Ben Frost grew up working in his parents' gift shop. Much like how they produced gifts to be displayed and sold, Frost does the same, only with paintings. His style is bold, in-your-face, and instantly recognizable, but to find that style, Ben had to branch out from his home in Australia and see the world.Collect our Limited Edition Prints: https://myartisreal.com/product-category/print/available/?orderby=dateSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/myartisrealBen Frost Website: https://www.benfrostisdead.com/ Music Credits: CUE Shop, Xylo-Ziko - Osmosis, Podington Bear - Starling,
For this month's episode we've gone back to ten years, only a few years before the podcast began to talk about our favourite songs of 2014, including trve kvlt black metal, avant garde noise, sparkly pop bangers, swedish alt country, & kraut influenced post rock. We also discuss whether Elbow make suitable gym music, global conspiracy theories involving giant stone owls, and songs that sound like you're about to be burned in a wicker man. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alcest, Alvvays, Babymetal, Devandra Banhart, Beck, Charly Bliss, Elbow, EMA, First Aid Kit, Ben Frost, Grouper, Ben Howard, King Creosote, Jenny Lewis, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, J Mascis, Mayhem, Mogwai, Opeth, Public Service Broadcasting, Röyksopp & Robyn, Run The Jewels, Svalbard, Swans, Taylor Swift, Thou, Ultimate Painting, Sharon Van Etten, Warpaint, & James Yorkston.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2juBbBjb0YxzF6VMAvNIEi?si=4334ba0599c44034Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. Brìghde Chaimbeul, Rhodri Davies, Sam Amidon and Linda Buckley discuss the roles of tradition and place in music, and what they might think about when performing.Brìghde Chaimbeul is a Gaelic musician, composer and bagpipe player. Her music stems from traditional Gaelic material, particularly sourced from archival recordings, of songs, stories and music from the Highlands and islands of Scotland. It also explores wider musical influences, such as a variety of global piping traditions from eastern Europe, Cape Breton and Ireland. She has collaborated with artists including Ross Ainslie, Gruff Rhys, Martin Green, Carlos Nunez and Allan MacDonald. Last year she released the album Carry Them With Us in collaboration with Colin Stetson, weaving together textural drones, trance atmospheres and instrumental folk traditions.Rhodri Davies is a Welsh musician who plays harp, electric harp and live electronics, as well as building harp installations. He started playing the harp at the age of 7 and is classically trained on the orchestral pedal harp; he also plays harps from a range of different cultures, modifying their sounds with different techniques and pushing the boundaries of how the instrument can sound. He's released seven solo albums and regularly works with groups such as Hen Ogledd, Cranc, the Sealed Knot and Common Objects. Sam Amidon is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Vermont. He plays the fiddle, guitar and banjo, and is a member of the Icelandic music collective/record label Bedroom Community. He has released a string of acclaimed albums, ranging in theme from interpretations of traditional Irish fiddle pieces to old-time melodies and tales from traditional American folk history. His collaborators include classical composer Nico Muhly, experimental composer/producer Ben Frost, composer/violinist Eyvind Kang, guitar legend Bill Frisell and veteran jazz drummer Milford Graves.Linda Buckley is an Irish composer and musician who creates electronic and acoustic music working across many disciplines, most notably film, and drone and dark ambient music. She's worked in many collaborative contexts, including scoring films such as Nothing Compares by Kathryn Ferguson and To The Moon by Tadhg O'Sullivan. Recent collaborators include Liam Byrne and Crash Ensemble, Gudrun Gut and Andrew Zolinsky.
This month's episode welcomes Reykjavik based Australian producer, composer, and sound artist @BenFrost. Early albums like Theory of Machines, By The Throat, and Solaris established Ben Frost as a frontrunner in conceptual, boundary-pushing, and sometimes aggressive electronic music — echoed in his earth shaking live performances, which themselves are celebrations of spine tingling bass frequencies and volume. Not for the faint of heart, his music is inspired by punk rock guitar, minimalism, and in the case of his most recent album, heavy metal, often eschewing storytelling altogether in favour of a visceral, physical musical experience. And yet, his work in film and TV scoring, dance, and even opera suggests he's still interested in narrative artwork. In this conversation, Ben and I explore the different facets of storytelling, or lack thereof, as a musician, his new album Scope Neglect, and his approach to composition across these decidedly different fields. ++ Music: "Unreal in the Eyes of the Dead" - Ben Frost (2024) "Chimera" - Ben Frost (2024) "Ich Dachte, Ich Haette Mehr Zeit" - Ben Frost, from the Netflix series Dark (2019) "The Burning World" - Ben Frost (2022) ++ Follow AIR Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: https://airpodcast.substack.com/

