feature films, one MTV pilot and one television series including TOTALLY F***ED UP, THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE, KABOOM, "This Is How the World Ends" and "Now Apocalypse". Jimmy would go on to a career that spans over 30 years and over 175 credits. Some of his other most known films include early trangressive masterwork MOD FUCK EXPLOSION, INDEPENDENCE DAY (as Randy Quaid's son), Doug Liman's GO, the GONE IN 60 SECONDS remake (with Nic Cage and Angelina Jolie), SLC PUNK and it's sequel PUNK'S DEAD: SLC PUNK 2, the Sundance horror film MAY, he won an award for the film THE DOE BOY, SUSHI GIRL, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and, most recently, I, CHALLENGER (see episode 302!). There is one movie that he can never quite shake. It was a small Sundance film that rolled out to deathly box office numbers but over time has steadily become one of the most well-known cult films of all time. That, of course, is DONNIE DARKO where he plays Frank the Rabbit. Then there is the music side of Jimmy. As a guitarist he led a band called Antoneus Maximus & The Nuthouze Band and played in another called Gene Wilder with fellow filmmakers Brian McGuire and Bret Roberts. He associated strongly with jangle pop band The Jazz Butcher and worked with David J from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets. So get out your yoga mat, light some incense, drink some herbal tea as we venture into the career, loves and passions, and overall positive and energetic state of mind of one James Duval on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. Please remember to hit "like" and "subscribe" on our YouTube Channel, Spotify and iTunes. Tell your friends. If you have any comments, questions, ideas for topics or guests please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com. We'll get back to ya as soon as we ask Frank the Rabbit about this nuclear warhead that just rose up in our fucking living room
We always enjoy the formation of a new supergroup of classic alternative artists; the newest is Night Crickets with David J. (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets), Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes) and multi-instrumentalist Darwin Meiners. The trio were working together on a project, which evolved into the formation of a band with its David Lynch-inspired name.In this episode of Revenge of the 80s Radio, David J. talks with Chris about Night Crickets, their first album, A Free Society, how they melded together and stories behind some of their tracks. After our conversation, we play their “Candlestick Park” song which centers around a personal story involving the Beatles' last live concert (at the titular stadium).

With The Book Tour (Top Shelf Productions), cartoonist Andi Watson makes his triumphant return to 'grown-up' comics, spinning a tale more Waugh than Kafka about a midlist British author on a book tour from hell. We get into the book's path to publication, the new drawing style he developed for this one, why he's shifted genres & styles over the course of his career, and how this book's visual setting was inspired by Atget's early-morning photos of Paris. We talk about the YA and middle-reader comics he's made in recent years, the quirks of writing for different age-tiers, how comics publishing has changed since he got into the field in the '90s, how Love & Rockets bent his brain at 18 & sent him on this wayward path, and why he's looking forward to going on a real book tour for The Book Tour someday! Grab a slice of pie with podcaster Gil Roth as we discuss his surprising (and my unsurprising ) guest with the greatest number of downloads, the advice John Crowley gave him about his potential writing career, how a guy who used to memorize X-Men comics got turned on to Love & Rockets, the way we process the deaths of former guests, the song he wants played at his memorial service, how to get often-interviewed guests not to regurgitate their favorite soundbites, why no comic book movie beats the first Superman, how he became the publisher of every letter Samuel R. Delany wrote in 1984, why readers thought he was the secret identity of another writer during his days reviewing for The Comics Journal, the Italo Calvino quote which has kept him going through the pandemic, and much more.
This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, we will have a New Wave Dance Party with club cuts and extended remixes from Spear of Destiny, Love & Rockets, Blondie, Everything But the Girl and many more classic alternative artists

Harden and the Rockets are in salary cap hell, and what they got obviously ain't getting it done. Good luck, Houston. And Telvin Smith says "football ain't everything", but isn't that convenient after football has just paid you millions? What do you think is take would be oh, and his choices would be, if hr didn't have millions in the bank?

We talked about Love & Rockets way back on episode 2 and this week we return to the Northampton trio to pit their debut album Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven against their alternative radio breakthrough Earth, Sun Moon in the latest installment of our VINYL CAGE MATCH series. We began listening to these records 30 years ago. Do they both still hold up today and if so, does one more so than the other? We debate. He's been on my list of dream-guests since I launched the podcast, and now Love & Rockets cartoonist Jaime Hernandez joins the show! We talk about his new book of Latin American folktales, The Dragon Slayer (TOON Graphic), the family-centric folktales of his own youth in Oxnard, CA, the fun of drawing for kids, and the times he's felt Maggie Chascarillo had nothing left to say. We get into the origins of Love & Rockets, how he learned to tell a story and still develop characters, the L&R story that marked a turning point for him, what prompted a big reunion storyline of his key characters, the thing he most hates drawing, the first time he saw someone with a Love & Rockets tattoo (and the stories of his own tattoos), and the vital question: is punk rock dead? Plus, Katie Skelly (My Pretty Vampire) talks about what Jaime's comics mean to her! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

This episode explains a lot about your hosts, whether they like it or not!

