In January 2021, Nick Covington was a social studies teacher in Iowa fully-immersed in his classroom and students. Successful, purposeful, and thriving. A year later, after being swept up into the culture war against educators and facing targeting and harassment for doing his job, he handed in his resignation later in February 2022.Once he finished out that school year, Nick moved into his position as a leader of the non-profit he cofounded, The Human Restoration Project—an organization doing the increasingly-important work of moving towards an education system that centers the humanity of all-involved, but most especially students. In today's conversation, Nick shares about his experience in the classroom, his exit from it, and why he is more resolute than ever about the importance of and hope within the work he is doing now. (Seriously: if this is your first time hearing about it, go check it out!)Links to check out from the conversation:* HumanRestorationProject.org* Third Coast Learning Collaborative* “Current Events Do Not Belong in History Class” (the original Medium post detailing Nick's experience leaving the classroom)Also: how do you feel as a teacher right now in this current moment? Mr. Tom Cox's approach to telling great stories in the classroom starts with a self-limiting 3×5 notecard. The challenge when telling any story from history is that all such stories run together, are infinitely entangled, and lack the defined clarity of exposition, crisis, climax, and denouement. Mr. Cox provides a practical framework and examples for “putting flesh on dry bones” in an effective, compelling way that students will remember. In this episode, our guest (an AP U.S. History teacher) and our host (an AP Government teacher) delve into the worthy American most likely missing from your U.S. history or government class. Orestes Brownson was a nineteenth-century political thinker who wrote about the American project through his unique lens as a post-Civil War American-Catholic. He was well known in his time but is often only featured in the footnotes for the Election of 1840, the Transcendental Movement, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Brownson's essays, though, belong in the classroom. They seek to answer with optimism and insightful reflection: what is this country all about? For what did our sons die in this great Civil War? Do you think you could become a Nazi? With the right circumstances, the right environment, the right pressures? In 1967, none of the students in Ron Jones' high school history class thought so - until they did.
Show Notes the year end news is beginning to trickle out already. The 2024 most listened-to podcast rankings from iHeartRadio changed things up a bit, sharing which shows were the most listened to by users based on which generation they fall into. Among Gen Alpha, a show with a school-like vibe ranks first as iHeart says Stuff You Missed in History Class was the most popular with the demographic of people born between 2010 and 2024. Among Gen Z listeners, This Is Important ranks on top. Millennial users of iHeart most streamed the on-demand version of “The Breakfast Club” radio show. Gen X listeners had something in common with Gen Alpha — they both went for something in the History genre — but Gen Xers were more interested in the bad guys. The age group's biggest podcast was Behind the Bastards, the series that focuses on the worst people in history. Baby Boomers were more politically focused, with The Dan Bongino Show their top podcast pick in 2024. Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share!