Ian's back with a slate of savagery from all over the world of metal on today's show! We'll start with a taste of experimental noise composer Ben Frost's stunning new record Scope Neglect, then move into a decimating set of grindcore, highlighted by heavy hitters Escuela Grind, Pig Destroyer and Brutal Truth, plus a classic from Swedish grind legends Nasum. We'll also survey some of the best in the world of death metal with rippers from Slimelord, Tomb Mold and Vastum, while hyping next Saturday's March 30th show at the Rickshaw featuring Wake and Egregore! We'll also get into some new bandgers from traditional heavy metal masters with rippers from Judas Priest, Cirith Ungol and Haunt, and dig a classic track from Saxon out of the Graveyard!
"I often myself being responsible for a film's music, but also fighting for its absence." The composer discusses movie scoring, his love of opera and his new album, Scope Neglect, on Mute Records. The multidisciplinary Australian artist Ben Frost might best be known for his score work: he's soundtracked Netflix shows like Dark and its spinoff 1899, as well as a number of major motion pictures and video games. While his formal studies were in visual art, he started experimenting with music-making from an early age, homing in on a unique sound that is truly a melange of his influences in punk, black metal, classical and modern minimalism. His unique approach to composition has led him to some extreme places to capture field recordings, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Amazon rainforest and the empty hulls of fishing boats docked on the banks of Icelandic port towns. Artists like Steve Albini, Björk, Brian Eno and the band SWANS have tapped Frost to work with them, and he's performed extensively as a solo performer and as part of an A/V outfit at the world's biggest festivals and art world circuits. In this episode of the RA Exchange, he sits down with senior producer Chloe Lula to discuss his latest venture, a full-length album, Scope Neglect, on Mute. It pulls heavily from his proclivity for guitar music and metal, but still nods to the cinematic minimalism that has become one of his work's primary tropes. Frost dissects some of the recording techniques he used to make the record—he borrowed from the methods used by Mark Hollis of the band Talk Talk—as well as his studio practice, his love of opera and his approach to writing scores. Listen to the episode in full.

Ahora me siento bastante optimista.
In putting this podcast together, we had a whole range of fascinating conversations, not all of which fitted into the standard format for this series, where each episode is focused on a particular skill. One of those conversations was with Korn Ferry, the global consulting firm. Korn Ferry works with companies and leaders to help them put in place the optimal structures, roles, and responsibilities, hire the right people to fill those roles, and advises them on how to reward and motivate their workforce. So as you can imagine, it's a company that has a huge amount of interest in, and expertise on, the subject of this podcast: how to future-proof your career. And they've kindly agreed to sponsor this special episode as well. Joining us from Korn Ferry for this episode to share their expertise are Ben Frost, who works with the company's clients on issues like pay and talent management, and Sue Simonett, who leads the company's technology practice. Listen in to find out what these two experts think about: What is driving the current skills crunch? How employers might respondThe impact of AI and automation on the present and future of workChanging expectations for employers and employeesWhat Ben and Sue think of our Three Cs - Curation, Creation, CommunicationHow to maximise your future career opportunities

Today's guest deejay is Jakob Lindhagen. Sofia Nystrand introduced me to several fantastic musicians after sharing her Vargkvint mix on Soundwave (you can listen to it here). Jakob was one of those musicians, and after I listened to some of his releases, I invited him to guest deejay. Jakob is an award-winning film composer based in Stockholm, Sweden. His most recent soundtrack is Ziba, a movie about an alienated upper-class housewife in today's modern Tehran. Jakob's soundtrack for Ziba will be released Thursday, May 12. You can listen to a single from the soundtrack here. It's a beautiful, moving piece. Speaking of soundtracks, I listened to Jakob's mix while playing the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game on Roll20. It lent atmosphere to the game and heightened the experience. Before I leave you, Soundwave guest deejay Alex Haas has released his new album, STRING OF PIECES. His album has become part of my mourning routine as I start my workday. Listen to Alex's mix for Soundwave here. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Andrew Tasslemyer. Our end of October Mixtape comes from Bedroom community's Heliocrysum. With a name that evokes the Latin for sunflower but also a healing tincture, the LA-based composer/sound designer duo have just recently presented their visceral, deep and exploratory debut album "We Become Mist". Reminiscence of their name too, their sound blends overlaid orchestration and distorted lightness, simplicity washed with emotional intensity, the remembered dreams of far-off, science-fictive discoveries. Heliochrysum is Michael Deragon and Daniel Lea in which collaboration becomes a sculpted journey into new aural and imaginative cosmology. "We Become Mist" uses analogue and digital processes to mine the depths of industrial and science fictional, psychedelic soundscapes, often cinematic in tone and texture. The album has been mixed by minimal ambient beast Ben Frost and mastered by Valgeir Sigurdsson. Within the melding of the analogue and digital, there was another element mixed: the album is tinged with psilocybin technology. As a listener, you can hear as you move through a psychedelic passage, like out of a state of lockdown into one of alien otherworldliness. Something that also seems to be tingeing the electronic music scenes throughout. Especially on the American west coast. For this mix the duo have selected a series of tracks filled with the atmospheres and textures they love and are inspired by and truly find moving: "there is something like an angelic quality or a spiritual depth to each of the tracks that we are always in search of. Heliochrysum for us is about layers, simple melodies and atmospheres moving towards an immersive experience that take the listener and us somewhere new, unknown and challenging. We also included some things we have made as Heliochrysum as well as other projects that we have been a part of because for us they are all one world and part of this journey". Jlin is the recording alias of Jerrilynn Patton, an electronic music producer from Gary, Indiana. Initially associated with Chicago's footwork scene, her music evolved far beyond that style, exploring unheard rhythms and placing her in a category of her own. She quit her job as a steel mill worker to pursue music full-time. As one of the most acclaimed experimental electronic artists of the 2010's, she has shared the stage or collaborated with artists such as Björk, Ben Frost, Kyle Abraham, and William Basinski. Additionally, she has ventured into contemporary dance, composing the music for Wayne McGregor's Autobiography (Harry Potter, The Legend of Tarzan, etc.) In this episode, Jlin and Dan talk about using intuition while producing music, her live performance setup with Push 2, and many other things.
