Join me for My Chat with Derek Mather in The Laddie Snug at Artisan. On a recent pilgrimage to the magical whisky island of Islay, off the coast of Scotland with a couple of good buddies, we made an overnight detour to the small town of Wishaw, midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, to the famous Artisan restaurant. Head chef, owner, curator and co-founder of the Friends of Bruichladdich FaceBook group, Derek Mather, founded this whisky mecca 16 yrs ago..... and the grub ain't half bad either..... Derek and his wife Fiona have amassed 1000's of bottles of Independently bottled Scotch whisky, all open and for sale by the dram at their Artisan Restaurant. Derek doesn't believe in full bottles and prices each dram with a marginal mark-up, so that whisky lovers can visit and afford to drink some of the most fantastic whisky bottles they will ever have the pleasure of sampling. We sat in his Laddie Snug and had a great chat about what he's been up to. It was an absolute pleasure. The Public Audit Committee have published their report on Adult Mental Health in Scotland.  The Committee heard compelling evidence that the demand for mental health care is continuing to rise, with the Covid-19 pandemic and cost-of-living crisis compounding the issues faced by an adult mental health system already under significant strain.  In this podcast, Convener Richard Leonard MSP travelled to Chris's House, a suicidal crisis centre in Wishaw, to discuss the report's findings with Anne Rowan, founder of Chris's House, and Dr Pavan Srireddy, Vice Chair, Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland. Together they discussed issues including the increasing demand for services, pressures on staff, how outcomes are measured and what needs to happen next to ensure people receive the help they need. In this episode, I interview Stephen Gallagher, a commercial property investor, who shares insights into his background in aerospace engineering and financial services, as well as his journey into property investment. He discusses his investment model with SSAS and details a successful project in Wishaw near Glasgow, where he transformed a CMO (Commercial Multiple Occupancy) property into a thriving serviced office space. Stephen elaborates on the financial aspects, including valuation, rental income, and the SSAS syndication strategy used for funding. He also touches on some future projects involving boutique apartments and aparthotels. KEY TAKEAWAYS Stephen's investment strategy with SSAS is the prime example of how to get good returns within a pension scheme. Stephen emphasises the importance of collaborating with others in the industry, sharing knowledge, and building relationships with professionals and investors. Starting with smaller projects, like the one in Hamilton, can build confidence and provide a stepping stone for larger commercial property investments. Utilising professional services like quantity surveyors and other experts can help in navigating construction costs, planning permissions, and other challenges in property development. BEST MOMENTS "I think engage with some folks that are doing it.

It was a tremendous privilege to pick Mark Humphrey's brain who has insight about broad domains of the brain like few others. His new book The Spike: An Epic Journey Through the Brain in 2.1 Seconds takes us on a journey through the brain starting at the retina and ending in the spinal cord. As we follow spikes along, we learn how information is processed in the brain, but also how it's simply lost and forgotten. Mark has done his PhD with Kevin Gurney, who together with Tony Prescott and Peter Redgrave has published an influential computational model of the basal ganglia in 2001. We disentangle how it differs from the Albin-DeLong model, talk about implications for whole-brain computational models and the mechanism of action of DBS. Based on a twitter thread that Mark once published about the Wishaw decorticate rat experiments, I ask him: Does the brain even need the cortex? Finally, we touch about compression of data and his recent paper about a weak and strong principle of dimensionality reduction of the brain.

Covid 19 is a real disease that has sadly caused fatalities. But some people are profiting richly from it – in fact, it has become something of a gold mine, with compromised scientists, offshore firms, banking executives and big tech firms jostling to win their slice of the corona pie. In an effort to protect these juicy financial profits, an edifice of establishment science has been constructed, and any scientist who dares to entertain an opinion that runs contrary to this edifice risks losing their reputation and livelihood. Maybe this is why mainstream science seems – in my opinion – increasingly arrogant. In my opinion, this is not establishment science's finest hour. This week I got to sit and talk to the amazing Kat from @yer_awrite the popular Instagram page. Kats page showcased her pop culture art work which I'm sure everyone can relate to from still game, Amy Winehouse, Marvel etc, each image ties into her blog which is written in a down to earth, conversational way with humour and Glaswegian dialect and feels just like you're talking to yer pal. The happy Yellow and white images are all over everyone's Instagram stories which help spread positivity and create a great social media community. The page is now over 18k followers. I'm not allowed to say I'm a fan as Kat's not into that patter but I'm a admirer of her work and have been for some time. The page works strongly with a charity which we have worked with in the past. Chris's House in Wishaw. Who help with suicide awareness and means a lot to many people in this area. We discuss how Kat decided to start posting, how is grown, where she sees it going and then we go off topic as she's extremely easy to talk to with good banter. Her book choices are fantastic which are heavily influenced by her other passion in her life, working with kids. Her choices will help with anyone looking for new ideas for bedtime reading with their kids which have a positive message. Kat had a positive and infectious personality which makes this one an easy listen and will be sure to brighten your day.

WE'VE had matchday two of the West of Scotland League – and it's Darvel and Clydebank flying high at the top of the Premier Division with maximum points. In another season Shots Bon Accord might have been battling it out with them in the top flight too. But instead they're one of 15 clubs now looking on from the outside after choosing to sit out a season without fans. The Bonny had hopes of winning promotion from the West Juniors Championship last season. But the early finish to the campaign because of the pandemic saw them narrowly miss out. Their boss John McKeown joins us on the show this week. We'll get his views on the situation they've found themselves in – and look at how he'll handle things at Hannah Park between now and next season. Plus we'll look back at a lower league playing and managerial career which started out at Ipswich as a kid. We'll hear how hard it was when a hip injury ended his playing days at the age of just 27 and the transition into the dugout at Wishaw. There's his first training session as Cumnock boss, when just seven players turned up, and why he feared the sack after losing 6-0 to Auchinleck just a few days later. Plus John reveals one of the few times he cried as a boss. We'll also discuss the impact of former Lanark chairman and Juniors chief Tam Anderson, who sadly passed away on Saturday. It's all here as we go Down The Divisions. Apologies for the poorer sound quality this week. If you have any comments we'd love to hear from you. He was a dear pal when I was busking on the mean streets of Wishaw and died after living about 1000 lives. I'd like to think he'd approve of the trouble I caused in the chapel, cemetery and boozer that day.
