PIMMON is arguably Australia’s most well known and most successful experimental music producers, having recorded for various labels around the world (including Tigerbeat6 and Fat Cat) and collaborating with the likes of FENNESZ and OREN AMBARCHI.Over the preceding eighteen months, PIMMON released five albums of new material, from 2009’s ‘Smudge Another Yesterday’ to his forthcoming split cassette on Spanish Magic, which comes backed with one of his earliest recordings from 1983 under the name YCLEPT DINMAKERS.Stu Buchanan talks with Pimmon about this productive patch and discovers whether his early 80s material is really worth a listen, and whether any of the so-called chillwave cassette bands actually sound any good with the hiss removed.
Mapping and reconsidering terrain traversed by contemporaries such as Ben Frost and Pimmon, we talk with Sydney producer Blake Freele and hear a live in-studio performance. Blake’s work ranges from vast and spacious drones to rhythmically driven electronic compositions, married with often intensely processed guitar improvisations.
SCISSOR LOCK is an experimental project of Sydney musician Marcus Whale, exploring the tension between organic and electronic elements in sound, utilising guitar, reeds, voice, piano, singing bowls and bells along with somewhat lo-fi digital processing. In this interview (originally broadcast 12th November 2009), Marcus discussed his remix project, ‘Now’, featuring contributions from Raven, Shoeb Ahmad and Pimmon. The podcast also includes an exclusive, in-studio performance of ‘Out By Holy Land (Scissor Lock vs Pimmon vs Scissor Lock Remix)’.