Elvis! 2000 AD Prog 2000! Attack on Titan! Magazine-sized Love & Rockets! Cerebus! ATARI! ATARI?!?!? Yes, ATARI! In fact, this episode not only covers the catalog Green section (as in, the greener grass you keep seeing from the Big Two side of the fence), but delves into a decades-spanning video console discussion. So whether you dig Thrill Power, Nintendo Power, both, or neither, there's a little something for everyone in this first episode in the lads' Previews double-header! Fifty odd minutes of uninterrupted shadows + light featuring the music of Bauhaus, Tones on Tails and Love + Rockets -- life is but a dream.
In this episode of Watch.Read.Listen., we discuss the issues with Fanboys, arguing for more inclusiveness in the various fan cultures. We break down four main problems that we've observed both in others and ourselves: 1) fan tribalism, 2) gatekeepers, 3) "cheer pressure" (coined by Brady from Hello Internet and Numberphile), and 4) lack of critical thought around their fandom. On the more serious side, we discussed briefly the death of comic creator Darwyn Cooke. His loved ones encourage donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Hero Initiative, which is dedicated to helping comic creators in need. This Week: Duane - Stuff You Missed in History Class (two-parter on Hercules Mulligan in particular); Marathon Man (1976) and the Canon episode on it; Free Comic Book Day @ Bedrock City Comics, Love & Rockets, Mooncop by Tom Gauld; Rachel Rising Vol 1-2 by Terry Moore. This week's episode is a Hernandez-centric show. On it, the Two Guys with PhDs play a little catch-up with some of Gilbert and Jaime's comics that have come out over the past few months. They begin with the latest installment of Love & Rockets: New Stories (Fantagraphics), and most of the tales in this volume continue what began in last year's annual. In fact, both Andy and Derek feel that New Stories 8 can be best appreciated, and better understood, when read alongside its predecessor. Jaime's contributions -- the Princess Animus, Maggie and Hopey, and Tonta storylines -- are fairly straightforward, although the guys aren't entirely sure how Princess Animus will ultimately fit into the Love & Rockets world. (Is it similar to the Ti-Girls with Jaime playing around with the superhero genre again? Might Penny Century be involved in some way?) But things aren't as clear-cut when it comes to Gilbert's selections, all centered on Fritz in some way. Over the last two New Stories annuals, Gilbert has been mapping out a complex narrative concerning the B-movie star and her imitators, chock-full of unusual characters, many of whom look alike...and purposefully so. The guys comment on the ways in which Gilbert is manipulating his sequential chronology and the general weirdness surrounding Fritz's world. And given the labyrinthine nature of this current volume of Love & Rockets, Derek advocates for a much-needed Hernandez brothers wiki and challenges listeners to begin creating one. Next, they turn to the new edition of Girl Crazy (Dark Horse Books). This originally began as a three-issue miniseries published by Dark Horse in 1996 and then collected as a single volume the following year. But that book has been out of print for some time, and now the publisher is rereleasing this new hardbound edition to stand alongside other Dark Horse books by Gilbert, including Speak of the Devil, Citizen Rex (with his brother, Mario), Fatima: The Blood Spinners, Loverboys, and last year's Grip: The Strange World of Men. Both Andy and Derek note that, with Girl Crazy, the story still holds up, and it's yet another example of Gilbert's no-holds-barred storytelling. At the same time, they point out that the art in Girl Crazy is noticeably different from his most recent style, with its detailed texturing and heavier inks. Finally, the guys wrap up with the second issue of Gilbert's Blubber (Fantagraphics), a comic-book series that is a strange amalgamation of experimental storytelling and pornography. This is definitely not a title for those with tender sensibilities and who are easily offended. In fact, Derek and Andy point out that, for the most part, all the stories in this issue include a lot of sucking and f**king...and not only between humans. There are zombies, robots, and fantastical creatures involved, as well. It's all weird, wacky, and fun, but after discussing Blubber #2 the Two Guys really feel like they need to take a shower.

I do, however have a love for these snacks (in moderation of course), and while living on the West Coast I started using chopsticks to eat these snacks. "We move through a human-centric world as if that is reality, but we're surrounded by other species, and their species is centric to their world. I'm interested in how that works, not in humanizing other animals." In honor of K-9 Veterans Day, our guests are Sheila Keenan and Nathan Fox, the writer and the artist behind Dogs of War, a YA graphic novel about dogs on the battlefield. We talk about their collaborative process and how it developed over the course of this project, as well as the challenges of writing about war for a YA audience, how the trajectory of dog use parallels the development of military technology, and the ways that our empathy for animals can help us better understand the cost of conflict. "I want the power of time and imagination that resides in the white space between panels." Also, find out about their circuitous paths to comics, the alchemy of a writer's vision interpreted by an artist, why Nathan launched an MFA program at the School of Visual Arts, and how Sheila's husband wooed her with a page of Love & Rockets!

No Description Necessary to explain to you, who Dubfire is, A legend in the Techno Scene with his highly Respected Label "SCI-TEC Digital Audio" In 1991, Shirazinia "Dubfire" and fellow DC resident Sharam Tayebi formed Deep Dish, a DJ and production duo that became notable for their productions and DJ sets. Shirazinia and Tayebi established Deep Dish Records, and they went on to win a Grammy in 2002 for their remix of Dido's "Thank You." Following their successes as Deep Dish, both Shirazinia and Tayebi began to produce and DJ individually. Shirazinia used his long-time stage name "Dubfire" for his solo productions. Shirazinia's solo sound differs noticeably from that of Deep Dish, consisting of minimal, techno, and house instead of the predominantly progressive house sound of Deep Dish. His production I Feel Speed, which is a cover of an obscure Love & Rockets song, features his own vocals. Shirazinia also sings in In Love With a Friend on Deep Dish's debut album. I Feel Speed has appeared in the advertisement of the Volkswagen Eos. In 2007, Shirazinia announced the launch of his new record label, Science + Technology Digital Audio, also known simply as SCI + TEC.[1] The label, which began as an outlet for Dubfire's original productions, is now home to a roster of globally based artists.
